Pakistan's best known Qawwal Amjad Sabri shot dead in Karachi

To bring the thread back on track.

This is extremely disappointing, for the lack of a better word. What's even worse is that the lineage may come to a halt.

To those who don't know Amjad Sabri came from a family which traces its musical links to the 17th Century court of India's Mughal empire. The family claims to be a direct descendant of Mian Tansen.

Extremely painful.

Does not matter whether he was Shia or Sunni.

This is a violent act and I hope the one who committed this gets punished severely in this world and in the hereafter.

Shocking.

'Sabri murderers' make startling disclosures during initial interrogation, CTD reveals

Two 'militants' suspected of affiliation with the outlawed Lashkar-e-Jhangvi (LJ) disclosed information regarding their motives and modus operandi, a senior Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) official told Dawn on Friday.

The two 'LJ militants' Ishaq, alias Bobby, and Asim, alias Capri, from Liaquatabad were arrested earlier this week for involvement in 28 cases, including the high-profile murder of renowned qawwal Amjad Sabri, who was gunned down in Karachi in June.

The CTD's Raja Umer Khattab, officer in-charge of Transnational Terrorism Intelligence Group (TTIG), told Dawn that during an initial interrogation, Capri confessed the men had targeted the famous qawwal as he used to attend majalis in the month of Muharram.

Capri also claimed that Sabri had done a programme on TV channel in which slain activist Khurram Zaki allegedly uttered some questionable words that the qawwal had supported.

According to Khattab, Capri, originally a resident of Karachi's Gulbahar area, shifted to Amjad Sabri's neighbourhood with the intention of targeting him.

The CTD claimed that Capri's two brothers are also militants who are languishing in jails, whereas his third brother was killed in a sectarian attack.

Bobby, considered a ‘computer expert,' told the investigators that he had collected material from the internet regarding the activities of the qawwal, Khattab claimed.

According to the CTD, Bobby, considered an 'expert shooter' was the one to hit Amjad Sabri. A resident of Karachi's Orangi Town, Bobby is a Hafiz-i-Quran who joined LJ in 2012, the CTD said.

Two of Bobby's accomplices, along with other militants, were killed in an encounter with law enforcement agencies during a deadly terror attack on Karachi's Jinnah International Airport in June 2014.

Family of slain sufi qawwal Amjad Sabri has decided to leave Pakistan over security concerns.

The late sufi qawwal’s brother, Azmat Sabri, revealed they intend to shift to London in order to protect their lives. “Although, we have spent all our lives in Karachi, we’re now scared. Our lives are at stake in Liaquatabad since Amjad’s murder,” he said.

Thousands bid farewell to Amjad Sabri

Speaking to Express News, Azmat said, “We feel we are constantly being watched and we don’t feel comfortable living like this.”

“We feel insecure and it has become difficult living under these circumstances,” he said while adding that Amjad has left behind three daughters and two sons and the family must think about their future and well being.

“We will leave as soon as we get our visas,” said Azmat.

Amjad’s mother has sought help from the government to go abroad. However, Azmat said he would apply for visa through former chief justice Iftikhar Chaudhry and will also request the government to bear their travel expenses. On Sunday, former CJP visited Sabri’s house in Liaquatabad.

One of Pakistan’s best known Sufi musicians, Sabri, was gunned down in a targeted attack on June 22, 2016.

Amjad had left his home and was heading to a television studio in June last year when armed motorcyclists pulled up beside his car and fired a volley of bullets at him, killing him on the spot.

The targeted killing triggered a nationwide outpouring of grief with tributes for the famous musician pouring in from all over the world.

Pathetic. Pakistan Govt. will never do anything to protect the lives of its citizens so we should simply stop hoping. Even Amjad Sabri had requested for security because he was getting threats but the Govt. refused to do anything and we all saw how that turned out. Looks like this pathetic, no good Govt. is waiting for the same to happen now.

