Ok...Dawn reporting the incident on their website....

At least 11 people were killed and 30 others injured when a huge fire erupted at Karachi's Regent Plaza hotel early Monday, rescue officials said.

The blaze broke out in the kitchen located at the ground floor of the four-star hotel at the city's Shahrah-i-Faisal, and swept through the building, trapping scores of hotel guests in their rooms.

Three fire tenders of the fire brigade reached the site and started an operation to rescue the guests. The firefighters were able to contain the fire after three hours, with 11 people having been killed, said Faisal Edhi of the Edhi Foundation.

At least 65 people affected by the fire were brought to the emergency department, said Dr Seemin Jamali, head of the emergency services at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre while talking to DawnNews.

Amongst those were people who had fractured bones after jumping from hotel windows to escape, others had been hurt by shattered glass and many were treated for smoke inhalation, she said.

She said 10 bodies had been brought into the hospital. Six men including three doctors and four women are among the dead. Three foreigners affected by the fire are in a stable condition, said Jamali.

The rescue operation has not ended, and some people are still reportedly trapped inside the hotel.

The cause of fire is yet to be ascertained.

"Hotel had no fire exit or fire alarm"- mayor of Karachi

Isn't it government job to make sure such precautionary measurement are implemented?

Pakistani cricketers and foreigners among injured in #Karachi hotel blaze :(

I heard cricketer Karamat Ali is injured.

Sohaib Maqsood and his team members were in the hotel as well, hope all are safe.

Inna Lilah e Wa ina Elehi Rajiun

Somebody needs to be held accountable for this debacle....It seemed as if there were no fire prevention protocols in place AT ALL !!!!!!

It also seems that the staff had no fire emergency training and it was total chaos during the entire thing !! Allegedly there are reports that a domestic team was staying up in the hotel at the moment and had to be evacuated with immediate effect !! Understandably they might not take the field today due to this traumatic catastrophe.

The fact there was a School almost 18-20 feet away from the hotel is another cause of concern for such things to happen amongst untrained staff..

PAKISTAN'S international cricket star Sohaib Maqsood has reportedly saved a family after a huge fire started in a four-star hotel at a popular holiday destination, leaving 11 dead and more than 50 injured according to police reports.

The blaze swept through a Karachi’s Regent Plaza Hotel in Pakistan after a fire started in the kitchen quickly engulfed the ground floor, trapping guests in their rooms.

Local reports suggest four women and seven men are among the dead, including three doctors who tried to help the casualties escape the inferno.

Among the hotel guests were members of the United Bank Limited cricket team, some of whom were injured in the blaze.

It took emergency services around four hours to extinguish the fire, with rescue workers helping almost 100 people escape the blaze via a crane.

Hotel guests tied towels together to form a makeshift rope in a desperate bid to scramble to safety.

Dr Seemin Jamali, head of emergecy services at the Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre, said three foreign citizens are among the dead.

He said: “Most of the deaths were caused by suffocation”.

RIP to the victims.

Good on Sohaib, hope him and the family are safe.

Pakistan middle order batsmen Sohaib Maqsood and Umar Amin were injured during a stampede triggered in the wake of an overnight blaze that erupted in Karachi’s Regent Plaza hotel on Monday (Today).

It should be mentioned here that the cricketers are part of UBL team. They were staying at the hotel to take part in Quaid-e-Azam Trophy.

The UBL team will not play its match scheduled for today.

Meantime, Under-19 player Yaseen got a fracture in his leg after he jumped from the floor to save his life.

The hotel caught fire early Monday morning and left 11 people including three doctors and four women dead. Over 75 people were wounded during the stampede as they tried to stay clear of the fire. Several people jumped from the upper floors of the hotel.

The match between UBL and HBL of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy at NBP Stadium, Karachi has been abandoned

Lahore- December 5, 2016: The match between UBL and HBL of the Super Eight round of Quaid-e-Azam Trophy at NBP Stadium, Karachi has been abandoned due to fire erupted in a hotel where the players are staying. Nadeem Khan, Manager UBL has made a request to the PCB to abandon the match as the players are not in a condition to resume the match. The PCB’s domestic committee has accepted the request and therefore both teams are awarded one point each for no result.

Inna Lillahi wa Inna ilaihi raajioon.

May Allah give shifah to all the injured.Pretty worrying that the hotel didn't have basic stuff like fire alarms installed.

Condolences to families and friends of the deceased.

Seems like sever safety breaches and according to reports there had been no emergency exit in the building.

