The PTI government on Thursday announced the appointment of retired Brig Ijaz Shah as Interior Minister — a portfolio earlier held by Prime Minister Imran Khan himself — amidst a major reshuffle of the federal cabinet.

Last month, Brig Shah was appointed as the federal minister for parliamentary affairs — a post that has now gone to Azam Swati in the reshuffle. Prior to his appointment as the minister for parliamentary affairs, reports were circulating that Prime Minister Khan was considering appointing Brig Shah as his national security adviser (NSA).

Brig Shah is currently a PTI member of the National Assembly from the constituency of NA-118, Nankana Sahib-II.

Shah is known to have experience of tackling the threat posed by militant organisations.

Brig Ijaz Shah's appointment to the key position of Interior Minister is likely to stir political controversy. Brig Shah remained a trusted aide of former president retired Gen Pervez Musharraf and served as director general of the Intelligence Bureau (IB) from 2004 to 2008. He was accused of using the IB for political victimisation.

Former prime minister and PPP chairperson Benazir Bhutto had named him in a letter as someone who should be investigated if she was assassinated. She suspected him to be conspiring to eliminate her.

PPP leader Palwasha Khan, talking to reporters earlier this month, said that Brig Shah was the one who worked for Gen Musharraf and “had links with Al Qaeda and Taliban”. Ms Bhutto, she recalled, had “nominated him as her possible assassin”.

As the home secretary of Punjab, Brig Shah was accused of midwifing the formation of the PML-Q and PPP-Patriots.

Omar Saeed Sheikh, who masterminded the kidnapping of Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl, had surrendered through Brig Shah.

Gen Musharraf had named Brig Shah as high commissioner to Australia, but Canberra refused to accept his nomination, forcing the government to withdraw it.

Thank you Imran for destroying this country.

Just for the sake of becoming the PM and getting powers, this guy has destroyed the democracy of this country.

Can you explain in words rather than PMLN manifesto terms, how this appointment has destroyed the very fabric of democracy in our country?

Amidst all the noise, people have actually ignored the fact that the higher powers have sacked Imran from Interior Ministry as well.

google into this guys past and you will get the answer

Back in 2018 Hussain Haqqani stated how the army had perfected the art of a non-coup coup. This decision by Imran is an example of it.

How can you call something a "Fact" without providing a hard evidence ?

Its more like a hunch at max.

People bash MQM for the way they do polictics in karachi. And then you bring this criminal as an interior minister, how is he any different from the people that pti fans bash on.

And the statement by Hussain Haqqani becomes an automatic truth, right ?

My apologies. Kaptaan willingly stepped aside and gave the ministry to a retired military officer and a former ISI spy because he found himself incompetent.

On a serious note, the military decided to give the interior ministry to their own man because they were not happy with his performance. non-funded terrorists started to reassert their power in KP and Balochistan, and the security situation has deteriorated in Karachi as well.

The overall law and order situation in the country is deplorable at the moment, and before things get out of hand, the military have decided to take control of the interior ministry.

again, go read the colorful past of ijaz shah. forget hussain haqqani.

ok, I will do that.

In the meantime, you can read the colorful past of two other major parties in Pakistan i.e PML-N and PPP

You can go around make threads on them

The moment you start criticising PPP dumb decisions, I will stop mentioning them in PTI threads.

Imran, what are you doing? Giving Interior Ministry to a murderer.

Might as well give it to Rana Sanaullah then.

Another day, another low for PTI and their supporters. They are getting humiliated left right, but this is what they deserve.

Naya Pakistan is turning out to be the biggest charade, the biggest scam in Pakistan’s political history.

Millions of people have been fooled and taken for a ride.

As if serving in ISI/IB is a crime . Traitors along with loot khasoot group have issues with the appointment of an experienced competent person but they were all too happy with Rehman Malik and Nisar because they were supposedly 'jhamoori'. Nice to see them crying in naya Pakistan. As for the article in OP, it's typical Dawn with he said she said stories devoid of alternate perspective.

What Pakistani people will do now?
They select a Champion Kaptaan but unfortunately, kaptaan is incompetent and his friends are also incompetent and corrupt.

Another PPP or PMLN government coming????

Is it real?
Pakistan peace is again got disturbed in the province of KPK and Karachi City?

oh wait Rehman Malik and Ch Nisar as Interior Ministers saved the country and poor Ijaz Shah with far more experience is gonna destroy it. Rehman Malik and Ch Nisar were found sitting in GHQ most of the time when they were in charge of this ministry.

Remind me exactly how Rehman Malik (PPP) helped the extension of COAS Kayani? And how Ch Nisar (PMLN) arranged SS and NS secret meetings with Raheel Sharif. They were their for this purpose?

This is stupidity of their narrative.

