Police in northwestern Pakistan have launched a manhunt for suspects, including a Muslim professor, accused of killing a colleague from the minority Ahmadiyya sect following arguments on religion, officials said.

On Monday, two men in Peshawar city shot dead Naeemuddin Khattak, who held a doctorate in zoology and was a teacher at a college, police officer Ashoor Khan told the dpa news agency on Tuesday.

Khattak’s brother told police a Muslim professor from another college with whom the 56-year-old victim had heated arguments on religion shot him, Khan said.

“We are raiding possible hideouts to arrest the suspect,” the police officer said.

The incident occurred two months after a Pakistani-American man who belonged to the Ahmadiyya sect was shot dead inside a court during his trial under Pakistan’s blasphemy law.

The US State Department criticised the killing, urging Pakistan to repeal such laws to prevent crimes triggered by religious hatred.

Pakistan’s four million-strong Ahmadiyya group has faced death, intimidation and a sustained hate campaign for decades.

Ahmadis insist they follow Islam. However, Pakistan declared the group non-Muslim in 1974 for regarding their sect’s founder, Ghulam Ahmad, as a prophet. Orthodox Islam holds Muhammad was its last prophet.

More than 260 members of the sect have been killed in gun or bomb attacks since 1984 when the sectarian violence started in Pakistan, according to statistics compiled by the community.

Every day we fail to protect our minorities yet we routinely point fingers at other countries where things are much better for minorities.

Let's hope IK and PTI show leadership by condemning this brutal act of extremism.

'Close relative' arrested in killing of Ahmadi professor in Peshawar

Peshawar police on Tuesday claimed to have arrested a man who, along with an accomplice, allegedly shot dead a professor belonging to the Ahmadi community in the city a day earlier.

Dr Naeemuddin Khattak, a zoology professor at Superior Science College on the outskirts of Peshawar, was going home when two men riding a motorcycle opened fire on his car in the Wazir Bagh area. He died on the spot.

The arrested suspect, identified as Mubasir, is a "close relative" of the deceased, a Peshawar police statement said.

On Monday, police had registered a case against Mubasir and a fellow academic of Khattak, Saad Farooq, for allegedly being involved in the murder.

The two suspects were directly named in the first information report (FIR) by Khattak's family. They reportedly had a heated argument with the slain professor over a religious issue a day before his murder.

Moharrar Ashoor Khan at Bhana Mari police station, in whose jurisdiction the killing took place, told Dawn.com that a police team raided a house in Lala Rukh Colony in Syed Hassan Pir area and arrested Mubasir.

He said the other suspect, Farooq, a lecturer at the University of Agriculture, Peshawar, was at large. Khan added that police were investigating the case and hoped that the second suspect would be arrested soon.

According to the police official, initial investigation suggested that the professor was killed over his religious beliefs.

The deceased's body was handed over to his family after postmortem and he was subsequently laid to rest.

Suspect Mubasir was still being questioned, police official Ayaz Khan told the Associated Press. He will be presented before a judicial magistrate on Wednesday for obtaining his physical remand, the moharrar said.

This was the third murder of a member of the Ahmadi community in Peshawar since July 29, when Tahir Naseem, an American national, was shot dead by a teenager in a court. On August 12, Meraj Ahmed, an Ahmadi trader, was shot dead by attackers in the Gulbahar area.

On September 10, a mob besieged the residence of an Ahmadi in the Phandu area of the city and the family was rescued by police. However, one of the family members was arrested and charged with blasphemy.

Fake liberals were out in force to put Pakistan down:) They need to do research into Ahmedis too as they internally have many issues including violence.

Extremism? his own relative is the accused. Is there any indication of this being a hate crime?

Let's not act like there isn't a problem with how minorities are treated. Ahmedis can't even call themselves Muslims and are commonly referred to by a pejorative.

Imran Khan, Pakistan and Muslim Ummah is to be blamed when Ahmedis kill each other as well, as per our moom batti brigade desi liberals.

There is indeed a problem but fake liberals need to make constructive criticism with full facts.

Fair enough.

However, why do Pakistanis (living in Pakistan) always use 'liberal' as an insult? Is it because Pakistan is a conservative society?

This is Ahmedi on ahmedi crime . Can’t be called hate crime.
Whats a flake liberal? Is there a fake conservative?

You are right about our dismal treatment of minorities, however in this guess everyone jumped the gun - perhaps?

Oh I certainly agree. I suppose the jumping of the gun suggests there is some progress, as people seemed to care, but it's a net-negative, of course.

Interesting that only the relative, who is likely also Ahmadi, has been arrested so far. The other is still at large. Hope he gets caught or questions will be asked.

I dont live in Pakistan but I can see that these liberals are fake because I have the exposure to compare them with western liberals. Pakistani liberals are just anti nationals who thrive on adversity.

Exactly Pakistan doesn't have liberals we have people who think only their opinion is correct which is Infact the exact opposite of liberalism and more like a right wing nutter

Has IK supported the killing of Ahmedis or any minority?

It seems to me that being progressive, or at least not conservative leads to being called a 'fake liberal'. Quite telling, I think.

Progressive in what sense? I am progressive and not conservative but please do not group me with Fake Pakistani liberals. Generally, they are just have self hatred, are corrupt, selfish and won't back down from even supporting extreme maulvis if they have to. This is not being a liberal.
