We all know how horrible PIA is when it comes to service and efficiency, which lacks them both.

A victim of the bloated bureaucracy that affects every single state-owned business in Pakistan, something needs to be done to improve the airline's ability to be relevant.

So PP'ers, do you support the privatization of the airline and let go potentially thousands of workers that yield little use to the airline's operations and service?

Personally, I'm all for it. Whatever it takes to improve the airline, perhaps I'll have no problem flying PIA again instead of Emirates.

How can you stand Emirates and its horrendous 3-4-3 Y configuration? PIA for all its flaws is still 3-3-3 aft.

This is the single biggest turnoff when I fly abroad (unfortunately most of the times on EK) and I hate it.

That doesn't bother me as much honestly. The service provided by Emirates is top-notch.

The 3-4-3 is horrible in 777's, on the 380s is better

BA still has 3-3-3 on its 777's as does Qatar on its 777-200's (the 777 er's are being converted to 3-4-3).

It makes a huge difference on the 14+ hour flights to North America, not if you are 5'5" or a slight build, but if you are a normal height/weight, it does...

In countries without full rule of law, privatization is often just a transfer of money from state employees to well-connected businessmen/politicians

Privatise. Full public auction. Sell to the highest bidder, Pakistani or non-Pakistani (ideally a joint venture).
Let market forces dictate efficiency, quality of service, routes and price point.

it is simply not sustainable as a govt entity at the moment, has to be privatized.

How is the food service on PIA i mean quality quantity and taste wise? I very much used to prefer Air India food compared to other airlines.

Both the PPP and PML are corrupt to the core and the PIA is the clearest manifestation of this plunder. The Airline is loaded with sifarshis, who who have either been rewarded for loyalty or paid corrupt politicians for a job which they see as as cash cow. You always go on about how good the Nooras are, well shouldnt they hold an investigation into who has been hired by who and then make them personally liable for their criminal actions.

Emirates takes care of its passenger well. If any problem arises in transit, I'll trust Emirates to resolve a solution.

Russian airline aeroflot is horrible. They do nothing!!!! Most don't even know English.

PIA needs a massive uplift, but it is probably not possible because of all the political appointments made and four people working on one job.

On another note, I hate long international flights and am specially envious of girls who can sit alti palti bandh ke on their seats and I'm just there trying to find any crucial inch to fit my feet/knees. I prefer a flight with two layovers rather than one 16 hour jaunt.

Out of all disadvantages, that's one advantage that thin and short people has. I can sleep with my legs on the seat (thoda alti palti and adjustment).

The problem I think stems from heavy costs from over staffing and unnecessary offices. By privatization, government just wants to shift the responsibility of that cost reduction to the private sector. Even after privatization, there is no way any improvements will occur without staff reduction.

In a nutshell government is trying to take the easy way out by selling a national asset. What a great solution by noon league's 'tajurbeykar' team.

Don't know about Pakistan, but in india, most gov officials are incompetent. They doesn't want to do work, they doesn't know how to work, they doesn't want to learn how to work.

Working with them is an headache.

give people Job security, they will get lazy no matter which country of the world you are in!

Serving the same chicken biryani since 1946, although I haven't travelled with PIA since 2010.

I totally support this decision. PIA has to be privatized.

I hope they keep pensions and benefits of the crew and engineers though as they were the least ********. I think it is unfair if the pilots flew for the airline for 20-30 years only to have their pensions taken away.

Somewhere I read that PIA has most number of employees per aircraft in whole world. Close to 200 people per flying machine... that number itself is mind blowing. How will a company turn profitable if costs are so high??

A lot of the "employed" people are just on the payroll and they work somewhere else but get a salary from PIA aswell. This is what happens when you have political parties influencing the hiring process.

PIA might be even worse than airlines of Sudan or Mozambique..

I stand corrected.....actual situation is even more worse. 18014 employees for a fleet size of 40, comes to around 450 employees per air craft. No private institution will even touch PIA, unless given free hand in firing of people.

Sell it before you have to sell other things to keep this white elephant running.

Airlines business is a complicated, high tech and super service oriented business with cut throat competition which requires a lot of innovation. Clearly govts of our region are inapt of handling such a complex operations.

Its better to sell it to someone who can run it better, provides jobs, and revenue to the govt instead of letting it become a bottomless well which consumes tax money to stay alive.

There was a show today in which PMLN representative said that PIA will be privatized because it's not government's job to run airline, host asked if it's your job to run trains/buses then as you are building metros? NO ANSWER! PMLN is saying that they are unable to run airline and we can't afford to spend billions on subsidies when we can spend it on health, education etc. Host then reminded PMLN that you want to concentrate on health & education but then why you diverted funds allocated for dozens of health/education projects to metro train??? Off course no answer from TAJARBAY KAAR GOVERNMENT.

Russian airline aeroflot is horrible. They do nothing!!!! Most don't even know English.
Should they? Would you expect the staff on American, or Indian, airlines to speak Russian?

