[PICTURES/VIDEO] Sri Lanka players come out wearing masks to protect against smog in Delhi!

Well the srilankans are still playing arent they? Its just that they are taking precautions. Whats wrong in it? Or are you saying the air quality is not bad at all?

Naach na jane, aangan teyda. The air is good enough for India to post 500 plus. Sri Lanka are looking for excuses.

I seriously cant believe people are defending this level of air quality. They are basically saying the air isnt polluted enough. It should be completely poisonous for you to use a mask.

There are others playing as well.

i took ill the first day when i landed in Delhi this winter. My roommate was chilling around feeling unaffected.

Does that mean I was whinning?

I had a bout 0f cold within 24hrs of my visit to london. London is hazardous?

If players are struggling to field then don't force them to play.

I don't care if others are perfectly fine. It's not about them.

Kohli is probably used to Delhi's pollution, but the fact that the British umpire was fine after standing in the field for two days is more than ample evidence that the SL players were exploiting the situation to their convenience. Again, I am not blaming them - most teams would have done the same.

These are not good conditions for cricket, especially when you have a zero percent chance of salvaging anything from the game.

It doesn't matter if India is immune to the pollution.

If Sri Lanka is struggling with the conditions, then end the match. This is a health hazard. They wouldn't be wearing masks if they were normal.

It's India vs Sri Lanka. Two teams. Not one.

They arent running around. And its their wish to not take precautions.

Its just a mask. Dont know why you guys are feeling offended if someone doesnt want to breathe the smog in.

They kept stopping play.Kept complaining to the umpires.Their manager and coach walked out.

Wear mask and get on with the game.

The umpires are standing continously for 2 days.

At least there is air. It is not like they are playing on Mars with no oxygen. I suggest they quit whining and get on with the game.

It's not just about breathing though. Anybody can breathe. They have been playing in those conditions for days.

This basically.

That is a totally clueless post. First assuming that everyone should be the same and should feel okay with the smog. So what if the umpires are okay with it? Some people can compromise , some can't. Then accusing SL players of exploiting the conditions basically alleging them to be unethical without any proof.

Mathews, who was fielding with a mask on, is now batting without one. I guess the air is less polluted now, and you do not have to 'protect' yourself if you are batting.

I guess he must have some special technology in the grill of his helmet that filters out the air.

Please explain why the 'ethical' Sri Lankan players are batting without surgical masks, when they were fighting for their lives in the field only half an hour ago.

Is the air less polluted now, or it does not affect the batsmen by some magic?

Secondly, it is not an assumption - a British is extremely likely to have less tolerance for polluted air than an Asian. Maybe, Llong is an exception, but the chances are very dim.

When you put two and two together, it is pretty obvious that the Sri Lankan players have exploited the situation to get off the field.

I don't think SL problem was due to pollution.

They were complaining because they didn't have enough players.

Lakmal, and Gamage ill. Thirimanne, Samarawickrama and Herath injured.

BCCI should have scheduled this match in Hyderabad or somewhere else. Smog problem was known weeks ahead.

Why be an idiot and make the players play in smog? Why give an excuse to the opposition?

Nope moaning started before either lakmal or damage went off

Not going to defend pollution in delhi because it is a sad reality but why didn't they wear a mask yesterday? Conditions were almost similar on the first day also. If they had raised this point before the first ball was bowled then I would have also supported them. But now it looks like a tactic which can be used in future also.

Lankans just opened a Pandoras box. They have no idea hiw much this will backfire.

Looks like a tactic to force india to declare their innings as soon as possible.

Nothing wrong with complaining about air pollution but it looks a smidgen silly when you walk out to bat without a mask ten minutes later.

The air quality in Delhi was really bad a couple of weeks ago but now it is not the way it has been made out to be by Sri Lanka .. Sri Lanka should just play at home .. Maybe that way they might win or at least draw a game ..

The air is not as bad as SL players are pretending it to be. Just "masking" their cricket failures here

So Lankans wearing masks is the measure of air quality?

Let's be honest there - the umpires didn't seem to much of a problem, including the Brit Nigel Llong who has never been exposed to such pollution, and should have a low level of tolerance.

The Sri Lankans are undoubtedly struggling because they have been battered in the field for a long time, but they have done a good job of selling it to the umpires.

Can't blame them though, most teams would have done the same in this situation.

