Lol the Aussies are very ruthless about winning. This was within the laws of the game. Hafeez the veteran should not have been so careless

He make it for that by walking on not out.

Am surprised that's all Gambhir had to say about the game.

I wouldn't call it unsportsmanlike. Warner is an old-school Australian and this would be them, at their best behaviour. I would rather focus on what an amazing shot it turned out to be. To smash a ball that was bouncing lower and lower, and so far back into the stands, is power + tremendous skill.

I agree.

Although seemed odd.

As far as the rules are concerned, they need to be modified.

Double bounce is a dead ball, and any event that takes places after the “dead” event should not count.

This 6 should have been voided big Australia should have had a free-hit.

It's just like Mankading rules. Allowed within the games rules but unsportsmanlike? Maybe

It was a no ball so a free hit as such as he couldnt be out to it.
This is where the problem lies within the laws.

Hafeez didn't over step, the ball got stuck in his hand. So if the batter can still play it then it really shouldn't have been called a no ball.

Well, they selected the octogenarian, they have to pay a price.

Full credit to Warner, its not easy to hit that six as well.

Even if a young guy bowls this kind of delivery, he should pay a price. Its called quality control.

As a viewer, he needs to refund me also to see such deliveries

To be fair, the guy walked when he didn't even edge the ball. :))

I'd say it's even.

It’s totally fair.

Let me ask a reverse question. Say the bat slips out of a batsman’s hands and he then gets caught, bowled or LBW-l. Can that batsman claim he shouldn’t he given out?

Same for the ball slipping out of the bowler’s hands. Batsmen can have at it.

I think it was fair.
However not sure if it should have been called a no ball.

Agree but then how do we prevent an over-arm ian chappell type of delivery.

If you give it a dead ball , then its an incentive for budding bowlers to not concentrate on the basics in a way ….

The law is clearly mentioned in mcc rules. So cannot argue whether it's a no ball.

21.7 Ball bouncing more than once, rolling along the ground or pitching off the pitch

https://www.lords.org/mcc/the-laws-of-cricket/no-ball

But regarding whether batsmen should hit , you will get varied opinions. I don't believe in this spirit of cricket yada yada because we don't have consistency in it.

Lets see if Ashwin takes the bait from GG.

Sorry I meant that it wasn't unsporting. I think it should have been called a dead ball. However, it certainly should not have been called a no ball.

Yes but if you allow a double bounce delivery - it is difficult to hit it for six. For ex : Mark Taylors only test wicket where he hit the stumps on double bounce.

Thats where I think the law should be changed. It should just be called a dead ball and then that delivery is bowled again.

Ya but then it will waste the time of the viewers & you may run the risk that young kids bowling will not learn to be precise ( just a thought )

It’s totally lawful like an underhand ball by Chappell but god is it unsportsmanlike and darn ugly behaviour. Would a New Zealand player do it …probably not. Spirit of the game has no meaning in Australia. Like sledging…it’s totally lawful but very ugly behaviour and just doesn’t translate across some cultures who prefer to play the game as professionals.

There’s no correlation with the walking when caught behind. We (Inc him) all thought he nicked it as there was a clear sound. He didn’t review because he knew it would be a wasted review. Just goes to show technology is not 100% accurate

I didn’t know two bounces meant dead ball (or no ball). Seems the umpire didn’t know either and awarded 6 for it.

How is this unsportsmanlike like? There have been instances when batsmen get hit by bouncers and the helmet fell on the wicket and they got out, i didn't see any bowling team having any issue with it. You could say Warner was extremely lucky or Hafeez extremely unlucky but there was nothing non sporting about it. Batsman loosing the grip on bat, fielders slipping and ball going for boundary all these things that are pure luck happen all the times, its part of the game. I tell you what was unsportsmanlike in yesterday's game, Hassan Ali blocking Stoinis from taking the double (come on we all saw that was deliberate) as he was scared of bowling to Stoinis and it was only poetic justice that Wade hit him for six in that over.

I don't like mankading and I don't like this but they are both within the laws of the game. Having said that, maybe it's time for a change.

Gambhir is being idiotic once again, this is nothing new. Remember Andy Bichel swatting a six off a double pitched ball against England in the 2003 WC, thought that was cool when it happened. Never thought I would see it happening in a world cup once again.