I hope they keep pensions and benefits of the crew and engineers though as they were the least ********. I think it is unfair if the pilots flew for the airline for 20-30 years only to have their pensions taken away.
If they were paying pension contributions into a pension pot then the pension pot should be/would be separately administered and have nothing to do with the new owners if the airline is sold off. Otherwise, over time as more employees retire or are made redundant, the pensions being paid out will be greater than the revenue generated by the airline!

If selling is an issue then at least sell the controlling stake of the airlines. Sell 51% or more to an existing airline

I never understood why people support privatization, its worse than plunder and looting and the highest form of corruption there is.

Not just PIA but all other public companies are revenue streams for the gov. By selling it off you are selling major state asset for a bargain. These buyers will only fix the company and increase revenue 100x.

The arabs have been so successful in last 15 years running public companies, because:
- They are serious about them and want them run as proper companies
- They want to compete in the global market with the west
- They steal and hire all of the best workforce in the west
- They have proper experience management in place

Now the companies our gov. runs is the total opposite
- We dont care about management, and will install incompetent and inexperience staff at the top
- We dont care about the global markets, PIA will only be there to serve direct flights to Pakistan and as its not challenged on these routes, management can neglect the service.
- We will give our friends and families jobs there, if there isnt any available we will create a new job

The problem is that our gov. does not have a single well run company, if we create one, it will be a model for ours and wake the gov. up.

Its not rocket science, all the gov. has to do is keep there nose's out of it, they are stakeholders but act like management.

All they need to do is attract a great CEO from aboard to come in and fix PIA, its as simple as that, create a board and let them over look the company.

Improve management and that shouldnt take long for the "experienced" PML and PIA should at least break even. If privatised then new management will get rid of more half of the work force with the other half working longer with less benefits. The reason govt cant install some decent managers is purely because of corruption, maybe the Nooras can explain why this corruption exists, after all at the centre and in Punjab they are the govt, whats stopping them?

all well and good, but that isn't a solution to the problem.

all well and good, but that isn't a solution to the problem.

Yes it is, Corruption is not a natural phenomenon. Start off by getting rid of the people hired by politicians, charge the politicians with corruption and then strip them of the assets they have illegally gained. Hire professional managers and i guarantee you would have an efficient airline which would at least break even. The Nooras blame the PPP and they blame you but as we know both are crooked and have used patronage to run every institution they have ever laid their grubby little hands onto into the grounds. Look at PSM, another institution run into the ground by both, can the Nooras really claim they cant run steel mills profitably? afterall they run their own pretty well.

I support the privatization of PIA that's the only way we can get rid of these political sifarshis.

ISLAMABAD: After failing to privatise the ailing national flag carrier, the government is set to miss the mid-April deadline for carving out core business of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) due to delay in finalisation of administrative and financial arrangements.

It is also reluctant to take an estimated Rs250-billion hit on its books, which is the value of legacy loans and non-guaranteed liabilities, said sources in the privatisation ministry.

Bilawal Bhutto warns PM Abbasi on privatisation of PIA, Pakistan Steel
So far, no revenue stream had been indicated to settle these liabilities after their parking in ‘bad PIA’, they added.

With only five weeks left before expiry of the validity period set out in the PIA Conversion Act 2016 for separating its core and non-core businesses, the government is yet to come up with a workable business plan to divide the air carrier’s business into two.

Federal Minister for Privatisation Daniyal Aziz is eager to do the job within the stipulated timeline, but so far he has not been able to bring all stakeholders on the same page.

Aziz chaired a high-level meeting on Thursday of the Aviation Division, Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), Ministry of Finance, PIA and the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) for drawing up a restructuring plan.

The participants could not agree on the financial restructuring plan as the finance ministry was reluctant to take a hit of Rs250 billion to Rs300 billion, according to a government official.

As per the proposed plan, the government will have to take over Rs225 billion to Rs250 billion worth of bad loans of PIA, said the official.

“This bad money has to be parked somewhere, but we do not know the revenue stream that can gradually lessen this burden from the finance ministry’s shoulders,” said the officials.

In addition to that, the finance ministry is also expected to take responsibility of Rs18 billion worth of annual financing cost of PIA loans.

Against these liabilities, the government will have non-core assets that have not been assessed yet.

Moreover, the position of financial adviser has also been vacant since the contract of previous adviser expired.

The privatisation ministry has not got fresh evaluation done of the non-essential real estate assets. According to the 2015 valuation, Roosevelt Hotel in New York and Hotel Scribe in Paris are estimated to be worth over $600 million.

“It was proposed in the meeting that non-essential assets including Roosevelt, Hotel Scribe, domestic and foreign properties and the Precision Engineering Complex will be kept by the government,” said a statement issued by the privatisation ministry after the meeting.

It added that the airline would achieve a positive balance sheet after the transfer of legacy liabilities from PIA, which would enhance its operational and structural outlook.

But the finance ministry was not willing to agree to that until it was given assurances about the final treatment of legacy liabilities of over Rs250 billion, said the sources.

“The April 15 deadline appears to be too tight and given the complexity of the issue, PIA cannot be divided into two entities,” another official said.

