PCB completes first phase of Covid-19 vaccination for players and support staff

Lahore, 7 May 2021:

Pakistan Cricket Board has successfully completed the first phase of its Covid-19 vaccination drive in collaboration with Pakistan government’s National Command and Operation Centre (NCOC).

During this phase, Pakistan’s leading cricketers across all three formats and support staff were vaccinated.

The PCB takes pride in being one of the first cricket boards in the world to provide a robust vaccination programme to ensure the health and safety of its players and support staff in the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic.

In the first phase, 57 men players, 13 officials of the men’s team and 13 NHPC men and women coaches were vaccinated. A number of franchise players and support staff besides PCB match officials involved in the February-March phase of the HBL Pakistan Super League (three match referees, three umpires) were also vaccinated.

The vaccination drive started on 4 March in Karachi and carried on for more than two months, before its conclusion on 6 May when eight players – part of Pakistan’s squad for the ongoing Test series against Zimbabwe – were given second doses in Harare.

In the next phase, remaining domestic men cricketers, national women cricketers, age-group cricketers and support staff of the domestic, national women and age-group teams will be vaccinated. The second-phase is expected to commence shortly.

PCB Chief Operating Officer Salman Naseer: “The PCB has a duty of care towards its cricketers, especially in the ongoing pandemic, and keeping that in mind we requested the NCOC for vaccines during the HBL Pakistan Super League 6. The vaccination drive started in Karachi and our first priority was to get the players and support staff involved in the tournament vaccinated.

“After the initial round of vaccination in Karachi, we focused on getting the remaining members of the men’s squad, who were not involved in the HBL PSL 6, vaccinated before the tours of South Africa and Zimbabwe.

“We remain grateful to the NCOC for recognising the importance of vaccines for our players and prioritising them for national interest as both players and support staff are constantly traveling for domestic and international cricket commitments and carry infection risks especially once outside the bio-secure bubbles.

“The PCB is fully behind the government’s vaccination drive and once again urges people across Pakistan to get vaccinated in order to ensure the health and safety of their own selves and their families.

“Our players – both men and women – and PCB management will continue to provide full support and backing to the NCOC vaccine awareness initiatives as they have done repeatedly since the outbreak of the pandemic last year.”

The vaccine doesn't work against the new variants....I really do hope this doesn't mean they start slacking which has been the general consensus once you get vaccinated.

Do some research.
Also get ready for vaccins each and every year.

Done plenty. I work in the NHS.

No vaccine is 100% effective and against the new variants the vaccines still prevent severe disease and hospitalisation.

Yearly? Don't compare the Influenza virus to the Coronavirus. They mutate far quicker than coronaviruses plus its normal for immunity to wane and last around a year.

Which is why Flu is seasonal.

Which Vaccine are the players getting?

Strange to see vaccines being administered the day before a test match. Perhaps the pcb didn’t know there can be temporary side effects that kick in the next day and might not be ideal during a test match?

That is very odd.

Thankfully Pakistan are batting first so most of the players will be off the match.

all the major vaccines work against pretty much all the variants except the brazil variant but even then there's some protection.

Only Covishield shots for Indian cricketers bound for UK tour – Here's why!

Indian cricketers, bound for the tour of England, are likely to take the Covishield vaccine in India before their departure. They will get the second shot of the vaccine in the UK.

After a premature end to the Indian Premier League (IPL) Season 14, the Indian cricketers have a few weeks of stay with their family members before the long tour of England begins with the World Test Championship final from mid-June. The vaccination of these players is one subject that has been talked about a lot, especially considering the amount of travel they do. It has now been reported that the players will likely take Covishield shots ahead of their UK departure.

With the Indian government opening vaccinations for everyone above the age of 18, the Indian cricketers also came in the bracket. It was earlier reported that the players will get vaccinated during the IPL but the suspension of the second half of the campaign saw that plan being disrupted.

With all the players out of the bubble that was created by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) for the IPL, they would have to get vaccinated individually in their respective localities. Though it has been advised that the players should only get Covishield vaccine.

Such a suggestion has come as the cricketers bound for the World Test Championship and the Test series against England will be leaving for the United Kingdom soon and will not have time to get the second shot of the vaccine before their departure. Since Covihield is based on Oxford-the AstraZeneca vaccine (a UK product) they can get the second shot during the England series.

"It is advised that they take Covishield in India because it is based on the AstraZeneca vaccine, a UK product. They may get the second shot in UK. Getting a different vaccine here is of no use," a source was quoted as saying by the Times of India.

Good that players are being vaccinated but the Sinopharm vaccine gives pretty bad muscle aches, fatigue, eye irritation and malaise that may last upto 5 6 days. So the timing is pretty weird considering they are playing a test.

The Indian players are taking Covishield.

That’s the AstraZeneca vaccine that I was given in Australia.

It’s only 62% effective, and only 6-8% effective against the South African variant.

If Pfizer and Moderna are Rolls Royce vaccines, and Johnson and Johnson is a Ford, the vaccine that the Indians are being given is a rickshaw and the one that the Pakistanis are being given is the bicycle without the rickshaw.

The majority of people in the UK have been given AstraZeneca and here, cases have nosedived. It seems pretty effective to me.
