[PICTURES/VIDEOS] 9 editions of PSL later - We still have no new stadium! Where has the investment and earnings gone?

I agree. stadiums are a white elephants and major cost sink.

Its is highly questionable is the business generated makes for the cost.

Baseball, maybe. NFL stadiums are a waste public money
Absolutely, the NFL and Baseball stadiums are pretty much all tax payer money funded. Totally ridiculous. The owners should pick up 100% of the tab. No reason for tax payer $$$.

A good blueprint is the US Open tennis venue. The National Tennis Center in NY. All paid for with private $$$. Excellent facility.

Building or upgrading PSL/PCB stadiums is a non starter currently. The economics do not work. PCB has to take a long hard look at how they do business and make big time changes to increase their revenues. Even if revenue amounts change, they have to save up $$$ over many years before it can be invested into stadiums.

PSL peaked in season 4. Since then, it's been a downgrade. Everything, the crowds, the tournaments, the oversees player quality, ticket prices(in 2020, ticket prices at Rawalpindi were 200rs, now it's 2000Rs), everything. Players like Russell, Pooran, Miller, Moeen etc have been preferring BPL over PSL. It's a damning indictment for the people in charge. How PSL has failed to flourish and its growth has been stunted.
But we get a new anthem every year, so everything's fine I guess.

I am also surprised guys like Russell, Miller, Moeen etc. are preferring BPL over PSL.

Moeen is of Pakistani origin. I thought he would pick PSL.

Is this because of security stuff? Can they not travel freely?

New stadiums lack soul and history. I'd much rather renovate Gaddafi and NSK then have a brand new flashy stadium with no personality and history. Take the example of the Modi stadium. A fantastic structure, but it has no appeal compared to the other iconic Indian cricket venues.
Weird!!! Why suddenly talk against him? Something wrong?

Bangladesh's GDP per capita being almost 2x Pakistan's might explain it.

No idea. But Moeen's wife is of Bangladeshi origin.

Wasim Akram speaking during a TV show, when he was asked about why the PCB doesn’t invest in building new stadiums like those in Queenstown or Dharamsala:

“We are struggling to maintain three stadiums. Where will we build a new one? Have you seen the roof of the Qaddafi Stadium when they show it from drone cameras? It’s not getting fixed by us. Where will a new one be built from? We can only dream about it. We also have available places. For instance, Abbottabad is a very beautiful place.’”

It doesn't have to be scenic, it has to be practical. These stadiums are from the 70s/80s. It is not unreasonable to expect a new stadium for the biggest sport in the country.

To play in these stadiums is a humiliating experience.

lol why will anyone choose a tournament participation based on what per capita income? By that token shouldn’t everyone flock to 100 and BBL over IPL? Players go to tournaments based on how much they earn. So there is a reason to wonder why top players went to BPL. They don’t pay all that well. I was under the impression PSL pays better than BPL.

Listening to Naqvi’s press conference he said work on stadiums is going to start right away. Pindi, Gaddafi and NSK. He promised we will see “state of the art stadiums” but it remains to be seen what the result is.

I have high hopes now.

Saw the press conference as well. Naqvi has an air of competence around him and it makes me somehow feel confident that he will pull this off. Hoping he does not disappoint.

Chairman PCB inspects National Bank Stadium

Karachi, 19 March 2024:

Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi inspected the National Bank Stadium, Karachi after the conclusion of the HBL PSL 9 final. The chairman observed various facilities at the venue across all the enclosures. COO PCB, Salman Naseer was also present on this occasion.

Chairman expressed his reservation on the lack of quality infrastructure at the venue and instructed swift upgradation of the stadium and pressed upon the importance of enhancing the fan’s view from enclosures.

According to the new upgradation plan, the chairman asked for the protective palisade in the stadium to be moved further towards the boundary to minimise the hindrance concerning the view of fans.

Chairman PCB also met the groundsmen of National Bank Stadium and lauded their hard work throughout the HBL PSL 9.

Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi: “As part of our plan to upgrade the three major venues in the country, I have tasked the team to finalise National Bank Stadium’s upgradation plan swiftly and start the work as soon as possible. The seating facility at the stadium must be comfortable and the PCB will surely take great care of the newly upgraded stadium in coming times.”

NESPAK presents stadium upgradation plan to Chairman PCB

Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi called on the NESPAK (National Engineering Services of Pakistan) officials in a follow-up meeting on the upgradation of the three major venues in Pakistan. COO PCB, Salman Naseer, Director Infrastructure PCB Nasir Hameed and GM NESPAK were also in attendance during this meeting.

