What's new

Pakistan (153/3) advance to the final of the T20 World Cup after a 7 wicket over New Zealand (152/4)

That's the power of crowd! what a big supporting crowd tonight. Not sure if it will be the same in final.

Sorry NZ

You lost because your belief is different!

I honestly feel bad for you at times...cant even enjoy one of the biggest days in Pakistan cricket in recent times because of your hatred for 1 guy...the guy that proves you wrong every time.

You have to feel bad for NZ, had they won this, they probably would have beaten India in the final, if India makes it through.

LOL what?

Pak has outplayed them today. Its not like this was a close game.
why do you need to feel bad when a teams loses fair?

He's a hack but might be better taking someone like him in the team and at 3. Playing your T20 specialists seems the way to go as shown by the Aussies and English.

Feels like Kane is only in the team because of his name, he's captain and because he needs to play T20I to pick up an IPL contract. He should be dropped like Taylor.

If Munro is a hack so is Finn. Munro's record is phenomenal. The team is stronger with him in the side.

Have said Williamson doesn't belong in the t20i setup since 2016. He will have a one good quick fire inning in 7 or 8 matches while in the remaining ones he will struggle to strike at over 100. Is a big speed bump at no3.

Finn can play proper shots, it's more temperament and the role he's been given. Munro is more in the Finch mould.

The pitch didn’t suit New Zealand a high scoring match on a wicket with more pace and bounce was ideal today the conditions were similar to UAE which tilted it in Pakistans favour.

On the same pitch NZ scored 200 v Aus and Pakistan scored 185/9 (from 43/4)

Shaheen and co. just bowled really well, just back of a length, not allowing NZ batsmen to score as many boundaries during the Powerplay and the whole game as they would have liked. Credit where it is due. Bowlers set this victory up for Pakistan. Also, Pak fielding was very good today, players diving to save the boundaries which was good to see.

I won't say Finch is a bad t20 player either. Finch's time is up. He used to be a very good LOI player.

That would be a reasonable argument if there are better options available. Ask any outsider if Munro makes the current NZ t20i team, 90% will probs say yes.

He should have got his eye in before swinging wildly like that.

No way this was the same pitch, it's used.

That match there were close to a dozen sixes hit, this match had 3 total.

Yep, he should have. He threw his wicket away playing recklessly against Afridi who was getting the ball to move a bit.

Munro should have been in the team instead of Kane but Kane is not going to be pushed out by selectors.

Not going to lie, really enjoyed the T20 WC.

Think this might be the future of cricket.

50 overs feels like an age now and doesn't hit like this T20I WC has.

Pakistan conceded only 29 runs in the last three overs, and that's where I think the match was won. Some excellent bowling by the bowlers towards the end made sure that New Zealand finished well below than what they were aiming for, as anything above 165 might've challenged the batsmen a little more than the target of 153 did. A thoroughly clinical performance in all departments. Well done!

50 over games are going to feel like days after having followed this tournament.

Usually don't get to follow it all because of the time zones, but this one in Aus I have watched most matches and they've largely been enjoyable.

50 overs on the other hand would have dragged on by now and the affiliates would not have been able to pull off upsets or compete.

Attention spans are getting smaller and smaller. Say goodbye to test cricket and ODIs.

It's true though isn't it?

Feels like a lot feel the same way but haven't said it.

You wouldn't have gotten the same drama or close games in 50 overs - where 90% of the time the stronger team wins.

I believe new Zealand are bigger chockers than south africa in world cups. If i am not wrong they lost more knockouts than anyone incluiding 2 finals.

daytrader check out the pavilion guys :)) Doing the whole show in sun glasses, LOVE IT.

Better to lose a SF than to lose another Final.

Would have been like 4 out of 5 Finals lost had we qualifed.

ODI WC still has its prestige, but think they need to stick with the super 10/8 or whatever for it.

The affiliates will be boring games and wont be competitive.

Watching it now. Loving the vibe, no over the top criticism today.

Why do you need to see “because our belief is different?”

Why do we beg SENA teams to tour us then? You clearly tell them you ‘different’!

You're overreacting.

Ian Bishop asked him about the mood in the group and how were they feeling before this game.....and Rizwan's reply is apt for that question.

