Head coaches confirm Quaid-e-Azam Trophy squads

Karachi, 21 October 2020:

From white-ball cricket in Multan and Rawalpindi under the Covid-19 protocols, action moves to Karachi when the red-ball first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy commences on Sunday, 25 October. On Wednesday, the six head coaches announced their squads, which will include all the top performers who will not be involved in the series against Zimbabwe, which kicks off in Rawalpindi on Friday, 30 October.

With a 35-member Pakistan men’s national and Shaheens squads to depart for New Zealand on 23 November, the players will get good three rounds of quality four-day cricket that will not only enable the players to strengthen claims in the touring party but will also provide them an excellent opportunity to rediscover their form ahead of a challenging tour.

Defending champions Central Punjab have received a major boost as their coach Shahid Anwar named top-order batsman Ahmed Shehzad and fast bowler Hasan Ali in the 16-player squad. The side, to be led by Azhar Ali, will go head to head against Sarfaraz Ahmed’s Sindh at the National Stadium from 25 October.

Sindh coach Basit Ali has kept faith in 20-year-old left-arm fast bowler Ghulam Mudassar after picking him from the Second XI side to provide him a chance in the First XI National T20 Cup. Ghulam will join seasoned pace duo of Sohail Khan and Tabish Khan as Sindh will aim to improve their last year’s fifth position.

Balochistan head coach Faisal Iqbal has followed in the footsteps of Basit by providing 17-year-old Quetta-born batsman Abdul Wahid Bangalzai with an opportunity to show his temperament, stamina and technique in the longer version of the game. After an impressive performance in the Second XI National T20 Cup, Abdul Wahid was included in the First XI National T20 Cup.

Balochistan, which finished at the bottom of the table last year, will be led by Yasir Shah, while Quetta-born wicketkeeper-batsman Bismillah Khan will be his deputy.

Fast bowler Akif Javed has not been included in the squad as he is currently recovering from the knee injury he sustained during the National T20 Cup

Abdul Razzaq has handed captaincy responsibilities of the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa side to Ashfaq Ahmed, who was his side’s highest run-getter in the 2019-event with 805 runs at over 67. Adil Amin has been named as vice-captain in the side, which also include Imran Khan Snr, Junaid Khan, Sahibzada Farhan and Usman Khan Shinwari from the squad that lifted the National T20 Cup in Rawalpindi last weekend.

Northern, who were last year’s runners-up, will continue to be led by Nauman Ali, who was the highest wicket-taker in the edition with 54 scalps in 10 matches. Mohammad Wasim, the Northern head coach, has named 23-year-old former Pakistan U19 batsman Zeeshan Malik as his deputy.

Abdul Rehman has named a strong Southern Punjab side, which will be captained by Test opener Shan Masood. Salman Ali Agha, after leading Southern Punjab in the Second XI Quaid-e-Azam Trophy first round, has been named in the first-class squad as part of the selectors’ overarching policy and strategy of encouraging and rewarding high-performing players.

Fast bowler Rahat Ali is unavailable for the first three rounds of the tournament due to family commitments.

Meanwhile, the six squads and their support staff will be undergoing Covid-19 tests in Karachi on Wednesday and Thursday, and all those with two negative results will enter a bio-secure bubble.

The teams will practice on Friday and Saturday at the three venues (National Stadium, UBL Sports Complex and NBP Sports Complex) staging the opening round matches from Sunday, 25 October.

Head coaches aim for player development in Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

• As per Covid-19 protocols for the 2019-20 season, respected members of the media can only attend and cover matches at the National Stadium. Detailed 15 September media advisory to this effect is available here, while key media guidelines are reproduced below

Karachi, 21 October 2020:

Playing exciting, hard and competitive cricket is in the minds of the six head coaches as Pakistan gears up to stage the four-day first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy after successfully delivering the National T20 Cup during the Covid-19 times.

The six head coaches, after selecting strong and balanced squads, have now shifted their attention to on-field action, hoping they will be able to create an environment and culture that will contribute in the overall uplifting of Pakistan’s domestic cricket.