The initial designs for the immediate upgradation of Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore, National Bank Stadium, Karachi and Pindi Stadium, Rawalpindi were presented to the Chairman PCB in the form of a presentation.

Chairman instructed the officials about his plans regarding the enhancement of the view for the fans from every seat in the stadium while he also emphasised the importance of renovation of the hospitality boxes at all three venues.

With the upgradation plan to be finalised soon, the Chairman instructed the NESPAK officials to start the work on stadiums immediately keeping in mind a tight window of time before hosting the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

Caught some highlights. The pitches they use need a bit of variety. It seems like they haven't done anything for decades. Then I saw some.blanket like thing next to pitch. Won't that trip someone off? Lack.of professionalism.

Ahmed Shehzad who recently played in the BPL asked these players why did they prefer BPL over PSL even though the PSL paid more.

They made the following points

- We dont want to be dependent on security or stuck in our hotel 24/7. We want to be able to bring our families over as well

- The players have also complained about food quality where they have suffered from stomach issues and bugs. They were also unhappy with the standards and quality of the hotels.

The PCB and the Pakistani govt should definately address these issues but there is an urgent need to inject big finances in the league.

A Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) delegation featuring COO Salman Naseer and Chief Selector Wahab Riaz visited Faisalabad’s Iqbal Stadium

The delegation made a visit to the Iqbal Stadium as per the instruction of the newly-appointed PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi.

The delegation was instructed by the PCB head to analyze the condition of the stadium and the facilities there which may pave the way for its upgradation.

For the unversed, Faisalabad’s Iqbal Stadium has not hosted a single international, domestic or franchise league match since the return of international cricket to Pakistan.

The Stadium last hosted an international match in 2008.

Faisalabad as a city is not ready to host any form of cricket.

PCB and the government need to prioritise Karachi, Islamabad and Lahore. Upgrade or build new stadiums along with creating new city centres and hotels. This is the only way.

There is no point doing a paint job on crusty old stadiums in shanty towns.

Faislabad has always provided the best crowds for cricket games. They fully deserve to host international cricket. We need to diversify our cricketing activities and spread it out all over Pakistan

Karachi stadium looks like a prison facility.

Pakistan has horrendous stadiums, demolish them and build brand new ones. Looking at a failed country like Pakistan, one can dream a bit.

Have you been to Faisalabad? They can certainly host a match if needed. Lots of new development, the stadium was one of the best to watch cricket in, but needs major upgrades.

PCB is trying to upgrade the existing stadiums but the real problem is the crowd, especially in Karachi. How are they going to facilitate the crowd is the main point here. Building and renovating the stadium is necessary but you gotta make it easy for the people as well to come to the stadium and do something about this issue.

There are so many stadiums in India that they cannot even be counted, while we only have a handful of stadiums, just 3-4.

India has tv rights deals worth $billions. Pakistan TV rights deals can barely touch $50 million. There is no comparison. Upgrading a Stadium is atleast a $5-10 million project

This is a very beautiful stadium.. And its in Mullanpur which is literally was a village outside Mohali, Punjab back in 2006-07.
My engineering college was very near to this place. Rapid Infra development is happening in India thanks to Modi and his ministers.

This is not an upgrade though. This is a brand new stadium. They announced in 2010. Started in 2017. It cost them 29 million

Don't really blame PCB. Pakistan economy is in dire straits. Country is getting poorer & poorer with each passing year. Building cricket stadium is big waste of money. Pakistan should focus more on issues like poverty / hunger / inflation

There is zero economic benefit from building a fancy stadium when your economy is tanking

PCB's job is not to take care of poverty, hunger, inflation, that is the domain of the Pakistani government in charge. Responsibility of the cricketing infrastructure of the country does fall under the PCB ambit though. They should do their job to the best possible extent. Having 5 chairman's in the last 1.5 years is only going to lead to instability.

To answer this, we have to analyze the financials of the PCB.

Are they public?

How much is their revenue and net profit?

How much are the expenses, and what categories make up the highest expenses?

I’m guessing they waste a lot on unnecessary employees plus other wastage.

We definitely need someone COMPETENT to come in, take charge of entirely changing the cricket infrastructure and think from a spectator’s perspective. Cut down unnecessary expenses and divert them to rebuilding stadiums, related infrastructure.

