Imam batting on 111 in Balochistan’s 193-3

Lahore, 16 September 2019:

Imam-ul-Haq scored his fifth first-class century as Balochistan crawled to 191 for three on penultimate day of the four-day Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match against Sindh at the UBL Sports Complex on Monday.

At stumps, Imam was batting on 111 but Balochistan were still 282 runs behind Sindh’s first innings score of 473 for five declared. In 90 overs today, the visitors scored 175 runs for the loss of three wickets.

The left-handed opener had resumed at his overnight score of nine and to date, he has faced 269 balls off which 13 have been converted into fours. He reached three figures from 235 balls with 12 fours.

Imam added 71 runs for the third wicket with captain Haris Sohail, who scored 24. Azeem Ghumman was the other notable batsman with 21.

For Sindh, Kashif Bhatti took two wickets for 61 runs.

Scores in brief:

Sindh 473-5d, 169.5 overs (Abid Ali 249 not out, Khurram Manzoor 105, Sarfaraz Ahmed 44 not out, Asad Shafiq 37; Yasir Shah 3-127)

Balochistan 191-3, 98 overs (Imam-ul-Haq 111 not out, Haris Sohail 24, Azeem Ghumman 21, Imran Farhat 16 not out, Kashif Bhatti 2-61)

Central Punjab in pickle despite Umar, Azhar, Shehzad half-centuries

Lahore, 16 September 2019:

Central Punjab were 348 for five in reply to Southern Punjab’s mammoth first-innings score of 467 when stumps were drawn on day three of the four-day first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match at Lahore’s Gaddafi Stadium.

Umar Akmal and Ahmed Shehzad celebrated their call-up in the 20-player provisional squad for this month’s series against Sri Lanka by hitting impressive half-centuries.

Umar Akmal hit a blistering 89 with 10 fours and two sixes, while Ahmed, who started the day at the score of 22, was dismissed after scoring 63 from 168 balls with eight fours.

Azhar Ali was the other batsman to get to a half-century, scoring 73 off 157 balls with 10 fours. He had started the day at 20 and together with Ahmed, put on 130 runs for the first wicket, which came to an end in the afternoon session when the former captain nicked Aamer Yamin’s wide delivery to wicketkeeper Adnan Akmal.

Forty-two runs later and on the first ball after drinks, Shehzad lobbed Rahat Ali’s length delivery on his body to Sami Aslam, who guarded the mid-wicket region.

Rahat struck again, picking up prized wicket of Central Punjab captain Babar Azam. The other end, however, was held firmly by Umar, who batted one-down. The 29-year-old fell 11 runs short of what would have been a fascinating century when he edged Rahat (three for 34) to Adnan.

The hard-hitting batsman was quick to pounce on anything loose that slow left-arm orthodox Mohammad Irfan and leg-spinner Zahid Mahmood bowled, breathing life in the crowd perched in the Fazal Mahmood and Abdul Hafeez Kardar stands.

Aamer, who had brought a threatening opening-stand to an end, struck again as the sun set on the Gaddafi Stadium by removing Kamran Akmal (33). This proved to be the final wicket of the day.

Central Punjab, trailing by 119 runs, find themselves in a pickle in the first round match, which is being live streamed on the PCB’s YouTube channel, as they managed only 348 for five in 108 overs. To equal Southern Punjab’s five batting bonus points, they are required to cross the 500-run mark in the next two overs.

By the virtue of dismissing all Southern Punjab batsmen in the first innings, Central Punjab have three bonus points in the bag. If they cross the 350-run mark inside 110 overs, it would take their bonus points tally to seven.

Southern Punjab, after crossing the 400-run mark and managing five wickets, have six points thus far.

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa firmly in control

Abbottabad, 16 September 2019:

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa were firmly in control of their four-day first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match against Northern at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium on Monday.

Led by left-arm spinner Zohaib Khan and Test paceman Junaid Khan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa bowlers sent Northern packing for 262 in 90.3 overs in the first innings. And with a commanding 264-run lead, Mohammad Rizwan asked the Imad Wasim-led Northern to follow on.

Northern were 105-2 in their second innings at the close of the third day’s play. They still require another 159 runs to make Khyber Pakhtunkhwa bat again. The unbeaten batsmen at the stumps were Umar Amin (32) and Pakistan Under-19 captain Rohail Nazir (21).

Openers Haider Ali (27) and Afaq Raheem (21) were the batsmen dismissed. Zohaib and Adil Amin shared Northern’s second innings wickets thus far.

Earlier, Northern batsmen wilted under pressure of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s mammoth first innings score of 526-9 declared.

None of the batsmen – barring debutant Haider Ali and Imad – were successful in making an impression.

