This is something Pakistan is lacking now. Consistency and longevity. No player has played 100 tests for Pakistan in recent times after Younis Khan and the list is also quite short for Pakistan. Alarming.

Interesting stat. I wondering how long on an average ir takes a player from each country to reach the 100 tests milestone?
It sure how many tests Pakistan plays in a year. I have a feeling it is less than other countries. So by design, Pakistan cricketer careers are not long enough to reach this milestone.

You are right here. Pakistan is not playing enough Test matches for the players to reach this milestone. Azhar Ali could have been the latest entry to the 100-Test club but he retired on 97 matches.

How did Imran not play 100 tests despite being around for almost two decades? Gavaskar - his contemporary - played 40 tests more!

PAK should utilize the 3 months of IPL to play 5-6 Tests against SRL , BD & AFG - home or away !

The heading needs correction since Pakistan has more cricketers with 100 tests than BD, Zim, Afg, Ire; 4 sides which also have a test status.

Pakistan play fewer tests compared to big 3.
Pakistani superstars have historically been bowlers, in general it’s easier for a batsmen to achieve longevity than a bowler.
Off the field politics/indulging in bad practices/poor attitude is also a common trait in Pakistani players which cause careers to end prematurely.

Pace bowling all rounder, I think he would have rested more often/been injured more than a contemporary batsmen.

All of these sides are newer when compared to Pakistan which got its test status in 50s while Bangladesh got its test status in 2000. Lots and lots of difference. afg and Ireland is not even in this debate atm.

BD, Zimbabwe, Afg, Ireland weren't even around when Pakistan started playing test cricket.

It is not a very important metric. Azhar Ali played 97 Tests but in terms of output and skill, he was a max 50-60 Test player.

Shafiq is another player who played 77 Tests but wasn’t more than a 35-40 Test player.

You would expect Babar to surely get there and he is obviously deserves to. He has played 52 Tests and has another 6/7 years left.

PCB should first chuck out this 2 test series nonsense. And against teams like England and Australia they must push for 4 test series. Pakistan-England is a great rivalry, deserves 4 or 5 tests.

I would rather they use the tests they have better. Need more in the 200+ wickets and 7000+ runs category

Then it should be mentioned that they have least cricketers with 100 tests among traditional 8 test nations.

Khan started his career along with Gavaskar but I think he wasn’t good enough at that age and for the next 3 -4 years he was out of side.
He came back as a completely different cricketer and then continued playing for Pakistan for next 15 years.

He also skipped some tours.

with such fitness levels if they are able to play 50 Tests its nothing less than a miracle.

3 Reasons,

  1. Most players being 3-4 years olders than their stated age makes the decline come much earlier than 100 tests.
  2. It's easier for batsmen or bowlers to get to 100 tests. Pakistan has been light on producing gun batsmen and spinners.
  3. Pakistan playing less tests makes it harder even without reason 1 or 2.
Babar should get to 100 tests mark. He is good enough and a batsman.

Lots of players from Pakistan were just not good enough to reach that mark. They declined and eventually got dropped never to be picked again. Azhar Ali could have pushed to 100 Tests but not sure what the situation was and if he even had that option. Also I agree Pakistan play the least amount of Tests. For example in the last 10 years they have played 78 Tests while the big 3 has played more than 100 Tests. The only teams below Pakistan in number of Tests in that period is Bangladesh, Zimbabwe Afghanistan & Ireland. Even WI played 80 Tests in that period, SL has 91 Tests as well. So something for PCB to think about. Also not many Pakistan players last a decade. Babar might be one who might make it to 100 Tests from this pack. Don't think anyone else looks like reaching that milestone.

Pertinent stat is lack of 200 wicket club members from Pakistan
7 overall in 200+ wickets club from Pakistan and funnily enough 4 of them are spinners for a country which takes pride on the pace resources they possess. Only 3 pacers in that list and the last of them retired 21 years ago. Since Waqar last played Test in January of 2003, Pakistan has played 164 Tests with none of their pacers managing to get to 200 Test wickets. While lots of hype was created for each one of them who played during that time, none managed to even have a decent career except for Asif and now Shaheen. Shoaib Akthar took 178 wickets but he debuted in 1999.

Even a player like Bairstow will be playing his 100th test match and no one from Pakistan has been able to do so in recent times... Kane will also be playing his 100th game.