People only take notice when we have tragedy like this, sadly its par for the course in PK.

Regent is one of the fanciest places in the city, if such a place has no safety protocols then I shudder to think what the situation might be in other places.

Inna lillahi wa inna ilahi raji'oon. May Allah grant the highest place in Jannah to the victims and afford their families the patience to bare this loss.

Holy smokes Hammad Azam seems like he shook hands with the angel of death. Completely shot. I hope him and everybody are able to put this tragedy behind them in minimum possible time.

Incredible.

How do these places pass their safety investigations - backhanders I guess?

KARACHI, Pakistan—A massive fire swept through a four-star hotel in the southern port city of Karachi on Monday, killing at least 11 people, officials said.

More than 50 people suffered injuries in the early morning blaze, which started in the hotel kitchen, police officer Tauqeer Naeem said.

The exact cause of the fire has yet to be determined, he said, adding that four of those killed were women.

Dr. Semi Jamali at Jinnah Hospital in Karachi said some foreigners were among those being treated for burns. Suffocation caused more deaths, she said.

TV footage of the incident showed guests at the hotel using bedsheets to climb down from windows.

“We tied the bed sheets together to make a rope, and used that to climb down from the fourth floor,” said Khalid Mehmood, one of the injured, speaking from his hospital bed. “We also had to jump midway, as the bed sheets weren’t long enough.”

A man standing at a balcony was seen waving for help but the hotel didn’t have the ability to reach him, a survivor, Hamid Ali, told a local Pakistani TV channel.

He said guests were sleeping when the fire broke out.

“[For] four to five hours everybody was looking helpless, crying for help and nobody was there to help them,” said another of the injured, Muhammad Saeed, who was under treatment at the hospital.

Several Pakistani cricket players were also staying at the hotel, and one of them broke his ankle when he jumped down, said Mr. Naeem, the police officer.

It is AS human life is AS important AS animal life in Pakistan. Feel really sad that these things keep happening.

Pakistan cricketer Sohaib Maqsood, who has played 26 ODIs and 20 T20Is, had a narrow escape as the hotel where he was staying in Karachi caught fire.

At least 11 people, including three women, were killed and 75 others injured when a huge fire here ripped through a four-star hotel, the fourth blaze to hit Pakistan’s largest city in the last two weeks.

The blaze broke out in the kitchen located at the ground floor of the Regent Plaza hotel at the city’s Shahrah-i- Faisal and spread across the six-floor building, trapping nearly 100 hotel guests in their rooms.

Three fire tenders of the fire brigade reached the site and started an operation to rescue the guests. The firefighters were able to contain the fire after three hours, with 11 people having been killed, said Faisal Edhi of the Edhi Foundation.

A crucial match of the Quaid-e-Azam Trophy was abandoned after members of the competing teams in the tournament suffered trauma and injuries due to the incident.

Two teams, United bank and Sui Southern Gas, were staying at the Hotel Regent. Three members of the UBL team including Pakistan all-rounder Hammad Azam, spinner Yasim Murtaza and Karamat suffered injuries while trying to escape from the fire while other players were traumatized by the experience included Pakistani batsmen Shaan Masood and Sohaib Maqsood.

A team official said Yasim Murtaza had jumped from the second floor to escape the fire and fractured his leg while

Hammad wounded his feet while trying to break the glass windows to find an escape route. The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) announced that the manager of the United bank team had requested for the match to be abandoned as the players were too traumatized to take further part in the match.

Because of the abandonment of the match UBL are now out of the final contention

Mayor of Karachi Waseem Akhtar visited the site of the incident and while talking to media, he said the fire has been contained but the cause of the fire could not be determined as of yet. He said rescue work was hampered due to absence of an emergency exit and spread of heavy smoke.

Last week, the largest metropolis of the country witnessed what was the third reported blaze in the last 10 days.

A three-storey building being used as a warehouse of medicines and chemicals caught fire on December 2.

On Saturday, two surveyors were killed as a fire, preceded by a blast, erupted at a methanol storage tank located near the port in Keamari.

Earlier, on November 23, a similar incident occurred near Gate No 2 in two storage tanks that were reportedly operated by Shell Oil Marketing Company.

:)) safety investigations in this country?

I got my driving license without even passing my signs board test................

Sad news. More often, it's the asphyxiating fumes that cause most deaths rather than the fire itself. Hope the guys are able to put this behind.

RIP.

Scandalous really isn't it and explains why things like safety inspections at hotels are an afterthought.
