Pakistan's Foreign Minister - Bilawal Bhutto Zardari

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said on Sunday that he did not see the need for holding early elections in the country on the demand of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Chairman Imran Khan, as the government looked for solutions to internal problems.

In an interview with Al-Jazeera, the foreign minister said that the current government inherited “a divided country and a collapsed economy” from its predecessor, adding that early election would further the agenda of the previous government.

“In order to address the challenges inherited from the previous government, it is essential that the whole country gets united as no single political party or individual can address the situation alone,” he said. “The government is looking for solutions to internal problems and consensus at the international level.”

Rubbishing the accusations of a foreign conspiracy behind the removal of Imran Khan, Bilawal, also the Chairman of the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), said the political leaders were supposed to speak the truth to their people instead of coming up with such conspiracy theories. “It is for the first time that a prime minister was removed constitutionally through a vote of confidence and not through a coup or court order.”

Asked about the early elections, Bilawal said that instead of furthering democracy, the early elections would instead further Imran Khan’s agenda. He stressed the important of completing the five-year term of the assemblies unless there was any urgency which currently was not there.

To another question, Foreign Minister Bilawal said that Kashmir was an unfinished agenda of the Partition, and since Narendra Modi’s election, the space for Muslims in India as well as the Kashmiris was shrinking.

He said the people of Pakistan and Indian wanted to live in peace but in order to achieve that it was essential to respect international laws and conventions to address the issue of terrorism and extremism.

Coming to Afghanistan, the foreign minister said that Pakistan was engaging with the war-torn country in the interest of its own as well as the neighbourhood.

However, he said that the TTP had been involved in terror attacks in the past, which were still going on. He said that Pakistan would work with the Afghan government to address the challenge posed by the terrorist outfits.

Bilawal lauds OIC’s role for Muslim Ummah
Bilawal said the issues of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJ&K) and Palestine had been the unfished agenda of the United Nations

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Saturday said that the issues of Indian Illegally Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJ&K) and Palestine had been the unfished agenda of the United Nations and stressed upon the international community to work together to resolve them peacefully in resolutions, reported local media.

Addressing a joint presser with Secretary General of the Organisation of the Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Hissein Brahim Taha, the foreign minister said that they were grateful to the OIC GS for undertaking his first bilateral visit to Pakistan.

He expressed the hope that his visit to Azad Kashmir would send a message to the entire world that the entire Ummah stood united with the people of IIOJ&K. It would be a stark reminder to the UN and the international community about the long-standing unfinished agenda which required global community’s collective efforts for peaceful resolution.

About his meeting with the OIC secretary general, the foreign minister said that they held fruitful exchange of views on different issues confronting the Muslim Ummah.

Earlier, Secretary-General of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) Hissein Brahim Taha on Saturday arrived here on a three-day visit. Taking place at the invitation of Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, this is his first country visit since assuming office in November 2021. At the airport, he was received by Pakistan’s Permanent Representative to OIC Rizwan Saeed Sheikh and Director General OIC Farrukh Iqbal Khan. During the visit, the OIC chief would hold a meeting with Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif and hold talks with Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari. Accompanied by a five-member delegation, Hissein Brahim Taha will also visit Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK).

The meetings with ministers for Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan Affairs, information technology, and commerce is also on his agenda.

The Foreign Office said that during bilateral talks, the OIC secretary-general and the foreign minister would discuss inter alia issues on the agenda of OIC including the Jammu and Kashmir dispute, Islamophobia, and the humanitarian situation in Afghanistan.

Pakistan as a founding member of OIC will continue to make efforts to promote Islamic solidarity, unity, and dialogue in the organisation.

Poor kids some are without even slippers in a dilipitated school forced to say cheese and smile while wife killers son poses with his shoes which are worth around $1,900 like a true bhaigairat. This is why Pak elites keep masses illiterate. So easily controlled. These sad children will unfortunately grow up to have their own families and pass on what they’ve been forcibly taught in this picture.

