Australia haven’t swept a bilateral ODI series 5-0 since 2013, when they hosted West Indies, but they are well-placed to do so again when they meet Pakistan in the final one-day international in Dubai on Sunday, 31 March.

Overview

Pakistan v Australia
5th ODI
Dubai International Cricket Stadium
Sunday, 31 March; 15:00 hrs local, 11:00am GMT

Pakistan’s idea behind resting their seniors for this ODI series was to test their bench strength ahead of the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2019. After four successive defeats, it’s apparent that the bench isn’t exactly brimming with vitality.

Pakistan are two completely different sides in the two shorter formats. They are ranked world No.1 on the MRF Tyres ICC T20I Rankings, have a superlative record across conditions, and have a host of players who step up and get the job done. In ODIs, they are ranked No.6, have always blown hot and cold, and are unable to match the frenetic pace that the modern-day game demands.

Even by those standards, though, this series has been lopsided. It just isn’t characteristic of Pakistan to go down without a fight at home. They came the closest to picking up a win on Friday, with Abid Ali and Mohammad Rizwan making centuries, but still ended up falling six runs short of a 278-run target, having suffered a late meltdown.

Pakistan have had their share of centuries this series, but they have been isolated bright spots. Barring the third ODI, they’ve had at least one century in each of the other games. Their bowling has become more incisive as the series has progressed, but they have still not been able to hold Australia back from posting competitive totals.

Australia, meanwhile, are as well-balanced as they have been in recent memory. Their top order is prolific. Various members of their middle order are taking turns to prove their worth ahead of the World Cup. And their bowlers have held their own in the absence of the two senior pacemen, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood. A 5-0 sweep is a very real possibility.

Australia haven't felt Mitchell Starc's absence much during the Pakistan ODIs Australia haven't felt Mitchell Starc's absence much during the Pakistan ODIs
Key players

Mohammad Rizwan (Pakistan): Rizwan is Pakistan’s highest scorer this series, with two centuries. He’s made those runs in tough situations – the first century coming after Pakistan had been reduced to 35/2 and the second from 74/2 in a tough chase of 278.

Aaron Finch has hit peak form ahead of the World Cup Aaron Finch has hit peak form ahead of the World Cup
Aaron Finch (Australia): The Australia captain has hit peak form and looks unstoppable. This series has been quite the turnaround after a dismal start to the year. Nothing boosts a side’s confidence quite like a firing captain, which makes the return to form all the more crucial, ahead of a World Cup.

Conditions

Totals of 250-plus should be par for the course in Dubai. The ground hasn’t really favoured batting first or second. In the last four completed matches, the team batting first has won once, the chasing team has won twice, while one match was tied. It’s going to be a hot Sunday afternoon, with temperatures expected to be around 33℃ at the start.

The most important game of the series .....

Hopefully they give Saad another run and let him play at 3.

Amir needs to be tested in place of Yasir but no way they will drop Yasir especially after his 2 wickets last match and to provide him maximum chance to prove selectors right, which is unfortunate for team Pak going to world cup

We can't have 40 overs of pace

Pakistan won the toss and bowling

Amir should have been included in place of Yasir. There was no need of dropping Mohammad Hasnain. The likes of Abbas will not serve any purpose in limited over format.

Looks like Hasnain is out of WC contention. They should have given a chance to Rauf in this series instead of Abbas or Amir.

With regards to the Azhar Mohmood's statement, they should fill those 2 places with Junaid and Shinwari. Shinwari is good against minnows where we can give rest to shaheen in order to balance his workload.

Unfortunately, he might be going to England for WC.

That would be blunder. This is ODI WC not test championship. He can't offer much on flat decks unless and untill there is little breeze along twith drizzle.

Deserve to loose this match as well. How can we play useless players like Abbas and Yasir?

I can bet that Mickey and co would take Amir and shinwari to the WC. Junaid would be sidelined as usual. They had already decided the squad and would stick to it.

I would rather take Shinwari and Amir than, Junaid and Abbas. Junaid lost his pace and became a trundler lately, plus pitches in england will be dry and offer no swing unless its a cloudy day. June is going to be v hot and it will come down to who has a better batting line up and can pile up runs over 300 will win.

I guess it's going to be like this in 15 squad

Amir
Shaheen
Hasan
junaid
Shinwari
Faheem

Junaid/Shinwari/Faheem will play on rotational basis if Amir performs. Otherwise Faheem will be regular choice and Amir will join the list of bench strength in place of Faheem.

Shaheen, Hasan and Faheem are pretty much confirmed. Only two others will be picked.