Apart from winning the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, the jewel in the crown of Pakistan’s domestic season, the coaches are also committed to contribute in the overall player development so that they can play their part in narrowing the gap with international cricket.

Balochistan head coach Faisal Iqbal: “I am pleased with the squad we have chosen, the concept of First and Second XIs is all about player development and exposure. I have seen this model work very well in England and I am sure it will reap rewards in Pakistan in due course.

“Our long term plan is to develop players from Balochistan and to give exposure to as many players from the province as possible.

“I have given roles to the players and have spoken to them in detail about the expectations from them, the seniors and players from other regions who are representing the side will be expected to share their experience, knowledge and comfort the young and upcoming players especially the young talent from Balochistan like Abdul Wahid Bangalzai.

“We played the National T20 Cup with the same mindset and I am hopeful that with a balanced squad we can both groom players for future and do very well in the most prestigious first-class tournament in the country.”

Central Punjab head coach Shahid Anwar: “We groomed a lot of young players in the National T20 Cup, the likes of Abdullah Shafiq, Qasim Akram, Irfan Khan and Sohaibullah. We want to carry the same mindset in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, of course with a mindset of winning the tournament as we are the defending champions.

“Our foremost objective would be to play positive cricket and retain the trophy and we will work very hard in that regard.

“While a lot of our players are representing Pakistan in the Zimbabwe series and are unavailable at least in the first few rounds, we are still confident of delivering the goods. Ahmed Shehzad is back in our fold while Hasan Ali is also making a comeback.

“Azhar will be leading the side, so we have some top-class and richly experienced players returning while we have also picked performers from Second XI. We are really looking forward to an exciting season of four-day cricket.”

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa head coach Abdul Razzaq: “We have tried to cover all bases considering the pitches and conditions in Karachi. We have a good combination of established senior players and some upcoming junior players. I think my players to watch out for would be Mohammad Mohsin, Sameen Gul and Sajid Khan who did very well last season.

“The brand of cricket we played in the National T20 Cup, we would like to play the same brand in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy. Our aim is to groom players who can represent Pakistan in Test cricket in the years ahead. We have prepared well and will spend the next few days further polishing our skills before the start of tournament’s first-round.”

Northern head coach Mohammad Wasim: “We have good combination of senior and junior players; we will be providing a lot of chances to the young players especially since a lot of our frontline players will be playing for Pakistan in the ongoing season, while there are a few who would make the Shaheens side that also has a tour planned this season.

“This means, that a lot of young and new players who didn’t get many opportunities last season would be playing and showcasing theirs skills in the four-day format.

“One of our aims would be to play aggressive and attacking cricket and maintain the kind of strike-rates we had last season, this mindset is in line with modern day cricket requirements where a fast scoring pace is maintained in Test match cricket.”

Sindh head coach Basit Ali: “We qualified for the semi-finals of the National T20 Cup and while the four-day format is entirely different to T20, we still have the quality and depth in our squad to do well.

“We have Asad Shafiq and Fawad Alam in the squad who are part of the Test side. Mohammad Hasnain is serving the national team, in Saud Shakeel and Omair Bin Yousaf we have two quality young players who are ready to go to the next level.

“Likewise, we have very good young players in the Second XI who will provide back-up to the seniors, we have started well in the Second XI competition and I will be keenly monitoring the performances of the players in that competition and utilise the services of the players as and when needed.

“We will work very hard on our fitness and fielding as these are the two areas we need to improve on. They were not up to the mark in the National T20 Cup as a lot of players were coming back after a long Covid-19 induced break.”

Southern Punjab head coach Abdur Rehman: “Southern Punjab is fully prepared and ready for the first-class competition. We have selected a good bunch of senior and junior players and I really like the combination we have been able to create.

“Our batsmen like Shan Masood, Zeeshan Ashraf, Hussain Talat, Saif Badar and Imran Rafiq are capable performers and we expect them to do very well for us.

“We have got good all-rounders and a potent bowling combination which includes Mohammad Abbas, Zahid Mahmood and Mohammad Irfan (Left-Arm-Spinner). We have picked Dilbar Hussain from the Second XI as we feel he has the potential to do well in the first-class format.

