That's the end of another profitable day for the Australians, they bowled better lengths in the first two sessions, kept boundaries at a minimum and sent Pakistan tumbling to 271 all-out. Plenty of starts, but not a lot of their batters went past 50. Imam-ul-Haq's 62 was the best score, but his dismissal summed up the day for them. They did show lots of patience, but with them being unable to press forward, the bowlers were always in the game. Having conceded a first innings lead of 216, they needed early wickets to ensure that the hosts didn't fly away in their second dig. Khurram Shahzad struck twice with the new ball. But Smith and Khawaja have been resolute and have extended Australia's lead to 300 runs. The cracks are opening up, the odd ball is either shooting through or rising uncomfortably. Batting will be a challenge and the hosts have six sessions to wrap this Test up.

When: December 17, 7:20 AM PST

Where: Optus Stadium, Perth

There will be cracks developing. Lyon is going to be the most dangerous as the game goes on. They will have in out field if Pakistan decides to attack. Pakistan's non selection of specialist spinner will hurt them here.

Damage limitation now, that poor 1st inns effort with bat from pakistan, means that Aussies will just toy with Pakistan rest of the game.

Pakistan, you can either cower like kittens or stand up and fight for the badge. Bowl negatively, anything, to prevent an Aussie assault and then bat with courage!

Not flail at innocuous bowls on fifth stumps. A draw isn't impossible, a heavy defeat very.

Teams have been bowled out for 36 and come back to win series.

They need to show some backbone going forward and prove they belong. That they're not a relic living off glories past.

Jeevay Pakistan.

Abrar's untimely injury means we don't really have anyone to make full use of the cracks, and our quicks haven't been accurate enough to hit problem patches often.
Could be a long day ahead for us, wouldn't be surprised if they declared with a half hour left with our heads dropped as low as they can go.

I don't think cracks will appear at Optus Stadium, it only happens at the WACA.

But one thing is for sure that Australia doesn't need any help from cracks to get this slugish Pakistan team all out.

It depends. India did have hairline cracks when Optus stadium hosted their first test. Ball was doing all sort of tricks on day 4 for Lyon who eventually rolled over India for 140.

It can crack. Curator is still experimenting with grass length to promote some cracking but not a mindefield.

It's the same clay source as WACA & same grass type so should crack sometimes. But it's not really hot enough to crack big- usually happens when it's near 35 degrees for a few days.

Just tuned in , fantastic interview by Aamir jamal, looks to be a humble down to earth guy. Great performance getting 6 on dbut. Dude took a loan and was driving a taxi but never gave up the dream of playing for pak.
It is wonderful to see someone realize their dream and passion. Good luck Champ from an Indian fan!

coming to the game, Only chance for pak is do an Agarkar - Rahul combo- Adelaide 2004 - someone to run thru the Aus lineup and get them cheap.... and have someone to bat out of their skins - Lightning has to strike twice :) very tough task ahead.

A lot of luck in that one but you need that sometimes I guess

Looks like Cummins might want to bat till target 425+ , too defensive , should go bang bang last 45 minutes of this session & pull the plug at lunch ! No one is chasing 400 here in 5 sessions !

Absolutely embarrassing form afridi trundling in and bowling 75mph pies. He’s finished needs to be dropped. He won’t ever get his pace back he’s finished

Much better pace from Shaheen today, getting up to 137-138 clicks. Bit better in pace from Khurram too, closer to 130 & sometimes more than 125 he was living at on the 2nd day.

Jamal has got a wicket as Travis head is back to the hut. Beautiful bowling this is from jamal.

Mini come back by Pakistan with double blow. Slight jitter must be among Australia's camp. 300 plus has been chased down before.

The new kids continue to put in the hard work and get wickets. Jamal another one today and potentially back to back if Marsh has gloved this.

Rather than propagating against Babar and lobbying for SSA, Shahid Afridi should have hired a top notch physio and trainer to make SSA fit

Oh another review. Line will be the issue but could be another wicket for Jamal.

