Pakistan should remember Gadaffi by keeping his legacy alive via the naming of a cricket stadium? That is the harsh reality of this world , once you leave this world you will no longer get remembered even if you were insanely popular in your times.
This is way more than I had imagined. If so good job by the pcb.The deal is for $750,000 ie Rs 200 million per year for the next 5 years similar to the deal for National Bank Stadium in Karachi. The PCB has created a revenue stream of $1.5 million per annum for the next 5 years.
Job well done. Need to do this for other stadiums as well.
After seeing the drainage system at Gaddafi Stadium we can simply arrange a swimming competition to declare a winner... no need for the DLS method here.Raining in Lahore ...

Why to name the stadium after a useless corrupt power hungry women just because she was killed, unfortunately. Already there are too many hospitals, roads and other places and even a city named after her, not good. They will rename it shaheed benazir Bilawal zardari bhutto shareef stadium.

Don't you know any difference between IK and pateecher politicians like Bilalwal and NS, what's their crickteting background ?I think no place in Pakistan should be renamed after any politician of modern times like imran, bilawal, nawaz etc.
Should be the names of actual heroes who did something for Pakistan like Abdul Sattar Edhi etc.
Yeah, I know pretty well. IK is a great cricketer as well so his name will make sense but people will make controversy out of it as well due to political affiliation. That is why I said no politician.Don't you know any difference between IK and pateecher politicians like Bilalwal and NS, what's their crickteting background ?
Its a pretty good deal. Hopefully some of this money can be used to upgrade these prehistoric stadiums too. Karachi and Lahore are being renovated which is good. But Faisalabad and Rawalpindi need alot of work too. They still feel like stadiums that were created for the 1996 CWC.The deal is for $750,000 ie Rs 200 million per year for the next 5 years similar to the deal for National Bank Stadium in Karachi. Pindi is also getting a full blown renovation. Its a pretty good deal. Hopefully some of this money can be used to upgrade these prehistoric stadiums too. Most of all though I am glad that they are finally renaming Gadaffi Stadium, Lahore.
This is why the media rights deal number that the journalist you mentioned in the other thread has quoted seems very off the mark. The deal is for $750,000 ie Rs 200 million per year for the next 5 years similar to the deal for National Bank Stadium in Karachi. The PCB has created a revenue stream of $1.5 million per annum for the next 5 years.

That comes to about USD 3.5 million over 5 years. As per reports:
The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has secured a five-year naming rights deal worth one billion rupees for Gaddafi Stadium Lahore with a Punjab-based bank. This agreement marks a significant increase from the 450 million rupees secured for the naming rights of National Stadium Karachi over the same duration in 2022.
The naming rights agreement is part of the PCB's strategy to offset expenses incurred in upgrading stadiums in Karachi, Lahore, and Rawalpindi ahead of the Champions Trophy. The PCB had issued a tender for the naming rights of Gaddafi Stadium Lahore, and the successful bid from the Punjab-based bank will result in the stadium being renamed after the bank. This approach is in line with global practices, where many cricket venues in Australia and England are named after sponsors.
Under the leadership of Chairman Mohsin Naqvi, the PCB is exploring various revenue-enhancing strategies, including sponsorship deals for additional stadiums. The current administration aims to bring substantial benefits to the PCB through these initiatives. With the naming rights contract for Gaddafi Stadium Lahore setting a new benchmark, the PCB is expected to pursue similar deals in the future to boost revenue sources and support the growth of domestic cricket.
Yes, stadium names in all over the World are changing mainly with the sponsors' name. Emirates Stadium, Etihad Stadium in England are a couple of examples. We will eventually see a name change for the Gaddafi stadium as well.Gaddafi stadium was a strong name and a lot of history behind it.
But this is the future.
They will sell everything that is sellable.
It should be named back to its original name lahore stadium.
Who gave the traitor bhutto responsible for 1971 the authority to name it after a colnel gaddafi .
What the hell does lahore and the stadium have anything to do with colnel gaddafi and libya ?
It has nothing to do with Zionists or whether he was a "good" or "bad" guy. The fact is, Gaddafi has nothing to do with Pakistan. Naming your premier cricket stadium after him is as absurd as naming it Hosni Mubarak Cricket Stadium or Hafez al-Assad Cricket Stadium. It’s utterly stupid and makes no sense to name such a significant venue after an Arab dictator just because he gave a speech in Lahore decades ago.No one should be in favour of this, imagine changing from Gaddafi Stadium to Brighto Paints Stadium, just because the Zionists told us he’s a “bad guy”.

While you are right. The name now has historical nostalgic value attached to it.It has nothing to do with Zionists or whether he was a "good" or "bad" guy. Absolutely, it should be named after Pakistani legendary cricketer. May be 2 Ws stadium or after Imran KhanIf they want to change the name, maybe they should name it Imran Khan Cricket Stadium or Wasim Akram Cricket Stadium.
I'd rather have it named after Abdul Sattar Edhi ie the biggest philanthropist of Pakistan who saved thousands of lives during his lifetime and whose organization is continuing to do the good work. If anything, it will give the listeners to know about that guy and what he did for humanity. If they want to change the name, maybe they should name it Imran Khan Cricket Stadium or Wasim Akram Cricket Stadium.

