Saud Shakeel to captain Pakistan Shaheens against MCC

Lahore, 28 January 2020:

Pakistan Cricket Board has rewarded batsman Saud Shakeel for leading Pakistan to 50-over ACC Emerging Teams Asia Cup 2019 title by naming him as captain for the one-off 50-over fixture against the Marylebone Cricket Club. The tour schedule will be announced in due course but the MCC team will visit Lahore from 13 to 19 February.

The 24-year-old Saud is one of the 11 players who have been retained from the side that defeated Bangladesh by 77 runs in the tournament final in Dhaka in November 2019. The other 10 are Akif Javed, Haider Ali, Hasan Mohsin, Imran Rafiq, Mohammad Mohsin, Omair Bin Yousuf, Rohail Nazir, Saif Badar, Sameen Gul and Umar Khan.

Zeeshan Malik is the only new face in the 12-player squad. The 23-year-old scored 780 runs in the just-concluded Quaid-e-Azam Trophy first-class tournament at an average of 52.

Amad Butt, Khushdil Shah and Mohammad Hasnain, who were also members of the side that won in Dhaka, were not considered as they have already graduated to the senior team set-up.

Nadeem Khan, coordinator – selection committee, said: “We have followed the policy of consistency and rewarding players for achieving success in Dhaka. There is only one change in the and that is of young Zeeshan Malik, who performed well in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, the last tournament of the 2019-20 domestic season to date.”

PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan said: “I can’t emphasise enough on the importance of the MCC’s tour to Pakistan, which will be their first in 48 years. The fact that the MCC side will be led by their president and one of the most respected cricketers, Kumar Sangakkara, reflects how the world’s oldest and most influential clubs, who are also the Guardians of the Laws of Cricket, are viewing this tour.

“The MCC’s tour of Pakistan is part of our sincere efforts and endeavours to resume regular and normal international cricket activities. Sri Lanka played a full series, while Bangladesh have just completed white-ball matches and are scheduled to return for the two Tests and an ODI. Similarly, recent visits by Cricket Australia, England and Wales Cricket Board, Cricket Ireland and the International Cricket Council officials are a testament of our untiring efforts.”

Meanwhile, Northern coach Mohammad Wasim has also announced his 12-player side for the twenty20 match.

The side will be captained by Pakistan U19 captain Rohail Nazir and also includes Ali Imran, Haider Ali and Zaid Alam, who were members of the 15-player Northern side which defeated Balochistan by 52 runs in the final of the National T20 Cup.

Apart from the 50-over and 20-over matches against the PCB-selected sides, MCC will also play two 20-over matches against Lahore Qalandars and Multan Sultans. These matches will be part of the two teams’ warm-up matches ahead of the HBL Pakistan Super Leagues 2020. The remaining four franchisees will be in Karachi during this period and will play their practice matches in the metropolitan city where the tournament opener will be played on 20 February.

Anyone who complains in this thread about the squad selection is clearly part of the ship that always complains for the sake of it.

Seriously, this is a very good squad. Can’t fault any selection.
 
A tour to England and New Zealand this year would be welcomed. Wasim Khan has the contacts to make it happen
 
Great squad, going on domestic records and suggestions from pp posters. Fully agree with [MENTION=130419]shah_1[/MENTION] that the A team needs more exposure in SENA tours. I remember there being a Wasim Khan comment prior to the Australia series to engage in more bilateral A team cricket. I think if the NZ A team and the England Lions are not touring during Pakistan's tours there, maybe the Shaheens can visit at the same time. If you guys recall, the last time the A team toured England in 2015 (the same time as the Misbah push up series) that team gave us Babar Azam and Hassan Ali. Thus it would be very interesting to see how these guys do on English pitches, especially against the Lions.

Also guys, it's a small thing, but no less interesting that they've essentially rebranded the A team as the Shaheens, similar to England Lions. This gives it more prestige and makes the A team a brand in itself. Also nice to see the Shaheens being wholly composed of new players rather than failed international players. Again, progress under this new PCB administration.
 
