PCB Asks Misbah Ul Haq to Continue as Skipper for Australia Tour

Karachi: The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has asked long-serving Test captain, Misbah-ul-Haq to lead the national team till the tour of Australia after which it would look into appointing his successor.

According to a reliable source in the board, Misbah was asked to continue as captain until the series in Australia when he met with PCB Chairman, Shaharyar Khan before the team left for England in June.

"The meeting took place before the team left for England and in it the future of Misbah was discussed and it was agreed he should remain in charge until Australia series," the source said.

Misbah, 43, has indicated in recent times that he was contemplating a retirement from all international cricket.

He had also planned to retire last year but the PCB requested him to carry on for another year or so due to the important series facing Pakistan.

"After the meeting what has become clear is that Misbah wouldn't carry on for long and the PCB must start looking for a successor after the Australia series with input from head coach, Mickey Arthur," the source said.

He said Azhar Ali, who was presently the national one-day captain, wasn't a popular choice to replace Misbah.

The senior batsman had faced the prospect of being removed as the ODI captain during the series in England but was able to get a lifeline after Pakistan won the last ODI in England and head coach, Arthur also advised the PCB to give him some more time to assess the true ability of Azhar's captainship skills.

"Misbah told Khan in the meeting that he wouldn't be able to carry on for long regardless of the results in the test series this year so the board has also mentally now prepared to start the search for a new captain soon," the source said.

The source said senior batsman, Younis Khan who was also 38, could be a stop-gap arrangement next year for the test matches until the PCB groomed a Test captain for a long-term basis.

Misbah will lead Pakistan for the 50th time during the first Test with New Zealand in Christchurch which didn't begin on Thursday due to bad weather.

Misbah, who has led Pakistan in Test matches since late 2010, has himself said he wanted to play a full series against India before a final retirement from all international cricket something which does not seem possible for a while now given the existing relations between the two countries.

The 43-year old has already retired from ODIs after last year's World Cup in Australia and New Zealand.

Not sure why this is being reported as its old news?

Guess YK and Azhar Ali bit new there

Duh.

Only interesting bit is the succession plan. Azhar was a certified replacement but his poor captaincy in ODIs has harmed his chances.

Sarfraz is in next line but maybe they don't want to burden him so much. T20I captain, ODI vice-captain (could soon be captain) and WK in all 3 formats.

Younis as a stop gap sounds like a disaster to me. He is controversy magnet and he has always pulled a drama when he has been offered captaincy or when he has been at the job itself.

His personality is such that he cannot get along with his players when he is the captain. His ego is massive and he gets offended very easily. The oath-takers were no angels, but it says a lot about your leadership skills when you lose half of the dressing room within 9 months of taking over as captain.

PCB needs to handle this carefully - we have had no such controversy for a long time now and we need to continue along that path.

I would say give it to Azhar.

so i dont understand, by giving the captaincy to Younis for 1-2 years, in that period some other captain will appear mysteriously?

This is soo absurd.

Eventually, either Azhar Ali or Asad SHafiq would be made test captain, so make them now.

Expected, nothing new here.

What is bothering though is the 'search for successor after the Aus series' bit. You the 'pcb' should have been doing this long ago. They should have already identified who is to be the next skipper as we knew Misbah will be off soon anyway! Brainless pcb I can't think of Aus or Eng doing this. It's what separates us I'm afraid. Lack of planning

I hioe misbah stays till april to guide us to a first series win in the windies!

Sarfraz should take over. I don't see it as any burden, he is neither a kid, nor will he have to carry weights, lol.

I would say give it to Azhar.

Azhar the Test captain will be like an inferior version of Misbah. He is from the same school of thought.

After 6 years, Pakistan needs a fresh direction and a new style of captaincy.

I would drop Sarfraz from T20Is and make him Test captain. Rizwan should replace him as the WK in T20Is and Imad Wasim should be T20I captain.

Interesting bit about Azhar/YK.

Good stuff to reconsider Azhar's position, but YK as a stop-gap is not the way to go.

Either Sarfraz/Shafiq should be trusted. If Sarfraz can hundle the burden of T20I/Test captaincy as well as being the WK in all formats, then excellent. Otherwise, as Mamoon suggested, Rizwan should be trusted in T20s with the gloves and Imad can be the captain.

Problem with Shafiq is that he barely has any leadership experience.

I'm inclined towards Sarfraz. He debuted late and should therefore be ready to take all the burden, at least for now, until we groom Babar.

It's pretty clear that Azhar will be the next Test captain

People can whine as much as they want to