“I am confident that our team will deliver the goods in the tournament and we will also succeed in grooming a few players for international cricket.”

Why is Shadab not playing in the 4 day matches?

The two Punjab teams look the strongest. Sindh have a very strong FC batting lineup but the question is whether they can take 20 wickets.

KPK have a good pace attack but batting will depend heavily on Ashfaq Ahmed. No Mohammed Haris which makes me wonder if he'll be touring with Pakistan A in New Zealand.

I'll be shocked if Northern reach the final again with that squad, while Balochistan will struggle with no Haris Sohail and Imam-ul-Haq.

Also, no Akif Javed for Balochistan which is seriously disappointing as it could mean his knee injury is worse than suspected.

Unless he'll be touring with Pakistan A in New Zealand.

No for now missing names are in squad against Zimbabwe...Naseem Shah is a worry as i believe he is still injured.

So looks like players which are selected for Zimbabwe series and will later in the month be going with Pakistan and Shaheens’ squad are not included.

Zimbabwe tour is going to end on Nov 10th and then PSL 2020 playoffs are going to take place. Pakistan is supposed to travel to NZ at the end of November and possibly have a local camp before that. So max some national players could have done is to squeeze in a match or two in QAE.

So looks like we have an idea of the pace attack which will be there in Shaheen’s squad and also that Zafar Gohar is going to NZ as well. I think Zeeshan Malik, Ehsan Adil and Sameen Gul had a case too but, I think as they are not involved in the Zim series or the PSL playoffs they were available for more matches. However, will have to wait and see till the probables for NZ are finalized.

As per sources (From few days ago)

Younis said that an MRI conducted on the 17-year-old revealed that he would be needing treatment.

"Though there is nothing serious but Naseem would be needing treatment and rehabilitation so he is doubtful for Zimbabwe series. It would be unfair to risk him in the series," Younis said.

Regarding Hasan Ali:

When asked about fast bowler Hasan Ali, who also is nursing his stress injury, the bowling coach said the pacer was having a speedy recovery and will be seen in action during the forthcoming first-class season.

“He would be playing first-class cricket this season. I think he may be seen in action in early stages of the first-class cricket," he said.

Makes sense as no point in risking Naseem for 2-3 FC matches as well. So looks like if Hasan Ali can show fitness he might be flying to NZ as well.

That's why I was against this lame 3 weeks t 20 ourney could have played atleast 3 rounds of FC games givin much needed practice to test prospects

Could have included Danis and Arshad Iqbal....I don't think they will go to Nz with Saheens

Danish might get a call up for Shaheen's T20 side but could have easily played 4 day cricket before that but, looks like couldnt made it to the squad.

Disappointing squads, lacking big names, but that was to be expected because of the Zimbabwe series.

Which players missed out on the first xI from the second xI?

I think with the Zimbabwe series and the New Zealand series all the squads are weaker southern punjab look good

So the first class squads have taken into consideration of the Intl series against ZIM and NZ. Okay, but some of the names there are just not good enough.

The 2 punjab teams are the strongest on paper followed by Sindh.

But the quality and names are not as good as in the national t20 cup.

So much for reducing the no. of teams.

22 people are missing from these 6 teams. That’s enough people for 2 more XIs.

Imagine these 22 names missing, and the names from the above 6 teams are spread even further into 20 teams.

When Shaheen will tour to NZ?

Same time as senior team, matches will start around mid December but both Shaheens & senior team will leave in last week of November.

They will start with FC games while National team will be playing T20Is at that time, so good chance for a player or two to impress against NZ A and book a spot in the Senior team

Reflecting on the revamped Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2019-20

• Central Punjab were crowned champions with a dominant performance in the final, Northern were the losing finalists

• 77 centuries and 26 five-wicket hauls recorded in the 31-match tournament

Karachi, 22 October 2020:

Following a highly successful white-ball National T20 Cup, which concluded on 18 October, attention now moves to first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, which commences in Karachi on Sunday, 25 October. The white-ball event was held under Covid-19 protocols, which were planned, delivered and implemented by the PCB staff, including officials from the medical, high performance and security departments.