India has invited Pakistan’s foreign minister to a meeting of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation (SCO) that it is hosting in May, Indian media reported on Wednesday, signalling a possible thaw in relations between the nuclear-armed rivals.

The invitation came days after Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif called for talks with India over all outstanding issues, including India-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJK), before clarifying that talks cannot take place until the “illegal actions of August 5, 2019” are reversed.

Pakistan on Thursday said that it is yet to decide on India's invite to Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari to attend a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) in Goa from May.

"Pakistan and India are members of SCO. India is holding the chairmanship of the SCO Council of Heads of State for 2022-2023. These invitations are being processed as per standard procedures and a decision will be taken in due course," said Pakistan's Foreign Affairs Ministry spokesperson.

India has invited Pakistan's foreign minister to the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) meeting scheduled to take place on May 4-5, 2023 in Goa.

"SCO is an important transregional organization that aims to strengthen economic linkages and cooperation among its Member States in different fields. Every year, SCO develops a calendar of activities, which include the Meeting of the Foreign Ministers," added the spokesperson.

India has formally sent invitations to all members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) including Pakistan and China for the upcoming foreign ministers' meeting which will be held in Goa from May 4-5.

Chumming unto the Russians and getting a photo op in the week IMF flies into Pakistan is either being naïve or purposely stupid! One would have thought the govt. would have learnt a lesson after the last Russia visit fiasco.

On a positive note Russia will have surplus refined product post Europe ban being imposed next week. Unlike crude neither China or India need refined product from Russia. Time for Pakistan to use diplomatic brains by getting refined product from Russia on very favourable credit terms, in the meantime ensuring not to hurt the sentiments of traditional energy lenders Saudi and UAE.

Cmon Bilawal nows the time to apply some shrewd political nous!

Pakistan-US anti-terror talks from next month, says Bilawal

Pakistan and the United States will hold talks next month to explore possibilities of coordinating their efforts to combat terrorism, Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari told Dawn on Friday.

During his one-day stay in Washington to attend the annual prayer breakfast, the foreign minister had a separate meeting with US State Depart*ment’s counselor Derek Chollet as well who assured him that “the US stands with Pakistan in combating terrorism for the safety of all”.

Mr Chollet said in a tweet after the meeting that he conveyed his deep condolences to the ******tani foreign minister on the recent bombing in Peshawar and “discussed progress towards ******tan’s economic stability and flood recovery”.

Mr Bhutto-Zardari also told Dawn that the talks focused on “terrorism and on Pakistan’s efforts” to recover from last summer’s devastating floods.

“We are grateful for the support we received from the US,” he said. “Not just for bilateral assistance but also for supporting the Geneva conference.”

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Saturday said that it would not take much time for terrorism to go to other places beyond Pakistan if the interim Afghan government did not demonstrate the “will and capacity” to take on militant groups operating from its territory.

Addressing the Munich Security Conference in Germany, the PPP chairman said the most important issue regarding Afghanistan in the region was the “security and terrorist threat emanating out” of the country, adding that there was a whole “alphabet soup” of terrorist organisations that were based out of Afghanistan.

He rued that not enough seriousness was paid to the issue by the international community or the Afghan government.

“The concern is that if we and the interim government don’t take these groups seriously and they don’t demonstrate the will and the capacity to take on terrorist groups then they will conduct terrorist activities in the region first — we are already witnessing an uptick in terrorist activity in Pakistan since the fall of Kabul — but it won’t be long before it reaches somewhere else.”

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has hinted that Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) chief Imran Khan may not have a future in politics if he refuses to follow "the democratic path".

The foreign minister is presently in Germany as he participates in the Munich Security Conference.

In an interview with CNBC, the minister said "Pakistan has had a history that is not hidden from anyone. We have had more than half the time of our country's history under direct military rule and various transitions in between; at the moment I believe Pakistan is in a period of transition and absolutely it could go either way."