He said that their belief before this game was different to other teams.....they were not worried about the result and had belief on the Almighty Allah and just focussed on working hard and left the results upon Allah.

Nothing wrong with what he said.

Ha ha 🤣 first it was a bad pitch and now NZ bowlers.

Us specific Poster ke kismat mein rona likha hai against Pakistan. Guy makes the most ridiculous excuses and laughable claims, not hard to simply appreciate good cricket.

Well done Pakistan.. Cornered tigers mentality working once again! ...
Let's see now if India can reach the finals ?

Congratulations to Pakistan for a great victory
All the best for final
Hard luck to NZ better luck next time

Thank You Allah for your support, expect the same for the final please .😆

Waiting for Mamoon to be hypercritical of Pakistan performance and mentioning the FLUKE word :mw

Yep, he should have. He threw his wicket away playing recklessly against Afridi who was getting the ball to move a bit.

New Zealand batsmen did not assess the conditions well enough it wasn’t a 200 wicket where they can hit boundaries easily 165 was close to par on this wicket not enough 2s and 3s were taken working the gaps finding other ways to score can win matches.

After losing only 4 wickets 152 is below par clearly the conditions and the way Pakistan bowled won the match a bit slower wicket which had some turn for the spinners.

Also, there is a history in world cups. Pakistan usually beat New Zealand (in fact we have stopped NZ many times at the SF stage in both 50 over and T20WCs) and South Africa in world cups. Our problems are mainly against India and Australia (in KO games).

India has a better chance of beating Australia than us. However, in recent tournaments, India has been losing against both NZ and South Africa...

Meh, would have liked our chances more on a pitch which was true than one which is sluggish and stops and grips.

It's not something our T20 players are use to, they're strikers who like to have the ball coming onto the bat and hitting big sixes.

Our batsmen are built for that and thrive under those conditions where they can go after the ball knowing it wont move and will come on.

Regardless no point, it's WC and you're tested under different conditions and we have benefited with conditions favoring us in the past.

Pakistan performed on the day and NZ flopped. This is what knockout games are all about. It's another wonderful story for Pakistan cricket with their tournament fortunes swinging back around.

Peaking at just the right time ala so many previous tournaments.

Ironically last time round, we peaked too early.

Every chance Pakistan can go on and win the final.

Commiserations Aman Well played, better luck next time.

Kane Williamson post match today:

We were put under pressure early as Pakistan bowled really nicely. We managed to wrest it back with a little bit of momentum and an unbelievable knock from Daryll Mitchell.

At the half way stage we were feeling like it was a competitive total. We knew the wicket was a little bit tough, a used surface.

It’s very disappointing to not make Pakistan work a lot harder for that. Pakistan were outstanding and we were outplayed today. Credit goes to their quality, they certainly deserved their win.

It’s a tough pill to swallow. We certainly pride ourselves in a number of areas which are strengths of ours but we didn’t quite do that today.

Fielding was ok. Babar and Rizwan at the top of the order put us under pressure and played really nicely. If we want to be honest we wanted to be a bit more disciplined with our areas and make that a little more difficult to get away on.

At the end of the day Pakistan certainly deserved to be winners.

There’s been a lot of good cricket. We played pretty nicely and stuck with what has given us a real good chance to go through this tournament. Today we weren’t quite at our best ands that’s frustrating.

Congrats Pakistan. Pakistan miraculously activates the choke gene in NZ. They were very nervous in the 2nd half from the get go. First ball a harmless short ball on a slow pitch lol. Conway was the worst choker today. Ball didn't even stick in his hand. Many fielders fumbled. Pakistan cruised through without any mishap. Pakistan's change ups were excellent on a slow dry pitch.

Congratulations, clinical victory. Pakistan post the Misbah era has become a mentally strong side which thrives under tournament KO pressure. They can lose in bilaterals but suddenly peak in big tournaments.

Life is funny, I thought Pak was the best side in last year's WC but lost the semi final. This time somehow they reached the semi and one hand on the cup. Openers too finding form at the right time, right time to peak and I think they start as favorites on Sunday purely because of the momentum. Last Sunday morning who thought SA would lose to the Dutch? Think Pakistan is destined to win the trophy, that too in Australia, that too after not winning a single T20I in Australia till 2 weeks ago. Some story this.

