Pakistan is possibly out of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 due to one man’s meltdown

If Imad wasim was playing instead of Mohammad Nawaz, pakistan would have won both games v ind/zim ( or atleast 1 game) imad got team over the line v afghanistan few years ago. Was mentally better than nawaz any given day.

Nawaz has won a game for Pakistan against India. Imad won that game against Afghanistan where he was the beneficary of a plumb LBW not given and a dropped catch. Imad cannot play the short ball to save his life and would have been a sitting duck on that Perth wicket.

Pakistan is possibly out of the ICC T20 World Cup 2022 due to one man’s meltdown

So, this is going to sound extremely harsh and inhumane, but I can´t help but agree with the sentiment of this thread - to a certain degree, at least. Actually, the first person who brought my attention to the fact that Nawaz panicked and goofed up twice was my cousin´s husband who mentioned it only yesterday and, whilst it sounded like an interesting thought to me, then I saw this thread pop up on my screen whilst browsing through the forum.

Well, instead of putting the whole blame on one man - which is an extremely harsh thing to do - I would just say that, had Nawaz held his nerves and seen the team through twice in a row, all of Pakistan´s faults and flaws would´ve been covered by it, and the same team would´ve been hailed as great by the media, experts, and the fans. However, on the contrary, he ended up panicking in most crucial phases of the two matches. I know that he was given the last over, and maybe 16 was a little less for him to defend, given the fact that he had, by then, proven to be a soft target for the Indian batsmen, but we must remember that 13 were required off just three deliveries at one stage, and that´s when the meltdown happened. Then in the match against Zimbabwe, three off three should´ve been chased down, as Wasim Junior had made his job much easier by hitting that much required boundary in the last over, but a dot ball happened, and then he panicked immediately and got out off the very next ball, trying to go for a boundary.

It´s sad for him, actually, if you ask me. These two occasions will haunt him in his thought process for a while and that´s not a good thing. He´s a lower-order hitter and will be faced with such situations multiple times even in the future - this is certain to happen - and him having such a bitter past experience of such a close encounter (of a one-run loss) won´t help him stay in the moment in the future, when faced with a similar situation again. As for his bowling, I remember him defending almost run-a-ball or perhaps even less for Quetta in an absolute nail-biter of a Qualifier in PSL 2016, and Quetta would often turn to him in similar situation. So, I´m a little surprised that he didn´t handle the situation better a couple of times recently: in the ongoing T20 World Cup and in the Asia Cup T20 some time ago.

Still, though, we must, absolutely must, bear in mind that two of Pakistan´s most iconic wins this year - the one against India in September and then in the Final of the tri-series in New Zealand - came with massive help from Nawaz. So, he has given the fans some really good memories as well this particular year. I still maintain hope in his all-round abilities. Go, Nawaz, go - and I don´t mean the opposite of what I´ve just meant, the other being a famous political slogan in our country. :msd

Has to be a collective failure.

Poor coaching, poor selection, poor tactics, poor leadership, poor approach and several players struggling and out of form.

I'm just surprised that some people are surprised that Pakistan is going to be knocked out in the group stages.

Just pick the players who are performing...we're not looking for 50s from anyone. Just bit of combined dash.

The line up against Netherlands was perfect based on form.

Pity the batters, Asif, Haider and Khushdil who aren't even good enough to last a few overs.

We are a batter short.

I think Nawaz should be blamed for the Zimbabwe game he should definitely have finished the game.

Definitely. We need to stop with the whole "we lose as a team" in every situation and just call a spade a spade here.

It was a casse of wrong man at the wrong place. You can't really pin it on one person just because he happened to be in thick of things when the loss happened.

Yes nawaz melted under pressure in both games You could see he couldnt handle the occasion

But hes a symptom of the larger malaise in the team and how pakistans players have very little quality, game awareness or ability to handle their nerves

The pace, bounce of the Perth Wicket played a role in our defeat against Zimbabwe. Any other wicket, Nawaz and Wasim Jr would have seen us home.

I pointed out to my brother that nawaz messed up twice in two games jist a few days ago, but by NO means is he responsible for either loss all by himself, for reasons others have posted about int his thread.

His performance in the Asia Cup and also in the series in NZ right before the WC has bought him enough match winning goodwill for me that he desrves to be in this team moving forward.

That is the way luck works. He was unlucky twice but he is also critical cog in Pak team. He has stepped up in big way with bat in last few months to cover up for the non performing batters.
And with ball we anyway know his skill level is good

Luck would be Kohli getting dropped by a fielder on the 3rd ball and the ball somehow going for six. Bowling a beamer, getting hit for six, then proceed to bowl wides is not bad luck. He just forgot how to bowl in that moment.

Similarly, failing to score 3 runs off 3 balls is bad luck? He missed one ball and he panicked.

Tremendous meltdown. The difference between 6 points and the 2 we have now, quite clearly.

I am hesitant to blame one man for losses. We could have won both matches well before the last over. It’s our foolish captain’s fault we took the india match to the last over.

It’s our foolish middle order and our cowardly openers that took a simple chase of 130 against a minnow that now even Netherlands beat to the final over.

However, once it went to the final over, Nawaz made some criminal and unforgivable errors.

Vs India - Bowling 2 wides and a no ball (almost 2 no balls!). He even got 2 damn wickets! If someone told you before the final over when the target is 16 that the bowling side would get 2 wickets and only 1 six, there is only one winner and that’s the bowling side! Criminal

Vs Zimbabwe - 3 off 3 required. 3 off 3 as long as you don’t get out, you can even run one off a play and miss of each ball. If you get an unplayable delivery like an inswinging yorker, ok fair enough. But he holes out to the deep. Criminal

On one hand we've Kohli doing half the job of the umpires, helping them signal wide-balls and no-bal

On one hand we've Kohli doing half the job of the umpires, helping them signal wide-balls and no-balls:)), and on one hand we've got Pakistan's Nawaz who walked off against South Africa, assuming that he was run-out, although it was a dead-ball once the umpire (wrongly) gave him out LBW. It was very odd on his part. Pakistan must teach their players such fine lines of the rules of the game. Even I knew it straight away watching it from the TV that it was a dead-ball, why didn't Nawaz know about it? So, the players must show more game awareness in such situations. I'm not singling out Nawaz here for anything, as I otherwise think that it was a good innings by him. It was him and Iftikhar who led Pakistan's recovery after a horrible start, before Shadab came in and completely took away the game from the opposition. So, it was a valuable little cameo by him, once again underlining his value to this team.

On any other wicket, chasing a mere target of 131 against Zimbabwe, Nawaz and Wasim would've never been required in the first place, I suppose! So, whereas the general point stands, I admit that, but my post revolved more around the point that only three off three were required at one stage when the chase was goofed up again from where the match should've been won easily, in my opinion. :)

Nawaz bowling like seamer was due to the fact Pandya was on strike. If Nawaz bowled spin to Pandya game would ahve been over in 3 balls.