Winning or losing is part of game, but not every day hosts are blanked 5-0 at home. To my memory only 2 times this happend - India 1983 against that WIN, that Zimbabwe in 2018 against that PAK. It’s important that PAK avoids 5-0 to this Australia.

I want australia to score 350 plus today so there is no room for anyone to score a comfortable century.

Hasnain drinking coke during the match, ***.

Waqar agreeing with what I have been saying for ages, a good bouncer like that is always a wicket taking delivery. Imagine a bit short and with 140+ speed. Bang into the head. Love mitchel johnson for that, as he applied it in the famous ashes

Do they really think Abbas will have an impact on the flat pitches of England in the summer. The white ball in England doesn't swing and with the anticipated hot weather, he will have Zero impact

The single reason for Abbas not being effective anymore.

I think the fast bowlers for world cup will be

Amir
Shinwari
Hassan
Shaheen and
Junaid

I really wanted husnain in the squad but i think he needs to learn a lot before playing in such a big tournament and there is no mentor in the team to guide him either.

Faheem is a very difficult case for pakistan , he is somewhere between a bowler and all rounder. His batting is unreliable and more often than not he can not hit big. He needs to compete for a fast bowlers spot , is he better than the 5 others i have mentioned above?

Imad wasim is better batsman than faheem and while isnt a good wicket taking option in odis but can keep the batsmen very quite in the middle overs. For me imad wasim wins his place in the side.

Shadab and nawaz are the only two spinners in contention and i think shadab wins hands down , pakistan can pick both in case shadab gets injured during the tournament.

Sarfraz and rizwan the keepers.

Fakhar
Imam
Abid
Babar
Hafeez/haris (hafeez the first choice)
Asif ali

Always a pleasure to see Junaid getting the treatment that his ordinary bowling deserves.

India realised with Ishant that he is not a ODI bowler but they lost many matches as they hell bent on making him one.Same I see with Abbas

The body language of Umar Akmal reflects as if he has won the last match with a gigantic six required of the last ball.

Abbas isn't an ODI bowler. It is shocking that they are playing him in this format

Roy and Bairstow will make mincemeat of Abbas in Trent Bridge. He is definitely not going to the World Cup based on his awful performances in ODIs so far.

Whether people like it or not, Amir will definitely be on the plane. It is down to Junaid vs Shinwari, and I am glad I am not the one to make that depressing choice.

Hasnain won’t be picked either.

5-0 is on the cards here

Powers that be really need to look into Micky Arthur reign

4 failure seasons with karachi Kings and looking completely clueless without Sarfraz in 2 series making blunders after blunders. Still the moment you say anything about him people remind you how he was no 1 coach for SA but never bring his Aus stint.

Pakistan one day record under Arthur is truly unacceptable. We are now also losing test matches on a regular basis in the UAE

I am still furious on Arthur how he was against Abid's selection in SA and it took Imam to get 'high fever' in 4th odi for Abid to get a chance otherwise he was not good enough to be in Arthur's X1. This is so poor!

I don't see Abbas performing in tests after this humiliation. Mental barriers are difficult to get away with. Credit goes to our think tank.

If only keeper could stand close to the stumps while he bowls, you would change 180 shift in his bowling

Trundler junaid's avg was 114 against top 5 sides after champions trophy.now that is also increasing to 200.rubbish bowler

I think Junaid is much better choice... What do you say...?

Junaid is a hack, but if the alternative is Abbas, I will have to pick him with a heavy heart.

Junaid was finished 5 years ago, but he keeps getting lifelines because of our bowling woes.

Pakistan look completely lost out there and not motivated for anything other than a warm up.

Where are the slips? The fielding intensity? Bowling to a plan?

Hopefully none of the three pacers playing today’s game make the final WC squad.

Shaheen
Hasan
Amir
Hasnain
Faheem

Those 5 will make the cut.

Azhar Mehmood has turned all our bowlers like him, a slow medium pacer who concentrate on line and length rather than pace and swing.

Sarfaraz, Arthur and Inzamam must be booted out after the World Cup. This trio has taken Pakistan to new lows in Test and ODI cricket.

One thing for sure. Aussies have found their lost in wilderness under Langer.

Good to see a good Aussies side shaping up for the WC.

Pakistan need to go with the following fast bowlers.

Amir
Hassan
Shaheen
musa/shinwari
Fahim

Should be booted before the world cup so we can have a half decent tournament

Fans need to relax, when was the last time, any fast bowling unit dominated in UAE. Dont judge pak bowlers in UAE pitches please.

Dont forget Azhar. Our bowling has never been this toothless

Not the best day for new ball bowlers anywhere:( Johnny & Warner has put 185/0 in 16 overs!!!!

Shinwari is leaps and bounds ahead of Junaid.
