Pakistan (271 & 89) suffer a humiliating 360-run loss to Australia (487 & 233/5d) in the 1st Test match

Only reason Babar lasted long was because he was a top performer throughout his tenure.

In Pakistan you cannot command respect unless you yourself are performing. It’s a very different culture and a non-performing captain will always be ripped apart.

I don’t expect Masood to continue much further. He will lose whatever form he did have and be dropped soon enough.

Babars cricketing and captaincy intellect was zero and he had a good 4 year powerful run. He failed in the major ICC tournaments and against the strong A sides, if you analyze his record against strong teams vs minnows it doesn't make for a pretty reading

Rizwan in for Sarfaraz and Wasim Jnr in for Faheem. If PAK want to be really brave, get Saim Ayub in for Imam as well.

That is the best PAK XI possible. If that lineup gets thrashed brutally as well it's fine. Not sure there are better players in all of Pakistan.

But those 2 changes are a must.

Babar was and will always be a rubbish captain tactically. Massive difference in how Masood operated this test compared to how Babar allowed Warner and co to maul us senseless back in 2019.

Regardless, in Pakistan it’s a given that the top performer be made captain. How will Masood command respect in the dressing room with those pathetic batting stats?

Wow. Unbelievable. Thrashing really. What's next now? Biryani? 9 kilos of mutton? Cake cutting?

Show some fight. I mean even our best teams of 95 to 2003 couldn't win a test here so expecting much from this newbie team is a bit unfair. Having said that, we show no resistance. It's like we have given up even before the game has started. Also we are severely lacking in fitn3ss. This is where I miss misbah. Certain talented individuals may miss out due to their inability to pass fitness tests and obviously the method has some flaws however, it gusnrstess that our players will be able to withstand the rigours of Test cricket if they actually made a serious effort to ace the fitness tests. Higher fitness level will also ensure sustained concentration for polronged periods hence we would be able to compete by playing at higher intensity. Players won't be as fatigued and will be able to dig deep and perform in crunch situations.

Unless we fix this fitness gap, its just going to be a routine thrashing as per usual.

Babar can't perform as captain. Can't perform as a batsman. What a player he is. Yes sarfraz is rubbish. Stupid selections as usual. Only the 2 newbies did alright
Shaheen babar and sarfi were the worst players. Imam despite his flaws did better than the aforementioned trio.

Shaheen has a couple of technical issues with his action. He needed 4 months off to work on his bowling . But PAK are starved for fast bowling options that they were forced to select him for this tour.

Great. Heard there was a biryani spot not too far from the stadium. Kinda tired after all this 4 day 5 day cricket stuff, time to dine and then maybe go to one of the beaches Perth has to offer to think about blessings in disguise.

Gutless performance as expected, seems no heart or application shown here

Cowards performance

We got a poor squad and in general no real batsman so this isn’t surprising. We’ve had full teams in the past and always been slaughtered in Australia so not really much to say

They don't care about the fans. They will be back for psl don't worry. Even shaheen will be raging to go. Fully fit and ready.
Tbf he really needs a break.

The preparation is lacking. You cannot blame these batsmen, they get to play test cricket in Australia after four years. Abdullah, Saud, Salman, Jamal etc are some of the players who have never even set foot in Australia before. On top of that you end up facing one of the best bowling attacks in the world right now aswell.

It’s ruthless and relentless, and none of our meek kittens have the cojones to take this situation on. Babar is a very good player but he does not have the personality of a Kohli or even an AB de Villiers. You need tough personalities to face up to these Aussies, and it doesn’t happen overnight.

Pakistan needs to be in Australia atleast two months before a Test series next time to have any chance of competing, let alone win or draw a test.
spot on

Pakistan team will never improve as it's always 1 step ahead and 2-3 back.

What was the need for change in management after WC? But pressure created by media and ex players led to experienced individuel changed with the likes of Hafeez. Shaan Masood the 28 average guy is the captain lol.

Lyon's 500th wicket caps crushing victory for Aussies

On another of those days that professional scriptwriters might describe as being unrealistically fairytale, Australia stormed to a stunning Test win crowned by favourite son Nathan Lyon's long-awaited 500th wicket.