Good initiative we finally can test our fringe players in proper matches rather than the drivel being served as first class cricket at the moment. Don't get me wrong the system is improving but the quality is still lacking.
 
Good squads. Excited to see Sameen Gul in there, good opportunity for him to get his name on the squad for the England tour.

Only 2? Akif and Sameen.

Also, would have liked a leggie in Usama Mir. And Abdullah Shafique over Omair Bin Yousuf.
 
Why they ignore Mohammad Haris? This guy has a faster strike rate?

*Northern U 19. As Haider and Rohail are obviously there too.
 
Abdullah shafique really should be there and no Zafar gohar ahead of umer is an abomination. Zafar was THE best spinner in the recently concluded QEA season. What more does he have to do To be considered for national team selection?!?!?!? My only thought process is that he’s already being lined for the bangla test matches hence why he’s not been selected here but I’m not holding my breath. He’s quickly becoming the fawad alam of bowlers. If he’s not in the test squad for Bangladesh we riot.
 
Also can’t wait to see zeeshan Malik in action. He’s finally got the chance he so richly deserves. Imo after the ‘big’ names currently lining up in our national side he’s THE most complete batsmen in domestic cricket. I think he could be a revelation for us in test cricket especially. Him, Abdullah and saif are the future. Saud for me is vastly overrated. 24 now and done nothing of note and his fitness is poor. Rock on zeeshan, really hope he makes a big impression and makes the test team.

I really like Zafar but he bowled 8 overs for 88 runs in national T20 cup with 1 wicket. While Umer Khan just played 1 match with 4 overs 1/29 and was also part of the emerging cup squad and Nadeem Khan has mentioned that they wanted to continue with same group of players.

Zafar is really good talent all around but he hasnt been in best of the forms and rythem with white ball. He is under the radar but needs a breakthrough tournament performance, it can either be PSL (Depending upon opportunities) and national one day cup.

For national selection one needs to stand up when selectors are looking for a player like you, post missing his flight and then injury he has been lacking a breakthrough white ball season. In tests I would definitely have him over Bilal Asif without a doubt.

Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) has today announced that Sir Alastair Cook and Ricky Skerritt have been appointed to the Club’s World Cricket committee.

Cook and Skerritt have accepted the Club’s invitation to join the committee, which meets twice a year to discuss the most important issues in the game and acts as an independent voice in world cricket.

Cook, England’s leading Test Match run-scorer with 12,472 runs in his 161 matches, retired from the international game in 2018, scoring a century in his final Test against India at the Oval.

He has since continued his domestic career, helping his county side Essex to a second County Championship title in three years.

Cook has also combined his county duties with a burgeoning media career which has seen him commentate on BBC’s Test Match Special.

Skerritt became President of Cricket West Indies in March 2019, succeeding Dave Cameron who had held the post for six years.

He is a former Minister of Tourism, International Transport, International Trade, Industry, Commerce and Sport for his native Saint Kitts and Nevis, having held several portfolios in the country’s ministry between 2004 and 2014.

His previous involvement with Cricket West Indies was as their first Senior Team Manager, prior to his political career.

Former West Indies bowler and current broadcaster Ian Bishop, and Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib al Hasan have stood down from the committee.

Mike Gatting, Chairman of the MCC World Cricket committee, said: “I am thrilled that Sir Alastair and Ricky have both accepted our invitation to join the MCC World Cricket committee.

“Alastair has enjoyed a wonderful career with England over a number of years and with him still playing domestically, he can give insight from a current players’ perspective, as well using his undisputable international experience.

“We have been keen for some time to appoint a new representative from the West Indies and I am delighted that Ricky will be joining us. His knowledge of the game from a West Indian perspective will be invaluable, and his work outside of the sport will also be advantageous to the committee.”