Gambhir is being idiotic once again, this is nothing new.
On a side note -
Hes not being idiotic, hes fast becoming a street smart politician, he will leave no stone unturned to polish his image & look very goody goody.
And as MenInG pointed out, he is laying a bait for Ashwin, for some controversy :)

The Pakistan vs Australia semi-final in ICC T20 World Cup 2021 will go down as one of the most memorable matches in the history of T20 Internationals. The contest had plenty of drama. One of the biggest talking points of the match was a double-bounce delivery bowled by Mohammad Hafeez which was dispatched for a six over deep midwicket by Australian opener David Warner.

The incident happened in the eighth over where Hafeez was introduced into the attack. The ball seemed to have stuck in Hafeez's hands and there was a double bounce on the pitch before Warner made the most of the chance to score a maximum. Warner's shot created plenty of buzz and also triggered the 'spirit of cricket' debate on social media.

Former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir had an interesting take on the matter as he shared the image of the incident with a tweet where he also tagged seasoned Indian off-spinner R Ashwin. "What an absolutely pathetic display of spirit of the game by Warner! #Shameful What say ashwinravi99?"

Not to forget, Ashwin mankading Jos Buttler in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2019 match between Kings XI Punjab (KXIP) and Rajasthan Royals (RR) had led to similar reactions.

Most of the cricket fans and pundits on social media were taken aback by Gambhir's tweet as Australian journalist Peter Lalor wrote, "Bad take Gautam."

Trying to explain what Gambhir meant in his tweet, Ashwin wrote in response to Lalor, "His point is that if this is right , that was right. If that was wrong , this is wrong too. Fair assessment? @plalor."

Lalor was quick to apologise for failing to understand the sarcasm behind Gambhir's tweet.

"Apologies to Gautam, I missed the sarcasm. I’ll give myself a punch in the head," he wrote.

In response to Ashwin's tweet, a Twitter user wrote, "Warner just played the ball in front of him - did nothing wrong."

Ashwin agreed with the comment as he responded, "Absolutely it was a wonderful hit by Davidwarner31. Great shot."

Warner was looking in sublime form in Australia's pursuit of 176. He was dismissed for 49 by Shadab Khan as he edged one behind the wickets. Warner's dismissal was another talking point from the match as the replays suggested no signs of a nick on ultra edge. While Warner did not review the decision, Matthew Wade later said Warner didn't think he had hit it either.

"Yeah, we haven't had too much time to chat about it, just passing comments... I think there was a noise. He (Warner) wasn't sure, maybe his bat handle clicked or his hand on his bat. He didn't think that he hit it but I think Glenn at the other end heard the noise and to be fair that out there, that was the only thing that could have been so he was potentially thinking that he (Warner) might have hit it. It's really tough in those situations. How many times do you see a batter think that they haven't hit it and they have?", Wade said after the match.

Nothing wrong in it.
We've seen batsman losing his balance and disturbing stumps (Inzi) or helmet coming off and hitting wicket (KP). It was all good.

Neither mankading or hitting six on double bounced ball is against sportsmanship.
Sportsmanship is a farce.

Totally against this 18th century spirit of the game s*** - you play to win by the documented rules & if its not documented, then its all fair. Nowhere do the rules mention that a double bounce ball is a dead ball (infact rules specifically say its a no-ball), so thats that. Warner had every right to play that shot (& a well executed one at that too!)

We might be feeling bad today because we lost, but someday we will do something which will be a subject of similar discussion so this stance has to be clear.

I was so angry when I was it yesterday and on top a free hit, Aussies are known bad guys of cricket and nobody likes them. I wonder who's supporting them against Kiwis absolutely no one.
Best thing would have been a dead ball!

What is unsportsmanlike is Pakistan resorting to 40 year old uncles in a sport where the people who are the age of Malik and Hafeez have children ready to make first class debuts. Also, Hafeez was chucking throughout that over

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Harbhajan Singh said:

"Though it was within the rules, it should not have happened (Warner hitting a six off Hafeez). It doesn't convey a good message. We have also got a similar chance in the past but we didn't do that."

Ngl, that was hilarious. I'm fine with it, not easy get power into a ball that's kept that low and bounced twice or about to bounce twice. Takes skill to do that.

Bro it's 2021, no 39-41 year old men have 18+ year old kids unless you're from a village. Imran Khan won the world cup at 39, Federer and Serena are dominating around Malik's age and then you got LeBron and Ronaldo still being so dominant at nearly 37.