The inaugural six-team first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2019-20 tournament, under the revamped structure, was full of excitement and competitive cricket, which produced absorbing and thrilling four-day cricket that captured the imagination of all stakeholders and fans alike.

After years of the ball dominating the bat on bowler-friendly pitches, the PCB decided to improve the quality of the pitches in order to make them sporting while proving equal chance to both batsmen and bowlers, especially spinners.

The international class Kookaburra balls were used in the 31-match season that was spread over three-and-a-half months and played across the country. In addition to this, 10 matches were live-streamed on the PCB YouTube Channel for the first time, while the five-day match was broadcast live by the then PCB’s media rights partner.

Quetta returned to the domestic cricket fold as matches were staged at the Bugti Stadium after 11 long years. The final-leg (last two rounds and the five-day final) were staged in Karachi to ensure completion of matches without weather interruption, a practice that had been successfully carried out in the last few years.

Babar Azam-led Central Punjab won the tournament by defeating the youthful Northern side by an innings and 16 runs in the final held at the Karachi’s National Stadium.

The second edition of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy first-class tournament (2020-21) under the hugely competitive and quality-oriented domestic system gets underway across three Karachi venues –National Stadium, UBL Sports Complex and NBP Sports Complex on Sunday 25 October.

Central Punjab would start the tournament as favourites to retain the title; some of the highlights of the 2019-20 season are reproduced below.

Batting achievements in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2019-20:

A total of three batsmen crossed the 900-run mark in the season. Balochistan’s Imran Butt topped the batting charts with a tally of 934 runs at 62.26 in 17 innings. The right-hander posted four centuries with a highest of 214.

Central Punjab’s seasoned wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal scored 906 runs in 15 innings at 60.40, his tally of runs included three centuries with a best of 166.

Central Punjab opener Salman Butt was third on the list with a tally of 901 runs in 15 innings at 75.08; the left-hander hit three centuries including a best of 237.

A total of 77 centuries were scored by 46 different batsmen from the six Cricket Association teams.

Sindh’s Abid Ali posted the highest score of the tournament; the right-hander hit 249 not out in his team’s first-round match against Balochistan at the UBL Sports Complex, Karachi. A total of eight double centuries were hit during the tournament.

The 500-run mark in an innings was passed no less than 11 times during the tournament, Central Punjab posted the highest team total of the 2019-20 edition when they piled on 675 for eight declared against Northern in their only innings of the final.

The highest partnership of the 2019-20 season was the 358-run second-wicket partnership between Zeeshan Malik and Umar Amin for Northern against Southern Punjab at Sialkot’s Jinnah Stadium.

Bowling achievements in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2019-20:

While batsmen dominated the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2019-20 season, there were a number of match-winning bowling performances which challenged the batsmen and made the tournament a compelling watch. A total of 26 five-wicket (innings) and three ten-wicket (match) hauls were recorded during the tournament.

Central Punjab’s Zafar Gohar’s 11 wickets for 133 runs against Northern were the best match figures of the tournament while Nauman Ali’s eight wickets for 71 runs against Central Punjab were the best figures in an innings.

Northern’s Nauman who captained his side in the lead-up and in the final was the tournament’s leading wicket-taker with 54 wickets in 10 matches at 25.38. The left-arm spinner took five wickets in an innings a total of five times.

Off-spinner Bilal Asif who represented Central Punjab took 43 wickets in nine matches at 23.16; he took a total of two five-wicket hauls.

Zafar took 38 wickets in his 11 appearances for Central Punjab at 36.76 with one five-wicket haul.

Amongst fast bowlers Sindh’s Tabish Khan was the leading wicket-taker with 25 wickets in 10 matches which made him occupy the sixth-spot on the bowlers list.

Fielding and Wicketkeeping numbers:

Imran Butt who took 16 catches in the tournament topped the fielders’ list. Northern’s Umar Amin took nine catches while his teammate Ali Sarfaraz, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Israrullah and Sindh’s Khurram Manzoor took seven catches each.

Kamran was involved in 41 dismissals behind the stumps (38 catches and three stumpings) followed by his brother Adnan Akmal who represented Southern Punjab (33 dismissals, 30 catches, three stumpings). Sindh captain Sarfaraz Ahmed was involved in 26 dismissals (25 catches, one stumping).

