What's new

Pakistan (152/0) defeat India (151/7) by ten wickets to end India's winning streak in World Cups

Congratulations to all the Pakistanis. What a moment. I just can't believe. They just rolled over India.

I still can't believe it, I haven't been this happy in a while!! Such an epic performance!!!! Saw it with big group of people. Our team crushed India, and in a World Cup game! PAKISTAN ZINDABAD!!!!!!

Congratulations to Pakistani fans on breaking the streak. Pakistan are looking red hot now.

Is there any way to download the whole match?
I want to preserve this day

Just logged on to congratulate all the Pakistani supporters great win, let this be the start of the journey to the final

Iv waited all my life for this day. Congrats to all the fans. Very emotional moment and will certaintly put smiles on many faces. I think now that the monkey is off the back, the belief will be there. Today is the day history was made 24th October 21.

I’m 32 years of age, been a lifelong Pakistan fan, seen all the ups and downs of Pakistan cricket and today made me feel emotional. I’m elated Pakistan won in such a convincing fashion. Congratulations to all the supporters on here. InshaAllah they go on and get to the final

Watching how well Babar and Riz rotated the strike contrasted with terrible memories of 96 and 99. In 96, the whole of the middle order including Miandad and in 99, when Inzi went to sleep, his dreadful strike rate cost the match. Unforgivable rubbish from Inzi.

Congratulations to all Pakistan fans on PP. It was a fantastic performance from start to finish. The players looked focused and up for it from ball one. Amazing chase with no chances given to the Indian's. I predicted a 10 wicket win at the half way stage, told my friends the openers will do it and Alhumdulillah they did.

A great victory, one we will always remember but we need to remain focused and professional and look ahead as we are here to become champions In Sha Allah 💚🤲 🇵🇰 🇵🇰

Congratulations to all. One of the memorable Pakistan performances, haven't seen such a clinical performance in years. What a match.

Surprisingly one sided victory.

I was confident of a good match as I personally thought both were pretty decent lineups (India had advantage of overall experience) but, didn’t expect so clinical and ruthless stuff from Pak in the match. Hopefully it is continued.

Beat India in the air (ask Wing Commander Abhinandan)!
Beat India on the ground!

Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan’s 152-run partnership for Pakistan was not just a match-winning stand, but also the biggest opening partnership in the history of the Men's T20 World Cup and Pakistan’s second-biggest partnership in a T20I for any wicket.

Azam and Rizwan’s combined efforts overtook Chris Gayle and Devon Smith’s 145 against South Africa in 2007 as the top opening stand in Men's T20 World Cups.

TOP FIVE MEN'S T20 WORLD CUP OPENING STANDS

Pair Runs Fixture
Babar Aazam, Mohammad Rizwan (Pakistan) 152* vs India, 24 October 2021
Chris Gayle, Devon Smith (West Indies) 145 vs South Africa, 11 September 2007
Kamran Akmal, Salman Butt (Pakistan) 142 vs Bangladesh, 1 May 2010
Gautam Gambhir, Virender Sehwag (India) 136 vs England, 19 September 2007
Andre Fletcher, Chris Gayle (West Indies) 133 vs Australia, 6 June 2009
David Warner, Shane Watson (Australia) 133 vs India, 28 September 2012

Here, we break down how the Pakistani batters produced their historic knock.

With 152 runs to chase, Rizwan got the reply off to the perfect start, flicking a four off the second ball of the innings from Bhuvneshwar Kumar, which Varun Chakravarthy couldn’t quite keep inside the rope at mid-in, before crunching a six over deep square off the next delivery.

The early boundaries took the scoring pressure off the pair, and they settled into the innings with plenty of singles and well-run twos, not finding the rope in five of the first eight overs. But whenever the pair did find the boundary it was almost always in sumptuous style.

The required run rate was beginning to creep up when Ravindra Jadeja bowled out a stingy 12th over.

But Babar responded with a huge next set of six deliveries, clearing the ropes twice as Chakravarthy went for 16 off the over and the Pakistan skipper brought up his 21st T20I half-century off 40 balls.

Not to be outdone by his classy captain, Rizwan brought up his own 41-ball half-century 10 deliveries later, pulling Jaspit Bumrah to the fence for four.

The runs continued to flow, and Rizwan made sure there was no nervy finish when he tore into Mohammad Shami in the 18th over, flicking a full-toss for six off the first ball of the over before registering back-to-back fours, putting Pakistan on the brink of their first-ever World Cup win over India.

