• The five-week-long tour will see Pakistan take on England in three Tests and three T20Is

• “This tour holds special significance since this will be Pakistan’s first-ever tour of England for World Test Championship matches,” says Zakir Khan, PCB – Director International Cricket

Lahore, 21 August 2019:

The Pakistan Cricket Board on Wednesday announced the schedule of their men’s team’s tour of England next year. The five-week-long tour, which runs from 30 July till 2 September, will see Pakistan take on England in three Tests and as many as T20Is.

The Test series will be Pakistan’s last World Test Championship (WTC) assignment in their 2019-20 season after they host Sri Lanka and Bangladesh in October and January with a tour of Australia sandwiched in between.

The three T20Is come up with an opportunity to prepare for the ICC T20 World Cup in Australia in October 2020.

The tour will kick off with a Test at the iconic Lord’s ground, where Pakistan came out victorious in their last two matches in the format with the margins of 75 runs and nine wickets in 2016 and 2018, respectively.

The tour also serves up opportunities for Pakistan to register wins at Old Trafford in Manchester – where they last won in 2001 and were defeated on the 2006 and 2016 tours – and Trent Bridge in Nottingham, where they last played in 2010 and are yet to win a Test in four visits.

Pakistan, since 2016, have visited England every year. They toured the British Isles in 2017 for the ICC Champions Trophy and returned home with the prestigious silverware. In 2018, they toured England for a two-match Test series, which was drawn 1-1.

The next year’s tour will go down as Pakistan’s fourth Test tour of England this decade and the sixth this century.

England’s return tour of Pakistan will be in 2022 which will be a split affair. The three-match ODI series is scheduled for October and the three WTC Tests will be held in December.

Zakir Khan, Director – International Cricket, said: “This tour holds special significance since this will be Pakistan’s first-ever tour of England for World Test Championship matches.

“A tour of England tests the skills and limits of the visiting sides and I anticipate this tour to help Pakistan furnish their red-ball skills and also prepare them for the all-important ICC T20 World Cup in Australia latter in 2020.

“The PCB and the English and Wales Cricket Board enjoy an amicable relationship and this being Pakistan’s third bi-lateral tour of England in the last four years perfectly mirrors it. In 2010, the ECB provided the PCB facilities to host Australia in a two-match Test series.”

Complete schedule:

• 1st Test match, England v Pakistan, 30 July-3 August 2020, Lord’s, London

• 2nd Test match, England v Pakistan, 7-11 August 2020, Old Trafford, Manchester

• 3rd Test match, England v Pakistan, 20-24 August 2020, Trent Bridge, Nottingham

• 1st T20I, England v Pakistan, Saturday 29 August 2020, Headingley, Leeds

• 2nd T20I, England v Pakistan, Monday 31 August 2020, Sophia Gardens, Cardiff

• 3rd T20I, England v Pakistan, Wednesday 2 September 2020, Ageas Bowl, Southampton

The ECB today announced next summer’s international schedule for England’s men’s teams. England will play six Tests as part of the ICC World Test Championship, six One Day Internationals and six International T20 matches, facing four different international teams.

The summer 2020 schedule brings international matches against:

WEST INDIES - The international summer starts at the Kia Oval in June with the first of a three-match Test series against West Indies. The second Test will be played at Edgbaston with the third Test taking place at Lord’s. England will be looking to gain revenge after losing the Test series in the Caribbean last winter.

AUSTRALIA – After an Ashes summer in 2019, Australia returns to England for a three-match IT20 series across the north of England with matches at Emirates Riverside, Emerald Headingley and Emirates Old Trafford. The series will add further significance with both teams wanting to impress ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia in the autumn of 2020. Australia round off their tour with a three-match ODI series against World Champions England at Lord’s, Ageas Bowl and The Bristol County Ground.

PAKISTAN – Pakistan will face Joe Root’s England in a three-match Test series in July and August at Lord’s, Emirates Old Trafford and Trent Bridge. With the emphasis around IT20 cricket, England will face a real test of their credentials against the world’s best side in Pakistan with three matches at Emerald Headingley, Sophia Gardens and Ageas Bowl.

IRELAND – The summer of cricket is complete with a three-match ODI series against Ireland. Trent Bridge, Edgbaston and the Kia Oval.

Confirming the schedule, ECB Chief Executive Officer Tom Harrison said:

“The ICC World Test Championship will add significance and context to the Test Series against West Indies and Pakistan. Where every Test matters, there will be lots of points to play for as England continue their efforts to reach the inaugural World Test Championship final in June 2021.

“Alongside the red ball matches, England’s ODI contests against Australia, and Ireland will see the World Champions return to home soil with big crowds expected at all venues. With further interest in IT20 cricket, the six-matches against Australia and the world number one side Pakistan will offer a fascinating guide to form ahead of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup in Australia during the autumn of 2020.