When Shaheen will tour to NZ?

They will travel with the main team around late Nov - Early Dec. Below is the schedule of their matches.

Which players missed out on the first xI from the second xI?

I think maybe Zia Ul Haq could have been picked over Bilawal Bhatti in SP. Zia would have provided variety with left arm angle and decent height as Ilyas along with Yamin offer the same height as well like Bhatti considering where the ball comes from. Yes Bilawal has more pace but its not tear away pace and his consistency has been a problem.

Mohammed Nawaz not getting selected in the main XI for Northern is a bit surprising. While he hasn’t been setting up the domestic circuit on fire recently, he could have provided that spin bowling all rounder option which Northern is lacking with the absence of Shadab and Northern has only two spin bowling options. Nasir Nawaz who is a young batting all rounder who bowls seam is selected over him which I dont mind but now Northern has two pace bowling all rounders with Hammad Azam being the main choice and then Nasir Nawaz.

Other than that maybe we can say that Arshad Iqbal missed or Azam Khan and Danish Aziz missed but cant pin point a particular player in the squad instead of whom they should have been selected as teams have to consider their combinations as well.

There are quite a few good young players in 2nd XI QAE as well and if they perform well they can get a call up.

PCB tweaks points system to encourage positive cricket in Quaid-e-Azam Trophy

• Side refusing to continue the match will be suspended for 12 months and will have their contracts terminated

Karachi, 23 October 2020:

To encourage the six Cricket Association sides to play an attacking and positive brand of cricket, the Pakistan Cricket Board has introduced a result-oriented points system in the PCB Paying Conditions for the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, which commences from Sunday, 25 October.

The 31-match tournament will be played across four Karachi venues, including the National Stadium, which will stage the five-day final from 1-5 January 2021.

To encourage the batsmen to increase their strike-rates, the PCB, in a major switch, has decided to reward five batting points to sides who will reach the 400-run mark inside 100 overs in the first innings.

According to the amended playing conditions, bonus batting points will be awarded as follows (first innings only):

• 200 runs inside 100 overs – 1 point
• 250 runs inside 100 overs – 2 points
• 300 runs inside 100 overs – 3 points
• 350 runs inside 100 overs – 4 points
• 400 runs inside 100 overs – 5 points

On the other side of the coin, the PCB has introduced a two-fold bowling points system.

The over-based points system is as follows:

• Three wickets inside 100 overs – 1 point
• Six wickets inside 100 overs – 2 points
• Eight wickets inside 100 overs – 3 points

Additional all-out bonus points will be allocated as follows:

• 200 runs or less inside 100 overs – three points
• Between 201 and 250 runs inside 100 overs– two points
• Between 251 and 300 runs inside 100 overs – one point

To further elaborate and simplify the allocation of points, if Team A bowls out Team B for 175 runs in 90 overs, then Team A will pocket three points for collecting eight wickets inside 100 overs and another three points for restricting their opponents to inside 200 runs. In contrast, Team B will remain pointless for being unable to achieve the minimum threshold of 200 runs inside 100 overs.

Similarly, if Team C scores 275 for nine in 100 overs against Team D, then Team D will collect three bowling points for claiming eight wickets but will be unable to add an additional point for their failure to grab the last wicket. In contrast, Team C will get two bonus points for cross the 250-run mark inside 100 overs.

Meanwhile, the PCB has also amended certain playing conditions. The key changes are.

Clause 16.2 (d) shall now read as:

In case of a walk over or if a team refuses to play, following penalties shall be imposed.

1. The match shall stop there and then and will not be restarted
2. The Playing XI and the officials of the defaulting team shall be banned for 12 months (it will be a global ban)
3. All central contracts of that team will be cancelled
4. The team can still play the event with replaced players/officials
5. The points scored during that match will be nullified
6. The opponents to be awarded maximum points

Clause 1.2.8 deals with the scenario of a like-by-like replacement of a player who has tested positive for Covid-19

Clause 1.2.7 deals with concussion replacement

The PCB Playing Conditions for Quaid-e-Azam Trophy 2020-21 are available here, while the PCB Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel is sitting under PCB Codes and Rules here.