First-ever no-ball

Pakistan off-spinner Mohammad Hafeez has shown excellent discipline throughout his cricket. In his 18-year international career, Hafeez has bowled thirteen thousand and sixty-one (13,061) deliveries without ever over-stepping.

However, the double-bounced delivery that was hit for a six by David Warner in Dubai will go in Hafeez’s record as his first no-ball (after 2175.5 overs) in international cricket.

It is pertinent to mention here that, until four years ago, double-bounced deliveries were legal under the playing conditions. In 2017, the rules were changed and a delivery that bounces more than once (previously more than twice) before the popping crease was declared a no-ball.

What is unsportsmanlike is Pakistan resorting to 40 year old uncles in a sport where the people who are the age of Malik and Hafeez have children ready to make first class debuts. Also, Hafeez was chucking throughout that over

Hafeez is a crook. Doesnt bowl for ages and then will suddenly come on and sneakily chuck an over.

If it is not illegal, I don't see any issue.

This is semi-final. Every run counts.

Within laws of the game. Then it counts. Its SF of a major tournament. Aussies dont give a penny nor ask for one when on field.

I don't know why people are praising Warner's skills here. It's just a dolly of a delivery to hit anywhere.
It was a pressure situation and every run would have counted so Warner didn't think twice about hitting.
Umpires usually call such balls dead balls and that's what should have happened.

Warner did not do anything wrong, its in the laws of the game and he did not break any rules, if a bowler bowls a dumb delivary like that, you have every right to take advantage and rightly so. That is how you win games, by taking advantage of other teams mistake. Warner did not so anything wrong. The above poster did mention umpire probably could have called a dead ball, so if anything the umpire might have made a mistake their. Regardless even if it was called a dead ball, this would not change the result of the match it was clear we were 15 runs short atleast.

As much as I — shall we say — do not often feel a particular desire for the Aussies to win… ever… I will back Warner on this one. I think what he did was fair enough. He also walked when he was given out by the umpire despite not having hit the ball, which even if the cheeky six had been an immoral act (which, I would argue, it was not) would have rebalanced matters. So, no issues from me.

Gambhir is being idiotic once again, this is nothing new. Remember Andy Bichel swatting a six off a double pitched ball against England in the 2003 WC, thought that was cool when it happened. Never thought I would see it happening in a world cup once again.

You need some rose tinted glasses. GG was attacking Ashwin for his Mankads.

GG is a politician, read between the lines.

I disagree strongly with Gautam Ghambir.

Rubbish deliveries even if they are bowled by the world’s premier cricketer of the ongoing millennium, still deserve to be punished and smashed for six.

This reminds me of that Alan Border six against phil simmons. That one six triggered a chain of events. They were subdued until then. Hafeez was not used after that. If he had gotten away with 7 run over he would have bowled again. You could argue that ball from hafeez also played a role in Australia winning.

Exactly lol Beamers, wide down the leg side all are rubbish balls. Nobody is going to sympathize with them.

Those condoning this shot, do you approve of mankading as well? If at all, mankading seems more legit than hitting a six off an unintentional double bounce.

Sure warner needs to let the ball go so hafeez can chuck better bowl for single or even take his wicket. Why didn't players call warner back when he was not out then? was it sportsman spirit?

i support Mankading 100%. You cannot leave the crease before delivering. Basic rules. We followed even at school level. It gives significant advantage to the non striker if he runs towards danger end.

Is Gambhir for once in his life being pro-pak or is he trying to stir a controversy among Pakistani fans to make them look like sore loser?

Can’t tell!

Honestly Hafeez should have been more careful but it happens. Good on Warner.... if hadn't walked Pakistan were out of ideas.

You say that like hitting a six off a double-bounced ball is child's play.

Asked one of the Pakistani players who played versus Australia about this and he wasn't happy with what Warner did, but said they just had to accept it as he hadn't broken any rules.

“FOUR! NO-BALL! FREE-HIT! And it goes worse for Australia. From around the wicket to Fakhar, Cummins misses the yorker and he bowls a waist-height no ball. Fakhar does well to guide it past short third man”.

“NO-BALL, FOUR! What was that, Josh? That is criminal in this situation. Misses the yorker and he bowls a waist-height no ball. Rizwan takes it on by pulling the ball through deep mid-wicket for 4”.

Ball slipped from bowler’s hand in the above 2 cases. Same principle should apply as in the case of Hafeez.