Lyon's milestone moment came around 4.15pm local time in Perth, in suitably modern circumstances given the lbw decision that triggered celebrations was initially refused by umpire Richard Illingworth on-field before being overturned on review.

"I was pretty confident about it, everyone said the height was okay the only issue was it might have been sliding down leg, but thankfully it was three reds" Lyon told Fox Sports in the aftermath of his memorabilia moment.

"500 wickets is pretty amazing, and to do it here and contribute to a pretty amazing team win makes it even better."

Despite beginning Pakistan's second innings with 499 scalps alongside his name, Lyon's hopes of securing the accolade in his first game back from a calf injury appeared to be dwindling as his fast-bowling teammates tore through their opponents' top-order to leave them 6-63 chasing 450 to win.

But in keeping with the theme of cascading wickets as Pakistan tumbled to the fourth-lowest fourth innings total at either Test venue in Perth, having waited more than 24 hours to get from 499 to 500, it took just four more deliveries to reach 501.

After they were skittled for 62 in the Western Australia capital 42 years ago, and 72 in 2004 (both of those at the WACA Ground), they were humbled for 89 in 30.2 overs on a pitch that provided challenges for batters but where Australia managed 5(dec)-233 earlier today.

The 360-run win also represents the second-biggest (in terms of runs) for Australia against Pakistan, headed only by the 491-run result in Perth 19 years ago.

Given the scale of the task on an increasingly erratic pitch, Pakistan were always at long odds to get close to their distant target but few foresaw the speed and totality of their implosion which was triggered by Australia's new-ball attack.

Pakistan might not have successfully chased more than 32 to win a Test in Australia, but their highest fourth innings score here was coincidentally 450 which they posted in falling 40 runs short of an improbable win at the Gabba in a day-night match seven years ago.

Any chance of the 2023 iteration of their team matching that effort on a vastly more problematic pitch were quashed within 15 overs of the innings getting underway as they crashed to 4-48.

The procession began in Mitchell Starc's opening over when he shaped a perfectly-pitched delivery into right-hander Abdullah Shafique who was drawn to play as it straightened marginally and flew chest-high to keeper Alex Carey.

The message that early strike sent to the tourists' dressing room was unmistakably foreboding, and it didn’t take long for abject panic to take root.

Captain Shan Masood's forgettable match ended with a whimper when, a ball after a languid play and miss against Josh Hazlewood, he repeated the failed stroke and presented Carey with a second catch.

First innings top scorer Imam-ul-Haq tried despairingly to have his lbw decision overturned on review, but the examination only confirmed the ball from Starc would have clipped the top of his leg stump.

And all hope was officially lost shortly before tea when their best batter and recently removed skipper Babar Azam pushed forward to a length ball from Cummins that bounced sufficiently to clip the batter's right thumb.

Babar was partly bemused by knowing there was nothing in his formidable batting armoury that might have countered such a potent weapon and in equal parts annoyed given his junior batting partner Saud Shakeel had declined a single at the start of the over that might have deferred his fate.

Shakeel's questionable running was also responsible for all-rounder Salman Ali Agha's demise, as Pakistan's innings descended into freefall.

Having knocked a ball from Starc towards square leg, Shakeel took several instinctive steps down the pitch before changing his mind by which time Salman was fully committed to the single.

By the time Travis Head's throw had landed in the hands of Marnus Labuschagne at the bowler's end and the stumps were duly broken, Salman remained a metre short of his crease in what proved a graphic representation of Pakistan's scrambled mindset.

At 6-63, with last specialist batter Sarfaraz Ahmed having fended a catch limply to gully, the only remaining points of conjecture were whether Pakistan's lower-order might survive into day five and if Lyon could collect his golden moment.

There were half-chances, including a couple of inside edges from Faheem Ashraf that flew tantalisingly close to leg slip and a speculative review for caught behind off the same batter that was shown to be misplaced.

But with the first ball of his next over, Lyon's decision – in close consultation with Carey – to review another unsuccessful shout brought history when he became the first Australia Test bowler to reach his 500th Test wicket on home soil.

Lyon's unique talent was perhaps best illustrated by the fact fast bowlers dominated throughout this Test and his rival finger spinner Salman failed to claim a wicket across 40 overs in two innings.