As a lot of posters already know, I take patriotism to another level but I'm never ignorant. You have to be realistic. And the truth is, Pakistan is fast turning into a country where Islamist terrorists will prevail. The sole reason for Amjad Sabri being shot (and other qawwals under threat, like his brother) was the fact that their love for the Prophet (PBUH) or Imam Ali (A.S) is too much for them to handle. These people from different organisations, be it JEI, TTP, ISIS or whatever you may call it believe in slaying anyone who does not live life in accordance to their personal principles. Pathetic.

Sufism is particularly being targeted. Especially with the terrorist attack that we recently saw at the shrine of Lal Shahbaz Qalandar in Sehwan. Absolutely disgusting. The Govt. needs to get serious about this because Madrassas on every corner of every street of every city are just breeding these frustrated, potential terrorists. Pakistan Govt. is indirectly involved in all of this going on because they refuse to stop any of this. But why would they? They are puppets of the Saudi Kings.

In Pakistan it is common for everyone to call our leaders puppets of the West or America in particular but the fact is, these hypocrites serve the Saudi's. Especially PMLN leaders. How can we expect anything to get better when we have military collations with them and not only that but our former Chief of Army Staff being appointed as the General for the coalition. You can optimistic and look at how the security situation has gotten better and there are fewer bomb blasts and what not but the fact is that things are going to get worse, much, much worse.

The Govt. refuses to seal borders with Afghanistan. The open border that lead to the brutal murders of HUNDREDS of children in a school. Things like this will continue to happen. The very best of luck to the family of Ustaad Amjad Sabri because certainly, the Govt. has failed them time and again.

An anti-terrorism court awarded the death penalty to a Lashkar-e-Jhangvi member Ishaq alias Bobby on three counts of murder in a case pertaining to sectarian killing, The News reported on Sunday.

The LeJ member is a high-profile convict on death row for multiple crimes including the murder of renowned Qawwal Amjad Sabri. This is the third capital punishment among others awarded to him in a month.

The ATC has found him guilty of killing Syed Zakir Hussain, Muhammad Nawaz, and Muhammad Younus in firing at Dargah Nazar Ali Shah in Korangi on August 23, 2014.

The prosecution said Ishaq and his accomplice shot at victims and fled the scene. He was on the run until November 2016 when police detained him.

Apart from the death penalty, the ATC also slapped a fine of Rs50,000 and a 10-year imprisonment sentence. The judge also ordered the convict to pay a compensation of Rs200,000 to the legal heirs of each victim, otherwise suffer additional imprisonment of six months.

The judge observed that the offence was a total disregard for human life without any enmity and such deterrent punishment was not only to maintain balance with the gravity of wrong but also to make an example for others as a preventive measure for the reformation of the society.

Ishaq and his accomplice Asim alias Capri face multiple trials in anti-terrorism courts. They have also been convicted by a military court for the murders of Military Police personnel and Sabri.

The profile of the suspects, based on the input from the Counter-Terrorism Department, describes them as professional hitmen, experts in killing their targets in public and radicalised from a tender age.

CTD arrests ‘mastermind’ in Amjad Sabri murder case

KARACHI: The Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD) of Sindh police on Tuesday claimed to have rounded up the ‘mastermind’ who planned the killing of renowned Qawwal, Amjad Sabri, ARY News reported.

Amjad Sabri, aged 45, was traveling by car from his home in the Liaquatabad area to a television studio when a motorcycle pulled up alongside the vehicle and the attackers opened fire on June 22, 2016.

The killing of one of Pakistan’s most loved qawwals and naat khawan saw the nation descending into shared sorrow, with an outpouring of grief the likes of which weren’t seen before on Pakistani social media.

According to a CTD spokesperson, an operative of Lashkar-e-Jhangvi, Qasim Rasheed was rounded up when he was activating his compliance after getting released from jail.

CTD said Asim Capri and Ishaq Boby killed Amjad Sabri on the directives of Qasim Rasheed from jail.

Rasheed has confessed to killing security officers and Amjad Sabri in his initial statement. Handgrenades and arms have also been recovered from the possession of Qasim Rasheed.

It must be noted that the convicts in Amjad Sabri murder case, Ishaq and Asim were handed two death sentences each in the court after it found them guilty in an imam bargah attack in Karachi.