Who can be that guy?

Reading that Mohsin is a competent guy (leave politics aside, all we need are competent people in the country, unfortunately focus on corruption no corruption has ruined our competence).

Let’s see.

Most stadiums are built by joint effort of sports body & local govt. Don't think any local govt in Pakistan can afford to splurge money on a big fancy stadium unless the economy improves

Another issue is Pakistan fans don't seem to turn up. The PSL games were played in front of empty stands. That wud be financial disaster for the PCB if they spend heavily on a new stadium

In India if you build a new stadium, you can easily recoup investment bcoz fans turn up in large numbers for IPL games. Also these stadiums often often host events like weddings, music concerts, food festivals, book fairs, expo during off season

The PSL Games in Pindi, Lahore, Multan were sold out.

Khi was a problem and the common feedback received for the poor attendance were cumbersome traffic, logistics arrangement and the pathetic stadium infrastructure which ruined the viewing experience.

The PCB for now under Mohsin Naqvi has hired Nespak to upgrade, modernize the Lahore, Karachi, Pindi Stadium for the purpose of the 2025 Champions Trophy. He has also tasked the PCB officials to inspect the state of the other stadiums in Pakistan i.e. Faisalabad, Gujranwalla.

The KPK Government has taken around 4-5 years on the Arbab Niaz Stadium and it looks 85% ready for cricketing activities.

PCB has 900 plus employees on their payroll and the cricket players are separate. Definitely need to make the PCB more efficient. Zaka Ashraf apparently went on a ruthless hiring spree in his 7 month tenure which is consistent with PPP's track record with state owned enterprises where there are 5-6 people for one position.

From my brief research into stadium development. Renovation can only take you so far. I think these stadiums are so old now, we will never have them to a standard we expect. Also they have outgrown their surroundings, traffic and security are a big issue.

They should pool their money towards atleast 1 new stadium located where fans can go through security and get in easily.

Lahore would be the best place to start, crowds are guarenteed.

Islamabad would be ideal but will fans attend?

Well this would be Rafi stadium currently under construction. There are also plans for a new stadium in Islamabad within Blue City I think.. both are privately funded. The government isn’t going to do anything, only private enterprises will be able to build new stadiums but I’m not sure how the revenue sharing will work if the pcb has the stadium.

Lets be honest, cricket can never come back to Peshawar in our lifetimes.

I am fairly confident we will see a PSL match there. International cricket.. not so certain but maybe a Pak vs Afg match is possible in the near future.

Despite bringing in NESPAK who seemed to have produced a 3D design overnight it’s hard to imagine they can upgrade 4 stadiums in less than a year and have them ready for the champions trophy. What they’re proposing for Karachi is a multi year project, and we haven’t even seen the plans for the stadiums. They still have to complete the engineering, procure the materials, bring in workers, etc. it’s a shame the previous regime and even the one under Raja didn’t have plans in place to do any of this work. They couldn’t even install chairs.

I don't think Pakistan will see any new stadiums built before the champions trophy 2025. No chance for this to happen as the history suggests. Maybe the just renovate the stadiums that have shown promise with the crowd attendance.

Watching IPL has shown the importance of home/away games and the home ground advantage. Getting the PSL teams to play home/away has to be high priority. This will take PSL to the next level.

Cannot underestimate the atmosphere of playing in front of home crowd. Just look at the IPL home team crowds. The X factor to motivate the home team.

First step for the PSL towards the home/away is to get the stadiums up to par. Once the stadiums are done, get the home/away going. These two moves will go far in terms of PSL getting jolt it needs to get the revenues to a higher level.

It's not just about building new stadiums... the problem is that PCB is not willing to bring A-grade players of the teams which is reducing the interest of the people and if ppl will loose their interest so no one will bother to invest on cricket here.

Naila Bhatti is the PSL Commissioner and Shoaib Sheikh is the PSL Director.

These individuals need to be grilled about the haphazard last minute manner in which PSL 9 was held.

Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB), Mohsin Naqvi, presided over an important meeting at the PCB Headquarters, Gaddafi Stadium, to comprehensively review the plan for stadium upgrades. Chairman Mohsin Naqvi emphasized the urgent need to hire an international consultant to oversee the upgrades at Gaddafi Stadium, National Bank Stadium Karachi, and Rawalpindi Stadium. Stressing the importance of expediting the process, Naqvi instructed to proceed without any delays, considering the significant delay already incurred in the upgrade works.