“During the validity period and subject to a prior company request, the federal government may issue orders for the transfer of specified assets to a relevant entity on the terms set forth in the relevant arrangement,” said Section 4 of the PIA Conversion Act.

If the government failed to separate PIA’s core and non-core assets under the PIA’s special law, the Companies Act 2017 would be applied, which was a very long process, said the officials.

PWD accountability: After document submission, Senate panel ends review

In that scenario, the court would be involved for approval and implementation of the Scheme of Arrangement, said the officials. This may take a minimum of six months to one year.

The government has already missed many deadlines that it gave to the International Monetary Fund (IMF) to privatise the ailing airline.

The privatisation ministry’s statement emphasised that there would be no impact on PIA employees and they would continue to perform their duties as they were performing now.

This is the single biggest turnoff when I fly abroad (unfortunately most of the times on EK) and I hate it.

The 3-4-3 in Emirates is perfectly ok for flights up to 6-8 hours duration. I have never felt any difficulty.
It could be problematic for the 55 hour flights to the US/Canada though, particularly if the plane is full.

Heroin recovered from PIA flight attendant at Paris airport

PARIS: Airport authorities recovered contraband from the possession of a Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight attendant in the French capital, Paris, ARY News reported on Saturday.

Upon suspicion, the authorities began search of the PIA flight, PK-750, after its arrival at the airport from Islamabad via Milan.

During a thorough search, a large quantity of heroin worth millions of rupees was seized from the possession of the flight attendant, Gulzar Tanveer.

Afterwards, French officials began a probe into the matter after taking him into custody.

A PIA spokesperson said the flight steward has been suspended over recovery of contraband from his possession.

He would be fired if he was found guilty of smuggling contraband by a court of law, the official said.

It merits mention here that in Mary 2017, 20 kilograms of heroin was recovered from a London-bound flight of the national flag carrier at Islamabad airport.

A vigilance team of the PIA had seized drugs from flight PK-785 during a routine search.

Two stewards of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) detained in the French capital last week in connection with their involvement in drug smuggling have been sentenced to two years in prison each by a French court, it emerged on Thursday.

Flight Steward Tanveer Gulzar was arrested by French customs after four packets of drugs were recovered from hidden pockets of his coat during a body search at Paris's Charles de Gaulle Airport. Steward Amir Moeen was detained after police interrogated Gulzar.

Investigators had presented the two stewards before a court in France, which handed down a two-year prison sentence to each of them after finding them guilty of smuggling drugs on Islamabad-Paris flight PK-749, sources in the airlines told DawnNewsTV.

When contacted, PIA spokesman Mashood Tajwar told Dawn.com that airlines officials are aware of the reports of sentencing, but they are awaiting a copy of the court verdict.

Once the judgment has been received, the stewards — who had been suspended — will be dismissed from service, Tajwar said.

French authorities had arrested Moeen from his hotel on Gulzar's tip. According to sources, he had allegedly facilitated Gulzar in smuggling the drugs.

According to reports, Gulzar was carrying four packets of heroin weighing one kilogramme each, worth at least Rs40 million. However, the airlines' spokesman had told Dawn at the time that French officials had not informed PIA management about the kind and quantity of drugs

Sources told DawnNewsTV that the aviation secretary has written to PIA CEO Musharraf Rasool Cyan, asking him to submit a report after assigning responsibility on officials involved in the incident and those found to have shown negligence.

Pay PIA debt, get Steel Mill for free, this is the new deal by PMLN :))

ISLAMABAD: Adviser to Prime Minister on Financial Affairs Miftah Ismail has offered to give the Pakistan Steel Mills for free to the investor who agrees to buy the loss-making Pakistan International Airlines.

“I don’t know if there will be a buyer after the next elections but I hope there is one and we should try and sell this PIA,” he said while speaking at a seminar in Islamabad on Thursday.

“I would do an offer whoever buys the PIA, I will give them Pakistan Steel for free,” he offered.

“Seriously I will take all the liabilities and I will give Pakistan Steel for free. Why should we own Pakistan Steel? They make only one million tons of steel and I think in Pakistan we import 20 to 30 million tons of steel. Why should we own Pakistan Steel Mills?”

“Every month you guy pay Rs400 million for salary to workers who don’t come to work,” he maintained.

Later, speaking on SAMAA’s current affairs show ‘Nadeem Malik Live’, Miftah defended his government’s plans to privatize the national flag carrier, saying it is incurring an annual loss of Rs40 billion.

“We cannot restructure the PIA. If we had the ability to do it, we would not have come to this point,” Ismail said.

“The PIA has become a burden on the nation kitty. The total loss incurred by the national airlines this year alone stands at Rs40 billion,” said the finance adviser. “We can spend this money on hospitals and education institutions,” he said.

He lamented that both the PPP and the PTI had opposed the privatization of the PIA despite the fact it was part of their manifesto. “When the Sindh government objected to our privatization plan, we offered to hand over the operations of the mills at one rupee only. But they did not reply to our offer.”

