Pakistan and China are working on a proposal to establish a new regional organisation that could potentially replace the now-defunct South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC).

Discussions between Islamabad and Beijing are now at an advanced stage as both sides are convinced that a new organisation is need of the hour for regional integration and connectivity, according to diplomatic sources familiar with the development.

The recent trilateral meeting of Pakistan, China and Bangladesh held in Kunming, China, was part of those diplomatic maneuvers.

The meeting attended by senior diplomats from three countries was first of its kind that raised eyebrows in India.

The ultimate goal of the meeting in Kunming on June 19 was to invite other South Asian countries, which were part of SAARC, to join the new grouping.

India, according to sources, would be invited to the new proposed forum but given its divergent interests, it is unlikely to respond positively.

Nevertheless, other countries including Sri Lanka, Maldives, Afghanistan to name a few are expected to be part of the grouping.

The main purpose of the new organisation is to seek greater regional engagement through enhanced trade and connectivity.

If the proposal is materialised, SAARC, which was once dubbed European Union (EU) of South Asia, would be dead as ever.

SAARC could not achieve its stated objectives as it remained hostage to adversarial ties between Pakistan and India.

The regional grouping last held its summit a decade ago. Pakistan was to host the summit in 2016 but India boycotted the meeting in Islamabad. Bangladesh, which was at the time ruled by pro-India Sheikh Hasina Wajid, also joined New Delhi in staying away from the summit.

Since then no serious efforts were made to revive the organisation, though Pakistan was keen to host the summit.

Recently, SAARC was dealt with another fatal blow when India withdrew from offering special visas under the organization to Pakistani businessmen following the Pahalgam attack.

Pakistan and China were discussing the proposal of new organization for months and came to the conclusion that like-minded countries should join hands for better future.

India, observers believe, because of its divergent interests finds itself misfit in other regional groupings such as Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). Prime Minister Narendra Modi skipped the last two SCO summits. The 10-member security alliance comprises China, Russia, Iran, Pakistan and some central Asian States.

The presence of China and Russia often refers the SCO as regional bloc to challenge West. However, India in recent years seems to be at odds with the SCO agenda.

Its not been a good time for India and Indians . They lost a war badly, nobody trusts them, Modi getting no hugs from Trump , cant defend 400 in 2nd innings and now nobody wants to even talk to them. :sachin

This is what happens when an incompetent, illiterate, and idiotic chaiwala runs a country.

RSS/Modi has been damaging for India. India became isolated both regionally and globally.

India have lost every single conflict (2019, 2025, and border clash with China) since chaiwala came to power.

Every South Asian country should be allowed to join minus India. :inti

China, Bangladesh, and Pakistan have already formed a tri-state strategic alliance. See below:

China, Bangladesh and Pakistan form historic tri-state strategic alliance

ISLAMABAD:
China, Pakistan, and Bangladesh have agreed to deepen their trilateral cooperation across various sectors at their first-ever summit held in Kunming, China.

The meeting, which took place earlier this week in Yunnan province, was attended by Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong representing China, Acting Foreign Secretary Ruhul Alam Siddique representing Bangladesh, and Additional Secretary Imran Ahmed Siddiqui representing Pakistan. Pakistan’s Foreign Secretary Amna Baloch participated via video link.

During the summit, the three countries pledged to work together based on the principles of “good-neighborliness, equality and mutual trust, openness and inclusiveness, common development, and win-win cooperation,” according to a joint statement issued following the meeting.

The countries committed to exploring collaborative projects in key areas such as trade, industry, maritime affairs, water resources, agriculture, climate change, health, education, youth engagement, culture, and think tank collaboration.

A trilateral working group will be formed to oversee the implementation of the agreed initiatives, aimed at enhancing economic growth and improving living standards across the three nations. The statement highlighted that the trilateral framework is rooted in “true multilateralism and open regionalism” and emphasized that it is “not directed at any third party.”

On the sidelines of the summit, Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong held bilateral meetings with both Ruhul Alam Siddique and Imran Ahmed Siddiqui.

He also met with Haji Mawlawi Abdul Salam Hanafi, acting deputy prime minister of Afghanistan’s interim Taliban administration, signaling broader regional discussions.

I thought that was already a bloc called Chinese Debt empire- Lanka tasted it , Africa is tasting it, Pakistan is rolling over it

Could have been Indian debt empire but India was too busy pushing neighbours into China's pocket. Congrats.

No it couldn't be an Indian debt empire because Chinese are better innovators than anyone west of India in Asian continent will ever be.

In geopolitics, as in life, intent/niyat is everything.