To ensure swift action, Chairman Mohsin Naqvi directed the formation of a 3-member committee, consisting of the Directors of Infrastructure, Domestic Cricket, and International Cricket, tasked with expediting the hiring process in accordance with regulations. This committee, in consultation with the international consultant, will strive to deliver world-class facilities at the three stadiums.

The upgrade plan encompasses structural modifications to the boxes, enhanced facilities, and the installation of numbered seats for spectators. Moreover, there are plans to augment the seating capacity in the enclosures on both sides of the main gate of the Gaddafi Stadium.

Chairman Mohsin Naqvi also underscored the importance of replacing screens for scoreboards and live streaming, and instructed to prepare a feasibility study for the installation of new floodlights in the stadiums.

The meeting was attended by Chief Operating Officer Salman Naseer, Chief Financial Officer, Director of Domestic Cricket, Director of Infrastructure, and Director of International Cricket, demonstrating the collective commitment to advancing the standards of Pakistani cricket infrastructure.

I think PCB should not jump the gun yet on spending money. They should wait and see how the CT turns out. If it happens without India, then the money they are likely counting on from the ICC is going to be a lot less.

My suspicion is that the PCB want that ICC money to go towards the upgrades.

Naqvi in the press conference mentioned he wants to model the stadium upgradation on the international football stadiums and provide that kind of fan viewing engagement experience

What kind of football stadium are we talking?

For reference Santiago Bernabeu in Madrid has gone under a renovation that costed them ~$2 Billion Euros

And the irony is that we can't even use all the existing ones for the CT 2025. Only 3 locations in observation so far. Pathetic

Mohsin came too late. Wasim khans and rajas and najams and zakas did nothing to develop our facilities.

Nobody did anything for the development of stadiums in Pakistan. PCB has always been a poorly run show. Just 3 venues for champions trophy is nothing but a thing to be ashamed of. Host country has no stadiums to host an event.

DHA Phase 5 has a lot of space and direct connectivity with the Highway but i doubt army will give up on their land.

Yes, there is a vast area near Rawat, and they can also develop inside DHA and Bahria Town

Yes, there is a vast area near Rawat, and they can also develop inside DHA and Bahria Town
Bahria Town suffers from congestion issues because of GT-Road.

DHA Phase 5 and Phase 2 (does not have space) have separate lanes on the highway near their gates, they are extremely secure from a security point of view. Serena to DHA 5 will take barely 30 mins. It could be an excellent choice.

Also, Bahria Town will soon have a Pearl Continental as well, this can reduce the commute even further if required.

It’s hard for Pakistan to recoup the cost of building a state of the art stadium. There is hardly a corporate culture in Pak where you can take clients, customers etc. and entertain them in private boxes. A private venture would likely see it as a losing proposition. I’m not even sure why a stadium is being built in Bharia Karachi, seems like the pcb would pay a lease to use it?

I doubt their will ever a new stadium in Pakistan, they're probably just going to redo older stadium and provide newish "refurbishments"

Looking at indias 3rd 4th grade stadiums are better than Pakistans top stadiums.
Its pity they are not investing in the facilities.

Better facilities brings out new investments and spectators are more engaged.

PcB should count themselves lucky people are crazy enough turning up to these stadiums.

Even the so called peshawar latest stadium is something from 1930s design

Pakistan is a bankrupt country running on handouts what can we expect the pcb to do. Its a miracle we have a semi functioning board.

How has the US built stadiums in months and Rafi stadium still isn't finished yet and Gaddafi stadium still has a rusty roof? :ROFLMAO:

When does the work on the upgrades start? All I have seen are mockups. I think it will just be some new chairs and a lick of paint.

In 9 seasons of PSL we've just added one team from the 5 teams in PSL1 ,sums up the planning of PCB also there is no new stadium or infact an old stadium being renovated on a massive scale highlights the incompetency of PCB.

Early 90s PCB had alot of venues for international season but the lack of upkeep and finances made them abandoned

Shiekhupura , Gujranwala, Hyderabad, Peshawar & Sialkot has hosted international cricket why can't PCB work on those stadiums

These cities don't have decent hotels, poor infrastructure so food poisoning is probable. Have you seen these shanty towns? You can't host international cricket in these places.

Islamabad should have had a stadium years ago.

US only cares about stadiums, they build stadiums faster than Public Transportation lines, which are needed.

Even a high school stadium in Dallas looks better than many Intl stadiums in India.