Dubai, While former India cricketer Gautam Gambhir has castigated Australian opener David Warner for smashing Pakistan spinner Mohammad Hafeez's delivery, which had bounced twice, over the mid-wicket fence for a six, during their T20 World Cup semifinal here on November 11, Aussie coach Justin Langer showered praise on his batter saying, "It's one of the best things I've ever seen in cricket".

Gambhir had made his displeasure known on social media after Warner hit a double-bounce delivery for a six during Australia's semifinal win over Pakistan, terming it "absolutely pathetic" and slamming the opener for lack of sportsmanship.

But Australian coach Langer told Sportsday on Friday that, "It's one of the best things I've ever seen in cricket. How he had the instincts in a semifinal and the ball bounces twice… how he hit it over the fence for six was unbelievable. He then missed one and walked off (despite being given out caught behind) which was unbelievable, the atmosphere was incredible and it was a great result.

"David Warner is like having (boxers) Conor McGregor and Floyd Mayweather in your team -- a two in one. He just does his thing and we back him in and keep our arms around him. He's been brilliant. He's elite fit at the moment which tells me he's hungry and he's playing beautifully as well so let's hope he has one more good (innings in him)," added Langer.

On Friday, Gambhir had slammed Warner -- who played a key role in Australia beating Pakistan by scoring 49 off 30 deliveries --, saying he did not think twice before dispatching the ball over the fence, before it was called a no ball and a free-hit awarded.

"What an absolutely pathetic display of spirit of the game by Warner! #Shameful What say ashwinravi99? (Ravichandran Ashwin's twitter account)," tweeted Gambhir.

Australia will face New Zealand in the final, scheduled to be played on Sunday (November 14).

A little disappointed for Hafeez as this double bouncing lollipop spoiled what looked like another successful ICC tournament for him , having given two wonderful batting performances against Namibia and Scotland. Ok he didn’t score a 50 against them either, but you could tell the Namibian and Scottish bowlers were pretty impressed.

Btw batsmen have been hitting dead ball for boundaries forever, I never saw it unsportsmanlike.

Not sure but it seems to me that he is making fun of this Pakistan's loss. jale par namak dalna type.

Nothing more.

Actually after conceding 7 runs without a ball being bowled in the over and first ball as free hit, Hafeez did remarkably well to limit the runs to just 13 in that over. Perhaps deserved another over.

You say that like hitting a six off a double-bounced ball is child's play.

Thats not the point if you are being genuine. These western hypocrites sitting in their ivory tower need to be called out for what they are - hypocrites. Calls something as bad when it suits them and do worse when on your own. This is where India has done better than Pakistan when it comes to Australia which is to see through this. Sri Lanka probably pioneered this back in 1996 - grabbing them by the horns and rubbing it down.

Well, that 6 and that over has brought an end to Hafiz's career. Hafeez will never be in the playing XI anymore.

So Pakistan fans should be happy.

Gambhir in his tweet didn't slam Warner. Rather it was a sarcastic tweet, directed at Ashwin who is known for sportsmanship controversies. The sarcasm behind the GG's tweet was later clarified by Ashwin himself.

It should of been called a bump ball by the umpire in the 1st place, secondly it was very unsportsmanlike, probably why he walked when he thought he nicked it, it was a shot from a 5 year old playing street cricket, not from someone playing in a World Cup final

It's nothing, if bowler picked that ball before batsman get there the ball will be dead.. So nothing to do with sportsmanship in this case, (and I don't care much about sportsman spirit TBH, if it's allowed batsman/bowler had the right to do those things)..

Ball slipping and becoming juicy full toss - Hit for 6

Ball slipping and doing two bounces - Hit for 6

The only difference is that where it bounced after slipping.

The only difference is that where it bounced after slipping.

The difference is the degree of error to the extent that the first case can be regarded as a skill lapse. The second one can be safely identified and regarded as an accidental and unintentional slip.

Your spirit of the game upholding player didnt bat an eyelid to demostrate his prowess in hitting that handicapped delivery for six. No shame there, enh?

Gambhir is favouring Pak!?:O It may have been unsportsmanlike yet legal too. Most batsmen would have done what Warner did. I don't believe Gambhir would have spared a Pak bowler if he was in Warner's position.

Wether or not a NZ player would do it. Ive seen Craig Mcmillan chase a ball well off the pitch that Tufnell lost control of and smash it for four. Was in a test match.

Yup. Found a video of that incident. NZ are no saints as they are made out to be.
