What's new

Pakistan bowled out for 294, stretch match into Day 4, set South Africa target of 41 to win 2nd Test

Only 4 of the 22 players failed with the bat to reach double figures in the match:

Imam-ul-Haq
Fakhar Zaman
Azhar Ali
Yasir Shah

Just 100 short a fighting total, 200 of a winnning one. At least they took it to day 4.

SA will try and get these as quickly as possible i guess now.

We were 170-2 and could have squeezed a lead of 150 at least but in typical pakistan fashion we collapsed once again

Totally. What I meant was some of them did enough to keep their places.

Just shows that these hacky bouncy bowlers can be brought down to earth. Great batting by Shan, Asad, and Babar. Even Shaheen and Abbas showed a lot of fight. We're gonna win at Jo'burg for sure. This innings has lifted our team.

This could have been a very different game if bavuma was given out by third umpire.

it will finish in first hour tommorow & Pakistan will loose next test match as well if they play like this.. so 3-0 whitewash is on the cards...

41 is not that easy a target against world's best bowling line up. SA have their task cut out.

No 5fer for stern, at least we took match to 4th day.... And blah blah.... Did key khush rakhno ko ghalib yeah khayal achha hai

But Pakistan wasted the opportunity as they had a chance to bat first in both the tests.

Totally. Especially in the first match, they got oppurtunity even in the 2nd innings to give a big total.

Well if they were hacky bouncy bowlers you wouldn't be staring at 2-0 ,yes it has been a good fight back but that's about it, these innings were needed in the first innings more so than the second innings, you guys should be thankful that you were not facing ngidi, steyn is way past his prime and even then he has been able to nab 4 wickets ,regarding jo'burg you don't know what team would you play and they play what the conditions would be or what will happen at toss so let's just say wait for the actual game to begin.

Cricket is a game of fine margins.. unfortunately our batsmen don’t understand that..
Azhar was a tad unlucky but he should have been getting forward and playing with a straight bat..
Imam should have left his one alone etc etc

20-30 runs from either of them and Safaraz would have allowed parternships to grow and we would be defending 175-200 rather then 40 runs...

We tend to lose our brains in these situations far more then we should be and it literally results in defeats after defeats when we could easily have been winning these games.

We lose not because of lack of any talent but because of lack of mental awareness...

Pakistan was suppose to go down under 150 but they were able to enforce another day on the Proteas which is a small success.

Shan Masood has been the find of the series, he faced the new bowl today and almost carried the team thruout the innings. Showed the world Pakistan second string is miles better than the Pakistan batting XI which is keeping their place due to corruption and nepotism of selectors. Taught Babar Azam and other seniors how to play pull shot.

Anotherplayer who helped Pakistan survive another day was Abbas. His 10 odd runs outshine the selfish Babars and Shafiqs who were playing for themselveswhile he played for the total. Saved Pakistan from innings defeat and contributed 30+ runs with no. 11 to give Proteas batters some time in the middle.

Also there were some tactical blunders from India that led to their downfall, ala dropping bhuvi and rahane.

India matched South Africa toe to toe and lost only in the crucial junctures it took ab special in both matches to defeat India .

India competed better, nobody is denying it.

The dead uae pitches is destroying Pakistan cricket slowly but surely....there is no lack of talent...pcb should do something to improve the UAE pitches or change there home series venues...and the players should be asked to use their brain while playing in the ground..

It's very difficult to make sense of what you're trying to say.

Watched today's play. I was impressed with Shan and Babar Azam. They stood tall against arguably the best attack in the world in their home conditions. Asad shafiq looked fluent but u cannot rely on Asad Shafiq. He and Azhar should not be dropped. Shan and Azhar should be the operners. Babar should bat at 5. Reason for Pakistans poor performance is that it is carrying too many underperformer. Imam, Fakhar, Sarfraz have proved to be burden plus Yasir shah on these conditions in ineffective. This makes 4 players who r not contributing. Very very poor selection by the selection commitee . Rizwan the other keeper is in the form of his life. He and Shan piled up plenty of runs in the A side. It's really sad to see the condition of the pakistan side Even though their PM was a great cricketer. Imran Khan need to take some tough decision .

