What's new

Pakistan name 20-player ODI squad for the 3-match home series against New Zealand

I think that is more T20's from ODI's. He deserves a legitimate run considering his very impressive ODI & List A results so far.

Frankly speaking, all of our bowlers are pretty leaky including Hasan Ali, Rauf & Hasnain. You need as many game changing bowlers as you can and I'd say Usman Khan has shown he can be one of those types.

Sinwari has performed against a formidable SA side, but can't say i rate him honestly.

Tbh I wish Shinwari would play QEA. He has good FC stats and a handy batsmen. Would be a perfect replacement for Abbas. However he was a clown and skipped last season to play LPL.

He's 22 years old. He needs some time to develop plus coaching. No one is saying he's the greatest - but he clearly has skills that can be honed into something good. Specially since he is a Leg Spinners. Leg Spinners take a while to develop.

This is why Pakistan struggles - if someone isn't a world beater - lets discard him and he's a "tried, tested, failure".

Averaging 32 in ODIs is NOT a bad average at all especially for an AR. Friggin Ashwin and Vettori have similar Averages.

Pakistani bowlers with worse averages than him in the last 10 years:
Muhammad Amir
Umar Gul
Imad Wasim
Rumman Raees
Wahab Riaz
Hafeez
Faheem
Tanvir
And on and on
Shahid Afridi

I'll pull the stats up later but Shadab has mostly feasted vs. Minnows and that's where a lot of his wickets were taken. Vettori played on flat NZ pitches w/ no assitance for spin, and Ashwin was played against high quality opposition usually.

I've got a few prospects i'd try as an alternate but think Abbas will be retained for a passable performance he had.

- Irfanullah
- Dahani
- Junaid Khan (wish he comes back)
- Waqas Maqsood

I wouldn't wanna mess about with the test team right now, other than dropping Abid Ali I'm not keen on too many changes for the test team.

Since Misbah came in , both top order and middle order getting badly exposed.

When MA was there atleast the top order did the bulk of scoring , now they are struggling to reach 200

Rizwan @ 4 shows how much they rely on him to score runs but he plays like a normal wicket keeper

Rizwan is not an ODI number 4. was exposed in South Africa and England. He is a number 5 or a number 6. after all he is a Keeper Batsman.

All the ODI batsmen I have seen, either Saud Shakeel ( I need to see more of him to give an opinion) or Fawad Alam should be the number 4 batsman.

Being a Fawad fan i think maybe his ODI days are gone rather he just stick to tests.

So the core group of players is:

Imam
Fakhar
Babar
Rizwan
Hasan Ali
Shaheen
Shadab
Imad/Faheem

I can already see the problem, one power hitter among them, and too loaded with bowling.

Why hasn't Pakistan developed middle order hitters?

Also, whatever happened to Usman Khan?

Fawad Alam seriously, he can sta6 in the tests for now, that should be enough.

When every single team tries out young players , Pak cannot go back and bring a 35 yr old for comeback but they do those stupid stunts. Pak on a whole doesn’t plan anything long term

Having said all that , under Misbah I don’t expect any youngster to excel to the next level or even reach the expectations. Because Misbah is there to shatter and destroy any budding youngster career, he is tailor made for that.

That’s true Rizwan is not ODI no.4 , but it will take Misbah 10 straight failures plus 5 straight single digit scores to move him down to 5 and play Saud Shakeel above him.

His cricketing brain is so stubborn and pathetic

As I said earlier in another thread where a bunch of white ball cricketers were called for training

Pakistan middle order have serious issues their tail starts after Babar from no.4 onwards

This stupid Wasim has selected a number of bits and pieces instead of proper batsman in 20 man lineup

Only in the home series they need to try new middle order batsman not TTFs like Ifthikar and khusdil

He has a bunch of 5 players to try at no.4 and 5 and keeps rotating them , I thot really high of this guy Wasim but looks to me like he is just another Sallu and Iqbal Qasim

Let me tell u here ,when Ifthikar and khusdil fail he will bring back the group “ Asif ali, danish aziz, azam khan, Maqsood “

Personally I think we're chopping and changing too much. We don't have any great talent in middle order, but got to make the best out of what we have.

I think we should forget about international average, should stick with the middle order bats who are consistently striking at a high SR. Guys who can score fairly easily from ball one, given our slightly slower, reliable top order is going to put them in that position 9/10 times. We just have to trust their PSL averages/performances (which should be the main factor, it's the only limited overs domestic with high pressure, good level bowling). There is no point playing potentially better, but slower SR batsmen who don't fit this team right now.

Really that would leave Asif Ali, Haider Ali and Iftikhar Ahmed who I'd just keep playing for now. Guys who have performed at PSL, and shown ability to score at high SR in internationals. They aren't amazing, but I think the best we have so far until someone new establishes himself through PSL and domestic. Maybe if we show faith in these guys, they can string some performances together instead of being constantly dropped and recalled.

Of course for no.7 position Imad should be there no question, he's far above the rest there.

Imad continues to be snubbed despite being the best and only proper all-rounder in the team. Shocking to say the least.

Pak need to experiment in thid series. use part timers such as saud, ifti and khushdil.

i would play this 11.

