A Pakistani cricketer who beat his wife with his own bat and forced her to drink bleach while urging her to kill herself is set to join a top British club after being spared jail.

Mustafa Bashir, 34, hit his hotel receptionist wife with his own bat during a jealous outburst, then warned her: 'If I hit you with this bat with my full power then you would be dead.'

During another furious attack, he held Fakhara Karim, 33, by the neck, poured bleach down her throat and forced her to take tablets while ordering her to kill herself.

She told the court how her confidence was crushed by her jealous lover, who berated her for wearing westernised clothes and called her friends 'English slag girls'.

But Bashir was spared jail at Manchester Crown Court, where the judge decided that he did not pass the custody threshold because his ex-wife was not a vulnerable person.

His defence solicitor claimed that he would join former county champions Leicestershire as a professional player after being offered a contract just before his arrest, on the condition that he was not jailed. However, the club deny having any links to him, saying today they were 'bemused' by the claims.
Sentencing Bashir to an 18-month jail term suspended for two years, Judge Mansell QC ordered him to attend a workshop entitled 'building better relationships' pay £1,000 costs and banned him from contacting Miss Karim indefinitely under the terms of a restraining order.

He told Bashir: 'This relationship started well but you began controlling her and how she spent her money.

'You told her how to spend her money and you tried to turn her against her family who you regularly insulted. She would buy clothes that were of a western style which you disapproved of and called her a slag and said her friends were "English slag girls".

What a monster.

Why is he referred to as Pakistani though?

Has this story been reported correctly? If it's true he forced her to drink bleach then that has to be attempted murder surely?

I don't think he'd get a suspended sentence and ordered to attend a workshop to build better relationships for that.

This reminds of of Oscar Pistorius who first beat up wife with a cricket bat, she ran in the bathroom and locked herself up. Oscar fired 4 shots through the bathroom door killing her

Leicestershire 'bemused' at wife-beater connection

A cricketer beats up his wife but is spared jail because his lawyer told the judge that he was about to be given a Leicestershire CC contract. However Leicestershire know nothing about it - the cricketer just made it all up.

Leicestershire County Cricket Club are aware of stories that have been published this morning regarding Mustafa Bashir.

The club are bemused by these stories. Any references to Mustafa Bashir signing or being approached to sign for Leicestershire County Cricket Club are completely false. The club have never spoken to Mustafa Bashir or an agent, nor offered a contract to the player.

Where do they get that from.

Pathetic that he was only sentenced for 5 years in prison. Why even have jail then ?

Pak cricketer's wife beating sentence to be reviewed in UK

A British judge today ordered a review of a sentence handed down to a Pakistani national, who escaped jail time for beating his wife with a bat, after claiming that he had been offered a contract by a cricket club.

MustafaBashir's legal team had claimed that prison would ruin his career as a cricketer, leading to a suspended sentence by Judge Richard Mansell at Manchester Crown Court last month.

However, the judge came under pressure after the cricket club denied ever being in contact withBashir.

"Further information relevant to the sentence has become available to the court," the judge said, setting a sentence review hearing on Friday.

Manchester-basedBashirhad admitted two counts of assault occasioning actual bodily harm after the court was told he beat his wife,Fakhara Karim, with a cricket bat, throttled her in public and also forced her to drink bleach.

Mansell sentencedBashirto 18 months' prison, suspended for two years, and ordered the 34-year-old to attend a workshop entitled "building better relationships", pay 1,000 pounds costs and banned him from contacting Karim.

In his sentencing remarks, he did not believe Karim, 33, was vulnerable as she was "an intelligent woman with a network of friends" and a college degree.

A suspended sentence in the UK relates to a sentence where the accused can escape jail time by serving a period of probation.

Leicestershire County Cricket Club chief executive Wasim Khan said: "Leicestershire CCC are appalled that Bashir could have invented a job offer from the club in order, it would seem, to evade a prison sentence".

"The club are actively involved in the fight against domestic abuse and had already arranged a Bowling Out Domestic Violence cricket match in September in support of the White Ribbon Campaign, set up to tackle domestic violence," Khan said.

"So Bashir's claim was deeply disturbing for the club and we will continue to do what we can to support the authorities bring about justice," he said.

The sentencing and the judge's remarks had provoked widespread outrage among campaigners.

Bashirmet Karim in Pakistan and got married in 2013. Bashir berated Karim for wearing Western clothing, tried to turn her against her own family, and repeatedly beat her.

A Pakistani husband initially spared prison after telling a court he could lose the offer of a contract with an English county cricket club was jailed for 18 months on Friday.

Mustafa Bashir, 33, was given a suspended sentence at Manchester Crown Court on March 22 for assaulting wife Fakhara Karim.

Judge Richard Mansell was told then that if Bashir was spared custody he would be employed as a professional player by Leicestershire County Cricket Club.

But shortly after Mansell passed his original sentence, Leicestershire said they had never had any contact with Bashir, who was said to have hit his wife with a cricket bat and forced her to drink bleach.

Club Statement 3 – Mustafa Bashir

Leicestershire County Cricket Club welcomes the news that Mustafa Bashir has on review now been sentenced to 18 months imprisonment because the judge was “fundamentally misled” about Bashir having been offered a contract with the club. The club is happy to have played its part in bringing Bashir’s invention to the attention of the Court and ensuring that justice could be done.

Leicestershire CCC Chief Executive Wasim Khan said: “The club is deeply committed to the White Ribbon campaign set up to tackle domestic violence, so we were horrified at being used as a means for someone who had been convicted of appalling violence to his wife to escape imprisonment. His new sentence of 18 months in prison is a much more fitting punishment for what he did and good news for the fight against domestic violence.”