Atleast the Indian govt. ,Is working towards curbing this problem and let's be honest here pollution is not just a problem in India it's the problem in general and can't be rectified in a day or two measures are being taken but it will take time.

Well I live in Delhi so I can tell you that the pollution levels here till few weeks ago we’re abysmal and unlivable now they are just pathetic.. If someone has issues like bronchitis or asthma Delhi is not the place for them.. Sri Lankan players are well within their rights to complaint and wear masks for someone not used to such levels of pollution it can have a bad impact on your health.. We Delhiites are used to it doesn’t effect us that much in short term maybe in long term we will see problems..
Bubby - Indian government is taking half hearted measures, the only way to prevent such levels of air pollution is to stop farmers burning crops (provide them with alternatives so as to they don’t burn crop) don’t see government working on that...
Second the amount of cars in Delhi is ridiculous, the construction of flyovers still take ages, South ex metro construction is going on for God knows how many years corrupt corporates everywhere.. Finish construction ASAP increase public transport and quality of public transport automatically number of cars will come down a bit.. Again government is half heartedly working on it..
Deforestation/construction/factories in the name of development is a catch 22.. Factory waste should be monitored and construction should be limited with proper green belt zones which builders in NCR don’t follow.. NGT does try and implement measures however corruption in government, DDA and NGT itself prevents from these measures to be 100% implemented..

Basically government and political parties don’t realise that they are risking the lives of their own kids as well they never cared about common man’s lives/kids lives but they Seem to be in denial of the catastrophic levels which will effect their own kids..

I don't know why some people are shamefully attacking the Sri Lankan's for wearing masks ?

It's well known the Indian capital has a huge pollution problem.

People that get used it don't need to wear them but those that come from a much cleaner environment will not be used to the poisonous air surrounding them or just want to take some precautions.

It's clearly hitting a nerve because it doesn't look good on TV for the home nation but it's better to address the problem rather than finger pointing foreigners taking proactive measures to combat it.

It’s not about Sri Lanka exploiting the situation or not, simple fact is BCCI should never have had scheduled the match in Delhi... I wouldn’t want anyone else to come here and face what we face on a daily basis it’s not good..

I don't know. If i have to guess, i would say the mask disturbs their batting but not their fielding. I would rather wait for them to clarify it later. Quite sure they would be asked about it.

Secondly, it is not an assumption - a British is extremely likely to have less tolerance for polluted air than an Asian. Maybe, Llong is an exception, but the chances are very dim.
UK is much more polluted (air) than Srilanka so i dont know what the heck you are talking about. Check out green house gases emission index to get an idea.

When you put two and two together, it is pretty obvious that the Sri Lankan players have exploited the situation to get off the field.

Baseless assumptions. Just because an angrez isnt wearing a mask, the asian doesnt have the right to wear it? Reeks of inferiority complex that an Englishman would always have better standards than an Asian. We arent talking about some beggars when we talk about Srilankan players. They are elite players of their nation and perhaps want to take care of themselves better than the said umpire.

If you don't know, then you don't have to apologize for the Sri Lankan players. The fact that they turned up for batting without their masks clearly suggests that they were overplaying the situation.

The excuse that it disrupts their batting is a silly one. They were acting as if they were choking in the field, but when it was their turn to bat, they didn't seem to have any issues at all.

It is very clear that the Sri Lankan players had enough bashing and were attempting to force a declaration. Besides, they have a documented history of trying underhand tactics to get out of sticky situations.

Remember the Sharjah chase in 2014? The Sri Lankans fielders were unable to sight the ball when we got close to the total, even though our batsmen had no issues in tonking their bowlers.

GHG emission is not the only measure of how difficult the air is to breathe. The U.S. emits more GHG than Pakistan and India combined, but the air is far more breathable. A lot of African countries barely emit GHG but the quality of air is really bad.

Secondly, it has nothing to do with inferiority complex. White people have been less exposed to air pollution compared to their South Asian counterparts because of superior quality controls. Hence, their levels of tolerance are low.

A westerner is likely to suffer more from bad air than a Pakistani, India, Sri Lankan or Bangladeshi. Same is the case with digesting infected food. They are more sensitive to negative environmental externalities than Asians.

A shame that the Sri Lankan players "want to take care of themselves better" only when they are fielding. It is fine to inhale toxic air when you are batting, because for elite players, not getting disturbed when you are batting is more important than protecting your lungs and respiratory system.