Reacting to Miftah’s offer, Imran Ismail, a PTI leader, said that Nawaz Sharif was a steel tycoon and yet the PSM was facing losses while Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi runs his own airline but PIA was a mess.

PPP leader Nabil Gabol expressed a fear that the upcoming general elections won’t be held on time.

Pia needs to be privatised... no doubt about that. Years of meddling and overstaffing has caused it be unsalvageable unless they get rid of most of the workforce.

Neither. PIA needs to sell of their assets (whatever junk they have left) to some other airlines like Airblue or whoever the other largest competitor is.

Both need to be privatized but are they Mr. Ismail's personal property that he is giving them for free? Stupid Nooras will even sell the whole country if they got the chance.

3-4-3 is a pretty standard configuration now...at least for all US airlines. Unless you're on those tiny planes that go from Detroit to Chicago or NYC to Phili they have a 3-1 or 2-2 configuration.

Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar has issued directives to expedite the privatisation of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) and the outsourcing of airports’ operations.

In a meeting with the adviser on aviation, retired air marshal Farhat Hussain, on Tuesday, the PM emphasised transparency during the privatisation process.

PM Kakar said the privatisation of state-owned enterprises was a priority for his government to save the national exchequer from further financial losses.

The country’s aviation industry has an immense potential for growth through investment, the caretaker PM said as he called for expedited outsourcing of airport operations to improve services.

Assures Unicef of support in implementation of welfare projects

The aviation adviser briefed the PM about his ministry’s performance and the reforms undertaken.

Unicef delegation meets PM

Later, during a meeting with the Unicef representative in Pakistan, Abdullah Fadil, the PM assured him of the caretaker government’s full support for launching public welfare projects in Pakistan.

“The government will provide all possible facilities to Unicef for launching welfare projects in education, health and other sectors,” the PM said.

The Unicef representative apprised the prime minister about projects worth around $1 billion initiated by the Unicef Pakistan body during the last five years.

These projects have been implemented in a range of fields, including humanitarian aid, clean drinking water, food supply, education and health.

The delay in privatisation of Pakistan International Airline (PIA) has put pressure on the administrative affairs of national carrier as nine aircraft have been grounded, ARY News reported.

Sources privy to the development said that out of 31 planes in the fleet, nine aircraft have been grounded due to the non-availability of spare parts. The grounded aircraft includes five Airbus-320, three Boeing-777 and one ATR craft.

Uncertainty persisted about the future of the national airline as it is mostly relying on the State Bank of Pakistan, sources claimed, adding that leasing companies have termed Pakistan’s CCC rating against business policies.

The other two airlines also came under operational pressure due to negative ratings and lack of foreign exchange reserves. The PIA still owes more than $10 million in international payments.

Sources added that leasing and spare parts companies were charging a risk exposure premium on payments.

Earlier on January 10, Caretaker Prime Minister Anwaarul Haq Kakar directed the authorities concerned to expedite the privatization process of PIA, the national flag career.

In a meeting with his Adviser on Aviation Air Marshal (retd) Farhat Hussain, the prime minister emphasized ensuring transparency in the process of privatization.

PM Kakar said privatization of state-owned enterprises was on priority for the government to save the national exchequer from further financial losses.

Financial adviser appointed by the government for the privatisation of the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), has submitted a comprehensive plan, containing an investment roadmap for ntional-flag carrier as well as the its immediate funding requirements.

According to a statement from the Privatisation, a meeting of the Privatization Commission, attended by the financial adviser, Ernst & Young, was held at the ministry, chaired by Caretaker Privatisation Minister Fawad Hasan Fawad.

During the meeting, the business plan -- covering the investment roadmap for PIA as well as the airline's immediate funding requirements was discussed. The proposed plan also covers the capital and fleet needs of the airline in the short- and medium-term in order to make it globally competitive.

On the occasion, the minister directed for the review of the estimates before submitting the plan to the federal cabinet for approval.

The caretaker government is making binding plans for the new set-up to sell loss-making Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), according to the privatisation minister and other officials.

In the past, elected governments have shied away from undertaking unpopular reforms, including the sale of the flag carrier. But Pakistan, in deep economic crisis, agreed in June to overhaul loss-making state-owned enterprises under a deal with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) for a $3 billion bailout.

The government decided to privatise PIA just weeks after signing the IMF agreement.

The caretaker administration, which took office in August to oversee the Feb 8 election, was empowered by the outgoing Parliament to take any steps needed to meet the budgetary targets agreed with the IMF.

“Our job is 98 per cent done,” Privatisation Minister Fawad Hasan Fawad told Reuters when asked about the plan to sell the airline. “The remaining 2pc is just to bring it on an excel sheet after the cabinet approves it.”

Fawad said the plan, drawn up by transaction adviser Ernst & Young, will be presented to the federal cabinet for approval before the tenure of the administration ends following the election.

The cabinet will also decide whether to sell the stake by tender or through a government-to-government deal, Fawad said.

“What we have done in just four months is what past governments have been trying to do for over a decade,” Fawad said. “There is no looking back,” he said.

Details of the privatisation process have not been previously reported.

