What's new

Pakistan will be one of the favourites for the 2023 World Cup

Every team has this issue. One or two passengers in the squad.

I believe Sarfraz will be the one.

I’m not talking one or two. At times it’s half the squad.

To minimise the deleterious effects by saying it happens to every team isn’t valid. There is no other major team that has a history of this like Pakistan. We’re talking decade after decade of consistent selection of non-performers.

I yearn for the day we only carry one or two.

Ugh it's in India again?! Why not SA or SL or WI? It will be a borefest. Lame flat pitches is all they have for their amazing FTB team. Not looking forward to it.

2011 was honestly a boring WC. 2015 and 2019 were much more exciting These flat pans have killed the game, detest any cricket in subcontinent, apart from Sri Lanka, as they do produce lively decent pitches occasionally.

Batting aggregates:

India 2011:
Average 27.34
Strike-rate 78.39

Australia/New Zealand 2015
Average 31.17
Strike-rate 88.97

England 2019
Average 31.56
Strike-rate 88.15

2011 had comparatively lower scores. 2015 had completely flat pans, specially for the matches in Australia. 2019 was better though.

Lol!! People think anything that doesn't seam or swing is a flat track.

So many things can happen from now until 2023 but the planning needs to start soon.

You saw how after the 2015 WC debacle, England made winning the 2019 WC their goal and everything they did from the change of coaches, selectors and players was devoted to achieving that goal. It wasn't just changing personnel too but changing a mindset - for once, Test cricket took a backseat to the 50 over team.

Pakistan throughout its history however has never formed a coherent, long-term vision about its cricket. We go from series to series, flying by the seat of our pants and that is not a recipe for success in today's sporting or corporate world where systems are put in place to ensure consistent outcomes and eradicate the inconsistency our cricket's known for.

We already have Raza Hasan, Umer Khan, Usama Mir, Muhammad Irfan, Muhammad Asghar, Zafar Gohar etc.

It is only a matter of grooming them.

PCB should consider it.

Also the pitches in India will most probably suit reverse-swing.

We can take Hasan Ali if he gets his act right before the WC 2023.

True. Now that we are saying random stuff without any basis, here's more.... England will take it easy now that they won the WC. NZ will lose interest after this loss and their stars will retire. All the Aussies will be old and all the saffers too. They will unanimously declare Pak as winner before a ball being bowled.

They will declare Pakistan winners, but only after they have first lost their opening game against WI :)

Dude, all these guys literally grew up playing in Asian conditions. What an absurd thing to say. :))

They do seem to do best in England. In UAE's Asian conditions in the Asia Cup, they did a lot worse than they did in the WC.

Pakistan winning world cup on indian soil would be a national disaster so it can never be allowed.Looking forward to 9-0 and KO in group stage.

No IPL experience.
No bilateral international experience of playing in India.
Playing matches under intense security given the political situation.
This will be a major disadvantage for Pakistan in 2021 T20 WC and 2023 WC.
They will be up against it.
Never has a World Cup in ODIs been exclusively held in India before.

Ideally they have to do well in 2023 WC, it’s been shoddy performances after 1999. they need to start planning right now

Looking at the political climate and how it’s likely to get worse, if Pakistan win the WC in India, that would eclipse everything India’s achieved against Pakistan

At this moment, we don't even know if Pakistan is going to play in WC forget about being the favourites.

I think 2011(which should give us some hope) was the only highlight maybe 2019 can be considered good cause we almost made it but you are right it's been tough as a fan

We don't have any world class spinners, batting though improved is still hit and miss, we might still have Misbah in charge and his understanding of ODI cricket is as much as I understand Swahili.

So the odds are against, there's no way we're going to be favourites. That'll be India and England. Looks like we're going to have to rely on the unpredictability tag yet again to get us through to the latter stages.

Time to induct "Fresh Blood" in the Pakistan side

In my opinion Pak cricket management should go with a fresh approach to re-build " Team Green".
Players like Haider Ali, Khushdil Shah, Zeeshan Ashraf, Rohail Nazir and Zafar Gohar and other deserving players should be included in our T20 and ODI teams to prepare for the next ODI WC 2023.
Pak cricket fans should show patience and have low expectations with the team if they take these players to Aus WCT20.
In my opinion if we take Shoaib, Hafeez, Kamran, Sarfraz and Wahab then we cant go pass qualifying stages. As these players play to retain their place in the team and show only 1-2 performances and fail badly when needed.

Anyways, we should support ex-cricketers like Ramiz Raja and M. Yousuf to raise voices againt Malik and Hafeez and any other undeserving players in contention for selection.

Thanx

We've been a poor 50 overs side since 2006. We are so far behind the top teams in the batting department, and lack a world class spinner. I'd be surprised if we make it out of the group stage.

Major surgery is needed to the squad for us to compete in the tournament. A new batting order with Babar Azam, a new pace attack with Shaheen Afridi, a wicket taking, well disciplined spinner and a solid WK maybe Rohail Nazir.

We have a good core of Babar, Imam, Shaheen, Amir, Haris.

Imad Wasim is also quite a capable player and is a very useful cricketer.

By then, Babar, Imam, Shaheen should be much improved. Amir and Haris can provide crucial experience.

What we need to do is get a new wicketkeeper, 2 new batsmen, and a quality spinner or two.

In the 2011 WC held in India, we had a mediocre team but still came close to winning. The conditions will suit us.

If we invest in the right players, we have a solid chance. We really should aim to win this one.

everyone can dream. Pakistan will probably make semis or quarters. It ends there. India is winning the world cup. It's already preordained by the gods.

kohli's world cup. It's going to be his chance to win a WC on his own. bumrah will be in his prime. shami is still only 29.
plenty of other young stars
jaiswal, paddikal, Shaw, gill. india is going to annihilate every team in 2023. They will win the champions trophy that follows as well.

With Shahdab and his new found hitting ability i think we should groom Zafar also along with another specialist spinner, Haider Ali along side Sharjeel should be under the radar as well and i really hope Fakhar get back his old self, pace attack is gold under these conditions we just need aggressive batters and proper spinners to accompany Shahdab.

Sharjeel
Haider/imam
Babar
Fakhar/Haris/Abdullah
Rohail/Rizwan
Shahdab
Zafar/imad
Amir/wahab/Hasan
Naseem/Hasnain/Rauf
Shaheen
Spinner??