Fahkar
Imam
Babar
Iftikar
Saud
Rizwan
Khushdil / Shadab
Hasan
Wasim Jr
Nawaz
Shaheen

I agree. Thing is when you are struggling to find a quality player for a certain position than the best chance you have is to give a long run to the best one out of the lot (Based upon numbers and impact in domestic cricket ) in the hope that by playing regularly at the top level the guy would be able to improve atleast upto a certain standard.

If you find some impressive talent in the meanwhile good enough otherwise you would still be in a better position than chopping and changing every other series.

How many series will Abdullah Shafiq get without playing a game. It must be some sort of record!

Asif Ali lol he has deceived many with his gully mohalla batting.. Its a shame to play him in international cricket.. I would even recall Shoaib malik to come back from retirement to play instead of playing Asif Ali

That is not the right solution.

Also chopping and changing is not the right solution too.

Play proper batsman like Haider Ali , Abdullah Shafiq, Saud shakeel in the middle order.

If they need experienced players then go should go for Haris Sohail, Umar Amin, Maqsood and Sarfraz Ahmed

Agha Salman? Dropped with getting a game
95% Perfect squad
I would have only 1 change Agha in place of ifti

95% Perfect squad

Seriously lol..

Three leg spinners in Shadab Khan , zahid mehmood and usman qadir in the squad

Middle order is an area that is struggling , he still goes for bits and pieces players to fill that up with Ifthikar and Khusdhil shah.. I cant see them as middle order options lol..

Only Babar and Saud Shakeel are the middle order batsmen in the 20 man squad that too both of them are top order batsman.

Haris a good selection.

Two fast bowling allrounders in Wasim jnr and faheem ashraf, playing in Pak , dont know why.

Five fast bowlers to play in Pak lol

Shaheen, dahani, hasan ali, hasnain and rauf

11 players to play and 9 players to be in the bench is an overkill...

I dont know what is he thinking about selecting a squad..

There is no right arm spinner and proper left arm spinner in the line up, but he keeps selecting bits and pieces in ifthikar, khushdil, nawaz, shadab lol..

Nothing to get excited about with this squad, exposes the lack of talent coming through.

We're a mediocre side sitting at 6 in the rankings with Bangladesh putting pressure on us and West Indies, Sri Lanka not too far behind. We could end up sliding further down the rankings.

Expecting it to be hard work even against NZ B.

Guess you already know the answer. Playing your pals and connections is more important than any long term development, planning and merit. This is how Pak cricket works.

I like Imad at 7, Shada at 8 in UAE conditions. I don't think faheem brings anything to the table Pak don't already have covered in any of their main line bowlers.

But from what I've seen hasn't Asif Ali been given enough chances? And if you want to go off of PSL then what about Maqsood?

Exactly mediocre side , it was always Babar or burst this team.

Tail starts with no.4 and they don’t care about it.
In bowling , no world class spinners

They are deservingly placed at 6 and expect to slide down further especially under Misbah.

I wanted Maqsood back years ago when people said he was washed up. But now, he's a bit too old, he's 34. Taken too long to come to the forefront of selection again. Even if he cements a place in the team now, he'll play a year or two and then finished. Nothing wrong with playing older players, but it usually isn't a great investment to play older players who haven't even proven they can do it at international level yet.

Asif Ali's overall SR in PSLs is 164. Which is by far the best out of Pakistani batsmen. Maqsood's is 132. Already said how he is technically one of the most impactful in the world in terms of domestic T20. Asif Ali's SR in internationals is also higher while Maqsood's isn't. Him being 5 years younger than Maqsood to, might tilt things a little in his favour.

Why Haider Ali is probably our best bet, young, performance in domestic and in PSL, with ability to score fast. Only put Iftikhar in the conversation too, because technically out of all of the ones we've tried, he's the only one to command a decent T20 SR and average and he's hardly had chances in ODIs. As international performance trumps any sort of PSL stats.

The coronavirus tests of the Pakistan national ODI team will start from Sunday, reported 24NewsHD TV channel on Saturday.

Pakistan-New Zealand ODI series will take off with an ODI match on September 13 in Rawalpindi.

Players and team management members will undergo corona tests in their respective cities.

Squad members have been instructed to stay at home after corona testing.

The second corona test will be held one day after the team gathers in Islamabad on September 8.

The camp against New Zealand will start on September 10.

The New Zealand team will reach Islamabad on the night between September 11 and 12. It is pertinent to note that the Pak-New Zealand series will be hosted by Rawalpindi in three ODIs and five T20 matches in Lahore.

From what we can see Asif Ali is not cut for international cricket.
If he scores in domestic and PSL only, then he know how to score runs against his own countrymen
Looks like batsman who cannot put bat on ball , seen him get out at the mid on region like billion times
He comes in , same delivery , same shot , caught at mid on and out.. just 2 balls and done. :ds
He is simply a nothing batsman, who cant bowl and field too, no. of dropped catches, And it boils to see him field in slips cordon lol.. :asad1

Asif Ali even if his SR is 250+ wouldnt select him not because of personal bias or whatever that can be said against, just simply because he will fail facing against any intl bowler who is not a pakistani.
