[PICTURES] Multan Sultans PSL 8 | Squad and Discussion Thread

Finally qualified but feels like a disappointing season so far. The bowlers don't seem good enough and in those pressure moments I don't think Multan have played that well.

I think Lahore is running away with these years PSL, but Islamabad has an outside chance, they've shown more fight/determination and are capable of changing the game with their lower order too. I don't see any other team winning it, and it's strange usually so consistent and dominant in the qualifying stages in recent years, this time it's been scrappy and will probably go into the last four as underdogs along with Zalmi, which on paper Multan should have been streets ahead of.

They will reach the final again, so will LQ. If they can win the toss and make LQ chase, they'll have a huge chance.

Interesting they've dropped Shan recently - I wonder if he'll make his way back in the team for the final though.

Multan Sultans team manager Haider Azhar has been handed a one-match suspension for a level 3 breach of the HBL PSL Code of Conduct for Players and Player Support Personnel.

Haider was found to have violated article 2.13, which relates to personal abuse of a player, player support personnel, umpire or match referee during an HBL PSL match.

The incident occurred after the end of the HBL PSL 8 final when Haider confronted the two on-field umpires and abused Alex Wharf. Haider contested the sanction imposed by match referee Roshan Mahanama, but it was upheld after a hearing took place in the PCB Board Room.

Mr Roshan Mahanama: “It is truly disappointing that this outstanding tournament has ended with a team manager’s misdemeanour getting him banned for a match. Haider Azhar’s actions were totally against the values and spirit of this beautiful game and it is my responsibility to make sure such transgressions are dealt firmly.

Drikus Saaiman appointed as fielding and S&C coach

2 December 2023

Multan Sultans have appointed Drikus Saaiman as the fielding and strength and conditioning coach for the upcoming edition of the HBL Pakistan Super League.

Saaiman, who was born in Bloemfontein, brings in heaps of experience to the franchise. He is currently working with the Pakistan men’s team and has been part of the Pakistan women’s and South Africa men’s coaching staffs.

He was strength and conditioning and fielding coach with Nelson Mandela Bay Giants, an Mzansi Super League franchise, in 2018 and has had stints with South Africa’s A and emerging sides.

Drikus Saaiman: “I am very excited to be joining Multan Sultans and looking forward to my time at what will be my first stint at an HBL PSL franchise.

“Multan Sultans boast some of the best T20 cricketers and a fantastic coaching staff. I am eager to join this dressing room, and play my role in helping this wonderful team through my experience. I am sure that being here will also help me further grow as a coach.”

General Manager Hijab Zahid: “Drikus Saaiman is a highly-reputable coach and it gives me great pleasure to welcome him on board. It is pertinent to provide your players with the best facilities if you expect them to win you competitions and this is another step in that direction. With this announcement, we have now completed a highly knowledgeable, skilled and respected coaching team that will definitely benefit our players across all rungs.”

Dull cricket. Dull franchise

Fortunes of MS changed once Alamgir Tareen took over. Now that he's passed away and Ali Tareen taking back the role, he is more about doing PR campaigns rather than building a team. Letting Flower go was the first blunder. Not expecting much from MS this season.

Multan Sultans make strategic trade deal

In a strategic move to further strengthen domestic spin bowling stocks and acquire the best picks in HBL PSL 9 Player Draft, Multan Sultans management has traded Shan Masood for the first pick in Diamond category, the second pick in Silver category as well as Multan-born left-arm wrist spinner Faisal Akram. Karachi Kings have gotten Multan Sultans’ fourth pick in the first Diamond round.

Multan Sultans now have two picks - second and fourth - in the first Silver round. The team had previously bagged the first Platinum pick of this year’s draft in a trade deal with Quetta Gladiators.

Faisal, a member of Pakistan squad in the previous ICC U19 Men’s Cricket World Cup, has 24 List A wickets and five T20 wickets.

Chief Executive Ali Khan Tareen: “This has been one of the most exciting trade and retention windows in the history of the HBL Pakistan Super League and we are delighted with how our line-up is shaping. We had two agendas for this trade window: focus on buildinging a strong domestic core and getting the best possible picks in the HBL PSL 9 Player Draft in order to get the best overseas players to compliment our team combination.

These stellar draft picks plus our local core sets us up to build a solid squad for the HBL PSL 9 and beyond.

“I am over the moon to have finally gotten Faisal Akram in our team. We have been working with him since he was 16. He has been a regular at our academy and camps. He is an extraordinary talent and we are yet to see his best. Now he is part of our team for the next many years, our goal will be to develop him into a national asset."

“I want to thank Shan Masood who has been the longest serving member of the Sultans family. He has been our captain and a huge part of our success. We will definitely miss him and wish him the best in his new team."

Multan Sultans have retained seven players as the retention and trade window for the HBL PSL 9 closed earlier today.

Sticking to its philosophy of creating a core around the best domestic players, Multan Sultans management has retained Mohammad Rizwan (captain) in Platium and he is joined by Iftikhar Ahmed.

Khushdil Shah and Usama Mir are retained in Diamond category.

Faisal Akram joins Abbas Afridi and Ihsanullah in the Gold category.

Ihsanullah has been made brand ambassador.

Dahani deserves more chances. For no reason he was dropped from t20 and odi. He got very little game time.

As for the squad this looks the strongest by far.

I think iftimania would get a lot of limelight here in Ms. If he delivers then MS can become a hot contender for PSL trophy.

The guy is brainless and he is going backwards with the rubbish he bowls. He has stopped bowling the hard length on off stump and now looks totally lost
But still he has pace. 135 to 145 and he is still fairly young. Deserves more time

Exactly. He hasn't improved one bit. In fact he has gotten more 'smash me harder next' type. Don't know why everyone wants him in the team. He isn't even a top domestic performer

Fasial Akram will make the xi as the emerging category. Also now that Shan isn't in the squad anymore it will be interesting draft selections.

Retentions look kind of weak tbh. Iftikhar feels like a downgrade on Rilee, don't mind him as a player, but he hasn't been putting the output of a Platinum player in PSLs so far.

Feels weakest squad for Multan for a long time and Flower is gone too.

Faisal Akram coming in is a good trade imo, specially with Rizwan, Mushtaq & Flower. However swapping Ifti for Rilee Rossouw is the absurd swap possible.

It reeks of stupidity & lack of planning. Rossouw is a brilliant T20 league player.

Flower isn't involved with MS this year.

First pick in Platinum

My guess is that they will go for Hendricks