The next MCC World Cricket committee meeting is due to take place in Sri Lanka in March, timed to coincide with England’s two ICC World Test Championship matches, as well as the MCC County Champion Match, which will take place between 24th and 27th March at the Galle International Stadium.

Having met in Bengaluru in March and at Lord’s in August of 2019, the MCC World Cricket committee has unanimously backed the inclusion of women’s cricket at the Commonwealth Games in Birmingham in 2022, supported a positive future for Test cricket after reviewing the results of the MCC survey on the subject, and closely monitored the balance between bat and ball in recent months.

You are correct. Sameen Gul and Akif Javed will be the main seamers while Umer Khan and Mohammad Moshin will be spinners supported by Hassan Mohsin's seam bowling along with Shakeel's and Badar's SLA and leg spin respectively.

Its an exhibition match so I guess management wanted to experiment a bit.

Didn't realise that Saif bowled Legspin. How would you rate it in a t20 context. Is he a dependable enough guy to bowl a couple of overs?

I think Shaheens team who Badar is part of is playing the 50 overs fixture vs MCC. In 50 overs he can be used for a few overs. Talking about future In T20 context he wont be much dependable as in T20s unless a side is totally belted around, captain rarely goes for a part time option and that too a leg spinner which is a difficult are to control even for specialist spinners.

He does have decent skills as leggy, bowled 0/36, 2/57, 2/27(In Final vs BD) in recent emerging asia cup. However, its his batting ability which is rated highly in the circles though still he can be a useful 6th option in 50 overs cricket if he keeps on working on this skill as well.
 
Really happy for Zeeshan, he's the 2nd best batting talent in the country after Babar; about time he gets some recognition.

If Omair Yusuf gets a game and stays on the wicket for sometime, he is a treat to watch. After a long time people would see some strokeplay of the 90s Pakistan team.

PCB had prepared a pathetic pitch in Qaddafi stadium hope they learn their lesson and make a sporting pitch which encourages stroke play and has some bounce.

I know Omair Yousuf is a treat to watch, but he's a treat to watch after about 50 balls, when its too late

He is far too slow for this format.

Abdullah Shafique is much much better. World class batsman.

Yousuf's strike rate is higher in shorter format.

He plays 4 day cricket a lot which is advantageous for the team.
Babar Azam also had a very low strike rate in domestics before he was inducted. Imam and Azam have made 100s with a 60 strike rate in places like Sharjah. Yousuf has a strong shot making ability, he'll do well once given a chance.
 
Saud Shakeel could be a potential test batsman but he is not a limited over player. What I saw of him he can;t hit beyond thirty yard circle and plays with a poor strike rate.
 
I really like this squad. Filled with talented young players with great potential. What I will say is that they probably could have used another or two pacers in the team. They look light on pacers.

Ehsan Adil, Mohammad Asghar called for MCC one-dayer

Lahore, 12 February 2020:

Five changes have been made in the Pakistan Shaheens’ line-up for a 50-over contest against Marylebone Cricket Club (MCC) at Aitchison College on 16 February after HBL PSL franchises called-up players for the preparations in the lead up to the tournament.

Ehsan Adil, Imran Butt, Mohammad Irfan Khan, Mohammad Asghar and Sajid Khan will replace Akif Javed, Haider Ali, Mohammad Mohsin, Saif Badar and Umar Khan respectively in the 12-player squad which will be captained by Saud Shakeel.

The replacements have been made on the basis of performances in the domestic events with an aim of providing exposure and opportunities to top performers of the domestic events.

Pacer Ehsan Adil took 18 wickets in nine first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2019-20 matches at an average of 32.67 for Central Punjab, the eventual winners of the tournament.

With 934 runs in nine matches, 24-year-old Imran Butt was the highest run getter in the same tournament.