FOREIGN Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has said that mixed signals from the Pakistan side were responsible for the Afghan Taliban’s inaction against the outlawed TTP.

In an interview with German broadcaster DW Urdu, the foreign minister said the previous government was asking the interim Afghan government to facilitate reconciliation with the Tehreek-i-Taliban Pakistan and had plans to resettle the militants in Pakistan. But every Pakistani was demanding that terrorists who were involved in heinous attacks such as the Army Public School massacre could never be “our friends”, he added.

Earlier in an interview with CNBC, the foreign minister blamed the PTI government for negotiating with terrorists without any precondition. Calling it a “policy of appeasement,” the foreign minister said it blew up in Pakistan’s face.

PPP Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Sunday criticised the higher judiciary and called out what he said were its “double standards” when dealing with legal matters of PTI chief Imran Khan.

Addressing a seminar at the Sindh Assembly in Karachi, the foreign minister said the public was looking towards the parliament and judiciary but “they can’t see any hope”.

“I have to, unfortunately, say that it is very difficult for political parties to defend the double standards and actions with which the higher judiciary is proceeding.”

Judiciary applying double standards, says Bilawal
Bilawal says “we are following holy cow system, where there are separate laws for common man and holy cows"

Addressing an event at the Sindh Assembly to mark the golden jubilee of the 1973 Constitution, Bilawal said there was corruption in every institution, including the judiciary and executive.

“We are following a holy cow system, where there are separate laws for the common man and holy cows. There should be one law for the common man as well as a judge,” he insisted.

“Each Pakistani is equal before the Constitution, which is being continuously attacked since its formulation,” he said. “We will not tolerate a dual justice system. You can re-write the Constitution to save your favorite but just an editorial is enough to send Benazir Bhutto’s government home. It is difficult for parties like the PPP to defend such practices,” he declared, local media reports.

“A judicial system of such double standards can’t run where a prime minister from Larkana is sent to the gallows while the cases of prime minister from Zaman Park continue to be deferred. We will not tolerate this system. The judges are making a mockery of themselves,” he asserted. He said it was impossible to change the whole law for saving the government of an individual.

The PPP, the minister said, had been saying from day one that the NAB was created for political engineering. “I wonder what the judges are trying to look for in the NAB law amendment. If they want to disband the NAB, go ahead, we are not interested in it,” he declared.

Addressing the United Nations General Assembly on Friday, Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari urged the global community to unite and take unified and practical steps to tackle the menace of Islamophobia.

"Since the tragedy of 9/11, Islamophobia has only escalated in different parts of the world. Muslims are being associated with terrorism and extremism, and it has found acceptance in mainstream media too," he said while addressing a high-level event to commemorate the International Day to Combat Islamophobia.

Co-convened by the General Assembly president and the Pakistani foreign minister, the meeting discussed ways and means to deal with growing Islamophobia, as highlighted in the 2020 Assembly resolution designating March 15 as an the international day to combat the phenomenon.

“The observance of this Day serves to reinforce our shared commitment to raise awareness about the insidious phenomenon of Islamophobia, advance mutual respect and understanding, and develop concrete measures to eradicate this contemporary plague,” he told delegates in the UN General Assembly Hall, while highlighting that Islam is a religion of moderation, tolerance and pluralism.

Bilawal said that Islamophobia was an important challenge in the current age and that all countries will have to play their role to combat it.

"Islam and Muslims are routinely linked to terrorism. Social media platforms are being used to fuel Islamophobia. It surged during Covid. Islamophobia remains a big challenge even today," he added.

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari calls for OIC body to ensure finance and trade equality

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto Zardari on Thursday proposed establishing a special task force of experts at the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) forum to develop a strategy to secure equal treatment in the rules and structure of international finance, trade and taxation.

