Domestic player contracts for 2020-21

PCB Chief Executive Wasim Khan briefed the BoG on the new 12-month merit-based domestic player contracts for the 2020-21 season. The new contracts will come into effect from 1 August 2020.

According to the new monthly retainer structure, the PCB will again offer 192 leading domestic players (32 from each of the six Cricket Associations) performance-based contracts, but instead of paying a flat monthly retainer of PKR50,000 to all players, this season slab-wise payments will be made.

The new monthly retainer structure is:

· Category A+ = 10 players, PKR150,000 per month

· Category A = 38 players, PKR85,000 per month

· Category B = 48 players, PKR75,000 per month

· Category C = 72 players, PKR65,000 per month

· Category D = 24 players, PKR40,000 per month

In addition to the revised monthly retainers, the players will also be paid match fees as per the following structure (in PKR):

Wasim Khan: “The PCB had repeatedly spoken about improving domestic retainers year-on-year which we are committed to doing and have backed up this year. We very much see this as the start.

“Overall, we have increased our investment by 46 per cent in our domestic contract retainers, as compared to last year. We have also created a category based retainer system that will better reward and incentivise the high-performing cricketers.

“The PCB is optimistic this model will further enhance competitiveness amongst the players, which, in turn, will contribute in the overall uplifting of our domestic cricket.

“We are likely to have all the six Cricket Association sides in place by mid-August but will continue to keep an eye on the Covid-19 situation. We will only start our 2020-21 season when the Covid-19 curve of cases starts going in the downward direction and we have the necessary permissions and SOPs in place to ensure health and safety of all concerned.”

Difficult to say how helpful these amounts will be for players but looks like a step in the right direction.

First class match fee has been reduced otherwise good job

So the best domestic players will get grade A contracts which wont include anyone playing international but will get paid per match is this correct

One can understand the financial crunch PCB is in under but I hope FC match fee are increased massively(2021-22 season)

At least 2 lacs per match to attract people to play first class

A+ is reserved for best domestic performers who haven't got a National contact

I would like the domestic match fees to be higher, the amounts are just too low in today's inflationary times. Back in the 80's and 90's a starting salary of Rs 30,000-40,000 would be equivalent to a starting salary of Rs 130,000-150,000 today. Back then a middle class guy could afford to buy property in DHA, how can someone on a salary without inheritance buy a house in DHA worth 6-7 crores.

My mamu is a phd from a top notch school in the US, he left a high paying govt job in Canada to come back to Pakistan in 2007 and it took him 12 years to finally be able to buy a house for himself in DHA Lahore and even then he had to take a loan from a family member.

What did they get 3 years ago would be go compare and contrast

It is a step in the right direction. Yes, the salary band is low but you have to start somewhere. It also clarifies the methodology of payment as this is not longer a departmental monopoly.

Great post

Players security is so important, domestic cricket needs to be financially viable

The first class amounts could be higher but overall I think its a good move and headed in the right direction. Maybe with lower fees the TTF's will retire and allow the youngsters some opportunities.

Overall a good move. Disappointed to see match fees decreasing, and would have been nice to have the lowest contract remain at 50,000.

Things like that are what makes boards make the decisions they make, the compromises they make.

Pride is all good but as this shows, a board's primary and most crucuai job is to generate enough money to sustain its cricketing infrastructure and support involved players and staff financially down to the grassroot level.

It's wasy for us people online to blast the boards and expect them to show pride and pick up fights with bullies but that's bot how the world runs in real life.

It applies to all.

It all depends how much a player makes TOTAL in a year respective to their categories. A+ category player can make 3.2 million rupees a year assuming they play 10 games each per year. It's not bad money for domestic earnings.

At all levels of contracts, the earnings (contract + match fees) combined are good enough for a player to focus on his cricket year round.