According to the India today, rohit sharma and Kuldeep Yadav we’re also wearing mask at one point. I can’t find any pictures of them though.

They are definitely trolling and it's brilliant. It has riled up all the Indians.

Something needed to be done to liven up this borefest of a series.

Quit your whining, SL deserve no sympathy, only shame! Not for the first time they;re doing this, Dilruwan himself used help from the dressing room in the first test!

Yeah only by ignorant indians who doesn't want to admit the faults here. Most non Indian posters here would decide who is the main faulty here and it's only India/BCCI.

Stop blaming others for your shortcomings. I don't see any reason to shame the lankans for wearing masks. Indians should be grateful they are still playing. Just because indians are ok with breathing in dirty polluted air, doesn't mean every visitor should do the same.

The only ignorant people on this board are SL suppoerters who couldn;t see the tactic from SL, even if it was thrown at them! What did Chandi & Matthews do at the end of the day when they were batting with a cap, let me see ~ no masks, I wonder why?

Air quality got better in 10 mins? Most of them were wearing masks before Kohli declared, yet none of the batters went in with a mask, even after they got their caps on!

I wasn't claiming that it got better in 10 minutes. There were just two explanations I could think, I listed both of them.

Since Indians were at 500/5, wearing mask made no difference for fielders, SL was already doomed. But batsmen do have something at stake and they don't want to be distracted by mask. That's why they are not wearing masks.

I know you weren't, I was just rubbishing anyone's thoughts that SL had genuine concerns at that time. They were in Delhi about 2 or 3 days back, so they have no concerns about the Smaug when they were practicing, when they played for 4 & something sessions & when they batted? Yeah so if it looks like a duck, quacks like a duck, you know :21:

Why does that not apply to fielders or catchers?

Delhi Test under threat due to smog

Whether the third and final Test between Sri Lanka and India in Delhi will continue remains to be seen after an assurance had been given by match referee David Boon to study the prevailing conditions in the Indian capital further before taking a decision.

Boon, the former Australian opener, was seen at the Sri Lankan dressing room after the second day's play and Cricbuzz learns that an assurance had been given to study whether the conditions were suitable for a high-intensity sporting event.

Four Sri Lankan players had vomited on the second day's play and several others needed a supply of oxygen after they complained of being short of breath while some were administered injections. Fast bowlers Lahiru Gamage, Suranga Lakmal, top order batsman Dhananjaya de Silva and reserve Jeffrey Vandersay were the worst affected.

The match referee has indicated that if both captains agree the match could be abandoned, or if doctors feel that it is unsafe to continue the game, the game could be called off. Otherwise, the officials will observe how the Indian players cope with things before taking a decision on whether the game could go on.

At least four Indian players were believed to have been wearing masks in the dressing room before the lunch break, including Kuldeep Yadav and Rohit Sharma. The Sri Lankans then sent their physiotherapist Nirmalan Dhanabalasingham to purchase masks and several players took the field wearing masks after lunch. Eventually by mid-afternoon, all players were wearing masks.

"The bowlers obviously were struggling. The match referee was in our change room when Suranga Lakmal started vomiting. Doctors were in there as well. We had oxygen cylinders and it was tough," Sri Lanka's coach Nic Pothas told journalists.

"It is an abnormal case. Match referee and umpires will file a report and we will leave it with the ICC," Pothas added.

The Sri Lankan players have been advised to eat lot of sweets and drink plenty of water to stay out of trouble. India were on the field for 44.3 overs on the second day and Murali Vijay, Ravichandran Ashwin and Ishant Sharma seemed to be struggling.

Delhi's pollution levels reached a significant high in recent times. Last year, two Ranji Trophy games, involving Gujarat-Bengal and Tripura-Hyderabad were abandoned due to pollution.

Last month, ahead of the Delhi Half Marathon cardiologists had warned that the event posed serious threats for athletes. During the Under-17 FIFA World Cup, tournament director Javier Ceppi went on record saying that sport events in Delhi can not be held from October to February.

I really didnt know and neither did you. The difference is that i waited for their clarification at the end of day's play and you blamed them for exaggerating and being unethical in trying to force a declaration. Read the news report to see how wrong you were. Even some Indian players were wearing masks.

The excuse that it disrupts their batting is a silly one. They were acting as if they were choking in the field, but when it was their turn to bat, they didn't seem to have any issues at all.