The U.S. knows how to build infrastructure, plus they have unlimited amounts of $. However, the stadium in NY is modular and temporary, it’s not meant to be a permanent fixture so there are no real amenities. It’s just a field with modular seating.

Peshawar stadium is nearing the completion of its renovation. It took way too long but it will look decent. They can host international matches. None of the other cities you mentioned have the hotels or the infrastructure. Faisalabad once hosted a lot of cricket including tests, it would be nice to see them get matches again. At the very least the stadiums in the other cities should be available for domestic cricket but the PCB has let them fallen into a state of disrepair.

The upgrade of Gaddafi Stadium for the Champions Trophy Tournament is underway. Despite it being a holiday, Chairman of the Pakistan Cricket Board, Mohsin Naqvi, visited the stadium to review the progress of the work. During his visit, Chairman Naqvi inspected the demolition of offices, assessing the ongoing renovations.

Chairman PCB visits Gaddafi Stadium to review upgradation work

Preparations for the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 are in full swing with the ongoing upgradation of Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. Despite public holiday due to Eid ul Adha, Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi visited Gaddafi Stadium to review the progress of the work.

Mohsin Naqvi inspected the ongoing work and assigned the workers to complete the demolition work by June 30.

He also directed the officials to increase the number of machinery and labourers on the site after the Eid holidays.

Mohsin Naqvi also emphasised the need to speed up the work and utilise additional resources to ensure the timely completion of the project.

He stated that the upgradation of Gaddafi Stadium, along with National Bank Stadium in Karachi and Rawalpindi Stadium, will be completed well before the ICC event, due to take place in Pakistan next year.

During the visit, officials from the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) briefed Chairman PCB while PCB's GM Infrastructure was also present on the occasion.

what money?

PCB gets 10 per cent of PSL revenue pool. That's it. It probably goes into organising the tournament.

PCBs only surplus from PSL is the franchisee fees.

I don't know who pays the security bills, but if PCB is paying that too then there isn't a lot of surplus with the PCB.

The ICC funding perhaps goes into the recurring day to day activities of the PCB.

So at the end of the day PCB may not have enough funds to upgrade stadiums.

The West Indies has some of the most beautiful and picturesque stadiums outside SENA. Surely, Pakistan can’t be poorer than the West Indies!

Boy he loves a photo op!

Cant blame him, Ramiz Raja had a massive ceremony to celebrate the team that lost the final!

So what I understand is they’re putting in 20-25 hospitality boxes in place of the old pavilion that’s been demolished. No addition of any second tier for seating elsewhere in the stadium because there’s not enough time. Also sounds like Pindi will likely get some modular seating additions similar to what we saw in NY. As for Karachi I have no idea what’s goona happen. There was a 3D render shared a while ago but no way that gets done before the CT starts.

According to the latest PCB BOG meeting on June 6, 2024 the PCB will invest a total of Rs 12.8 billion which works out to approximately $46 million to upgrade the Qadhafi Stadium, Rawalpindi Stadium and National Stadium in Karachi.

That works out almost $15 million per stadium, surely with this budget the PCB can renovate, upgrade and make the stadiums world class and provide the spectators with a world class experience.

However, the PCB only has 6-7 months to complete everything. Is this possible?

The upgrades prior to the CT are constructing new pavilions at the three stadiums, hospitality boxes, new scoreboards, and addition of seating where there isn’t anything else. I’m not sure if the Rs. 12.8 billion is just for that or if there will be further changes after the CT.

PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi visited BDP Pattern's London headquarters, where he met with key officials, including Chairman Chris Harding, to finalize designs for three stadiums: Gaddafi Stadium (Lahore), National Bank Stadium (Karachi), and Rawalpindi Cricket Stadium. Naqvi praised the designs and emphasized the importance of completing construction within the scheduled timeframe.

How has the US built stadiums in months and Rafi stadium still isn't finished yet and Gaddafi stadium still has a rusty roof? :ROFLMAO:

When does the work on the upgrades start? All I have seen are mockups. I think it will just be some new chairs and a lick of paint.
Any update on Rafi Stadium? Heard about this Stadium like a decade ago.

They are investing so much money, time, energy on making the stadiums aesthetically pleasing but are they enhancing the crowd seating capacity and facilities as well? If not then this is a waste, how much international cricket will Pakistan host at home and how much crowd turns up? Will the PCB earn a return on their investment from these ambitious projects?
