What's new

Pakistan (269/9) defeat West Indies (216) by 53 runs (DLS) to win 3rd ODI; Win series 3-0

Luxury headache for Pakistan.

Imad the superior batsman, but Nawaz the better bowler. I guess it depends on conditions.

In SENA conditions Imad's darters might prove to be useful as there isn't much spin available.

Nawaz is a genuine batsman , not a hitter.

Windies 32 runs ahead but 2 wickets behind where Pakistan were at this stage.

Nawaz is a genuine batsman , not a hitter.

The problem with this Pakistani batting is that they are too slow at the top requiring 6-8 to be hard hitters. Imad's been good in that role.

But the issue with Imad remains his toothless bowling in the longer formats.

Imad has a bowling average of nearly 45 in ODI's. I can't believe people think he genuinely should come back or that he is a better option than Nawaz.

Wickets is the name of the game in LOI.

Not necessarily. In odis, holding an end can be a job for a spinner. It's pacers and wrist spinners who do most damage.
Imad does spectacularly with the bat tho. Avg 42 @110 sr. None of it is minnow bashing either. Surely that should be a factor too?

Imad is a darter , Nawaz flights the ball , this makes difference , when you go with 2 spinners in WC , you need wicket-takers in the middle order.

You need to look for wickets , holding one end will not help on flat pitches.

Umpire call again. 2 umpire calls that Wasim hasn't gotten unfortunately. Bowled extremely well and I reckon, the pick of the bowlers for Pakistan.

Game's not over until Akeal is in the pavilion.

Pacers and wrist spinners will always have to look for wickets but you can afford a finger spinner to keep it tight if he is really good at keeping it tight, which Imad is.
Plus as I said, Imad's batting has been simply spectacular in odis.

Its mindset , if you want to have wicket taking bowlers or darters.

Pakistani bowlers aren't frankly good enough at the moment and leak plenty of runs. A container option is limiting your bowling attack even further especially with flat road pitches nowadays.

The solution to fixing our power hitting issues isn't making the bowling attack & fielding worse, it's fixing the middle that's the root cause of it.

Can't afford to lose this, need the points for WC qualification.

West Indies need 66 runs from 13.5 overs.

Its possible if they keep heads down and bat out these overs

Shadab gets Akeal. It had started to look slightly dangerous the way he was middling it.

Wow Shadab with the massive breakthrough just when it was looking like Hosein had a chance to win WI the match.

Bit confused why they kept going so hard when it wasn't really necessary.

Because that’s the only way they can win they don’t know any other way they can attack only

Good to see the West Indies team granting a decent number of deserving students higher education scholarships before they leave for home....

Shadab would've beem motm based on his batting/bowling alone. That's how dominant this performance was.

If West Indies had some game-awareness they would and should have won that match.

Babar Azam, Pakistan captain: Whatever we planned as a team, we executed. We are giving our 100% in all three facets of the game. As a team, the way we played the second match - Nawaz's bowling performance was vital, that's the best performance. We tested out our bench strength and tried different combinations. There's always room for improvement. We need to fare better with the new ball and also the fielding could be better. Hope we learn from our mistakes. I try to play positive cricket. We had different conditions in all three games, partnerships are the key. Thank you Multan crowd for supporting us.

Nicholas Pooran, West Indies captain: The last two games disappointing for us. The first game, we did well as a team. Going forward that's the template. We'll learn a lot from this series. (Akeal) He is working really hard. He says everyone that he's a batsman as well. Well played, Akeal. It's been tough here, I am really proud of the players how they took the challenge. Couple of days for the Bangladesh series, we are looking forward to that. (Multan crowd) They have been amazing, we love the fans. It's a treat. They support good cricket and that's appreciated.

Imam-ul-Haq, Player of the Series: It feels very nice,I was working very hard on the process. It feels special, feel happy to play with this bunch of players. (Improving strike-rate) I haven't changed too much. Good performances gives you the confidence. (On his partnerships with Babar Azam) It's special, it's a 11-year friendship, we know each others' strength and weakness. We talk a lot. Run-outs are part of this game and it was his fault.

Shadab Khan, Player of the Match: It's tough after an injury, but I have done well in the last two games with both bat and ball. The talk with Khushdil was to take it as deep as possible. Glad that we were able to execute that. I bowled better in the first two games than today. Hopefully I'll be able to improve.

Skipper Babar Azam failed with the bat and star quick Shaheen Shah Afridi was rested, but it mattered little as Pakistan picked up another victory over West Indies in Multan.

Babar fails, but team-mates pick up the slack

It's not often that skipper Babar Azam fails with the bat, but that was the case in the third ODI in Multan as the Pakistan captain was dismissed for just one by Hayden Walsh.

But in what was a promising sign for Pakistan ahead of next year's ICC Cricket World Cup in India, plenty of his team-mates stepped up when required and gave the No.1 ranked ODI batter some help with the willow.

Opener Imam-ul-Haq (62 off 68 balls) contributed another half-century and was deservedly named Player of the Series, while middle-order duo Shadab Khan (86 from 78 balls) and Khushdil Shah (34 off 43 balls) continue to impress during the final overs of an innings.

Pooran the destroyer...with the ball!

Up until Sunday's clash, new West Indies' white-ball skipper Nicholas Pooran had bowled just three deliveries in ODI cricket, but that changed quickly as the part-time off-spinner claimed four key Pakistan wickets and career best figures (4/48) with the ball.

Pooran found plenty of bounce and turn, sending back Fakhar Zaman (35), Imam-ul-Haq (62), Mohammad Haris (zero) and Mohammad Rizwan (11) to help reduce the hosts to 117/5, but that was as good as it got for the visitors as Shadab Khan and Khushdil Shah ensured Pakistan could post a competitive score with some lofty late hitting.

While Pooran is much more known as a stylish middle-order batter, his latest exploits suggest he could easily develop into a world-class all-rounder with both bat and ball.

No Shaheen Shah Afridi, no worries

The star Pakistan quick was rested for the final ODI of the series and his absence was hardly felt as Pakistan's strong bowling line-up impressed in the searing Multan heat.

Shadab Khan backed up his performance with the bat by picking up four West Indies wickets, while Hasan Ali bowled well with the new ball to claim the key wicket of Shai Hope (21) and the final scalp of Romario Shepherd (16) to ensure West Indies could not chase down Pakistan's score.

Debutant Shahnawaz Dahani was lively with the new ball and stayed composed after going for some early runs and was duly rewarded with the wicket of Kyle Mayers for five.

All in all, there were plenty of positives to come from the series for Pakistan and bodes well for their chances at next year's World Cup.

What they said

Pakistan captain Babar Azam: "We executed our plans and got the desired results. We are trying different combinations with bat and ball. We will try to keep continuity and also test our bench strength."

West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran: "The last two games were disappointing for us. We played poorly with the bat. We did well as a team and going forward that will be the template."