No, more than that it's an eye opener for everyone. People thought it were stories but now we have seen who the real bosses are in this country.

Even I thought "Khalai Mahklooq" slogans were excuses from Nawaz, but now realize how handicapped these guys get after some time.

The real bosses are the lenders and they have us over the barrel because when you borrow $60bn, you lose control. From all reports the IMF wanted him out.

But Asad Umar always said that they were close to struck a deal? Either Lagarde spoke to IK or the army understood that this is going nowhere and their budget would suffer.

This is just lefty hollering. The sky is falling everytime. As for the PTM, it would be nice if they carried a few Pakistani flags to their rallies that they hold in previous no go areas that have been cleaned up by the army

But but but Rahman Malik and Ch. Nisar are not from the evil army so that automatically nullifies corruption and incompetency. :P

Honestly speaking Rehman malik was the biggest joker from the party of clowns. I dont know why peoples have this short term memory that they forget what a liar he was.
It is my personal opinion that interior minister should be someone who should have an idea that what is going behind the scene so someone who was part of intelligence institution can be a better choice.
Since we do not have a culture of trained & professional ministers on their respective ministries and its a trend to gift core seats to close companions whether they are capable, so in this case an elected retired army men is better than duffer outspoken liar like rehman malik.

People here are over reacting. In America we've had many ex military officers as secretaries of important departments, most of these fobs opposing this appointment know nothing about the guy but the moment they hear he's a retired brigadier they lose their mind. These people would probably freak out if they learned that Mike Pompeo was previously the head of the cia and that Pres Eisenhower used to be a General and army chief.

What went wrong in KP & Karachi, specially in Karachi as I live in this city so I should be aware of the security conditions.

oh bhai, stop comparing US politics with Pakistani politics.

Both are different. One political system has the Military and spy agencies working under the govt and actually respects it, while the other political system has the govt and military fighting for control and where the military doesnt respect the control that the govt might try to enfroce on them

You are calling us Fobs. Please do bother to read the history of our politics. For us, your a FOB.

You don't understand, the militaries in every country are the real ones in control. In most countries they're on the same page, in Pakistan the Sharifs and Bhuttos were security threats kinda like how Trump is right now and they're trying to remove him or how the British establishment sees Corbyn as a threat and have even talked about a possible coup if he became elected. The warrior class have always been in control of nations since the dawn of time, from the first empire to modern nation states. You guys are just too naive and not well read on history.

no trump is not threat. US politics doesnt revolve around 1 individual president, they have a system in place.

Dont worry, we are well read about our history and of our recent events.

DOnt need some American who doesn't know about our politics make judgements that we dont know about our own political history :)

So you are telling us that 'marica is a dictatorship?

I don't use your semantics. It's not a dictatorship, it's just that every country has an order that has to be kept in place in function, if you read my comment carefully then you'd understand that every country has a deep state that maintains it's interests and doesn't let anybody elected or not get in the way of national interests.

I don't know if you're acting naive on pupose or you're really that dumb. Trump is considered a threat in America, the whole media machine has been railing against him and congress and many important people behind the scenes want him removed because he's been compromised, he's believed to be a Russian stooge much like how Nawaz was widely believed to be an Indian stooge. If your leaders like Bilawal or Nawaz faced the scrutiny by the media and military that Trump is facing then you'd be crying "conspiracy" and that it's a "coup". Fact is, no country will compromise its national interests and democracy isn't the holy grail.

again, American politics doesnt revolve around 1 person. They have a system in place that curtails the power of that 1 person, and allows the country to continue working

You're completely missing my point. I'm not talking about one person, I'm talking about an order, a state in place to remove anybody that compromises any individual that is harmful for national interests, in our case it's Trump and in Pakistan's it was Sharif. Also just like America, Pakistan also different branches of government in place for checks and balances, so educate yourself before talking trash.

That one person has veto over everything that gets decided in Congress. Only a judge can overpower a president.

Ijaz Shah
Serves in '71 war
Serves as Director ISI Punjab
Serves as DGIB

But he is a criminal according to armchair experts here.
If he's a criminal we must be Sicilian mafia. Oh wait.

Imran Khan was failing as an Interior Minister so I am happy that someone else will look after this job.

I wonder if this is because we're about to see a crackdown on certain elements within the country and the gov't wants to insulate itself from the blowback by putting a hardliner to be the face of it. Anyway it is going to be a tough and interesting rest of 2019 for Pakistan. Honestly, it isn't until 3rd/4th quarter of 2020 to see the effects of this gov't policies taking effect. Governments don't make changes or have effects in 8 months or even a year. As an example let me share the Trump led Republican Tax law change that was passed in 2017 (his first year in office), it is now (2019) that it is starting to have an effect on taxpayers. People need to calm down and get on with their lives.