The challenges facing batters on a pitch, which had been specifically prepared in the hope it would undergo more natural deterioration than was the case in last year's bowler-unfriendly Test, became achingly obvious early on day four.

Within five runs of a half-century, Steve Smith was struck on the pad by a delivery from debutant Khurram Shahzad he was unflinchingly certain was sliding down leg side as well as bouncing over the stumps.

So sure was the former Australia captain he had called for a review before umpire Joel Wilson had fully extended his index finger, and was demonstrably aggrieved when the technology showed the seam of the ball grazing his leg bail.

As the bounce became more erratic, Travis Head took on his familiar role of aggressor as shown when he drove the second ball he faced imperiously down the ground for four.

But even the in-form World Cup hero found the going tough, playing and missing at deliveries that nipped away and surviving a scare when a Shaheen bouncer thudded into the bat left raised as Head ducked for cover, but landed safely after looping on to the leg side.

His fortune ran out soon after when the left-hander slapped a head-high catch to extra cover and despite holding an overall lead of 323, Australia were sitting a tad uncomfortably at 4-107 inside the day's opening hour.

If Pakistan held hopes of running through their rivals and chasing a target below 400, they were dashed by the familiar obstacles of Usman Khawaja and Mitchell Marsh who combined for a decisive 126-run stand that formally put the game beyond the visitors' reach.

While Khawaja was watchful and stoic in enduring more than five hours in the most challenging conditions, Marsh remained true to his game and unfurled a series of thunderous shots even though they didn't come without inherent risk.

Twice in executing his trademark front-foot pull Marsh was struck on the batting helmet, once via a ball from Aamir Jamal that flew from back of a length and another from Khurram that deflected off a top edge.

Those blows were absorbed by the batter's protective equipment, while Khawaja copped a frightening hit flush on the right forearm that required extensive examination by the Australia team medical staff before the opener was cleared to continue his innings.

According to data collected at Australia Test venues in recent years, the average incidence of batters being struck on the upper body is around 10 times per match.

Come the start of Pakistan's second innings, 19 incidents had been tallied in this with every batter bar David Warner, who survived just five deliveries on Saturday afternoon, wearing at least one on their person as the ball jumped and deviated at speed off the fragmenting surface.

But the Australia pair refused to be cowed into submission, and heaped pressure back on to Pakistan who began to falter as shown when skipper Shan Masood turfed a straightforward chance at mid-off from Marsh when he was on 23.

In the wake of the lunch break, with the lead beyond 400 and a declaration looming, the contrasting pair shifted gear and piled on 47 runs from 32 balls with Khawaja eyeing a richly deserved 16th Test ton.

When the unflappable left-hander reached 90 with a deft hook to the fine leg fence off Shaheen it seemed the achievement was pre-destined, but an upper-cut to third man landed in the hands of Babar prompting Cummins to mitigate any further risk and set his bowlers loose.

We're playing away against Australia, let's be real.

Pat Cummins, Josh Hazelwood, Mitchell Starc, Nathan Lyon...... easily amongst the best Test bowling line ups of all time. Simply need to accept the fact that the team never had the calibre of batsmen to counter such a lethal attack. Aussies beat England in England, until Lyon got injured and the series was drawn.

Need to be honest about what exactly was expected from the Pakistan squad. Not a single player (perhaps Babar... if at all) who's better at his job than his Australian equivalent, not one!

Australia have the better pacers, far better spinner, keeper, batsmen.... just look at the wealth of experience Warner or Smith brings..... then there's the fielding.

Pakistan lost against a far better opposition.

So many delusion pak fans thought pak might perform well on this tour.

As I have said, all 3 matches will be humiliating defeats and none of the matches will go into the 5th day

Well our great teams of 95 to 99 couldn't buy a test down under so can't expect much from this inexperienced lot. It's unfair.

Mitch Marsh is player of the match. "It's been amazing. My first Test at Perth Stadium, and first in Perth for six years. Thanks to everyone for getting around me. When you go out with a biggish lead it takes the pressure off a little, but the wicket was really tricky. We knew our bowlers would be a handful. Bowling hurts way too much, so I'll take the runs. Nice to contribute with the ball. To get one in the right area to Babar, he's a class player, was nice."