Yes but it will help put more eyes on Edhi Trust which will hopefully lead to more donations and more help for the needy. And Edhi is an unsung hero of humanity and one of the best Pakistanis. Not a bad idea.
But, since this is a cricket stadium, it makes sense to name it after a cricketer.

Naming it after Wasim wouldn't do anything other than giving Wasim another honor which he has aplenty.
Edhi was a great person but doesn't make sense to name a sports stadium after him. I know its not going to happen but it should be Imran Khan stadium . But to avoid any controversy it should be named only as Lahore Cricket stadium , don't have to be named after any person.I'd rather have it named after Abdul Sattar Edhi ie the biggest philanthropist of Pakistan who saved thousands of lives during his lifetime and whose organization is continuing to do the good work. Which Wasim Akram ? the one who was convicted in a matching fixing case by Justice Qayyum ? and who helped Indian fast bowlers but never a Pakistani fast bowler ?? I won't take name of Imran Khan and Wasim Akram in the same breath. If they want to change the name, maybe they should name it Imran Khan Cricket Stadium or Wasim Akram Cricket Stadium.
Why not name it after some deceased Pakistani great like Hanif Mohammad?Which Wasim Akram ? the one who was convicted in a matching fixing case by Justice Qayyum ? and who helped Indian fast bowlers but never a Pakistani fast bowler ?? I won't take name of Imran Khan and Wasim Akram in the same breath.

His get up is like a religious man but this " sahrif aadmi" was also named in the Justice Qayyum report for match fixing and then he had to resign from the chief selector's job because he was director of a UK-based company called Yazoo International Ltd and was selecting players based upon their contract with his company .How about Inzamam-ul-Haq Cricket Stadium? He seems like a shareef guy. Also, he was a World Cup hero in 1992 WC.
A few other options would be Javed Miandad, Younis Khan, Waqar Younis etc.
The Punjab cabinet turned down a request to rename the stadium yesterday. The Bank of Punjab had bought the naming rights. While you are right. The name now has historical nostalgic value attached to it.
If they must change it then only money can trump this.
My point was regarding Edhi is that we all know Pakistan is moving along only due to the activities of philanthropists and charity workers. If govt were to become a little selfless, then better to put more eyes on the biggest charity of Pakistan which is helping hundreds of people daily. It will only help promote his charity as more people will get to know about him.Edhi was a great person but doesn't make sense to name a sports stadium after him. I know its not going to happen but it should be Imran Khan stadium . But to avoid any controversy it should be named only as Lahore Cricket stadium , don't have to be named after any person.
It's all relative isn't it.It is exceedingly embarrassing.
When my friends (English) ask me why is it called the Gaddafi stadium and I explain it was named after the former Libyan leader, there is a moment of incredulity, followed by a sense that I am joking with them, then a slow dawning that I am serious.
I think if Pakistan wants to be taken seriously on the world stage perhaps renaming this could be tiny step along the way.
Call me old fashioned, but having one of the main stadiums in the country named after a corrupt Arab dictator is not a good look.
It is exceedingly embarrassing.

If that’s how you feel in front of your friends, you are not old fashioned; just unaware. Read up on Gaddafi so that instead of feeling embarrassed, you can answer your friends appropriately. It is exceedingly embarrassing.

The most illogical post on this thread. Emirates and Etihad bought their right to name the stadium, which is a common practice all over the world. How much a dead and buried dictator paying PCB to keep the stadium after his name ?It's all relative isn't it.
Your white English friends probably don't mind that major stadia in England are named after the company's of corrupt Arab dictators.
From a naming perspective is there really much of a difference between the Gaddafi stadium and the Emirates or Etihad stadium?
How is it illogical? His white friends have issue with the stadium being named after a dictator not the lack of payment. If Gaddafi had paid the PCB would they (and you) be ok with it?The most illogical post on this thread. Actually its called Arun Jaitley Stadium now, not Feroz Shah Kotla.Reality is it will always remain the Gaddafi stadium no matter what new changes are brought in.
Sometimes with history names just stick and remain.
Nobody in India knows or cares who Wankhede, Chinnaswamy or Feroz Shah Tughlaq was but their names are now pair bonded with their stadiums for better or worse.
The one and only really cool name for stadiums across subcontinent is Eden Gardens. God knows how it escaped being named after any politico.
Yep.. Would you like the name TAPAL TEA STADIUM... Nope... Gaddafi is historical and PCB should not do any tweaks here.I think Gaddafi Stadium sound cool and give it a royal feel. Brighto Paint Stadium or Lahore Stadium would just whip out that aura.