Haider, who was 56 not out overnight, was unlucky to miss a century on his first-class debut by just one run. The 18-year-old right-handed opener faced 208 balls and hit 11 fours and two sixes in his 297-minute stay at the wicket. Imad scored 33 down the order.

Northern could bag only two bonus points for crossing the 250-run mark in their first innings, whereas, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa also earned three bonus points for bowling out Northern.

Rizwan used his bowlers well. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s pace cum spin attack not only kept the run-rate in check but also claimed wickets at regular intervals.

Zohaib was the pick of the bowlers, claiming three wickets for just 21 runs in 15 overs. Junaid had 3-40 while leg-break bowler Irfan Khan took two wickets, including Haider’s scalp.

Tuesday is the fourth and final day of the match.

Scores in brief:

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa 526-9d, 136.4 overs (Mohammad Rizwan 176, Ashfaq Ahmed 106, Adil Amin 73, Iftikhar Ahmed 35, Fakhar Zaman 33, Sahibzada Farhan 29; Shadab Khan 4-151)

Northern 262 all-out, 90.3 overs (Haider Ali 99, Imad Wasim 33, Afaq Raheem 25, Umar Amin 20; Zohaib Khan 3-21, Junaid Khan 3-40, Irfan Khan 2-69) and 105-2, 39 overs (Umar Amin 32 not out, Haider Ali 27, Rohail Nazir 21 not out, Afaq Raheem 21)

Azizullah fined for deliberate physical contact

Lahore, 16 September 2019:

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s fast-bowler Azizullah has been fined 25 per cent of his match fee for a level 1 offence relating to inappropriate and deliberate physical contact with a player, player support personnel during his side’s three-day Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match against Northern at the KRL Stadium in Rawalpindi.

The incident happened on Sunday and at the end of the 68th over of the Northern innings when Aziz made a deliberate physical contact with the batsman running towards the non-striker’s end for a single.

Azizullah was charged by on-field umpires Faisal Afridi and Ahsan Raza at the end of second day’s play for violating article 2.12 of the PCB Code of Conduct for Players and Player support Personnel.

Azizullah accepted the charge and the fine imposed on him by match referee Kamran Chaudhry.

What the hell is this middle order Northern is playing?

Amin - decent but not a #3
Rohail - what? big time hack
Nawaz - joke
Asif Ali - good for 20 balls

The selection of batsmen in their first XI squad are quite poor. Umar Amin, Afaq Raheem, Ali Asad, Ali Sarfraz, Asif Ali, Haider Ali, Hammad Azam, Rohail Nazir, Umar Waheed plus Imad, Nawaz and Shadab.

They have Faizan Riaz in their 2nd XI who has had a couple of decent seasons recently and has been scoring big runs in club cricket for a while, would be an upgrade on some of these names. Hasan Raza (the top-order batsman from Azad Kashmir) made 75 in the 2nd XI game. Zeeshan Malik on the bench for the 2nd XI. Umair Masood on the bench also due to Rohail (1st XI) and Jamal Anwar (2nd XI). There's a few more names like Sarmad Bhatti and Shoaib Ahmed.

Their bowling is the stronger suit for sure.

They have no strong suit. Most of their best players are in 2nd XI or bench.

The pacers may have taken the wickets for South Punjab, but make no mistake the spinners (Irfan Jailer and Zahid Mehmood) bowled beautifully. Were relentless in their control and made national team players uncomfortable. But for poor umpiring they would have had a couple of wickets between them.

about time. Only way these batsmen are going to learn to play long innings.
It is interesting to see how many balls batsmen will last.

I was reading stats

2017 season domestic season(top ranked teams) first avg innings total

South Africa 381
England 318
India 341
Australia 307
NZ 302

Pakistan 2016- 279

2018 - 261

Yep they will learn how to play a long innings but then will lose the ability to actually a play long innings any where other than the UAE. I mean look at Australia for example, the pitches are roads and yet with the exception of Steve Smith who is a freak the rest of them can't play a swinging or seaming ball to save themselves. Say what to want about Pakistani batsmen but they have generally performed pretty well in England at least compared to other countries. Don't expect good results there next year if the entire domestic season will be played on roads

True our batsmen did well in last two England test tours

Yes agree. Gradually these roads will need to have a bit more pace and bounce.
Just winning in England isn't everything. What about everywhere else where they have play on roads and they fail to bat 60 overs never mind 90.
Our ranking and results clearly shows that something needed to change.

Well I would distinguish between hard and soft roads. These domestic pitches are soft roads with low bounce, whereas in Australia they have hard roads where there is more bounce but the ball generally still doesn't move laterally at all.

well just seen the Punjab game finish in draw... Sami Aslam 270 not out and then 50 not out..i think his average is about to go sky high!!!

he averages in the mid 30s in FC cricket. Sami Aslam, Imam and others need to score big runs consistently.
Will be interesting to see who has been consistent end of the FC season.