Shan Masood "When you come to these shores you look for progress...if you said Australia would play 110 overs, and us 100, I'd take that. We could have batted a bit quicker, missed on 60-70 runs. Bowling-wise thought we did a lot of good things. Not as disciplined as we wanted to be, that's the lesson from the Australian attack. A lot of positive things to take forward. It's never easy when you play two debutants but thought they were very mature. They bowled really well, on another day could gave got more wickets."

Pat Cummins "Great start to the summer, everything fell into place. We've played a lot of cricket, so the build-up was very chilled and relaxed. No hiccups this week, it's all gone to plan. That was huge [from Warner], his and Uzzie's partnership really set the game up for us. [Mitch] is one of the favourites of the west, so pumped to see him do well. Five hundred Test wickets, over decade, all conditions, he just finds a way. He's been stewing on it for six months with his injury."

Kamran Ghulam and Mubasir Khan.

Infact, I have no idea how Mubasir Khan does not make this squad after being man of the tournament in 2 back to back QEAs. Best allrounder in Pakistan and a no brainer in squad.

Nathan Lyon went past 500 Test wickets as Australia rolled over Pakistan, securing a 360-run win in the first Test in Perth.

Lyon, already third on the list of highest wicket-takers for Australia in Tests, has now become the eighth bowler overall to go past 500 Test wickets.

The 36-year-old achieved the feat when he trapped Faheem Ashraf in the front to scalp Pakistan's seventh wicket. He then dismissed Aamer Jamal three balls later to claim his 501st wicket.

Screenshot_20231217_151046_Chrome.jpg

Pakistan, already struggling with an imposing target of 450, did not survive long after that and were dismissed for 89, giving Australia a 360-run win.

This is also Australia's second-biggest win margin by runs against Pakistan in Test cricket.

Earlier in the day, Australia pushed on despite the wickets of Steve Smith and Travis Head with Usman Khawaja and Mitchell Marsh both raising the bat for half-centuries.

The pair accelerated in the middle session, before Khawaja (90) holed out to Babar Azam in the deep while on the attack. Captain Pat Cummins made the declaration for Australia after the dismissal, meaning Marsh finished on 63* from 68 balls.

Australia made an early breakthrough in Pakistan's second innings, with Mitchell Starc finding the edge of Abdullah Shafique (2) in his first over. Josh Hazlewood opened his account soon after by removing captain Shan Masood (2), before Imam-ul-Haq was struck in front by Starc on 10. They lost Babar Azam just before Tea, needing the hosts just six wickets to seal the game.

Australia maintained their pressure on the visitors taking wickets at regular intervals and nipping the budding partnerships between Pakistan batters early. After Lyon's assault, Josh Hazlewood dismissed the last two batters in the same over to put the visitors out of their misery.

Mitchell Marsh was adjudged the Player of the Match for his knocks of 90 and 63* in the match. He also picked up the crucial wicket of Babar Azam in the first innings.

This win means that Pakistan have lost their perfect record on the World Test Championship 2025 table and have dropped down to No.2. Meanwhile, Australia are at No.4 with a PCT of 41.67.

The second Test between the two sides will begin on 26 December at the MCG.

Imagine a team with Babar, Rizwan and Shaheen become the reason why we are never invited again to Australia…

These three are the golden generation of our cricket
Unreal obsession with Rizwan.. where was Rizwan in this match?

Yeah but he'll have to make it above Agha. Don't know about Kamran Ghulam. Who would be replace ?

A cricket team reflects the nation it is from.

Right now IK is in prison. There is no democracy again. The PCB and all structures are turmoil. Results are poor.

Save the nation. Then save cricket.

Yeah but he'll have to make it above Agha. Don't know about Kamran Ghulam. Who would be replace ?
Would take Mubasir over Agha especially if he has to be the lone spinner in the team like today.

Can promote Masood now that we are stuck with him for a while and make space for Ghulam.

Australia took the mickey and didn’t enforce the follow on otherwise the game would have would of been over on day 3!

We all knew this was going to be a whitewash test series for Australia that was never in doubt but to show no fight and just crumble is never ever acceptable, regardless of how good the opposition are!

Australia is not the place to have too many debutantes . Mubasir deserves a nice and easy home Test debut.

Will allow Pakistan to play 3 quicks at home with Mubasir functioning as the 2nd spinner.

Yep. Technically it's an innings defeat because we didn't really avoid follow on.

