[PICTURES] Is India the greatest home team ever?

Definitely in last 50 years, we are the strongest home teams. The result is because of high quality spinners and a great batting lineup.

No team has produced quality spinners as much as India in last 50 years which in itself is a huge sample. Bedi, Chandra, Kumble and Ashwin have been elite spin bowlers and they were supported by Prasanna, Harbhajan and Jadeja.

There was a point when I had huge expectations with Kuldeep but he seems to have lost his mojo. He can't bat and neither does our fast bowlers while Ashwin/Jadeja does, so that also made a difference.

Not for me. Australia has a better W/L record, as well as total win percentage
 
Australia, easily.

In the last 7 years we have had a crazy run at home, so right now beating India in India is probably the toughest feat in world cricket.
 
India's domination really started after Ganguly took over the captaincy. Before that, they were ordinary.

I think India are the best home team in the world currently.
 
At Home, India is a top side. Probably the best in the world. It's more down to the culture and confidence than the calibre of the present team. For example, I don't think Kohli is an astute captain who knows how to win from difficult situations even in India. Even our batsmen (excluding Pujara) are not great players of spin. It's actually our fast bowlers who have upped their game (Shami, Bumrah, Bhuvi, Ishant, Umesh) and the spinners are top class anyway (Ashwin, Jadeja). The fielding has improved in general, but the slip catching is not great either. Lots to improve.

This question is asking about which team has historically been the best home team, and that is clearly not the case. If you want to say that the current Indian team is the best team at home ever, you may have a point but that is not the question

I know. But I just wanted to make sure I stated that Virat's india is the best home team ever.

Historically it's Aussies. would be india or west indies number 2?

From 1989 to 2000 India lost no series at home. Their first loss in 11 years was the loss to SA in 2000.

SL has not won a test in India. NZ hasn't won a series. Australia has one series win since 1969. Thats how dominant India has been at home.

In last 3 decades we have lost 3 test series at home.
 
India, a sub-continent team that uses its home conditions to its fullest advantage.

3 - 0 or at max 3 - 1 with Eng winning one test, India is too strong at home.
 
India are having a golden run at home. Before them Pakistan were considered unbeatable at home till 1995 when S.L won. From 1981 till 1995 they didn't lost a home series. West Indies too were formidable at home from 1973 till 1995.
I think India has to do a lot more...a few more years.

They already did. it is not years that matters. It is the number of series that matters. India has won 16 in a row. Next best is 10 in a row by Australia.
 
An excellent stat to bust the claim that India's home dominance is *only* due to spin and raging turners.

I think India tries to take the most home advantage whenever they play on their home ground by creating overly spinning tracks. It would be interesting if they make a green track and win on such a wicket.

Overly spinning tracks often backfired on India. It makes average spinners look good. Pitches that helps just enough spin is the one that helps India due to the variations of Ashwin and Jadeja.

Overly spinning tracks is what the touring teams fear, they prepare for it, thinking every ball is going to turn and sometimes they fail to bat properly on a slow pitch which doesn't turns much. It's all a psychological battle. At home India also beat teams through the mind.
 
Current India team( from 2013 onwards) is best ever home test team in the world cricket .
They are ahead of great westindies ( 1980-95) and Ruthless Australia team of 2000s
 
England started doing Bazball. This will be an interesting series against England this time. Definitely, the advantage goes to India but this is a different approach from englishmen this time.

Australia have lost 3 series at home in the last 7 years.

The hardest place in the world to win a Test series.

In the last 10 years, Indians have been helped by having the best Asian team in history. 3 losses in 27 years were not bad, but a very good team in the last 10 years made it more impressive.

Simply said, Ashwin, Jajeda, Kohli, and Bumrah will be lock in the all-time Asian XI. I don't think we can find any instance of any Asian team playing 4 players at their peak like this at the same time who will be shoe-in for the all-time Asian XI.

Probably. Two spin all-rounders are higher for me as a player when compared to Kumble. I don't think Kumble will ever be a candidate for a post for me.

Bowling is at a different level from the current team and batting is surely inferior. But they don't cancel each other out as reflected in their respective records.
 
Indeed, India is very strong in their home conditions but equally vulnerable in SENA countries.

Not as vulnerable in SENA countries as they are in India. Also, we have won our last 2 series in Australia, drew our last series in England and SA which needless to say, they have not been able to replicate in India.

So your statement is far off the mark.

(This is a bowling attack manufactured off the top of my head without deep diving into stats.)
 
Statistically since 1 Jan 2005 (19 years), India has the best win-loss ratio at home. (5.9).

Next is Australia with 4.8 followed by England with 2.5

Apologies, statsguru considers the two finals India lost as home games. So the ratio is higher.

Agreed. Excellent variety in home conditions - legspin, offspin and left arm spin. Also batting up to 9...10 if you agree Kumble can hold an end up.

Going abroad, I'd have to look at stats but I'd likely drop Ashwin for Zaheer to get the different angle of a leftarmer in.
 
Yeah. They have been unbeatable at home for a long time. They also seem to have all bases covered with the bat and ball to form a complete attack at home.

That is an exceptional away record. India are the finest test team going and have been on top of their game for a very long time.

I doubt that Indians will replicate that in the next cycle. Batting was not great but it was decent and had experience.

Ashwin/Jadeja as all rounder combo come once in a blue moon. 550 wickets between them in the last 10 years in India/Srilanka/West Indies/Bangladesh at an average of 20.

Yah, both played a huge role in two series wins in Aus. Kept it tight, bowled lots of overs, and picked wickets. Visiting spinners normally don't do well in Aus. Also, both were responsible for helping India get win/draw with their bat as well.

Lots of posters may take it for granted, but plenty of things were aligned for India to win in Aus. Aus is a hard place to win a series, especially with their excellent bowling. Indians won two back-to-back series and both spin all-rounders played a big part.

Except for Bumrah, all other gun players are on their last leg. Yah, the Indians may be able to replace batting but two gun all-rounders and Shami/Sharma etc bowling well in that period to support Bumrah may be very hard to replicate. All conditions bowling attack is extremely rare and India mainly relied on that to do well when playing away. Batting was not that great in this period.
 
The legacy is already built. The GOAT Asian Test team(2015-2024) has achieved following things:-

1. Won all the home series played against each opponent during this period.
2. Won all the away tours to Sri Lanka and West Indies.
3. Won two test series in Australia.
4. Drew one test series in England and lost one in England.
5. Drew one test series in South Africa and lost two in South Africa although very competitive in both.
6. Lost the only tour to New Zealand.
7. Reached two WTC Finals and on its way to make it to third WTC Finals.

Not sure a team losing the WC final on their own turf qualifies as GOAT material.

Conquering India on their home turf is widely regarded as one of the most challenging achievements in international cricket.

yes they are but only in Test cricket in white ball nobody can have a better home advantage than Australia.

I would say, India has travelled very well in the last 4-5 years. Now if you are comparing with home performance then it's not going to get even close.

Again my time spans greater than current...12 odd years ago we were spanked 8-0, but importantly lessons were learnt from it. Only KP and Swann have overcome Ind in the last 20 years...

Yah, then only two teams have travlled well since 1990. Aus and SA. SA is still W/L above 1 due to historic good team and I think it will come down below 1 soon based on current trend. Only Aus will be left with W/L above 1 since 1990.
 
Time for Pakistan to come back in their rightful place as a part of India if they want to improve their home record.

Anyways the last semblance of self respect is gone and now they're just licking the boots of white masters.