No more than Pak blunders of selecting Yasir twice on pacey pitches offering no turn; selecting unfit players in squad like Haris and Shadab etc etc.
There is a big gulf between Pakistan and India in terms of batting, and bowlers cannot do much if your batsmen do not give them runs to bowl with.
Anyway better performance today but still Shan and Babar aside Pak batting needs a change.

Fakhar, Yasir and Imam need dropping.
Maybe even Sarfaraz should give up and give Rizwan a chance

Next match will be going to Day 5 and Pakistan might win if they play like this in the first innings as well ..
Faf won't dare to ask Pakistan to bat if he wins toss again ....

Why not Day 1 was probably the best day for bowling with fresh pitch and dodgy opposition batting line up

Faf felt the pressure after not deciding to take the extra 30 mins. Clearly afraid of a mini top order collapse trying to get quick runs. He was quick to move the field when Pakistan batted well. Is he a true leader of men? Zipper-gate makes me think maybe he's not the most sensible person when under pressure.

Umpire Joel - giving Sarfraz out was a big blow, there was so much doubt on height and with the way the pitch behaving was as well. That was vexing.

Pakistan with new found confidence could easily get to 250 + in first innings ... that will change the complexion of the game completely

i think it is a moral victory for the pakistan team. Now they have the self confidence that they can actually outperform the RSA counter parts in batting. I won't be surprise if Pakistan will pile up 300+ in the next match.

This is the best performance I've ever seen in South Africa by an Asian side against a world class South African attack. This attack is equivalent to that of a peak Donald, Pollock & co. they'd toss subcontinent teams aside as if they were rag dolls.

Twice has Pakistan been in a commanding position, twice they've surrendered the initiative 170/2 should have been 350/5 at stumps, what a pity. Been a very competitive series. Poor application (mental), than actual talent cost them the series. To be fair they don't tour South Africa very often.

How many tours does Sri Lanka have in SA compared to Pakistan? Really not fair, took them a Test and an innings to get the hang of the conditions. They'll probably edge the third Test if they apply themselves and play without fear.

Pakistan competed very well in SA...being no.1 ranked, India lost every match cheaply there..

I think Pakistan can still win this game if they can get SA all out for 30 runs

What pressure? Scored a ton, now his team will win the Test with a day to spare thanks to him and his brilliant captaincy.

Agree. It's the irony of the world we live in. Steve Smith gets banned when one of his team mates tampers with the ball while Faf himself molests the ball against his zipper and is rewarded with captaincy.

Checked the Pak scoreboard, only way to scare the likes of express bowlers like rabada, steyn is to counter attack and I think asad, masood, babar did quite well. If only 1-2 batsmen stayed at the wicket it would have been a 150-175 lead which is not easy for the "chasing specialist" south africa.

All said and done, a courageous effort from Pak batsmen which they should take heart from and more batsmen should chip in - especially, azhar and fakhar.

All SA teams get into shell thinking they can wear out the likes of steyn, rabada.
They are so effective bowling in the corridor bowl after bowl - the only way to disturb them is counter attack them. If you are losing, lose while fighting than defending.

Haris has been a huge loss for us. Could've been the difference maker the in the 1st test.

Also not playing 4 seamers has cost us. Idiots still thinking this is UAE and Yasir is some all conditions specialist. He was always gonna be useless here.

The batting approach of Masood, Shafiq, Azam was perfect in this innings. You have got to be excellent on the Hook, Pull and Cut Shot in South Africa and have to bat aggressively, punishing bad deliveries like it's your job.

South Africa is not the place for Misbah ul Haq and Azhar Ali type batting

Just like they did in Sri Lanka.

Mickey Arthur was very pleased with how Shan, Shafiq and Babar batted in the second innings. It showed that he doesn't really care too much about losing but how you play the game. Saw highlights of the three and I feel much better compared to before

Miraculously winning the third test and I will be satisfied with the tour given that we weren't favorites to begin with