Saad Nasim is back.... and as vice captain
So, when Azhar Ali goes for national duty, he will be captain again.
:facepalm

And Saad Nasim

Saad Nasim is the biggest parchi ever

Again VC :)))

Such a major parchi. After 163 first class innings he has a grand total of only 6 hundreds and an average of 29.9!. And yet he not only makes the first XI, but is also named vice captain. It really pays to be friends with Azhar Ali and from Model Town cricket club.

Six Cricket Associations begin their Quaid-e-Azam Trophy campaign from Sunday

Karachi, 24 October 2020:

After an action-packed National T20 Cup in Multan and Rawalpindi, the focus shifts to Karachi as Pakistan’s largest city gears up to host the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, a jewel in the crown of Pakistan cricket, from 25 October.

The first three rounds will be played across three venues – National Stadium, NBP Sports Complex and UBL Sports Complex – before the tournament takes an 11-day break during which the play-offs of the HBL Pakistan Super League 2020, which had to be postponed due to an outbreak of Covid-19 in the country, will be staged. Besides the three venues, State Bank Stadium will also host six matches of the 31-match tournament.

The six team captains were taken to a photo-shoot with the prestigious tournament trophy at the Quaid-e-Azam Mausoleum (Mazar-e-Quaid) on Friday. The players travelled in a sterilised bus and maintained social distancing at the location while fully following the existing Covid-19 SOPs and protocols during the shoot.

With the Pakistan’s men’s national team and Pakistan Shaheens scheduled to travel to New Zealand on 23 November, the first three rounds serve as an audition for the first-class cricketers to stake a claim in the red-ball side on the back of impressive performances.

In line with the PCB’s vision of incentivising top-performers, more than PKR17million are up for grabs over the course of the 31-match tournament with the winning prize money PKR10million and the runner-up bagging PKR5million.

The top-performers – player of the tournament, best batsman, best bowler and best wicketkeeper – will pocket PKR500,000 each. The player of the final will be awarded PKR50,000.

Defending champions Central Punjab will begin their campaign from the National Stadium, Karachi, as they take on hosts Sindh in a match which will be televised live on PTV Sports and relayed all over the world by the Pakistan Cricket Board’s official YouTube channel.

The PCB as part of its commitment to promote domestic cricket, will broadcast and stream all 11 matches, including the five-day final, from the National Stadium.

Sindh v Central Punjab, National Stadium, Karachi:

With Babar Azam leading Pakistan in the three ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League matches and as many T20Is, Azhar Ali will take charge of the defending champions Central Punjab side, which includes seasoned wicketkeeper-batsman Kamran Akmal, who finished as the second highest run-getter in the last edition of the first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy with 906 runs at 60.40.

Azhar will also have services of Test off-spinner Bilal Asif, who with 43 wickets from nine matches finished as the second highest wicket-taker in the 2019-20 edition. The side is further strengthened by the returns of Ahmed Shehzad, who captained Central Punjab last year with Babar on national duty, and pacer Hasan Ali.

After Salman Butt withdrew himself from the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, Ali Zaryab has been promoted to Central Punjab’s first XI team.

Central Punjab captain Azhar Ali: “As defending champions we aim to play with attacking mindset and strategy as it won us the trophy last year. We have some exciting youngsters and have retained the core of the side and I am really looking forward to the tournament.

“With only six teams in the fray, the competition is going to be stiff and that augurs well for the tournament as the standard will be of the highest quality with all the teams capable of winning the event.”

Sarfaraz Ahmed, the former Pakistan Test captain, will be eager to ensure that his team lives up to its potential as they were one of the two teams, other being Balochistan, who failed to register a win last season. They will be banking on Fawad Alam, who was Sindh’s best batsman last year with 781 runs (four centuries and two half-centuries) to provide stability to their batting order which also boasts Test batsman Asad Shafiq and impressive youngsters like Saud Shakeel and Omair Bin Yousaf.

Tabish Khan will spearhead Sindh’s bowling attack in which Mohammad Asghar will lead the spin department.