I'm all for being practical. But real improvement would be taking wickets and taking them quickly. It doesn't really matter if you bat 100 overs when your teams bowling average is 40

Everyone is being real, this is going to be an Aussie whitewash as usual.

What is not acceptable is the lack of application from the batsmen, after the platform in the 1st inns by top 3 there was zero application from middle order. The entire 2nd inns from every batsmen was a shambles.

It was clear as day a lot of these players didn't fancy toughing it out in the middle.

In don't think that is the case with Pakistan that a captain will get respect only when he is performing but even if its like that then nothing wrong in it? A player should always first merit into a team as a performer rather than a captain first. Whereas in Pakistan usually what happens is if some player is side-lined for some time and the current players not performing, then he suddenly becomes the solution of all problems and is brought back as a captain. For example, some fans still backs Sarfaraz and Imad as the best contenders as a captain right now.

Only khurram shehzad was consistently good

Jamal picked up 6fer 2 were gifted and the rest were glory balls against the lower order. If you saw his overall performance he was very inconsistent and unable to be economical and build pressure. He's nothing but a left arm cross between hasan ali and the rock thrower haris rauf but just more fitter his action will eventually lead to shoulder and back injury .

Shaheen was better in opening spell in 2nd innings but overall for his star status he was poor. He didn't stand up should have led the attack but was superceded by the debutant trundler khurram

The batting is just rubbish and that's what happens when you have players who grow up playing on substandard rubbish pitches in domestics moment ball starts going over waist high they simply can't play pace and bounce.

They should rename this series the milestone series as this pretty much allows the Aussies to rack up their stats.

Better pakistan teams have to come to Aus and been whitewashed.

I can see this losing streak of tests exceeding 30 if not more and most of us on here won't be alive to see a Pakistan test win on Australian soil

PAKISTAN WILL LOSE THE 3 MATCH SERIES 0 -4 :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: :ROFLMAO: THEY ARE MINNOW BASHERS BEATING TEAMS LIKE ZIMBABWE, NEPAL , IRELAND ,WEST INDIES ETC. THEY WILL BE BADLY EXPOSED IN THIS SERIES AS THEY WERE IN THE WORLD CUP:ROFLMAO:
BABAR AND SHAHEEN WILL LOOK LIKE NOVICES:LOL::ROFLMAO::D BOTH CANNOT FIT IN THE SHADOWS OF KHOLI AND BUMRAH OR SHAMMI(y)

Some one had to do Pujara. He took countless blows on his body and kept one end blocked. It's easier said than done though.

It was only a matter of how bad Pakistan will lose. Pakistan did not disappoint.

The target was too much for Pak anyway.

This Aussie team is very likable. They play hard, have quality, win loads of stuff but are the best behaved Aussies team in history. 20 years back, Aus would not only win matches but also sledge, abuse, humiliate, belittle the opponent and bring in families in the targeted sledging. Cummins faces so much criticism for not being as tough as earlier Aus captains but he has proved you don't need to be a jerk to be a champion, wonderful guy. Warner also has improved his behavior so much. Soft, I don't think so, gentlemen yes. Great ambassadors of the sport unlike past Aussie teams.

Away WC win, WTC win, away Ashes draw and they would have won that if not for Lyon's injury. More competitive side in India than Ponting and Steve Waugh's XIs. World number 1, current ODI and test champs, won T20 WC the edition before this, and all these achievements with gentlemanly conduct on and off the field.

Final boss in cricket, the platinum standard.

+1

Cummins has made Aus a formidable team without any non-sense on and off the field. Let the performance talk.

Australia's Last 35 Home Tests
Won - 26
Drawn - 5
Lost - 4
Total domination by Australia .
That's a ridiculous home domination by Aus. 35 tests and won 26 of them and lost only 4. W/L of more than 6.

Insane stat. They'll win next WTC final as well, should have entered the final in 2021 but NZ got lucky with the pandemic.

Yet fan's are play down india victory in Australia . Australia is place where team mostly get demolish and stats proving that
From 5 draw two came against India ( Sydney test 2018 where rain runied Indian victory, again Sydney 2021 where Injured vihari and Ashwin earned a hard fought draw ). All 4 lose came against India.