PIA had liabilities of Rs785bn ($2.81bn) and accumulated losses of Rs713bn as of June last year. Its CEO has said losses in 2023 were likely to be Rs112bn.

Progress on the privatisation will be a key issue if the next government goes back to the IMF once the current bailout programme expires in March.

Caretaker Finance Minister Shamshad Akhtar told reporters last year that Pakistan would have to remain in IMF programmes after the expiry.

Two sources close to the process told Reuters that a 51pc stake with full management control would be offered to buyers after parking the airline’s debts in a separate entity, under the 1,100 page report from Ernst & Young.

Reuters could not independently confirm the contents of the report. Fawad did not give specific details of the size of the stake to be sold, but confirmed the plan involved the carrier’s debts being spun off into a separate entity.

Ernst & Young did not respond to requests for comment.

PIA spokesman Abdullah Hafeez Khan said the airline was assisting the privatisation process, extending “full cooperation” to the transaction adviser.

Ishaq Dar, who has previously served as the finance minister previously and has been named by the PML-N to retain the portfolio if it forms the next government, told Reuters that the sale of PIA will be fast-tracked.

“It will, God willing, move ahead with fast speed,” he said.

In a report in mid-January, the IMF expressed satisfaction over the measures initiated by the caretaker government to accelerate reforms of state-owned enterprises, specifically mentioning the amendment of the PIA privatisation law.

Under the privatisation plan submitted by Ernst & Young to the government on Dec 27, government-guaranteed legacy debt and payables — which are held by a consortium of seven domestic banks — will be parked in a holding company, Fawad and two sources involved in the process said.

Fawad said the government and the consortium had an agreement in place regarding the settlement of the legacy debt, which includes negative equity of Rs825bn in loans, creditors’ money and the losses. He provided no further details.

The sources had earlier said the banks wanted a five-year bond issued against the debt with a 16.5pc coupon on the paper, while the finance ministry was offering only 10pc.

The banks have not commented on the deal.

Besides its losses and debt, PIA’s governance and safety standards have been questioned by global aviation authorities for some years.

In early 2020, Czech and Hungarian air force jets were scrambled to intercept a PIA flight with 300 people on board as it went astray due to an “avoidable human error” by its pilot, according to a previously unreported confidential report by a PIA inquiry board, which was reviewed by Reuters.

In May that year, the crash of a PIA plane in Karachi killed nearly 100 people and a fake pilot licence scandal erupted later in 2020.

The scandal led to the European Union Aviation Safety Agency (EASA) banning the national carrier from flying to its most lucrative routes in Europe and the UK.

The 2020 ban is still in place and has cost the airline nearly Rs40bn in revenue annually, according to government records presented in parliament.

The airline has been pleading with EASA to lift the ban even provisionally, but to no avail, according to correspondence between it and PIA reviewed by Reuters.

The financial crisis has also led to seizure of PIA aircraft by creditors in recent months, according to the airline. One aircraft was taken at Kuala Lumpur airport for non-payment of lease fees, and another in Toronto for non-payment of ground handling, PIA said.

The Pakistan International Airline (PIA) was slapped with heavy fine after its air hostess reached Canada without a passport, ARY News reported on Sunday, citing sources.

Sources told ARY News that the air hostess was assigned to duty on flight PK-781 from Islamabad to Toronto when the unprecedented incident unfolded.

The air hostess traveled from Islamabad to Toronto relying solely on PIA General Declaration documents, avoiding the standard passport requirement.

Following the breach, the national carrier was slapped with a hefty fine for allowing flight attendants to arrive in Canada without proper documentation.

In a statement, the PIA spokesperson confirmed that the carrier has been fined $250 for the incident, underscoring the seriousness of the violation. However, it denied reports suggesting that the air hostess intended to seek political asylum upon landing in Canada.

It is pertinent to mention here that more than 10 PIA air hostesses have gone missing in Canada over the past two years, raising concerns about the welfare and safety of airline staff operating on international routes.

Earlier on March 1, another PIA cabin crew member went missing in Canada, the national airline spokesman confirmed.

A flight steward named Jibran Baloch was supposed to come back to PIA flight PK-782 in Toronto on February 29, however he did not turn up for work on the flight back to Pakistan.

A few days ago, a female air hostess named Maryam Raza also went missing from the hotel. Upon searching her hotel room, the authorities discovered her uniform along with a message “Thank you, PIA.”

Govt forms PIA holding company in major step towards privatisation

In what is being billed as a major step towards prvatisation, the government has approved the formation of the Pakistan International Airlines holding company.

The approval was given by the federa cabinet in a meeting on Wednesday.

PIA’s chief executive officer will served as the head of the holding company for the time being, according to the cabinet decision.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has called for the process of privatising the national flag carrier to be expedited. He also asked authorities to submit a plan regarding the outsourcing of airports in the country.

A report in February, just before the country went to the polls, had indicated that the interim cabinet gave its approval on the recommendation of Pakistan’s privatisation commission, a body assigned to sell off all loss-making state-owned enterprises (SOEs).

The restructuring plan had split PIA into two entities.