The left-arm orthodox had the fourth most wickets with 27 scalps in eight matches for Balochistan last year. Tabish took 25 wickets in the previous season, his new-ball partner Sohail Khan is not available for the opening clash due to a throat infection but is expected to join the team in the later rounds.

Sindh captain Sarfaraz Ahmed: “Last year we were not able to win any matches despite coming close and dominating the matches most of the days. This year we have once again fielded an experienced squad with some exciting youngsters.

“Our aim would be to push for wins and keep ourselves in the contention of a final spot. I think we should have an exciting event which should keep the fans and followers engaged.”

Northern v Southern Punjab, NBP Stadium, Karachi:

Northern, under the leadership of Nauman Ali, won three matches – all secured in their last four matches – to secure a berth in the final. Over the course of their 11-match journey, Haider Ali, who later went on to become member of the men’s national team, scored 99 on debut and followed it up with two centuries, the last one of them in the final against Central Punjab.

Despite Haider and their other young gun Rohail Nazir with the national side for the Zimbabwe series, Northern possess the desired firepower in their ranks with Zeeshan Malik, who has been handed vice-captaincy for the 2020-21 season, all-rounders Nasir Nawaz and Hammad Azam providing balance to the side which also includes batsmen Umar Amin, Faizan Riaz and Naved Malik. Their captain, Nauman, who was the highest wicket-taker last season with 54 scalps in 10 matches, leads a bowling unit comprising Sadaf Hussain, Waqas Ahmed and Tauseeq Shah.

Northern captain Nauman Ali: “We played aggressive cricket last season and made a great comeback after a slow start to earn a place in the final.

“This year too we have an exciting squad that is a good blend of youth and experience. We will be aiming to play the same result-oriented cricket with a positive approach. I am confident of my team delivering the goods and playing the tournament final. I do think that we can lift the trophy, this is an exciting time for our side in a hugely competitive tournament that will surely bring out the best from players of all six teams.”

Southern Punjab, led by Test batsman Shan Masood, will be hoping for change of fortunes after they finished without a victory in the last season. Their head coach, Abdur Rehman, has gathered a promising side, which promises to provide Shan a balanced team with equally effective batting and bowling units.

While Mohammad Irfan, slow-left arm, will spearhead the spin unit, which has talented youngster Umar Khan and leg-spinner Zahid Mahmood.

Pakistan Test pacer Mohammad Abbas will lead the bowling attack that also includes Mohammad Ilyas and Dilbar Hussain.

Umar Siddiq and wicketkeeper Zeeshan Malik are expected to provide stability to their batting order with Shan, while all-rounders Aamer Yamin and Hussain Talat will extend support to both departments with their all-round skills

Southern Punjab captain Shan Masood: “The double-league nature of the tournament means that each of the six sides have an opportunity of making a comeback. Southern Punjab have an exciting outfit and we would be aiming to play the final.

“Last season we had a good run and were in the contention for a final spot for a long time. There are six quality sides and the format of the tournament encourages quality and competitive cricket. We are looking forward to doing well and going all the way.”

Balochistan v Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, UBL Sports Complex, Karachi:

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan begin their Quaid-e-Azam Trophy campaign at the UBL Sports Complex. Balochistan, who finished at the bottom, will be led by Test leg-spinner Yasir Shah. Imran Butt, the highest run-getter of the last Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, is joined by left-handed top-order batsman Sami Aslam, who was the fourth highest run-getter with 864 runs, he represented Southern Punjab last season.

17-year-old Quetta-born Abdul Wahid Bangalzai, who graduated to the apex domestic level after impressing in the Second XI National T20 Cup, and Adnan Akmal are the other two promising additions in the batting department.

Right-arm quicks Najeebullah Achakzai, Akhtar Shah, a former Pakistan U19 bowler, and Taj Wali form the core of the pace-bowling department after an injury to Akif Javed ruled him out from the tournament.

Balochistan captain Yasir Shah: “Balochistan will enter the tournament with a positive mindset and approach. We have some exciting talent from the region like Abdul Wahid Bangalzai, who has done well in the Second XI and has now earned a deserved opportunity in our First XI.