“We must also demand a speedy debt restructuring for 60 financially vulnerable countries, the redistribution of unutilised SDRs (Special Drawing Rights) to developing countries, large lending by multilateral development banks, massive public-private partnership investments, sustainable infrastructure and the mobilization of the promised climate financing of US$100 billion,” he said while delivering his opening statement as Chairman of the OIC Council of Foreign Ministers (CFM) at the two-day 49th Session of the CFM in Nouakchott, Mauritania.

He said Pakistan had been hit hard by the devastating floods last summer after facing the negative impacts of COVID, inflation, economic collapse in Afghanistan, and consequences of the Ukraine war.

Third generation of Bhutto family awaits SC justice: Bilawal
PPP chairman says Zulfikar’s ‘judicial murder’ black spot on justice system

Foreign Minister and Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has termed the “judicial murder of first elected prime minister of Pakistan Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto” as a black spot on the justice system of the country, saying that now the third generation of the Bhutto family is awaiting justice from the Supreme Court.

In his message issued from the Bilawal House Media Cell on 44th martyrdom day anniversary of Shaheed Zulfikar Ali Bhutto, the PPP chairman said that the presidential reference regarding the judicial murder of the prime minister who gave the country a unanimous Constitution had been pending in the Supreme Court for the past 12 years.

“During these 4,382 days, our justice system did not have even a minute to listen to Bhutto Shaheed's plea. How many more generations of the Bhutto family will have to wait to get justice?" he asked.

Bilawal said that history had brought so many proofs in favour of Bhutto's innocence that even his worst enemies now had to say that the “Quaid-e-Awam” suffered gravest injustice.

"I appeal to the Supreme Court that the presidential reference sent by (former) president Asif Ali Zardari under Article 186 on April 2, 2011 should be fixed for early hearing."

Paying glowing tribute to the “Quaid-e-Awam”, Bilawal said that under the prudent leadership of Bhutto, Pakistan crossed many milestones in political, diplomatic, economic, defense and social terms.

"Raising the political consciousness among the people, giving the country's first unanimous Constitution, making agricultural and economic reforms, starting the nuclear programme, establishing Pakistan-China friendship and making Pakistan the diplomatic capital of the Islamic world are a few examples of Bhutto Shaheed’s achievements," he pointed out.

Bilawal says not in favour of a ban on any political party

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has said that he is not in favour of banning any political party and he will be the last person to agree to such a decision.

Responding to a query at the presser, the minister said that it was imperative for PTI to maintain its status as a political party and not transform into a group that supports terrorism. “This would help prevent any need for the party to be banned.”

He stated that if the PTI decided to engage in an armed rebellion against the state, then it may become necessary for the government to ban the party. He, however, expressed hope that the government would not head in that direction.

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto urged the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Thursday to end the "violent" protests that erupted following party chief Imran Khan's arrest two days ago.

Addressing a press conference in Karachi, the PPP chief advised the PTI "not to make matters worse" terming the protests "completely unjustified".

"It is violent and has created a scenario that has necessitated some serious conversations," the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) chairman said, adding that "those involved [in violence] will be held accountable".

Nonetheless, Bilawal urged the PTI to refrain from making "matters worse [and] call for an end to violent protests and declare that you will abide by the rule of law and Constitution."

"Accept that you will engage with the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) as citizens, not terrorists,” he said.

Bilawal also stressed that he was "principally opposed to the banning of any political party", but in the same breath said that "such decisions are made in view of the circumstances".

"If such a decision is taken," he continued, "it would be taken because there would be no other choice left."

"Any organisation would have had to face the music after the terrorist activities carried out yesterday," he furthered.

"I think the events show that extreme restraint was shown not only by the Pakistani state but also the Pakistan Army," said Bilawal, as he stressed that if a general's house would be invaded or the headquarters of the armed forces attacked in any other country they would be met with "straight fire immediately".

He said that the government "in the moment, did not respond violently," which he believed "speaks to the transition that we are in at the moment".

Bilawal maintained that if the PTI was interested in remaining a political party, it would have called for peaceful protests.