One ‘clean’ one will be offered up for sale and the other will be parked in a holding company with legacy debt, which includes negative equity of Rs825 billion ($2.95 billion) in loans, creditors’ money and losses.

The statement from the prime minister’s office said the plan which had been approved would “divide the PIA into two companies, TopCo and HoldCo”.

The statement from the prime minister’s office said the plan which had been approved would “divide the PIA into two companies, TopCo and HoldCo”.

its better to get rid off this white elephant which is just adding a more burden on the economy.

PIA is just a disaster nowadays. Either they should improve the quality and make the rules strict and run this organization like professionals or else just hand it over to some private guys who might handle it better than the GOV.

Following reforms in the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA), the shares of the national flag carrier recorded 600 per cent surge during trading at the Pakistan Stock Exchange.

In the last 10 days, the PIA shares jumped to Rs27 from Rs4.50. According to market experts, the share price is going up due to the confidence of investors after the reform process in the PIA.

With a share value of Rs27, the PIA share has become the 17th biggest trading share in the PSX.

Investors from seven countries show interest in outsourcing of airports

Investors from Germany, France, Netherlands, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, and Turkiye as well as local groups have shown their interest in outsourcing of three airports of Pakistan, ARY News reported.

As per details, Minister for Defence and Aviation Khawaja Muhammad Asif chaired a meeting regarding the outsourcing of airports and privatisation of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).

The federal government had earlier decided to outsource the country’s major three airports including Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad. The International Finance Corporation (IFC) briefed the meeting about updates on the matter.

Khawaja Muhammad Asif directed to convene an online meeting with Pakistani ambassadors in these countries and to ask them for actively engaging with interested groups.

He also suggested linking local investors with international investors so that awareness of local investors can be increased and they can participate in the bidding process.

Privatisation Commission Secretary Usman Akhtar Bajwa informed the minister about the marketing plan and initial engagements with international investors.

The federal minister directed to visit these countries to establish active links with potential investors and bring groups interested in privatisation to Pakistan.

The minister also pledged support for both transactions at the federal level.

Secretary aviation, additional secretary ministry of foreign affairs, and other senior officers were also present on the occasion.

Chicago sold its parking lot for a couple Billion dollars to Morgan Stanely and investors for 75 years , MS has already made their money back and the city pays them whenever there is a parade or loss of traffic for the meters.

Absolute joke privatisation is when not done by smart people and seeing who is in charge, this will be an absolute dumb deal.

Privatisation of PIA advances: Cabinet clears 11-member board for holding company

The Federal Cabinet has given its nod to the formation of the board for the newly established PIA Holding Company, marking a significant step forward in the privatization process of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).

Air Marshal Aamir Hayat has been appointed as the inaugural CEO of the company, following the cabinet's approval of the eleven-member board.

This crucial decision was reached through a circular resolution from the cabinet, granted under the special authority of Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif.

The board comprises former State Bank Governor and Finance Secretary Tariq Bajwa as its Chairman, along with seven independent directors and four government officials.

Among the independent directors are prominent figures from the banking sector, including Atif Aslam Bajwa and Shehzad Dada. Meanwhile, the government representatives on the board include the Secretary of Aviation, Finance, Privatization, and the Planning Commission.

As part of the transition, the assets and liabilities of PIA will be transferred to the newly formed holding company. Additionally, the registration of the PIA Holding Company with the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) is underway, signaling the formal commencement of its operations.

PIA air hostess arrested at Toronto airport over illegal activity

An air hostess posted on the Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) flight from Lahore to Toronto has been detained at the Toronto airport following the discovery of passports belonging to individuals purportedly unrelated to her.

Sources revealed that passports of allegedly unrelated persons were found in the possession of the detained air hostess, identified as Hina Sani, posted on flight PK-789 to Toronto.

According to insider information, this is not the first instance of concern regarding the conduct of the air hostess. She had previously been warned for allegedly bringing contraband into Canada.

It has also been disclosed that the detained air hostess is a relative of a beloved Pakistani singer and a social media model herself. Her involvement in such an incident has garnered significant attention and raised questions about the circumstances surrounding her detention.

Furthermore, it has come to light that seven additional flight attendants were accompanying Hina Sani on flight PK 789, all of whom were declared "no-flyers" by the airline for Toronto.

The sources also revealed that the crew received special permission from the deputy general manager (DGM) of Flight Services with his own ID, which is a departure from standard protocol. This raises further questions about the circumstances leading up to the incident.

Following the detention, authorities in Canada proceeded to question the other two air hostesses on the flight. Subsequently, they were allowed to go to their hotel after the interrogation.

Carrying passports of people other than your own while travelling is an international crime.

Commenting on the matter, Abdullah Khan, a spokesman for the PIA, confirmed they were aware of the incident and in touch with Canadian authorities for cooperation. "Full cooperation will be given to the Canadian authorities, and any legal action suggested will be taken," the spokesperson added.

This is not the first incident where a PIA staff member has come on the radar of the Canadian authorities, as late last month, an air hostess of the national flag carrier had allegedly gone missing while on duty in Canada.

