Pakistan defeat South Africa by 49 runs to keep hopes of a semi-final birth alive at the World Cup

THE Standard Bank Proteas top order were unable to break the runs-scoring drought that has afflicted them throughout the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup as they crashed to defeat by 49 runs against Pakistan at Lord’s in London on Sunday.

The result effectively rules the Proteas out of qualifying for the semi-finals as they can mathematically no longer score enough points to qualify.

The Proteas, set to score 309 for victory, produced a batting performance that was a mirror of what has happened previously. Quinton de Kock (47 off 60 balls, 3 fours and 2 sixes) and Faf du Plessis (63 off 79 balls, 5 fours) both got good starts but were not able to convert them into the substantial contributions that were needed to chase down such a big total.

Rassie van der Dussen and David Miller then perished, trying to force the pace. In the case of Miller he was not helped by a groin strain injury suffered while fielding which meant he had to concentrate on hitting boundaries as sharp running between the wickets was not an option open to him.

The Proteas were still in the game after 30 overs when they only trailed Pakistan by 5 runs on comparative run rates although they had lost an extra wicket but scoring 149 off the last 15 overs and 120 in the final 10 proved beyond them.

That Pakistan were able to set such a challenging target after winning the toss and deciding to bat first was the result in the first place of a rapid first-wicket partnership of 81 between Imam-ul-Haq and Fakhar Zaman which included making 58 in the opening power play.

Babar Azam then chimed in with 69 (80 balls, 7 fours) but the real damage was inflicted by Haris Sohail who was playing only his second match of the tournament. He blasted his way to 89 off just 59 balls (9 fours and 3 sixes) and shared vital stands of 81 for the fourth wicket with Azam and 71 for the fifth with Imad Wasim. The latter stand took only 40 balls.

It enabled Pakistan to score 165 runs in their last 20 overs with 91 of those coming in the last 10.

The Proteas target might have been even bigger had Lundi Ngidi not taken 3 wickets in 6 balls at the back end of the innings.

As always, the star of the Proteas attack was Imran Tahir who displayed excellent control in taking 2/41 and has now gone past Allan Donald as South Africa’s leading wicket-taker in World Cup tournaments from five fewer matches. His return catch to dismiss Imam to establish the new mark was a special effort.

The Proteas were never able to get on top of the well-balanced Pakistan attack and were not able to score more than 54 runs in any of the 10 over splits until the final 10 when they managed 70.

Mohammed Amir gave Pakistan just the start they needed by getting rid of Hashim Amla cheaply and, in spite of a poor fielding display that saw numerous chances go down, they continued to work their way through the Proteas top order with the Proteas going into the last four overs with only 3 wickets in hand.

This made an all-out assault virtually impossible. Andile Phehlukwayo nevertheless finished with a defiant 46 (32 balls, 6 fours).

The Proteas play their penultimate match against Sri Lanka at Chester-le-Street on Friday.

Good win, 3 more to go, scoreboard watching is never good but whatever nothing you can do now.

Shaheen Imad out next game, get Hasnain and Hasan (he's bad yes, but not worse than Imad) back in.

Aamir is a terrible fielder, terrible, atrocious, very hard to watch.

Excellent performance.

Pakistan have found their best 11. Might be too late, but if they come out with a decent ratio of wins/losses, I'll be satisfied. (ie., with the rest of their games).

The rapid rate at which South Africa´s cricket is going down, it worries me a lot as a cricket fan. We already only have a handful of competitive teams in the world. So world cricket needs a strong Sri Lanka and South Africa.

Good win, although the fielding meant it wasn't as big a margin as it should have been. This was probably Pakistan's best bowling performance in the competition so far.

Could see the effort - that's all I ask, because invariably if you put the effort in you're guaranteed to playe better.

Good win, but few drops again not ideal - didn't cost today but should continue to work on our game. These runs will count in tighter games in general even if the qualification and NRR ship has sailed.

Boys played well. They just need that confidence and know that the fans will not tolerate lack of effort.

Big game against NZ but they are beatable.

Not really sure what Imad did wrong tbh. At a push Hasnain comes in for Shaheen but don't need to tinker with this lineup imo.

Great win for the lads, will do a lot for the confidence. Fielding will improve as (let's hope) the performances and the confidence improves.

Fielding wasn't up to the mark against any other top team like New Zealand we won't be able to win with this type of fielding.

Shaheen actually got the basics right today and hopefully his wicket sparks from confidence

Congrats Pakistan Commiserations SA fans. This season not all them at he’s are choking. They are just not good enough.

To beat New Zealand, you need to take every catch possible, go for every run out possible, stop boundaries. We have the bowlers to trouble them but need to keep attacking and sharp fielding is a must!

What a game, fantastic game. I was there......

Next gamr NZ...

I was there for once very little heart ache in the match. All players have their best. Ground fielding was good today.Pity we missed many catches otherwise could have been 80 to 100 runs win. Phelkowayoa always gives Pak hard time.

The match thread during Pakistan’s innings had some absurd posts.
“We need 330”
“Barbar is batting to slow”
“We are pathetic” etc etc

It seems that sometimes some of our posters display the same lack of game awareness as our players do

Really? Really? This guy bowls only one direction away from right handed and into left hander and his length is half volley every ball. No control what so ever. I just don't see the love people have with this bakwas. His fielding is also atrocious.

I didn't watch the first half of the Pakistani innings (match started 4:30am local time). How did Imam and Hafeez look?

Their SR looked quite weak considering the conditions and the start.

Am I living in some kind of bizarro world?

Why are their people dropping Imad for this game? Cricket selection ADHD style?

He provided EXACTLY what you want from your allrounder.... He scored the quick runs & power hitting cameo down the order to boost your run rate that no one else has been able to do ALL TOURNAMENT.

Then he comes in & bowls tight in partnerships & goes at a very economical 4.8 rpo (which will win you most any modern one layer) in a chase where the asking rate is 6+ to start with. He's putting the squeeze on. Done his job as finger spinner to a tee. Batted to situation unselfishly & effectively.

Weird stuff here sometimes.

He is the height of Ambrose or Garner but someone in the set up has tried to make him into a Pakistan swing bowler, when his body & action is better suited to a McGrath, Ambrose, Garner length, hit the deck, get bounce & seam & use your pace & height.

People hating on Imad for no reason. He is way better than Pak’s beloved swagsters Hassan and Faheem.

Couldn't agree more that he should be a hit the deck bowler but why is he picked again and again while the likes of the wastrel Ramiz and some fans drool over this "taluntttedd Youngesterrr".

Ami correct in thinking that if team Pakistan wins all of their remaining games they will qualify for the semi finals providing England lose at least one match, which seems likely given they are yet to face India or Australia. Personally I feel most nervous over the clash against Bangladesh. They are batting really well and even still I feel our batting hasn’t really clicked. Too many starts and no one converting them into big scores. At the ground yesterday it became even more evident the lack of singles taken.

The Pakistan fans have the right to celebrate this win to no ends, but I still can´t help but rue the fact that Sarfraz won two tosses in the games before this one and elected to bowl first in both. If only, if only he´d elected to bat first in at least one of those two matches...... But.... let bygones be bygones. Now is the time to bring your best game to the tournament!

If Pakistan realise that bowling first isn't going to be a good idea and improve their fielding, I think they can beat NZ, BD and AFG. Was a controlling performance today which is quite a pleasant surprise. Never did I feel that the game was getting to a point where SA were favourites, even during that slow period in the middle overs.

For the fans and rightly so. The crowd support at Lord's was unreal!

Wait, I thought England needs to lose at least 2/3 for us to go through