If China, Pakistan, and Bangladesh were to forge an alliance rooted in sincere purpose aimed at truly uplifting their populations, modernizing their economies, and pursuing genuine, people-centric development there’s no reason they wouldn’t succeed.

But that is precisely where the cracks begin to show, in intent.

Let’s not pretend this is about development. Time and again, alliances with superpowers like the United States were entered into not with a focus on national transformation, but with geopolitical opportunism for your dictatorship hoping to leverage temporary favors for short-term gains and building personal empires millions of dollars, often at the cost of long-term national integrity.

For Pakistan, history should be a teacher. What did your alliance with the world’s richest and most powerful nation bring you for decades?Foreign patronage simply cannot replace internal reform. Without genuine people-first policies and hard institutional work, no external partnership can rescue a nation from itself.

As for Bangladesh, its leadership must tread far more carefully. Unlike Pakistan, which despite its deep flaws is buffered by its nuclear deterrence, Bangladesh lacks such a strategic shield. Any willingness to host Chinese naval or air infrastructure near India’s borders or waters could easily make it a frontline target in the event of a regional military escalation. They must ask themselves: is it wise to entangle the future of 170 million people in a rivalry they have no real leverage over?
Would that me a smart move for their sovereignty.

India, in contrast remains fundamentally unshaken by these developments not because we underestimate them, but because we recognize their structural weaknesses. We are invested in much better and safer partnerships with nations that offer mutual respect, robust markets, and dependable long term collaboration opportunities from the United States to Europe to Southeast Asia and Africa. If anyone feels India will be envious of China engaging with Pakistan and Bangladesh, they need to know better.

Where China spends billions in risky corridors through politically unstable terrain, India is building deep, diversified, and forward-looking partnerships. We are very secure and confident with the our position. Let China become the financier of the troubled nations who do not know where they wanna be.

As for Pakistan and Bangladesh, good luck choosing this path in trying to antagonize India in the region but you must remain very very aware of the consequences of the same. If you think you can get away with your mischiefs in the region, you’re grossly mistaken. India remains the dreaded Sheriff in the town and the true King of the Indian Ocean.

Pak-China-North Korea-Iran-BangladeshBrothers. They should form a block. :salute

India are too stubborn for their own good, leave them behind I say.

Its a mouth watering prospect for India to see China spending billions in our neighbourhood which can all go in flames very quickly.

Art of war says avoid direct conflict if the enemy is busy doing stupid stuff. Let him waste his time and resources while you are consolidating for the right time to attack when it will hurt the most.

Let China overspend when they have abundant cash flows and dig its own grave trying to flex beyond its limits.

SAARC mostly benefits India. Also, it has achieved very little.

SAARC should be dissolved. It is useless just like UN. :inti
SAARC had the potential to be a super power if it wasnt for the shenanigans from India and Pakistan.

Lol Indian Defense chief scared already

'China, Pakistan, Bangladesh may be converging': CDS flags major new threat to India

Chief of Defence Staff General Anil Chauhan on Tuesday warned of a possible strategic convergence between China, Pakistan, and Bangladesh—a development he said could carry serious long-term implications for India’s security and regional stability.

Speaking at the launch of the Observer Research Foundation’s Foreign Policy Survey, Gen. Chauhan flagged the shifting geopolitical order and called for sharper assessments of evolving alignments across South Asia.

He stressed that India’s strategic autonomy must not be misread as isolationism. “Frequent shifts in governments across South Asia, along with changing ideological perspectives and geopolitical priorities, are major challenges,” he said.

The CDS singled out the increasing Chinese presence in India’s neighbourhood, warning that a growing China-Pakistan-Bangladesh axis could test India’s security architecture in new ways. He also expressed concern over what he called the United States’ ambiguous position in the Indo-Pacific and West Asia.

“The world is in flux—caught in a transition between two orders. Amid this chaos, the U.S. position further complicates matters,” he said, without citing specifics.

Gen. Chauhan also highlighted the strategic fallout of debt diplomacy in the Indian Ocean Region, where China’s lending has created vulnerabilities among smaller nations. He pointed to Sri Lanka’s 2022 crisis and India’s $3 billion bailout as an example of the growing risks.

Addressing questions on Operation Sindoor, launched in response to a deadly terror attack in Pahalgam that killed 26 civilians, the CDS confirmed Indian strikes on multiple terror camps across the LoC. He said Pakistan escalated the conflict into conventional warfare, limiting its own strategic options.

On possible Chinese involvement, he was cautious. “Pakistan relies heavily on Chinese defence platforms. This naturally requires OEM presence in Pakistan under civil liability arrangements. However, whether the support was state-sponsored is yet to be conclusively established,” he said.