Last hurdles to PIA privatisation removed

The government, domestic banks and development finance institutions (DFIs) have successfully concluded PIA’s commercial debt negotiations, removing the last hurdles in the way of privatisation of the national flag carrier.

Under the arrangement, Pakistan International Airlines Company Ltd’s (PIACL) commercial domestic debt will be moved to PIA Holding Company Ltd, established by the federal government as part of the former’s legal restructuring.

According to a statement issued by PIACL on Friday, the development paved the way for filing of a scheme of arrangement (SoA) for legal segregation of PIACL from the Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP).

The federal cabinet approved the segregation plan on Feb 6 this year.

PIACL’s privatisation has been a priority agenda for the federal government, and the development represents one of the most complex restructuring exercise undertaken to prepare PIACL for privatisation. This arrangement will help make a viable business case for private sector’s investment in the national flag carrier.

According to the statement, domestic banks and DFIs demonstrated a firm commitment to the government’s privatisation initiative and extended their full cooperation in finalising the arrangement for PIACL’s commercial domestic debt.

The term sheet covering mutually agreed commercial aspects of loan transfer was signed on Thursday between PIACL, PIA Holding Company and lender banks.

In order to manage the affairs of PIA Holding Company diligently, a seven-member independent board comprising the former State Bank of Pakistan governor and prominent leaders from banking and other areas of expertise was notified this week by the federal government.

The board in its inaugural meeting endorsed the SoA delineating the pathway for privatisation of the national flag carrier.

Following the approval of its draft by the boards of PIACL and PIA Holding Company, the SoA for PIACL restructuring was filed with the SECP on March 28.

Following these significant developments, expressions of interest from potential investors for the privatisation of PIACL have been planned to be called in the coming days.

Ice recovered from shoes of PIA hostess Hina Sani in Canada

Canadian authorities have retrieved ice from the joggers (shoes) of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) air hostess, Hina Sani, who was arrested on suspicion of illegal activity.

Hina remains detained and is yet to be granted bail. Canadian immigration officials are expected to present her before a local court soon.

The story takes a more complex turn with allegations that Hina might not be the sole actor. She reportedly named two other PIA officials stationed at the Toronto Airport - Faiza Javed and Jameel - who allegedly assisted her.

Canadian immigration officials reportedly questioned Faiza and Jameel late into the night, suggesting their potential involvement in the case.

Hina Sani currently awaits a court appearance and has not been granted bail. If deported, she will reportedly travel back to Pakistan as a passenger, not as crew.

Prior to her arrest, Hina had reportedly received warnings from Canadian authorities.

On the other hand, the case of Hina Sani, a PIA air hostess detained in Toronto on suspicion of illegal activity, has taken a surprising turn. After being initially released, reports now confirm she has been re-arrested and sent to jail.

A PIA spokesperson confirmed Sani’s transfer to jail, although the specific charges against her remain unclear. This development comes amidst the Easter holiday weekend, delaying her next court appearance until Wednesday.

Meanwhile, Pakistan’s Federal Investigation Agency (FIA) has reportedly contacted PIA seeking details about Sani's case. This suggests a potential wider investigation into the situation.

Adding another layer of complexity, reports indicate “influential circles” are pressuring PIA’s administration to reinstate Sani, despite her suspension.

Furthermore, an internal investigation within PIA has been launched by the Central Disciplinary Unit. This probe reportedly focuses on a manager and a flight scheduler, potentially linked to Sani’s case.

Allegations have also surfaced that PIA flight schedulers may have assigned staff with “no-fly declarations” to the Toronto route. Additionally, there are claims of crew members being engaged on “non-routine duties” by the General Manager of Flight Services.

Seems like it’s only a matter of time before PIA flights to Toronto are banned. Pathetic stuff from the airline staff and horrible management.

PIA has hired drug addicts, smugglers, and drunkards. Good for it to get privatized and for the new management kick all of these people out of here who are putting the name and respect of the country at risk.

Pakistan canvasses interest in purchase of stake in PIA

As part of reforms urged by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), the Privatisation Commission said on Tuesday that it was putting on the block a stake ranging from 51 per cent to 100pc of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA).

The disposal of the flag carrier is a step past elected governments have steered away from as likely to be highly unpopular, but progress on the privatisation will help pursue further funding talks with the IMF.

In a newspaper advertisement, the panel set a deadline of May 3 to receive statements of interest in PIA, which has piled up arrears of hundreds of billions of rupees, and it appointed EY Consulting as the financial adviser for the deal.

The newspaper advertisment by the Privatisation Commission.
“The restructured PIA is being offered to potential investors in its ‘debt-lite’ new structure for a 51pc-plus stake,” the Privatisation Commission said in a website presentation.

The panel aimed to sign a share price deal by June 24, after completing all steps in the transaction, it added. “The restructured PIA provides an opportunity to invest in a a full-service airline.”

PIA’s 23pc share of Pakistan’s aviation market is the biggest, and the airline could grow further to exceed historic levels of 30pc, the panel said.