This. Cummins combines ridiculous personal cricketing ability + captaincy + great PR and media skills not seen in an Aussie captain since probably Richie Benaud.

This is a great Australian side, no doubt about it. World T20 + World Cup + WTC wins in last 2 years.

The vast majority of it always comes back to our batting. We just cannot bat in Australian conditions. We showed absolutely zero resistance and our line up was full of batting.

Someone, I think Rana, said the other day something like we have batsmen not bowling pins. I think we will all disagree with that having seen this performance. We simply cannot bat out there and have not gone one iota above what we have been for years in Australia. No amount of tape or practice has changed that in any way.

We’re not the only team that can’t survive out there and even the Indians have been flattened for 36 all out as we’ve seen. But they showed consistent improvement and adaptation in Aus to win phase after phase. With us getting out the same way to the same deliveries no change in approach.

The team need to play aggressively on the back foot to combat the short pitch stuff or leave the ball we try to drive our way to positivity. That’s never worked in these conditions.

Bowling wise, I actually think this version of Shaheen is terrible and we may be better off without him. He’s actually useless with this new action. Shehzad and Jamal are welcome additions and were the only positives alongside some good captaincy.

The pitch became difficult to bat on as the game progressed? Could be. But the game was lost during the first innings.

My expectations were very low, but 89 all out? No words.

InshaAllah we can lose by only 300 runs next game so the team can enjoy new year's with a nice cake.

Some one had to do Pujara. He took countless blows on his body and kept one end blocked. It's easier said than done though.
Imam came close to doing that but then he got abused for being selfish and not showing intent.

Next day, he showed intent and we saw what happened.

Masood got more praise for his pathetic 30 ball cameo in the first innings compared to the resistance showed by Imam who was wearing the Australian bowlers down.

Sums up the mentality and understanding of Pakistan cricket fans.

Rizwan is a no brainer. Sarfaraz has a limited range of shots with the main shot being the sweep shot. That will not work on Australian pitches. Even Sarfaraz's wicket keeping is not up to par. Rizwan on the other hand is not only a superior batter but also a better keeper.

Not sure.

Perth was an extremely tough pitch for even regulars

Sarf and Riz come into play with a ball being some 20-30 overs old

You cannot expose them to the new ball like we did

I would caution against taking Sarf out now.

Pak management needs a good hard look at the MCG surface.

During the 1st Test between Pakistan and Australia, Wasim Akram said:

"Fielding has got to do with the fitness level, if you're not physically fit ... at your prime fitness level, that will eventually affect your fielding,"

Mark Taylor Replied:

"Fielding's one of those things, you've got to want to do it, you've got to want to make a difference and want the ball to come to you and you sense with some of the Pakistan fielders, not all of them, that they don't really want the ball to come to them and that's a dangerous thing to have and you can just about bet that's when it'll come to you."

"A couple of opportunities went begging, they make a big difference."

"Here we are after two days play and they're still 355 runs behind, you hang on to those catches, things might not be that bad."

"It's fitness yes but more importantly it's just attitude in the field and wanting to make a difference, look at someone like Labuschagne who looks to make a difference in the field and often does."

"It's just another string to your bow as a professional cricketer."

Australia bowling Is relentless what Imaam did in the first Innings was correct you have to make these Australia bowlers bowl 3rd and 4th spell and hope they loose energy and rhyth.

Salman Butt in an interview after Pakistan's 360-run defeat in Test series opener against Australia:

"We have an unprofessional approach. We have failed because everyone wants to bring in people from their city or people they have good relations with. People who occupy the top seats must address this. However, despite being in a powerful position, they complain about a player from their region not getting a chance. Nobody wants to talk about merit."

"I was quite surprised. Didn't the Pakistani players know that they had come to Perth? There was going to be pace and bounce there, but three of four batters got out while trying to play on the front foot. There is no need to go on the front foot on such wickets. Even Australian batters would get out here if they started playing drives. Even the guys who have toured Australia in the past played like that. The preparation to play on the back foot and score off good deliveries was completely missing."

"Australia played like true champions. There was a clear difference between the two teams, giving us an idea of where both sides stand in Test cricket, from the understanding of the game to the skillset. We also got to know which team has prioritised Test cricket. Test cricket has not been a priority for Pakistan for a very long time now."