And it was the captain who finished it, clipping Shami to long-on as the winning runs fittingly came from a well-run two.

It was a partnership of the absolute highest quality, coming in both players’ T20 World Cup debuts, with neither having made the Pakistan squad five years ago.

Babar is now just seven runs shy of leapfrogging David Warner to become the ninth highest run-scorer in men's T20 international cricket, with the Australian having played 20 more matches. And the Pakistan captain’s current average of 48.34 in T20 internationals is the third-best ever seen in the game.

The only players above him in that list were also both playing in Dubai on Sunday. His opposing skipper Virat Kohli, tops the list with an average of 52.72, while Rizwan’s 79* took his career average up to 52. However, the early stages of Rizwan’s career impact on those numbers. In the 18 T20 internationals since he moved up to open, the 29-year-old has scored 959 runs at an extraordinary average of 87.18.

Speaking after the match, Azam explained how he and his partner approached the record run-chase.

“The plan with Rizwan is always to keep it simple,” he said. “We tried to get deep in the crease and from about the eighth over the dew came in and the ball came on nicely.

“This is just the start, we have confidence to build on now. It will remain match by match for us.

“The pressure on us wasn't that much - we weren't thinking of the record against India at all. I only wanted to back all our players who've been preparing well.”

Azam and Rizwan’s 152 is the second biggest partnership for any wicket in Men's T20 World Cup history, 14 runs shy of Kumar Sangakkara and Mahela Jayawardene’s extraordinary 166 against West Indies in 2010.

The partnership is also the biggest for any wicket in a T20I against India, and consigned India to their first-ever ten-wicket defeat in T20s.

If the duo can carry on this form, Pakistan will be hard to beat this tournament.

Epic..miss Monsee in these moments..we've waited a while for this and salute to some of the veterans in here . Amjid Javed and others

Where is Mamoon ?.He has disappeared.Come back.It was just a cricket match. It is not the end of the world.

Congratulations to Pakistan team. This was a complete performance , skill wise and in terms of professionalism . There is no shame in losing to such a performance. Surprisingly I did not feel much sadness unlike the CT final, infact was comfortable with the fact that the competitive ness of this duel is restored.

Having said that, what is frustrating though is the lack of focus, energy or intent from the Indian team. Almost entire team other than KL, Pant and SKY looked either fatigued or disinterested in their body language. For Indian team it was not just another match but felt like they have come uninvited and more of a formality to be on the field. I really hope that this team fails to qualify for KO, otherwise this taken for granted attitude by some players and management will continue.

They stopped NZ and England touring so we couldn't get match practice.

They held IPL in UAE so they could get fully acclimatized to the pitches.

We still won.

Its a comeback for the ages. They can't stop us.

I am a little late to thread, but can anyone paraphase Mamoons reaction? He usually so active.

I guess he will probably say this is the 1/100 time Pakistan played its best and 1/100 time India played its worse. lol. But 99/100 times India beats Pakistan.

i believe i read somewhere he said this victory wasnt a fluke, but the conditions played heavily on the outcome of the game

What a performance by Pakistan I have finally recovered from the bangrah dancing batted India in all three departments.

Congratulations to Pakistan, well played!

India should now offer to play 2 x 5 Tests series with Pakistan.

Has anybody recorded the whole match?
Is there any way of sharing?

Want to see the whole match again and again

A comprehensive win over a team that has been blessed to have an unlimited resources to be the best in the game.

Both, Babar and Rizwan kept the Strike rate to the precision to chase the target throughout the game while keeping it calm.

What I like about it, they stayed humble and calm after completing the task.

Congrats Pakistan.

Pakistan's long wait for a Men's World Cup win over India came to an end in Dubai as Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan put on a record-breaking stand and Shaheen Afridi took centre stage. We look at the most surprising stats to come from the match.

The first win in World Cups
Pakistan finally broke the shackles and defeated India for the first time in 13 attempts across ICC Men’s Cricket and T20 World Cups. The World Cup rivalry between the arch-rivals started in Sydney in 1992 and in the 29 years since India had won every contest (seven in 50 overs World Cups and five in T20 World Cups) until their 10-wicket defeat at the hands of a Pakistan team led by Babar Azam at Dubai International Stadium.

Babar had a 152-run partnership with Mohammad Rizwan to win the match without losing any wicket. It was Pakistan’s first-ever 10 wicket victory and India’s first 10-wicket defeat in men’s T20 Internationals.