“Last season our bowlers did well and I am impressed with the form of bowlers like Taj Wali. We would strive hard for success while keeping an eye on developing quality players both for the region and Pakistan.”

Fresh from the National T20 Cup win, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa will be looking to carry that form albeit in the absence of their star performers, who will be in Lahore at the national team’s camp for the Zimbabwe series. Ashfaq Ahmed, their highest run-getter in the last season, has been appointed captain by head coach Abdul Razzaq.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa boast an experienced pace bowling attack with the likes of Junaid Khan, Imran Khan Snr, Usman Khan Shinwari, Sameen Gul and Ahmed Jamal in the ranks, while their batting department is consolidated with the presence of top-order batsman Sahibzada Farhan, Adil Amin and wicketkeeper Rehan Afridi.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa captain Ashfaq Ahmed: “It is an honour for me to captain the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa team. We have a very capable squad that has the right blend of experience and youth.

“My aim would be to lead the team from the front and deliver both as a player and captain. I think we can progress to the final even last year we had come close to reaching the final and this season our focus would be on earning a spot in the final. I am very excited about this opportunity; we should see some exciting cricket in Karachi over the course of the next two months.”

Keeping up with its promise of bringing fans closer to high-quality domestic cricket, the Pakistan Cricket Board today announced it will produce all 11 first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy matches, including the five-day final, from the National Stadium, which will be broadcast on PTV.

Fans interested in enjoying High Definition coverage can follow the action on the PCB YouTube Channels, while SD coverage will be available PTV Sports. To avoid overlap and provide uninterrupted coverage of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, the PCB and the PTV Sports are in talks to shift the coverage to PTV National on days when international cricket between Pakistan and Zimbabwe is being played
.

On match days, coverage will commence at 9.45am – 15 minutes before the delivery of the first ball – and will conclude with a round-up show at the end of the day’s play.

The coverage for the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, jewel in the crown of Pakistan’s domestic cricket, will be done through 14 HD cameras and the broadcast will be embellished with pre- and post-play studio shows featuring high-powered expert and commentary panels.

Action in the first match at the National Stadium between Sarfaraz Ahmed-led Sindh and Azhar Ali’s Central Punjab, will be called by Bazid Khan, Sikander Bakht, Shah Faisal, Tariq Saeed and Yasir Hameed.

Over the course of the next rounds, the PCB will rotate commentators and provide opportunities to former international and first-class cricketers to commentate during the matches in a bid to help them hone their skills.

Last season, the PCB had live-streamed 10 league matches of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy, while the five-day final was televised by the then PCB’s media rights partner. This once again reflects the PCB’s commitment and drive to enhance the value and credibility of its domestic competitions.

As part of a three-year agreement with PTV Sports and I-Media Communication Services, the consortium of Tower Sports and SportzWorkz, on behalf of the PCB, had produced pictures of the highly successful National T20 Cup, which were broadcast on PTV Sports. After initial teething problems, the coverage settled down to help the fans follow live action after the event was played behind closed doors due to Covid-19 pandemic.

Broadcast fixtures (all matches at the National Stadium, which will start at 10am):

25-28 Oct – Sindh v Central Punjab

31 Oct–3 Nov – Balochistan v Southern Punjab

6-9 Nov – Central Punjab v Balochistan

20-23 Nov – Southern Punjab v Sindh

26-29 Nov – Khyber Pakhtunkhwa v Northern

2-5 Dec – Central Punjab v Sindh

8-11 Dec – Southern Punjab v Balochistan

14-17 Dec – Sindh v Northern

20-23 Dec – Khyber Pakhtunkhwa v Central Punjab

26-29 Dec – Northern v Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

1-5 Jan – Final (top two teams on points table)

What I'd request PCB to also do is provide short highlights of the two non-televised matches.

Last year the highlights consisted of a minute's worth of action where you'd no idea who was batting or bowling, played to some generic rock music.

To compare, look at how ECB produce highlights of each county match where highlights are presented in a news bulletin format with a reporter providing a voiceover.

^ This would be perfect.

That would be great but due to covid i am sure they said they wont be able to live scoring as well
