What's new

Pakistan vs Sri Lanka | 1st Test | Rawalpindi | 11-15th December, 2019 | Day 1 | Match Thread

Excitement is gone after watching Abbass's two overs, bed time in USA, goodnight.

Abbas seems like he's bowling in the nets. This is like batting practice for SL openers. No pace, no consistency in terms of line and length. Pathetic!

What a waste of the new ball by Pakistan

Abbas really has regressed over the last year and a half. Hasn't got much to offer swing wise nothing at all had no pace anyway.

Naseem should come in next over

UAE truly destroyed the cricket of Pakistan. Abbas is terrible. He should be forced to retire

The ball is moving around but our bowlers, including Shaheen, are just so inconsistent. Can't pitch the ball in the same spot for even a couple of deliveries

I thought there will be good crowd but it looks ditto uae

Rashid Latif was commenting yesterday on his youtube channel that PCB has done a shoddy job marketing this historic test - No billboards, no ads, no excitement... nothing. Should have taken a leaf from Ganguly’s book on how to market a test.

Shaheen has bowled really well here.

Lol at Abbas. Terrible. Has no future at this level whatsoever.

Bewal Express was saying that Shaheen Afridi can't bring back the ball to right handers

Test matches attendance is low even in India. People just don't want to watch Test cricket in the stadium

When Misbah was captain he pulled off such stupid stunts like poor team selection. So far it has been poor team selection in all the games he has coached and captained in his career. This test is no different.

Did you see how Ganguly marketed the pink ball test? He apparently flooded Kolkata in pink color & got the PM of Bangladesh to flagoff the historic match & they had a full house for the test in Eden Gardens. Here Pak had an even bigger occasion to celebrate - the return of cricket after 15 years, but no planning was involved in marketing the special test.

Bold call by Misbah to play 4 pacers & drop Yasir, but looks like he has been hard done by the groundsman - this wicket isn't for four pacers. Haris probably will end with highest no. of overs here !!!!

Pink ball Test is something really uncommon for the Indian audience and it was in Kolkata which is in Bengal right next to Bangladesh so a full house for that match was more of a one-off thing.

Yep. Agree completely. If you don't invest in marketing Test cricket, this is what you will get. Pak certainly has the money.

Bold call or rather a stupid call? Regardless of weather or pitch, who plays without a proper spinner in the subcontinent?

That test match was hosted in metropolitan city,if the same test match was hosted in other place i dont think there will be more crowd.

Rain over the next two days and probably bad light early on the days where there is play, so the decision hopefully will not cost Pakistan the game

No wicket in the subcontinent is for four pacers.

Not really. They are selling tickets at really low prices yet the crowd is nil which shows the crowd interest in Test cricket.

Pathetic decision, really. Should have at least gone with one spinner.

LoL 4 fast bowlers ?? People's complained when Mickey chose only one spinner vs SL ,now what the excuse ??

It all depends on how you spin the tale - If PCB had made this a big occasion & marketed it accordingly, people would have come in more numbers to watch the game. Right now, it looks pretty sad considering the significance of this test.

Only way to make money through Test cricket is broadcasting right. You cant make money by the gate money in Tests.

Just look at the state of the ground.

The grass all over the ground is brown not green.

Where are the likes of Wasim, Akhtar, and all the other ex players.

Why should they be invited can't they come and watch and support on their own.

I think, they lost confidence on Yasir's bowling, while Kashif was never a serious pick (probably picked in squad so that it's easier for Misbah to select playing XI). They made a blunder by not picking Gohar & now trying to cover that with 4 pacers' combination. Entirely on Misbah's credit/discredit though - he can't complain against selectors here.

Misbah doesnt know all these pacers are very inexperienced and hence not very capable of exploiting these conditions even if this was a green top.
And it puts extra pressure on them not having a spinner and they are very likely to spray the ball around trying to do a bit extra

So, Abbas joins the long list of Pakistani players who look world class in their first year only to turn out mediocre a year later.

:uakmal :shehzad :fz :hasan :shadab

That's one of the reasons why I have tremendous respect for Babar. The guy never allowed fame and praise to get to his head and works hard to improve even though he's labelled as "Best Pak batsman" everywhere.

If he can manage, Shinwari should go round the wicket - with that angle, he won't get any LBW to lefti. Round the wicket should bring slips also in play.

Pindi stadium looks really old. They should have at least renovated it years ago.

He was world class for two years, no doubt. He is still quite skilled, even now - problem is, guy is 35+ now, if not almost 38 ........ fast bowling isn't something that you can do, hiding 6-7 years in your certificate.

Marketing is spreading awareness. You can make the entry free but if you don't spread awareness about it, no one will know.

Even shahen for me has bowled badly

Too short and not making them play enough

Normally, Yes. But a special day like this could have been better promoted - another example is how Australia markets the Richie day or the Pink test day to draw in more crowds. Better marketing was needed here, maybe like getting PM Khan to inaugurate the test or promoting it like a big extravaganza with celebrities et all to draw the crowds in.

Abbas is 37?? I find that hard to imagine.

Its not like people didn't know about it. They obviously knew but didn't want to go through the hassle of security for a Test game.

Hold your horses. I've never liked Abbas from the first day but he is not hiding 6-7 years, you cant do that in Pakistan. I know because I've lived here my entire life. 2 or 3 at most.

Why isn’t Shoaib there to build up some crowd support?

He was world class for two series to be precise. One in England and one against Australia in the UAE. Rest of the lot, he looked bang average TBH.

Morning P'Per's....TC back to Pak....gr8 going.....
just turned on the telly.....crowd looks happy... but lots of vacant spots to be seen....unbelievable...u have tc after so long...why the fridge would this not be a sellout....as an indian fan i thought only indian fans have had a surfeit of cricket...overdosed ...and hence empty seats in indian tests...but u guys...cmon...
that said...feel 4 pacers just lenghthens the tail...i'd take yassir over any one pacer...and he's middling them with the bat as wel....anyways hope for a good contest...good luck to pak

Wow man shows we haven’t developed even a centimetre in 15 years if someone could pull the footage of the last test match from 15 years ago we haven’t developed this stadium even one bit exactly like the country it’s sad

It's shocking how poor SL batsmen but that really tells us how bad our bowlers are. This pitch has a lot to offer but our bowlers are totally useless!

Why didn't Naseem come in to bowl after Abbas. Shinwari doesnt really swing the ball. Naseem swings it at pace.

Karunaratne is one of the best test openers right now. But only Shaheen is bowling well, and you need both ends bowing well in tests.