Power couple
Babar and Rizwan together are creating history with every new partnership. Their unbeaten 152-run stand against India made them the first pair to stitch three 150-plus stands in the history of men’s T20 Internationals. It is even more incredible that all three of them have come during their last 10 partnerships. The pair scored 150 runs against England in Nottingham and 197 against South Africa in Centurion earlier this year. The only other duo with two 150-plus stands in men’s T20Is is India’s Shikhar Dhawan and Rohit Sharma.

One-hundred-and-fifty-two is also the highest opening stand in ICC Men’s T20 World Cups, breaking the 145-run record set by Chris Gayle and Devon Smith for West Indies against South Africa in Johannesburg in 2007 (the first ever match in the T20 World Cup).

Babar and Rizwan were also involved in a 126-run partnership for the second wicket against Zimbabwe in Harare this year. They are only the third pair - Dhawan-Sharma and Martin Guptill-Kane Williamson being the other two - in men’s T20Is with four 100 runs partnerships.

Rizwan’s rise
There are 72 batters with 1000 runs in Men’s T20Is. Only two of them have an average in excess of 50. Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan (52.00) and India’s Virat Kohli (52.72). Rizwan became a regular name in Pakistan’s playing XI only a year ago when he opened the batting in the absence of Babar Azam (who was nursing an injury) and scored 89 against New Zealand in Napier. Since then, he has scored 920 runs at an average of 102.22, a strike-rate of 141.32 and hit a century and nine half-centuries in 16 innings.

The 29-year-old keeper-batter also scored 500 runs and captained Multan Sultans to their first title in Pakistan Super League this year and is the captain of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, who have won the last two National T20 tournaments in Pakistan.

Rizwan also had a memorable game behind the stumps. His catch to dismiss Suryarkumar Yadav was his 100th in T20 format.

Babar unbeaten in UAE
The win against India was Babar Azam’s 12th consecutive victory as a player in T20Is in the UAE, a country where Pakistan hosted most of their international cricket between 2010 and 2018. Babar’s winning streak stretches back to the series against West Indies in 2016 which his side won 3-0. He was also part of the Pakistan team that won two T20Is against Sri Lanka in 2017 and clean-swept Australia and New Zealand (both 3-0) in 2018.

Across twelve T20 innings in UAE, Babar has scored 460 runs at an average of 57.50 and a strike-rate of 118.55.

The Shaheen supremacy
Shaheen Afridi, who was one of the eight Pakistan players making their T20 World Cup debuts, struck two powerful blows at the start of the innings when he removed Rohit Sharma in his first over and KL Rahul in the second. He also accounted for the all-important wicket of India’s captain Virat Kohli and was named player-of-the-match for taking 3 wickets.

Shaheen has 93 wickets across all T20s since the start of 2020, the most by any fast bowler in the world. Afghanistan’s Rashid Khan (113) is the only bowler with more wickets during this period.

It has been a good T20 World Cup for youngsters so far. Shaheen is the second 21 year-old-bowler, after Sri Lanka’s Maheesh Theekshana, to bag a player-of-the-match award.

Kohli’s first dismissal vs Pakistan
The result didn’t go in his favour but India captain Virat Kohli (57 off 49 balls) consolidated his magnificent run against Pakistan in ICC T20 World Cups. It was first time in four innings in the tournament that he was dismissed by Pakistan. He was unbeaten in his previous three innings – 55 not out in Kolkata in 2016, 36 not out in Dhaka in 2014 and 78 not out in Colombo in 2012. That’s an average of 226.00 against Pakistan in T20 World Cups.

Kohli, who was also making his captaincy debut in the T20 World Cup, was dismissed by Shaheen Afridi. Since the Mohali semi-final in 2011, all of his 12 dismissals against Pakistan bowlers in international cricket have come against fast bowlers. No spinner has been able to dismiss him in 18 matches in over 10 years.

Longest serving veterans
Mohammad Hafeez and Shoaib Malik are the two survivors from Pakistan’s first ever T20 International – against England in Bristol in 2006. While Hafeez has been a regular in Pakistan’s T20 team lately, Malik made a comeback against India after a year. They are two of the only four players in the world who have a playing career span of more than 15 years in T20Is. West Indies’ duo Chris Gayle and Dwayne Bravo (15 years and 249 days) have the longest T20I span, with Hafeez and Malik (15 years and 57 days) just behind them.
