Unacceptable playing conditions (and living ones too)

I feel for them but its pretty hilarious at the same time, I have never seen such thing on a cricket ground before.

Pretty poor scheduling by BCCI considering its a known fact at least for Indians that delhi suffers with smog this time of the year and they could have gone for a lot of other venues. ICC should definitely take a look which according to me is one of the most incompetent sports bodies of the world so I have serious doubts that they will.

Thing is except Lankans no one is needing the masks.Neither Indians nor the Umpires.

The Lankans have been so throughly owned that they now just want to leave the ground.

And they are asking an Indian doctor whether play should carry on under Smog and his answer is obvious I guess as he is also a cricket fanatic and his team is doing well. :ashwin

May be but why make the touring team uneasy by playing under smog which is not good for health and its a known fact. They could have gone for another venue, no excuse here.

I think we should let them go back to Sri Lanka. I live here conditions were same on the first day also. Just let them go they can't take it anymore. Chandimal is a drama queen.

I think it just a ploy to get the game called off as an innings defeat looks imminent again for Sri Lanka ..

Yes only Lankans are wearing masks. No one else. This is next level chickening out.

The air quality in Delhi was really bad a couple of weeks ago but now it is not the way it has been made out to be by Sri Lanka .. Sri Lanka should just play at home .. Maybe that way they might win or at least draw a game ..

No one else is having a issue.

They wanted to play few mind games.

Yes.They are one of the most whining teams.

Please get a clue. The pollution levels in North India are at catastrophic levels. I'm here in Lucknow where the pollution is just as bad if not worse than Delhi and I can't move out for even half an hour without a mask otherwise I'd get a choked throat and chest pain in a hour or two.

The PM 2.5 level is hovering around 200 for the past month when the safe limit for general population is 50. Sometimes it goes above 250 as well. Please don't trivialize the situation that your own countrymen are facing by your petty agenda and sheer cluelessness on the issue.

No need to shame them for wearing masks. Indians should be grateful they are still playing. Otherwise delhi does not deserve to hold any event with such horrible pollution.

just because indians are ok with breathing in polluted air, doesn't mean every visitor should do the same.

Delhi, most horrible city in more ways than one.

pathetic post.

Smog does have an affect on your health, to this underwise is just being ignorant.

Indians should be happy that these players are wearing mask, because of this the issue is broadcasted to everyone and people are aware of how bad smog actually is.

i find it pathetic how indians wil even defend their pollution

Its good to read an unbiased post by an Indian about the situation. Well done bro.

I do not need to know about my country from you.You can keep running your agenda.

Match should be abandoned IMO. At least it would wake up some high level people to take some drastic measures.

The Smog seems to effect only the Lankans. Not Indian players. Not the umpires. Not the 15k plus spectators.

As I said, get a clue about stuff you're posting. Take a Rajdhani from Kolkata to Delhi, and tell me how you feel after spending a day out in the open without a mask. If not, don't bother speaking for people who are actually living there and facing the pollution on a daily basis.

I really hope this is a tight slap on the face of delhi/Indian admin. It is beyond ridiculous to even have arranged+gone ahead with a match in such circumstances.

I actually own a house in Green Park which i do visit once in 2 months.Last was in November.Sorry cannot waste 16hrs in train for your sake.

Delhi is a gas chamber. Anyone who says otherwise is either lying or ignorant.

( I stay near Delhi )

As we speak the Air Quality Index in Delhi is between 250-350 in various parts of Delhi. For reference, anything above 300 is an absolute emergency which should result in a total shut down. But for some people this is perfectly normal and people taking steps to save their health are "whiners". Pathetic.

but cricektjoshilla claims to have more knowledge then anyone else.

his argument is, just because x is not taking precautions, it means the problem doesn't exist. Screw the articles and arguments that have been presented in the past by other people.

Air quality index is in 200+ range and these guys are just being hypochondriacs. Two weeks ago it was 1000+ that was bad.

I claimed i have more knowledge than you.

Delhi air was hazardous level in October even in early november. It has been ok since then.

Would like to see armchair critics like you running around on a cricket field in that air. Easy to act all macho behind your screen.

The air is not as bad as SL players are pretending it to be. Just "masking" their cricket failures here

Some Indians defending the pollution in India :))) now i have seen it all. Not surprising though. :salute:

Delhi is really a hell place to live. It is so polluted tht it made me to left my studies and came back home.

The air is not very bad? How bad it should be then to allow them to use masks? Lets just put a blindfold on our eyes and pretend that the air is perfectly fine.