Congratulations to Pakistan! This is how a semi-final has to be played. A very well-deserved victory.
I am happy for the Pakistan cricket fans out here in this forum.

Congratulations to Pakistan. Excellent easy comfortable no panic chase.

If England dont make it to the final then I’ll be rooting for Pak to win the world cup

Mubarak ho...just hope we keep same passion alive and good fielding, bowling, batting in Final...
We tend to take things easy later on...Go for the Kill

This is why I became a fan of Pakistan cricket team despite being an Indian, they are just an unbelievable team to watch. Congratulations on reaching the Finals. 👏👏👏

Congratulations to Pakistan and all fans
And commiserations to Mamoon

Pakistan’s opening batters produced a superb stand to help their side to victory over New Zealand in the ICC Men's T20 World Cup semi-final on Wednesday.

Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan have found form when it really matters, putting the Black Caps to the sword in Sydney to make a gettable but tricky chase look straightforward.

The style and scoring rates of Babar and Rizwan have seen them come in for occasional criticism, as has their form throughout the tournament’s group stage, with the captain particularly out of sorts.

But the pair’s numbers in T20I cricket are extraordinary, and they broke yet another record in the course of setting up victory over New Zealand.

The Pakistan openers’ 105-run stand was their third century partnership at a Men’s T20I World Cup, a new record, more than any other pairing in the history of the tournament.

That century stand was also their ninth in all T20Is, comfortably an all-time best, four more than the next-highest pairing of India's KL Rahul and Rohit Sharma, who have five to their name.

Babar and Rizwan are also the highest-scoring partnership in Men’s T20I history by some distance, combining to put 2509 runs on the board when together at the crease for Pakistan in the format – 621 more than any other pair.

And their average as a pairing is now 51.20. For context, only three duos who have passed 1000 partnership runs have an average of over 40, with no others in excess of 50.

“Tonight was very special and a few things came out for us,” Pakistan coach Matthew Hayden said after watching his openers turn on the style.

“Everyone will talk about Babar and Rizwan … the sky is the limit and both of these guys have done it for Pakistan for a number of years.”

Captain Babar Azam had only reached double-figures once in the tournament prior to the semi-final, with a scratchy 25 against Bangladesh in the final group game his only sign of form.

But a dropped catch by Devon Conway off the very first ball he faced gifted the skipper a chance, and he grabbed that opportunity, stroking seven fours en-route to a 30th half-century of his storied T20I career.

With Babar finding form, Pakistan will be a worry for their opponents in the final, and his opening partner looks in decent nick too.

Rizwan has only recently been knocked off the top spot in the MRF Tyres ICC Men's T20I Batting Rankings and has looked in slightly superior form to his skipper, with a 49 against Netherlands and a 32 versus Bangladesh putting runs to his name in the Super 12 stage.

But his 57 from 43 balls against the Black Caps was comfortably his best contribution of the tournament so far, and Rizwan subsequently explained that his knock was built on aggression up top and then a switch towards an anchor mindset as the innings went on.

“Obviously, me and Babar decided to go after the new ball and the pitch was difficult.

“When we finished the powerplay, the discussion was one of the guys to go deep.”

Babar and Rizwan have rediscovered their mojo at the ideal moment.

With the world’s best-ever opening pair back in form, Pakistan will fear nobody in Sunday’s final at the MCG.

Pakistan totally dominated the match.

Far ahead in captaincy, tactics, batting, bowling and fielding.

There was a sticky patch of a couple of overs when Pakistan was batting and Mitchell looked dangerous but apart from that Pakistan were totally in control.

Fantastic effort.

Pakistan brings out the worst of NZ always. They looked the worst fielding side between the two. Skill level of Boult/Southee is ridiculous poor for a T20 game. Even Netherlands bowlers had more variety and planning. Then there is this ferguson brainlessly pounding the ball into the pitch which hardly rose above knee. They clearly showed at the beginning this SCG pitch has significanly lower bounce compared to first match. Difference is T20 bowling skill level. There is a vast gulf between Pakistan bowling skill level and NZ skill level. Boult/Southee bowl in tests/ODis/T20s. High time they are dropped from limited overs.

