Johannesburg, 30 January 2020:
Pakistan U19 captain Rohail Nazir is aiming to give a match winning performance and lead his side to a victory against Afghanistan when the two sides clash in the fourth quarter-final of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup Super League at the Willowmoore Park, Benoni on Friday.
Pakistan, the two-time champion dominated Group C but had to finish on the second spot due to a rained-off game against Bangladesh despite having reduced the eventual table-toppers to 106 for nine in 25 overs, last Friday at the JB Marks, Oval, Potchefstroom.
Pakistan team rested for two days following the match against Bangladesh before embarking on a gruelling four-day training and practice workout ahead of the quarter-final clash against their western neighbours.
They had an injury concern on Monday when opener Abdul Wahid Bangalzai who featured in the game against Bangladesh, twisted his ankle in the training session. He rested for the last two days before taking part in the training session on Thursday; a decision on his inclusion will be made on the morning of the match.
Rohail meanwhile is aiming to make-up for his failure in the game against Zimbabwe and lead the team from the front after having spent an extended time in nets this week.
Rohail Nazir said: “We have worked very hard in the last three days, the head coach has spoken to us and we have worked out a strategy to counter Afghanistan, who are a good team. I am confident that the team will deliver in the all-important match which is a do-or-die game for us.
“Unfortunately, I got out for a duck against Zimbabwe but I know it is high time for me to deliver for the team along with Haider Ali. I have worked hard on my game, during the three-day break and I feel I am prepared to deliver the goods for the team since these games are the ones that matter most.
“I am mentally prepared to lead the team to victory. Our lower middle-order has played very well so far, the way the batsmen applied themselves in the game against Zimbabwe gives me a lot of satisfaction. Now it is the time for Haider and me to excel and provide support which will surely improve the team performance further. The way we fought against Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, gives me the confidence that we will do well against Afghanistan.
“I am very pleased with our bowlers; we have a very good left-armer (Tahir Hussain) while Amir Khan also did well after coming into the team. Abbas Afridi provides great back-up in the middle overs while we have a specialist spinner Aamir Ali, who also has done very well so far. I have full confidence in the abilities of my bowling attack.”

I have a feeling the entire point of Shehzad playing was to give him two world cups. Ijaz did something similar with Babar Azam if I remember correctly.
Remains to be seen if Shehzad justifies that selection in 2 years.

Apart from Haris or may be Qasim the whole team has lack of fighting attitude. They are too defensive, timid and hide in shell after loosing a wicket and let the opposition to dominate them. By aggression with little bit maturity sometime a weak team can challenge big teams.
The Australia team with nobody shows how to fight back and cover up your defects/skill by aggression and never give up attitude.

However, there will be a lot at stake when they take on New Zealand who lost their Super League semi-final to Bangladesh in Potchefstroom on Thursday. The boys in green are eager to end with a positive result by sealing the third spot.
Finishing third will help Pakistan U19 improve on their fourth spot in the last ICC U19 Cricket World Cup played in New Zealand in 2018.
Head coach Ijaz Ahmed confirmed at least one change in the eleven for tomorrow as left-arm-pacer Tahir Hussain has been ruled out of the match due to a back injury.
Ijaz Ahmed said: “The third place play-off is a very important game for us as we want to finish the tournament on a high. We are practicing the same way we had for every game. We want to finish third.
“We have told the players that it is another game and they should concentrate on their daily processes rather than worrying too much. This phase is also a part of the development of the players and a lesson that should come in handy for them in their careers ahead.
“I strongly feel these players have the potential to progress to a bigger stage. This bunch of players is very capable and some of them will surely represent Pakistan, play the HBL Pakistan Super League and first-class cricket in the days ahead. As a coach it gives me great pleasure to work on the players full of potential, the World Cup was part of their development and they have done fairly well in that aspect.
The team will meanwhile fly out of Johannesburg on Sunday morning; the players are expected to reach their home cities in the wee hours of Monday, 10 February.

Persistent and heavy rain forced the cancellation of the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2020 third position play-off between Pakistan and New Zealand at the Willowmoore Park, Benoni on Saturday.
The wash-out meant a third place finish for two-time champions Pakistan on the virtue of more points in group matches. Pakistan who were placed in Group C and finished with five points while New Zealand, who were in Group A, finished the group stage with three points.
Heavy overnight rain followed by persistent rain delayed the start of the game on Saturday morning. With the relentless rainfall in Benoni, the match was called-off by the umpires with no prospect of a start even 75 minutes after the scheduled 10am start, the toss was scheduled at 9:30am.
Pakistan who were beaten by India in the semi-final, finish one spot better than their number four finish in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2018. The third position play-off was also washed out without a ball bowled between Pakistan and Afghanistan in 2018, the Afghans who were higher placed than Pakistan at the group stage finished third on that occasion.
For Pakistan batsman Haris Khan top-scored in the ICC U19 Cricket World Cup 2020 with 131 runs in three innings of five games. Seamer Abbas Afridi took nine wickets in five matches to finish at the top of the wicket-takers’ list for Pakistan.
Pakistan beat Scotland and Zimbabwe in their Group C games, while their match against Bangladesh ended in No Result when rain interrupted play with Bangladesh tottering at 106 for nine in 25 overs.
Pakistan went on to defeat Afghanistan by six wickets in their quarter-final match before losing to India by 10 wickets in the semi-final.