So Lankans wearing masks is the measure of air quality?

There is a reason I have him on ignore.
The current pollution level in Delhi. http://aqicn.org/city/delhi/

The standard of air quality might be perfect for Indians but it might not be so for Srilankans. Whats the big deal?

The question though is, why wasn't this raised yesterday. The pollution levels are bad, no doubt. But creating this issue now, seems like whining.

To Delhites, has the pollution worsened since yesterday?

Delhi is polluted , but not more than what it is for weeks now after Diwali.

News on the issue:

Delhi air quality back to 'very poor': Sri Lanka players uneasy at Feroz Shah Kotla

The national capital woke up to a cold-polluted Sunday morning with minimum temperature recorded at 8 degrees Celsius, a notch below the season's average and a "very-poor" air-quality.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the sky will remain partly clouded with the maximum temperature likely to hover around 26 degrees Celsius.

Meanwhile the major pollutant concentration PM2.5, or particles with diameter less than 2.5 micrometers across Delhi-NCR at 9 a.m. was 218 units -- eight times more than the safe limit.

According to the Central Pollution Control Authority (CPCB), the air-quality fell under "severe-plus or emergency" levels at Anand Vihar in west Delhi with PM2.5 reaching 433 in the morning -- 17 times the safe limit, sector 125 Noida and Vasundhara in Ghaziabad.

In Delhi, Delhi Technical University (DTU) in north Delhi and R.K Puram in south-west Delhi fell under "severe" air-quality.

While monitoring agencies predict the air-pollution situation to worsen over days, respite is likely towards Tuesday with possibilities of light rains.

"The national capital is likely to witness light rainfall on Tuesday, which may improve the air-quality," an IMD official told IANS.

The humidity on Sunday at 8.30 a.m. was recorded at 92 per cent.

Saturday's minimum temperature was 7.4 degrees Celsius, two notches below the season's average while the maximum temperature was recorded at 26.4 degrees Celsius.

BUTBUTBUT this all has to be whining. How the hell can Sri Lankans who come from a country which has registered the best air quality in South Asia be affected by the catastrophic levels of pollution prevalent in Delhi? How can they be affected by doing strenuous physical activity when it's a challenge to take even a full breath without choking on pollutants?

Sri Lanka registers best air quality in South Asia

It's hilarious that a certain someone is STILL trying to trivialize the situation.

Maybe it worsened, or maybe Srilankans tried to play through it yesterday but couldnt take it any more. It is also possible that they didnt know about how bad it could be for them.

:)) Wow, *claps*

Comparing natural conditions to pollution which can poison your lungs. Amazing.

This is a new high for you.

Conditions are conditions.Running around in hot humid conditions is also not recommended for healthy living.

It has been around 200 level for sometime.

Let's be honest there - the umpires didn't seem to much of a problem, including the Brit Nigel Llong who has never been exposed to such pollution, and should have a low level of tolerance.

The Sri Lankans are undoubtedly struggling because they have been battered in the field for a long time, but they have done a good job of selling it to the umpires.

Can't blame them though, most teams would have done the same in this situation.

Earlier this month, i was in Delhi. Pollution levels were beyond pathetic

Considering the fact that it's winter, pollution levels may have abated, but will still be 4-5 times above WHO levels

Sure. Thats a possibility. But what about them actually faking it. Though I wouldn't blame them given they started moaning after being 500 for 5.

Slow claps

There is a reason it is called Test cricket, as you are supposed to play in foreign conditions. If Sri Lanka want the weather of Galle in New Delhi, then why even tour. They should stay in their own country.

Well the srilankans are still playing arent they? Its just that they are taking precautions. Whats wrong in it? Or are you saying the air quality is not bad at all?

Atleast the Indian govt. ,Is working towards curbing this problem and let's be honest here pollution is not just a problem in India it's the problem in general and can't be rectified in a day or two measures are being taken but it will take time.

No, you are using your irrational dislike for India to score some cheap points.

In so much pollution, merely standing for two days is also going to have an adverse effect on your health, especially if you come from a first world country that has never been subjected to such high levels of pollution in their entire history.

As I have already said, the Sri Lankan players are not faking it because they have been out in the field for very long and it is not easy at all. However, there is also no doubt that they have used to their convenience in order to get off the field as quickly as possible.

Kohli did the right thing by putting an end to this farce. Sri Lanka does not deserve humiliation to the point where their fielding coach ends up fielding.

I seriously cant believe people are defending this level of air quality. They are basically saying the air isn't polluted enough. It should be completely poisonous for you to use a mask.
