Number of Australians born in Pakistan doubles

In terms of population growth, the second fastest increase between 2006 and 2016 was in the number of persons born in Pakistan.

The number of Pakistani-born Australians has doubled in the last five years, the 2016 Census data reveals.

The population of Pakistani-Australians stood at 61,913 (37,720 males and 24,195 females) in 2016, an increase from 30,221 noted in the 2011 Census.

According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, in terms of Australia's population growth, for the top 50 countries of birth (excluding Australia) at 30 June 2016, persons born in Nepal had the highest rate of increase between 2006 and 2016 with an average annual growth rate of 27.8 per cent.

However, this growth began from a small base of 4,400 persons at 30 June 2006.

The second fastest increase over this period was in the number of persons born in Pakistan (13.2 per cent per year on average), followed by those born in Brazil (12.1 per cent), India (10.7 per cent) and Bangladesh (8.9 per cent).

In the last few years Australia has welcomed more Pakistanis than ever before. In 2011, 3,775 Pakistanis arrived in Australia; 5,893 arrived in 2012; 6,347 in 2013; 6,355 in 2014; and 6,313 in 2015.

Of the top 50 countries of birth, the fastest decline was for persons born in Malta, with an average annual decrease of 1.5 per cent, followed by persons born in Poland (1.3 per cent).

I thought this new census data could be interesting for people wanting to know more about Australia out of interest or for migration purposes.

Most Pakistanis and Urdu speakers live in New South Wales

States of New South Wales and Victoria house the most number of Pakistanis and Urdu speakers in Australia. Can you guess which state has the lead?

The 2016 Census data has revealed some interesting facts about the Pakistani and Urdu-speaking community living in Australia.

Pakistani community is one of the highest growing in Australia, and contributes the most number of people to the country’s Muslim population.

The population of Pakistani-Australians stood at 61,913 (37,720 males and 24,195 females) in 2016, an increase from 30,221 noted in the 2011 Census.

The state of New South Wales had the most number of Pakistanis, followed by Victoria.

Here’s the breakdown of where most Pakistanis live in Australia.

NSW(Major city Sydney) : 24,542

VIC(Major city Melbourne) : 21,125

WA(Major city Perth) : 5,437

QUEENSLAND(Major city Brisbane) : 4,675

SA(Major city Adelaide) : 3,445

As far as Urdu-speaking population is concerned, there were 69,293 people speaking Urdu at home. NSW took the lead here as well.

Here’s a breakdown of where they live.

I feel like Pakistani-Americans and Pakistani-Australians are like really similar, both groups integrate pretty well and are pretty westernized considering how recently most of them migrated.

I think the "Urdu-speaking" stat is misleading cause most Pakistanis do list urdu as their language even if they speak Punjabi or another ethnic language.

Agreed, this was the discussion in local social media circles to list Urdu as official language in census to ensure Pakistanis and our national language get recognition and i certainly listed Urdu as language even though we speak Punjabi/Urdu at home but this will bring positive results for community with increased funding and support for Urdu as a language at school level.

Yeah it's the same here, half my fam speak Punjabi and we put down urdu and i know pashto and sindhi speakers that do the same. There are also a lot of indian muslims that put urdu down as their language so not all urdu speakers are pakistani.

I hope with greater interaction with other races it helps the Australians be a bit less rascist..

Australia's still like 90% white, so I wouldn't call it a multicultural country even if they try real hard to portray that image to be more like America, there only pockets of multiculturalism in the big cities.

I can't say racism is not an issue but it is not a major issue that impacts people on daily basis. You will get an idiot here and there but overall it is not a big problem in major cities anyway.

Recently i had a bit of drama, while i was getting off a flight i tried to get out of seat to reach for overhead luggage and a lady in opposite seat came out at the same time so we both stopped and i kept waiting for her so she could go first but her bag was bit far and only way to end the deadlock was for me to go first which i did and lady was fine with it. This idiot guy (not related to woman) shouts at me out of nowhere "We let women go in our country first *abuses*". I kind of reacted to his verbal diarrhea but realised he was a typical bogan who had come to a big city for the first time perhaps so ignored it.

I think these kind of incidents can happen anywhere so wouldn't worry about it and certainly won't generalise based on few idiots.

That is really rare in America and I live in a conservative state. People in America are racist in a more covert way.

I remember youtuber Adam Saleh posting about his racist experience in Australia on his first visit and he had never experienced anything like that in New York.

Not just Australians, it would be racist to label Pakistani's terrorists just because a few Pakistani's are terrorists but some feel its fine to label Australian racists because a few Australians are racist. Ignorance plays a big part too.

Australia is a great place to live; a peaceful, progressive and and prosperous nation.

This.

Some misinformed posters on here seem to think their very limited view of other countries and interactions they've had there are enough to pass off as a fact. They aren't.

Adam Saleh is a drama queen of the highest order

He has a severe victimhood complex and is always looking to garner sympathy in this way.

Classless person not worth anyone's time

Its especially funny to see North Americans take shots at Australians for racism LMAO.

Adam Saleh is a money and fame-hungry clown. He uses the Islamophobia card to earn millions and continues to do so.

Recently, he accused an American airline of Islamophobia after he was ejected from an aircraft; the news and the video went viral. On FB alone, the video was viewed 20 million times.

It turned out that, after boarding the plane and sitting down, he started counting down loudly (to the point of screaming) in Arabic and made suspicious gestures which resulted in him being ejected.

All of this pranks are fake. Speaking of aircrafts, recently, he also claimed he travelled in a bag in the cargo hold area of an airline from one Australian city to another, and he also filmed the whole journey in which he was sweating profusely. Yes, sweating profusely where the temperature is -50C.

I despise him with a passion. A fraud.

As someone that lives in Sydney I can say without a doubt that it is a wonderful city and by large so is Australia. Can only say that from personal experience however.

His knickers got in a twist again after the video went viral; the airline released a video of him boarding the plane.