“Following a once-in-a-generation summer which has seen exceptional demand for tickets, all men’s international host venues will be running ticket ballots. We would urge fans to register their interest now and plan for another big summer of cricket.”

As the England and Wales Cricket Board announce the England men's international schedule for 2020, Sophia Gardens and Cardiff will host their seventh IT20 as Pakistan travel to Wales to face England.

Pakistan will take on England on Monday, 31st August 2020 (2.30pm start), with the bank holiday welcoming some high quality international cricket between two top level IT20 sides, as both sides look to finalise their preparations ahead of the T20 World Cup in Australia in the autumn of 2020.

England have never lost an IT20 at Sophia Gardens, with six victories from six attempts including last year's triumph over Pakistan and famous wins over South Africa and India.

Following an incredible year of cricket in which England won the World Cup and is currently hosting an epic Ashes battle, the schedule for 2020 sees England play six Tests, as part of the ICC World Test Championship, six One Day Internationals and six International T20 matches, facing four different international teams.

The West Indies start the international summer in June with three Test matches, before Australia arrive for three IT20s and three ODIs throughout July. Pakistan will then face England in three Tests, followed by three IT20 matches with Sophia Gardens hosting the 2nd IT20 of the series. Ireland finish off another great international summer of cricket with a three-match ODI series in September.

If Pakistan gets a drubbing, it may be our last 3 test series in England, similar to how after the pathetic performance in 2016 we are now relegated to the category of 2 tests in Australia (similar to Sri Lanka and Bangladesh).

Awesome what summer ahead.....can't wait

Pakistan need to arrive no later than 1 July and play 3 x 4 day matches before the First Test.

I would suggest doing a deal with Ireland, and taking 24 players for a two week camp in Dublin from 1-15 July, including two 4 day Pakistan v Pakistan A matches (3-6 and 11-14 July).

Then cull the squad down to 18 players and play 2 Four Day Tests v Ireland on 16-19 July and 23-26 July.

Then fly to London on Monday 27 July to prepare for the First Test on Friday 31 July.

That requires no First class matches in England, but gives four different Test quality preparation matches.

Glamorgan's chief executive Hugh Morris has expressed delight at the England & Wales Cricket Board (ECB) allotting Cardiff's Sophia Gardens one of the three T20Is between England and Pakistan in 2020, while hoping that the game attracts a full house.

The ECB on Wednesday announced the home fixtures for England in 2020, which includes three Tests and three T20Is against Pakistan between July 30 to September 2 next year.

The second T20I is scheduled for August 31 at Sophia Gardens, the biggest cricket stadium in Wales, and Morris felt this was good for Glamorgan.

"It's very good news; we are delighted to welcome Pakistan back to Cardiff for an IT20 game," said Morris. "They are one of the top teams in the world, it should be exciting. We had a really good game at the beginning of this year between England and Pakistan, and we are really excited by another one. It's on Bank Holiday Monday next year as well, 31st August, and we are looking for another bumper crowd."

Sophia Gardens hosted two matches during the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup, and in May a T20I was played there between England and Pakistan.

Matches in the United Kingdom involving Pakistan are generally very well attended, given the number of Pakistan-origin citizens. During the 2019 World Cup, almost every Pakistan game was sold out, and even when the team's game against Sri Lanka in Bristol was washed out, there were many Pakistan supporters in attendance. Some of them, whom CricketCountry spoke to at the County Ground while the rain lashed down, had travelled for several hours to get to the game.

Morris looked forward to fans of Pakistan showing up in Cardiff for next summer's T20I.

"To have one of the top teams in the world will be great for the cricket lovers of Wales," he said. "Pakistan bring a lot of excitement, they, as I say, are one of the top teams in the world. They always develop unusual talents, and are always great to see. Their spectators love cricket, they make a great deal of noise in the stadium, and create a great atmosphere."

(READ: Glamorgan's Asian connection, from Majid Khan to Ravi Shastri)

Pakistan cricket has a distinct connection with Glamorgan cricket, and indeed with Sophia Gardens. Pakistan greats Majid Khan, Javed Miandad and Waqar Younis enjoyed success and adulation when they played for Glamorgan County Cricket Club.

Majid remains a legend in Glamorgan cricket talk, chiefly because of the numerous match-winning innings he played for the club when they won the County Championship in 1969. During the 1981 season, Miandad scored eight hundreds and totalled 2,083 first-class runs.

Waqar was Glamorgan's overseas signing in 1997 and had an outstanding season, with several eye-catching bowling performances. Several of his photos adorn the walls inside Sophia Gardens.