Again, read the report. Many srilankan players had vomited and match referees have taken note of it. These baseless accusations are never a good thing because you are raising a finger at the sportsman spirit of a player.

GHG emissions give you an idea that Srilanka is less polluted than UK. And you dont even need to go to such indexes. Every one knows that srilanka is one of those coutries which are closer to nature rather with less air pollution. They have no problems of smog there and hence players arent accustomed to it. Dont know what is so unbelievable about Sri lankans being uncomfortable with smog while an englisman not being so.

A shame that the Sri Lankan players "want to take care of themselves better" only when they are fielding. It is fine to inhale toxic air when you are batting, because for elite players, not getting disturbed when you are batting is more important than protecting your lungs and respiratory system.

It is upto the batsman, if he feels he cannot manage with a mask, you cannot really judge him for that. Only the players know which things disturb them and when. As the reports suggest, srilankan players did fall sick so there is no reason for them to fake anything. Read the report provided by Abdullah719

Suddenly the posters blaming the sri lankans have gone very quiet.

Some very disgusting and hypocritical comments in this thread. Delhi is a complete mess. The pollution is atrocious and professional sportsmen playing an international match have every right to complain. Just because they didnt wear the masks yesterday or in their innings is not an answer to this complete debacle.

Shame on the Indians who rather than being sorry are blaming Sri Lankans that they are faking it

If you ever know the history about Lankans you would not say this. The umpires did not wear. Batsman who was there for so many hours did not wear. When they came back to bat they did not wear.

The supposedly Victorious posters should answer only a simple question. Why wear a mask while fielding and not while batting? They had stopped the match while fielding . They could've easily said no to batting as well. Nobody is denying pollution.

They were doing the best they could to save themselves from pollution without letting their game get affected much. This is the only plausible explanation.

If you accuse an entire international team of XI players of lying about being uncomfortable, then that is just sad.

It is shocking to see the extent to which people will defend their nation in the name of blind nationalism.

I don't care what country this happens in. This situation in Dehli is a public health disaster.

Do people seriously think if Australia were touring, this match would have gone ahead? Why are SL lives worth less?

For those criticising the SL players for laughing, please stop rewriting history. They were laughing because their coaching staff were waiting by the boundary in whites ready to field as SL had run out of substitute fielders.

I understand it is an embarrassing situation for India but quite frankly it should be taken as a wake up call. Believe it or not, some things are more important that cricket.

If health is so important , why did they come to bat ? That too , without masks including Dhananjaya who vomitted.

Not sure what are you blabbering about here. I live here and I know Delhi's air is polluted. It takes just 5 mins to realise that when you enter in the city or come from another city.

Nobody is denying/defending that delhi is polluted with bad air but why didn't Sri Lankans wear masks on the first day and now while batting in their 1st inning? They are not the same Lankan team who used to win Spirit of the Cricket awards. They know how to waste time just watch the first test of this series again.

Why so much pollution? Dhaka is also polluted, but this is a different level. I was at Gurgaon few years back (& in late October), weather was atrocious, but air was better, at least not to this level.

What an apologist for Mother India. Just because Sri Lanka didn't wear masks on the first day, they have lost the right to wear it ever again? Sri Lanka should be lauded for trying to play without masks on the first day, but obviously neither Delhi, nor its jingoist fans deserve such favour, and they did the right thing by wearing it today. They did what the Indian players should be doing, but are too afraid to raise it.

Typical Indian "fans". Blame anyone who shows the reality and tarnishes the reputation of India, something they spend all their time defending. They would rather defend BCCI and their government instead of protesting about the hazardous pollution.

Why exactly were they not wearing masks while batting then, does pollution and smog only trouble bowlers and fielders, the report says de silva the opener was very affected by the conditions funny how the guy who vomited and had serious problems due to smog comes out to bat without mask that too as an opener.

Its one thing to say pollution is affecting you and another to make a big show out of it and show how all your team is suffering from it and have to wear masks to protect themselves only to come to bat without masks 10mins after making a huge hue and cry over pollution.

You are right. Smog affects you more if you do physically exerting activities like bowling and fielding.

If the Sri Lankans were being cunning and using the masks as a delay tactics, they would be wearing it all the time to make it believable.

Show some respect to our guests who did us a favour.

I am not accusing them on basis of yesterday and today but how do you go from we need to get off because all are suffering and we need masks to survive to we can play, vomiting is a non issue and no masks needed in 10 mins.