Oh boy, Jamal is on fire here. 2 balls 2 reviews. Even though Marsh survived but looked fairly close on usman.

Usman survives as well. 2 balls 2 reviews and 2 lucky escapes for Australia.

I think anything over 375 is going to be impossible to chase against Australia on this pitch.

Pakistan can make history here if they roll them over below 350.

Really tough.

350 means Australia collapse in next 25 runs.

Not saying it can't happen, but it would need lots of magic.

And once they hit 400, Pakistan ain't chasing that.

I think we know we've realistically lost this match but it's good to see some fightback and some good bowling

Just that first day wasn't good enough

Hopefully we can at least make them work for the win and take this into the next test match

You need counter attacking innings. Atleast one. Most of the epic chases needed that. Kusal perera chase , Rishab Pant chase, Bairstow/Root chase all needed counter attacks. Approaching target methodically will eventually make you lose your way.

Australia scoring at even a slower rate than Pakistan despite the huge lead. Just shows this is not an easy pitch to bat but Pakistani bowlers were simply poor with their lines & length on the first day and in particular, the first session.

100% agree.

It's the only way but Pakistan might not have the batsmen to pull it off.

we only have ourselves to blame, dropped catches unfit bowlers and batters throwing it away

Yes. Pakistan lacks natural stroke players. Players whose default game has to be aggression. Sarfraz can chance himself against Lyon. Masood can take on seamers. Others should play around them.

They probably will try to declare by tea. I am not sure how aggressive Cummins is. If it were to be Michael Clarke declaration would be on by lunch.

Khwaja playing a terrible innings. Dude is playing like he is hoping for a draw. Should have been gone and that would have actually helped Aussies.

Jamal has been bowling some good tight lines. Not very easy to run away with runs here.

Go ahead and score 450. We will avenge Asad Shafiq’s heroic effort and chase it down this time.

Need to bat Imam at 8 and let Shan open with Abdullah.

Hope this is not yet another game where we show brilliance for a few sessions and then flop for the most part.

I know chances are slim but it’s about time. 20+ years now.. a miracle is due iA. Almost had one last time.

351. Assuming they don't get bowled out their target will be in the range of 450 so that they can keep attacking with close in fielders.

15 years back at Perth (at WACA) SA chased down 414 in 4th innings with ridiculous ease. Greatest 4th innings specialist Graeme smith and ABDV orchestrated the brilliant chase with centuries.

Pakistan does not have that kind of mentally strength batters.

Looking good is not enough , Babar needs to score big outside Asia.
You need a bit of luck to score in SA, Eng and Aus. I am sure Babar will get at least 1 big score in the remaining 3 innings he is going to play. He is too good to get out cheaply every time he bats.

A captain who is better than the dross captains we have had so far but a poor batsmen and even a worse fielder.

No spinner in the team.

Shaheen bowling military medium as leader of the pace attack.

And your best bowlers being two debutants who have yet to play Test match cricket.

And we wonder why we keep losing games in Australia.

They will be looking at a lead of another 80. I think it is mostly to give more rest to their bowlers before ocming back and bowling.

Bat out 4 session to secure a draw, possible. Pakistan has some Tuk Tuk Legends in their line up like Imam..
You can do if you show some temperament. Injured Vihari and Ashwin batted 43 overs to earn an epic draw at the SCG. Pakistan has loaded their side with batsmen. So there is no reason why they can't repeat that.

Usman and marsh are on the move here. This is not good bowling from Pakistan and that dropped catch will hurt Pakistan even more.

Boland would have been handful in these conditions as he has the best mechanical action in the Australian side. Due to team combo he can't find a place.

Preperations for this tour were very poor. The players need to come to this tour very fresh with no Cricket for 2-3 months and with a solid training, fitness camp and coming to Australia atleast a month in advance.

Playing a high intensity WC before coming to Australia was not the best prep for such a demanding tour.