Mohammad Irfan Khan, a 17-year-old batsman, has been in the Pakistan U19 set-up since Pakistan’s tour of South Africa in June last year. He donned the national colours in the ACC U19 Asia Cup in September 2019 and during the recently-concluded ICC U19 Cricket World Cup in South Africa. In the domestic circuit, the right-hander made 475 runs in 10 three-day non first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy contests at an average of 47.50.

For their outstanding run with the ball in the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, 21-year-old Mohammad Asghar (27 wickets in eight matches) and 26-year-old Sajid Khan (25 wickets in six matches) have also been drafted in the 12-member line-up. Asghar and Sajid, the two spinners, were at the fourth and fifth spots in the list of highest wicket-takers that tournament.

Meanwhile, Northern, who play a T20 match against the MCC at the same venue on 17 February, have also made a change in their line-up for similar reasons. Musa Khan, who graduated to the highest level by making his Test debut Down Under in Novermber last year, has been replaced with Munir Riaz, who took 14 wickets in six matches in the National U19 Three-Day Tournament 2019-20.

Bro, the other 5 lads were called up by their PSL franchises and will probably benefit more from rubbing shoulders with the better calibre of coaching staff and foreign players as opposed to playing for the Shaheens. This included Mohammed Mohsin and Akif Javed.

Now, my knowledge of the replacements is limited, but weren't you quite excited about Sajid Khan's abiolity as an offie? Plus, Irfan Khan is Irfan Khan Niazi from the U19, who you also rate. Plus Ehsan Adil as also a possible Test Pick I feel...

In Pakistani cricket your stock goes through the roof the longer you sit in on the bench. Players like the Akmal Brother, Ahmed Shehzad and Fawad Alam are proof of this. I myself am a fan of FDawad Alam and think he has been treated unfairly - however, the fact that some fans have built him up as if he is Viv Richards in disguise is comical.

Therefore it is no surprise that PPers are over the moon that a squad has been selected of players who have no international experience & they know very little about.

Don't get me wrong - I think the squads are perfect for the occasion and these sort of matches. However, the "grass is always greener on the other side" mentality of some of the fans makes me laugh.
 
Pretty disappointing. What exactly has Ehsan Adil done recently to get picked? Similarly Asghar's QeA numbers weren't impressive either. On the contrary Imran Butt and Sajid are good picks but wish they had retained Mohsin, Akif and Haider and picked Abdullah Shafique.

Former Test batsman Ijaz Ahmed has been appointed as the head coach of the Pakistan U19 cricket team on a three-year contract, the Pakistan Cricket Board announced today.

Ijaz has been in coaching since 2009, serving as the head coach for Pakistan “A” and U19 sides. He also took up the head coach’s role with the national men’s side (in 2010) during his stint as an assistant coach.

Ijaz will also work very closely with the Pakistan U16 and Pakistan “A” sides and will assume charge following the ACC U19 Asia Cup 2019, to be played in Colombo from 5 to 14 September.

What happened to U 19 team has happened to Pakistan Shaheens, there also Central Punjab players were shovedinto the team replacing domestic performers and One Day Cup winners now,
competitive performers from Emerging Asia Cup have been replaced with 2 non-performers from Central Punjab team just before MCC arrives even though squad was announced much earlier.

This in itself raises alarm bells and controversy and shows the reality of Wasim Khan and the rest of PCB how much they try to appease the mafia working behind the scenes. Its also very important for players like Umer Khan or Akif Javed who need to play 50 over format matches with an overseas first class team.

Reality check for those who were celebrating this Dictator cum Chief selector Inzamam v2.0 called Ijaz Ahmed.

Those pulled out were pulled out for the PSL. They weren’t pulled out by selectors but rather their franchise teams. If you have a problem, go talk to the franchises or the players who willingly dropped out for the PSL. Nothing to do with Ijaz who clearly would have loved to have had them (as they were his first picks for this squad before they dropped out). Put your logic where your mouth is please

Note that I have my own problems with Ijaz but I only criticize where criticism is due.
