The International Cricket Council (ICC) has not only rejected India’s Mahendra Singh Dhoni‘s request for wearing the ’keeper’s gloves which had a dagger insignia but also refused West Indies opener Chris Gayle permission to use ‘Universe Boss’ logo on his bat during the ongoing ICC World Cup 2019.

In both cases the ICC cited equipment regulation violation.

Gayle, a self-proclaimed ‘Universe Boss’, had requested the ICC to allow him use the prefix for his bat branding but he was informed that he can’t use any clothing or sporting equipment for personal messages.

“ICC couldn’t have made an exception for Dhoni as no personal messages are allowed on equipment. Gayle wanted it but when he was refused permission, he accepted it and moved on,” a source privy to the development informed on Sunday.

Talking about Dhoni, the official said, “It is not about military symbolism. It is about a simple rule that no personal messages are allowed. If ICC did not make an exception for Gayle, then how come they would make it for Dhoni.”

It has also been learnt that even innocuous messages or emojis are not allowed on equipment.

“Tomorrow, Moeen Ali will again request for wearing a ‘Free Palestine’ wristband which is a direct political message. We did not allow it then and we won’t allow it now. You won’t be even allowed to have a word like love’ embossed on the equipment,” the source added.

The ICC allowed the Indian team to wear camouflage caps recently during an international match against Australia because it was a bilateral series.

“A formal request was made by the BCCI as they wanted to use the match as a fund-raiser for the victims of the Pulwama terror attack. In bilateral series, ICC allows teams to do charity. Just like the Pink Test’ in Australia for the Jane McGrath foundation that works on breast cancer awareness, the source further added.

It has been learnt that Dhoni is yet to get any official reprimand from the ICC for the South Africa game, during which his green gloves had dagger insignia.

As per rules, if he sports the insignia again in any of the matches, he would first be warned and then face financial penalties of 25, 50 and 75 per cent of match fees for every transgression.

In response to a PakPassion query on this news, the ICC replied:

We’re not commenting on player requests but as per rules and regs, we do not allow personal messages.

Strange stuff. Realistically Afridi should not have been allowed to have the BoomBoom branded bat

Boom Boom was also a company so it can fall under sponsor category.

KP used "KP" on his bat for quite a time as well.

TBF Chris Gayle has been stretching this Universe Boss thing a bit too much these days. Also the cringy comments of him being the greatest of all time lol. He wants to be the Ibrahimovic of Cricket

"Self-proclaimed Universe Boss."

:))) :))) :)))

Anyway, love his energy and antics.

This WC has too many subminimul messages which we can do without.

Can't remember this exact case but I'd assume whoever his sponsor was at the time had a bat model named the "KP".

It was Adidas but didnt know the model of the bat was named after him. In that case Chris Gayle also deserved a model named "Universe Boss". :gayle

Well the clown behavior from Gayle is fun, I'm sure he will find plenty of other way to entertain.

Respect to the Pakistani batsmen who opted to highlight the great charity Barnados on their bats, instead of the nonsense by Gayle And Dhoni. These two think they are bigger than the game, nobody outside of India and Jamaica see thems as some great heros.

What did Dhoni do?

What did Dhoni do?

His armed forces symbol on his gloves. Its a game of cricket, his love for them wont die in a day. He could have done the same as Pak batsmen, helped to promote a charity of his choice on his bat which would be allowed but no this chap thinks he's special because he had a day out at some armed forces camp.

This universe boss tag is such cringe-worthy, and he gave it to himself that makes it worse.

So all this time I thought this universe boss thing on his bat was his own brand. Go figures ... Lol

Personal messages, Nicknames, Etc. These things shouldn't really matter.

In football a lot of players have the flag of their country on boots, children or wife's name. Dhoni's issue was understandable, But a simple nickname? ICC liven up man.

with what he has achived and leaving for cricket followers to remember him by, I think he has every right to procliam himself Universe Boss

This is all we’re getting from this trash World Cup with rained out games best thing is ban irrelevant stuff and make money off of it

Chris Gayle is a legend everywhere.

Probably only you think he is a Jamaican hero.

I wrote hero not legend and he is not a hero of anysorts in England. He is a hero in India and the Windies. Even Pak fans dont see him as any great hero as he has was pretty rubbish in the PSL. Good batsmen but vastly overrated , universal boss lol.

Yet ok to call him that!

Seeing this thread late but I thought should have been simple really. Set up a company named Universe Boss in his home country. Then logo away because then it's advertising and apparently ok by the ICC.