"They have to decide for themselves if they are interested in doing politics, or have they taken up an armed resistance against the state of Pakistan," the minister said.

He also said that the PPP was always against the National Accountability Bureau (NAB), and ideologically believed it should be shut down.

"The Charter of Democracy included the closure of NAB from 2008 to 2013," said Bilawal, "Imran Khan set that aside and started a campaign to save NAB."

“When Nawaz Sharif came to power, we asked them again as opposition and adopted the stance that the NAB law should be amended and reformed, but to no avail,” he lamented.

“But the PTI kept defending the NAB for as long as PPP opposed it,” he stressed.

"If politicians are arrested then it is the political sphere that suffers. We [the PPP] are never the ones to celebrate such an event," he added.

But, Bilawal also noted that the allegations levelled against the PTI chief were "severe".

The foreign minister maintained that the PTI, in its protests, had "crossed the line" and asserted that it was the responsibility of the state and its institutions to implement law and order under the Constitution.

He also said his party was committed to holding elections "on time".

Bilawal also expressed his disappointment with the outcome of the dialogue between political parties.

"I was hopeful that our dialogue would be successful [...] that we would find a political solution," he regretted, saying that the parties had failed to build consensus "due to many reasons".

"Even today we want that elections are held and that they are held on time," said Bilawal, stressing that the government must remain mindful that the prevailing political crisis does not negatively impact democracy in Pakistan.

Last chance for PTI to decide if it is a political party or a terrorist organisation: Bilawal

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari has said that PTI has the “last chance” to decide if it was a political party or a terrorist organisation.

Addressing the joint session of the Parliament, he castigated the party and former prime minister Imran Khan for the violence that ensued across the country following the PTI chief’s arrest on May 9.

“How can Imran talk about the rule of law when he himself is urging his followers to do such things,” the PPP chairman asked.

Foreign Minister Bilawal Bhutto-Zardari on Monday stated that any talks or negotiations with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) will not take place unless the party tenders an apology for the torching of Jinnah House in Lahore.

In an unprecedented show of vandalism last week, PTI supporters had attacked and caused damage to the historic Corps' Commander’s House — originally known as Jinnah House and which once served as the residence of the founding father of the nation, Quaid-e-Azam Muhammad Ali Jinnah — hours after the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) arrested PTI chief Imran Khan in the Al-Qadir Trust corruption case on Tuesday.

Pictures and videos from the historic building showed that all the rooms, halls, drawing rooms, living rooms, walls, curtains, doors, wooden ceilings, and even the floor had been burnt by the protestors.

The 130-year-old building of the Military Engineering Services, a few furlongs away from Corps' Commander House, was also set on fire, where valuable records, furniture, and vehicles were set ablaze.

Condemning the violent attacks in the National Assembly today, Bilawal said the incidents were unprecedented in the history of Pakistan. He said that these incidents will be remembered for a long time to come.

Bilawal called for the institutions to work within their constitutional ambit so that the government could concentrate on resolving the issues of the poor people.

In 1986, he said, over three million people gave a warm welcome to former prime minister Benazir Bhutto despite former president General Ziaul Haq being in power in Islamabad at the time.

"Benazir Bhutto did not use the occasion to incite violence against Ziaul Haq. The PPP has faced various incidents over the years but has refrained to resort to acts of violence," he added.

The PPP chairman accused Imran Khan of being involved in putting opposition leaders, including PML-N Senior Vice President Maryam Nawaz and PPP leader Faryal Talpur, behind bars.

"Despite Talpur’s illness, doctors were pressured to hand her over to Imran Khan, who then allegedly changed the hospital’s medical superintendent and put Talpur in jail," he claimed.

Bilawal went on to say that PPP did not oppose the elections, as they believed that Imran Khan could be challenged through a fair election, and that the ruling coalition would contest and defeat him.

He said that the incumbent coalition government candidates had already defeated PTI chief and its candidates in several by-elections. The coalition was committed to protect the Parliament and Constitution, he concluded.
