What's new

[PICTURE] Is it fair to play cricket in poor air quality cities?

Isn't it a bit irrational that your ( I mean Indian) focus seems to be on moving the champions trophy.

These types of things need time to be rubber stamped and formalised. It cannot be done by the time of CT just to punish Pakistan ( even though currently the pollution complaints by players focus only on India).

I gave the ICC 5 years to pull together a plan because roughly it will take that amount of time and it gives the chance for boards to try to take some mitigating steps.

However perhaps I was wrong and something needs to be done sooner. Let's start from the next T20 world cup. It gives some time for mitigation but also keeps your desired urgency. Win win situation I hope you agree.
The boards have no control over industries in India, a pressure tactic won’t be enough to make India go Green as that requires an entirely different approach.

I would say it should be upto the players, for example IPL, no player is forced to come to India, similar should be for ICC trophies.

Also the entire country’s AQI cannot be measured by New Delhi which seems to be the premise.

The OP contains image of Kolkata and the title says "cities" not countries bro.

It's Indians who have focused on New Delhi or taken it as criticism of India as a country.

If this is implemented all cricket in Pakistan should really be stopped. Indus has quite a few venues where air quality isn't that much of an issue

@DeadlyVenom

It was great to watch Pakistan vs New Zealand in absolute fine air quality today. One could tell from miles away Pakistan cricket team was absolute garbage.

Air quality is related to health and well being of players. A serious topic that for some reason Indians are taking far too personally.

What exactly are BCCI thinking holding a test match in Delhi in November? It's easily the worst time for air-quality in India and Pakistan, especially in cities like Delhi and Lahore where it reaches dangerous levels. I guess they want to see a repeat of the 2017 Sri Lanka test where players come out to play with face masks on, and start throwing up on the boundary.

Delhi To Host 2nd IND-WI Test, 1st SA Test Moved To Kolkata: Report

Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, which was announced as the venue for the first India-South Africa Test in November 2025 by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) on April 3, will now host the 2nd Test of the two-match series between India and West Indies.

The second India-West Indies Test was scheduled to take place at Eden Gardens in Kolkata from October 10 to 14, but now Delhi will host that fixture, whereas Kolkata will host the India-South Africa Test from November 14 to 18.

According to a report in Times of India on Wednesday, June 4, the decision to swap Test matches between Delhi and Kolkata has been taken keeping in mind the pollution in Delhi at that time of the year.

“The Arun Jaitley Delhi will now hold the second Test between India and West Indies between Oct 10-14, which was originally supposed to be held at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata. Kolkata, meanwhile, will now hold the first Test between India and South Africa from Nov 14-18. This has been done to avoid the players from being affected by possibly high pollution levels at that time of the year. The BCCI priotises the welfare and wellbeing of the players and their health at all times. A formal announcement regarding this swap will be made in the next couple of days," a reliable source in the BCCI was quoted as saying by TOI on Wednesday.

The BCCI took to X on April 3 to announce the schedule for Team India (Senior Men) international home season for 2025.

Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad will host the first India-West Indies Test from October 2 to 6, and Delhi will host the second match (official confirmation awaited).

Following the West Indies series, India will face South Africa in two Tests, three ODIs and five T20Is.

Kolkata will host the series opener (official confirmation awaited), and the second red-ball match will be played in Guwahati from November 22 to 26.

The three ODIs will take place in Ranchi, Raipur and Visakhapatnam on November 30, December 3 and December 6, respectively, whereas Cuttack, Mullanpur, Dharamsala, Lucknow and Ahmedabad will host T20Is on December 9, 11, 14, 17 and 19, respectively.

Man the surroundings of the current match in Lahore look dire too.

This is dangerous for players and spectators too

This can cause cancer. Feel sorry for south african players. May god protect them :kp

I think it is okay for T20. T20 is short.

But, playing Test or ODI in this condition is probably not a good idea.

Subcontinental countries need to focus on reducing pollutions. It is getting worse and worse.

Hope you shower the same prayers and blessings on the South African players when they play a test match in Kolkata mid-November :kp

The air-quality in Faisalabad might actually be worse. And they have 3 ODIs scheduled there.

I don't think Kolkata has this dangerous level of AQI, Delhi and the nearby areas have the problem. Kolkata being near the sea should have much lower AQI

Why does India have bad air quality?

It’s because it comes from Air India

Regardless of where it is, it’s an absolute shame breathing unhealthy air, leave alone playing competitive cricket in it. Ideally, this should become a national priority but other issues become that without realizing breathing poor quality air contributes to long term health issues eventually exerting strain on the infrastructure of the city or place. You know it’s a sorry state when we have to celebrate breathing unpolluted air, which should be a norm and not an exception.

I know many people try to take potshots against India, and Indians return the favor in equal measure, but the sad thing is that the core issue gets sidetracked by this one-upmanship. I agree with @DeadlyVenom that people need to be united on this. But the usual suspects will make it a boxing match.

Perhaps this should become a TP thread to discuss potential approaches to tackle this. This is an Asian menace for most part.

In Pakistan, Punjab, conditions a few days ago got so bad that authorities turned off the monitoring units as they were scared to report it.

It is a travesty that cricket is played across asia in such conditions and people are scared to say anything, or when they do say it, like Joe Root and Harry brook about India, they get criticized by overly patriotic fans.

Unfortunately, that is true, and in an ideal world people would accept and try to do better. But unfortunately the world is not ideal and people are agenda driven. One thing though is sure, if you dish it, be prepared to take it too. These are the times we live in.

I have left North India since 2019 only to breathe better. My parents visit me Nov to March every year as well, to avoid the winter air quality in Delhi. I already got a house in Pune, and my parents too are considering a permanent switch now, things are that bad.

I feel sorry for anyone breathing that kind of air either in Bharat or Pakistan.

People are unaware of hazards of poor AQI. Should take responsibility to tackle such issues, but we don't give a damn.

Southern/western India is lucky because we don't have the temperature inversion that North India/Pakistan suffers from during winter.
