Chasing a target of 277, South Africa made a shaky start to their innings. Aiden Markram fell early, attempting an unnecessary slog against Nauman Ali, only to be bowled by one that drifted in sharply — a poor shot given the match situation. Wiaan Mulder followed soon after, caught in two minds and edging a delivery to slip for a duck, also off Nauman’s bowling.
However, Ryan Rickelton showed composure against spin, displaying confident footwork and sound technique. He did enjoy a stroke of luck when Abdullah Shafique dropped him on 26 at short leg — a costly miss for Pakistan. At the other end, Tony de Zorzi looked assured and in good touch. With both batters in form, their partnership will be crucial if South Africa are to mount a serious challenge.
That said, the visitors still require 226 more runs on a deteriorating surface, making their task an extremely difficult one.