Pakistan are heading to Melbourne and the ICC Men's T20 World Cup Final after a superb victory over New Zealand in Sydney on Wednesday.

It was Pakistan’s best performance of the tournament so far, with opening pair of Babar Azam and Mohammad Rizwan turning up when it mattered most to set up a successful chase.

But aside from the brilliance of Babar and Rizwan there were some crucial moments that sent Pakistan to the final.

Restricting New Zealand in the Powerplay was always going to be key for Pakistan, and early wickets were high on the wish list after being asked to bowl first.

If you had to choose one player to take that new ball in world cricket it’s probably Shaheen Afridi, and Pakistan’s strike bowler delivered on the big stage as he nearly always does.

The finger was raised twice inside the opening three balls of the innings as wicked inswingers had Finn Allen in all sorts of trouble. A big inside edge off the first decision gave the opener a one-ball reprieve, but the dismissal of New Zealand’s big-hitting right-hander pegged the innings back right from the start.

Shaheen took just that one wicket in the Powerplay, but his first over set the tone.

The Black Caps were restricted throughout the Powerplay, missing out on the opportunity for a fast start. And yet, with Devon Conway and Kane Williamson established at the crease, there was a platform on which the Kiwis would have hoped to build a sizeable total.

Conway is the key to New Zealand’s batting order and the third-ranked batter in world cricket right now, so to dismiss him via a run out was a huge and decisive moment in the match.

It wasn’t even particularly an error of judgement by New Zealand to take the run; it required a piece of fielding of the absolute highest quality to take the wicket.

Shadab Khan is one of the best fielders in the world, but even for him the swoop and direct hit was magical.

It has been a tricky tournament at times for Mohammad Nawaz, with the all-rounder involved in some tough moments during his side’s losses during the group stage.

So there was something particularly heart-warming to see the left-arm spinner make a big impact.

Glenn Phillips has been in seriously decent form throughout this tournament and could have taken the Kiwis to a challenging total. But he was fooled in the flight by Nawaz, chipping a return catch back to the bowler.

Haris and his timely hits

Pakistan had looked in complete control throughout their chase, but there was just a hint of pressure beginning to build when the target went to 19 from 15 balls.

If that sort of required number had drifted into Mitchel Santner and Tim Southee’s final two overs then there would have been a chance for New Zealand to snatch it at the last, but Mohammad Haris removed the pressure at the precise moment it surfaced.

This was only the 21-year-old’s fourth T20I, but he stepped up big time with back-to-back boundaries in the 18th over, following up a flowing four with a huge hook that sailed over square leg for six.

Not many people thought we would be going to final before the World Cup started especially after the first 2 matches. Yet here we are!

NZ were shockingly poor and below par today. Given their display today they definately over achieved in Group A which had Australia, England, Ireland, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan all very tough sides. NZ over achieves despite lack of resources with team work, strategy, planning.

Today some of the players i.e. Southee, Bolt looked pretty old both with the ball and in the field. Ferguson looked a bit tired. Williamson is not cut out for this format and he played a selfish match losing knock.

New Zealand misread the conditions and couldn’t get out of second gear their batting line up is ideally suited to high scoring matches this slower pitch stifled them.

Dominant performance. Don't see how pak doesn't win thus wc. Seems like all the stars are aligning.

I agree.

Pakistan completely outplayed New Zealand.

As a man here once said,

“We deserve this humiliation”

:inti

It is not often you say this but Pakistan outfielded New Zealand today (dropped 3 catches)

🤣 ive heard some nonsense theory's here but this your best yet. You can never just give pakistan any credit.

I saw another thread where he was being praised for his potw and people kept speaking about his objective analysis. So I thought maybe he changed but this post confirms nothing changed. Lol. Living in a world of delusion. If Pak fans say something I am sure he will jump on it

What a match, still coming off the high of the match from the stadium! Everything clicked and let's hope it happens for the final too.

Rohit: We did not turn up with the ball
India captain Rohit Sharma...

"It's disappointing how we turned up today. We batted pretty well at the backend but we were not good enough with the ball. It was definitely not a wicket where a team should chase that down in 16 overs. With the ball we did not turn up. Knockout stages are about keeping calm and handling pressure and the way we started with the ball was not ideal. It shows we were a little nervy but you have to give credit to England."