There is a diamond cricket gound which has got the best pitches in Pakistan. Bounce and pace.

Due to petty poltics of PCB and Islamabad cricket adminstration, northern are playing their home matches in Faislabad or KRL stadium.

Pathetic by PCB

Abbottabad, 17 September 2019:

Asif Ali and Mohammad Nawaz cracked centuries to earn a draw for Northern against Khyber Pakhtunkhwa on the fourth and final day of their first round match in the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy at the Abbottabad Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.

Beginning the proceedings at their overnight score of 105-2, Northern batted the whole day to be on 433-6 in 114 overs at the end.

The Imad Wasim-led team were forced to follow-on after being dismissed for 262 in their first innings.

That was in response to Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s only knock of 526-9 declared.

Asif, a hard-hitting batsman who has represented Pakistan in white-ball cricket, scored 114 – his second century at this level. The right-hander’s 133-ball aggressive knock was punctuated with 18 fours and 3 sixes, and came in 172 minutes.

The left-handed Nawaz also played a stroke-filled innings, hammering 15 fours and 2 sixes to be unbeaten on exactly 100 that came off 126 deliveries. This was his fifth century in first-class cricket

Asif and Nawaz put on 118 runs for the fifth-wicket. Asif also shared an 86-run stand for the fourth wicket with Umar Amin, another left-handed batsman.

Fresh wickets at the start of the tournament, I think we might see bit more balance between bat and bowl going forward.

There is a lot of good batsmen who have missed out as well. So it will be interesting to see who scorers consistently and big 100s.

Dude scoring runs on such tracks doesn't make you a better batsman. Mohammad Hafeez averaged around 50 in UAE(test), that doesn't mean he was a world class opener. We saw him struggling outside Asia and especially against Steyn in South Africa.

Slow and low flat pitches with Kookabora balls is a disaster. I won't argue with anyone on this anymore.

The four-day first-class Quaid-e-Azam Trophy match between Central Punjab and Southern Punjab at the Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore ended in a draw.

Southern Punjab were 107 for one in their second innings with Sami Aslam and Umar Siddiq batting on 50 and 18, respectively, when the two captains shook hands.

Southern Punjab’s only wicket to fall, and the only batsman to be dismissed twice in this match, was their captain Shan Masood, who scored 32 runs before getting trapped LBW by Zafar Gohar.

Earlier in the day, Mohammad Saad and Faheem Ashraf resumed their innings at 30 and 41, respectively. The pair knitted an 80-run partnership in 116 balls. It was their stand that helped Central Punjab, which started the day at 348 for five, score 473 all-out in response to Southern Punjab’s 467 all-out.

Saad, the first-ever concussion replacement in the history of Pakistan’s first-class cricket, added 29 runs to his overnight score to finish with 70 off 208 balls with 11 fours.

Faheem scored his sixth first-class half-century, hitting nine fours, as he scored runs in 53 balls.

With the Gaddafi Stadium’s pitch deteriorating, the remaining five Central Punjab wickets were picked by spinners. Southern Punjab spinners Mohammad Irfan, the slow left-arm orthodox, and Zahid Mahmood, the leg-spinner, took all of their wickets on Tuesday, returning four for 120 and one for 130 respectively.

Both teams bagged 11 points, five of which came from the draw.

Southern Punjab got five for scoring more than 400 runs inside 110 overs and Central Punjab got four for scoring between 350 and 400. Central Punjab, however, had the upper hand in the bonus bowling points as they were awarded two points for picking six wickets in 110 overs. Southern Punjab managed were given only one point for taking five wickets.

In the second round, which begins from 21 September, Central Punjab faces Northern in Faisalabad and Southern Punjab go to Quetta to play Balochistan.

Scores in brief:

Southern Punjab 467 all-out, 134 overs (Sami Aslam 243 not out, Adnan Akmal 113, Aamer Yamin 64; Waqas Maqsood 4-83, Hasan Ali 3-100, Bilal Asif 2-116) and 107-1 (Sami Aslam 50, Shan Masood 32)

Central Punjab 473 all-out, 150.1 overs (Umar Akmal 89, Azhar Ali 73, Mohammad Saad 70, Ahmed Shehzad 63, Faheem Ashraf 56; Mohammad Irfan (SLA) 4-120, Rahat Ali 3-72, Aamer Yamin 2-68)

KPK used 10 bowlers in second innings against Northern. Is this some sort of record? Abdullah719

They should have different conditions in different grounds. Prepare a green track in northern grounds. Flatter and slower ones in Lahore. Bouncy ones in Sindh. Balanced track in Quetta.

Ideally tracks should be of the standard of Seddon Park in New Zealand. That pitch starts Green then gets very bouncy then starts turning, that's why it's rated number 1 pitch in the world.