With a fleet of 34 aircraft comprising 17 Airbus A320s, 12 Boeing B777s and 5 ATRs, the airline loses traffic to Middle Eastern carriers, who have a market share of 60pc, because of an absence of direct flights to destinations.

The carrier has air service pacts with 87 countries, and landing slots at key destinations such as London Heathrow.

Restructuring
The re-organisation of the business will separate the aviation-related aspects from non-core components, so freeing the operating subsidiary of a large portion of legacy debt.

The restructuring will move out 603 billion rupees ($2.2 billion) of liabilities, leaving 203 billion ($730 million) on the balance sheet for the acquired business.

The presentation added that PIA broke even at earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, amortisation, and restructuring or rent costs (EBITDAR) level in 2023, which the panel projected to continue in 2024.

Besides the losses and debt, however, global aviation regulators have questioned PIA’s governance and safety standards for some years.

Aleem showcases PIA opportunity to investors

Federal Minister for Privatisation Abdul Aleem Khan has called PIA “an attractive opportunity” for local and international investors, especially after restructuring its liabilities.

Chairing a meeting of the Privatisation Commission Board on Thursday, the minister hoped that Pakistani businesses would show their interest in acquiring the national airline.

The Privatisation Commission Board, in the two sessions held on April 2 and 4, approved the prequalification criteria and the committee for evaluating bids and interests submitted for PIA’s divestment.

The government appointed Ernst & Young, a global financial advisory firm, to prepare the plan for the loss-making firm, which completed its task during the caretaker setup.

The caretaker cabinet has approved Ernst & Young’s appointment for the financial and administrative reorganisation of PIA.

The financial advisor and the committee would evaluate prequalification documents to determine whether interested buyers meet the prescribed standards and criteria, which include experience, financial stability, technical expertise, safety record, and other relevant factors.

To speed up the privatisation process, the national airline has been bifurcated into two companies — the Pakistan International Airlines Corporation (PIAC) and PIA Holding.

The former would own flying operations, while the airline’s non-core assets and liabilities have been transferred to the latter. The Privatisation Commission, through an advertisement in national and international newspapers on April 2, has already invited expressions of interest from investors willing to buy majority stakes in PIACL.

Good news for economy: PIA’s liabilities, debt cleared

As per details, all financial losses and debts of the National Airline have been cleared as it has been shifted to the withholding company before the privatization.

The officials stated that Pakistan Stock Exchange has been notified about the clearance of PIA’s balance sheet.

After the recent development, PIA has become an attractive investment opportunity for major players in the aviation sector.

PIA also has 170 weekly flight routes spanning across 20 countries with 1.5 lac passengers traveling to Saudi Arabia via PIA, officials stated.

Yesterday, bids for the privatisation of Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) were sought from the buyers by May 3.

The government of Pakistan only wants to privatise the aviation department of the PIA and is interested in selling 51pc shares of the national flag carrier, while 49pc shares’ ownership will remain with the government.

The administrative control of PIA will also remain with the company buying the 51pc shares, the officials said.

It is pertinent to mention here as many as three Gulf countries including the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia and Qatar have shown interest in buying the cash-strapped Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) as the government expedites its privatisation plan, sources said.

Sources privy to the matter said that the companies from the three countries have approached the Pakistan government to negotiate a deal for the PIA.

Pakistan has also given a briefing to the officials of the three Gulf countries regarding the national flag carrier.

According to sources, Pakistan International Airlines would be sold to the highest bidder following the conclusion of the Pakistan International Airlines privatisation plan.

Prime Minister (PM) Shehbaz Sharif has termed transparency as the topmost priority of government in the process of outsourcing international airports.

Talking to the delegation of Istanbul Grand Airport in Lahore today before the departure of Saudi Arabia, he said that firstly, Pakistan is offering to outsource some commercial operations of Islamabad International Airport under Public Private Partnership.

The Prime Minister revealed that steps are being taken to augment the facilities for passengers at Islamabad, Karachi and Lahore airports.

He said that Pakistan is heading towards economic prosperity very fast and its dependence on public private partnership is also being accelerated.

PM Shehbaz said that there is an enormous potential of investment and partnership in urban development sector.

Welcoming the foreign businessmen and investors from all over the world, he expressed keen interest to promote the investment and partnership from Turkiye. He added that this is the best time for the promotion of business partnership for both countries.

The federal government had earlier decided to outsource the country’s major three airports including Karachi, Lahore, and Islamabad.

Earlier, it was reported that investors from Germany, France, Netherlands, Qatar, United Arab Emirates, Malaysia, and Turkiye as well as local groups have shown their interest in outsourcing of three airports of Pakistan.

On March 21, the Civil Aviation Authority (CAA) on Thursday extended the bid submission date for outsourcing of Islamabad International Airport

As per details, the decision to extend the tender date came in the wake of a lack of interest from the bidders in the outsourcing of the Airport.

Hereby, the CAA extended the bid submission date for two months to May 15 and applications were sought from the investors who are interested in outsourcing the airports.

Government should privatise the Prime Minister office as well because that is also not gonna work like PIA didn't.
