What's new

[PICTURES/VIDEOS] 9 editions of PSL later - We still have no new stadium! Where has the investment and earnings gone?

They are investing so much money, time, energy on making the stadiums aesthetically pleasing but are they enhancing the crowd seating capacity and facilities as well? If not then this is a waste, how much international cricket will Pakistan host at home and how much crowd turns up? Will the PCB earn a return on their investment from these ambitious projects?

Stadiums and their surroundings should be at 1st world standards, it's important for optics. The government should now invest in areas around the stadiums and turn them into fan parks, shops, hotels. Things to do for tourists and touring teams.

From what I understand yes, seating capacity and viewing experience will be enhanced. I don’t believe the pcb is looking at this purely from an ROI perspective. None of our stadiums are of international standard and this is intended to get us there. Gate receipts don’t drive revenue for Pakistan, but having a nice stadium will pull crowds and also make it hospitable for visiting teams, media etc. providing top notch facilities for touring teams and personnel is a requirement.

Capital set to get modern cricket stadium

The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) is making another attempt to build an international-standard, state-of-the-art cricket stadium in the federal capital.

The Federal Minister for Interior, who is also the Chairman of the PCB, has directed the Federal Development Authority (CDA) to present a feasible plan for this project as soon as possible. The PCB Chairman has suggested that the stadium should be constructed through a collaboration between the PCB and the CDA.

The proposed plan is not part of the preparations for hosting the Champions Trophy next year. Instead, the PCB aims to build the stadium as part of its long-term planning. Pakistan is the only major cricketing nation whose capital does not have a stadium for hosting international cricket.

According to sources in the Federal Development Authority, the Interior Minister, Mohsin Naqvi, has discussed the preliminary plan for the cricket stadium with the CDA Chairman. The CDA will finalise the land identification and other details soon and present the final plan to the Interior Minister.

The PCB has made several attempts in the past to build an international cricket stadium in Islamabad. The idea of a state-of-the-art stadium in the capital has been considered multiple times, and several meetings have been held under the federal government and the PCB. However, the project has yet to move beyond the planning stage.

The first proposal for a cricket stadium in Islamabad was made in 2011 by then CDA Chairman Task Force Faisal Sakhi Butt. Initially, land for the stadium was identified in Shakarparian, but the project was later halted, and the land is now under the Pakistan Army's jurisdiction. Subsequent efforts to build the stadium were made by former PCB Chairmen Najam Sethi and Zaka Ashraf. In 2022, former Prime Minister Imran Khan tasked PCB Chairman Ramiz Raja with building the stadium in preparation for hosting the 2025 Champions Trophy. CDA was also given the responsibility to allocate land, but no significant progress was made at the time either.

The recent proposal for the stadium is seen as more feasible because it involves leadership from the same individual, as the CDA operates under the Ministry of Interior, and Naqvi heads both the PCB and the Ministry of Interior.

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi during media interaction at Lahore:

"Our main target is to complete these stadiums before the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, InshaAllah, if Allah wills, they will be completed."

"There was a huge difference between our stadiums and those in other countries, I'm sorry to say that none of our cricket stadiums qualified as international-level stadiums. There were no seats, no bathrooms, and the view was such that you could watch the match from 500 meters away."

"All our stadiums are being fully upgraded, and we're not just stopping at that - we're building a new stadium in Islamabad, and also in Abbottabad, Skardu, and focusing on performance centers."

"There are a few stadiums that we don't own, so we've written letters to the provincial governments to either fix them themselves or hand them over to us, and we'll fix them. So that domestic and international cricket can be held there."

Let’s be honest, BCCI has a lot to do with it. Ever since they took over world cricket, Pakistan stopped building world class cricket stadiums.

I remember in 2003, Pakistan had world class stadiums in all cities and they built Multan stadium which was SOA by then standards.

This is why IPL is bad for world cricket:

12 billion being spent to provide better facilities (which were already decent) for a few hundred VIPs who don't even pay the ticket price. Meanwhile, general enclosures viewing experience and facilities improvement not even in the plan. This is extremely insulting to the loyal cricket fans in the country.

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi in a media interaction at the Gaddafi Stadium:

“The basement of Gaddafi Stadium will be constructed by September 30. Each floor will be completed in a three-week period. The front building would consist of a steel structure. The main building of Gaddafi Stadium will be completed by December 31.”

"The construction of the hotel near Gaddafi Stadium will start after the Champions Trophy. An international hotel chain will be brought in, which will generate revenue for the board."

“Pindi Stadium will have to be completely demolished and rebuilt, the seats will be installed in the stadium before the Champions Trophy."

“The renovation at Karachi’s [National Stadium] will also be completed before the Champions Trophy.”

"A new stadium will be built in Islamabad on the model of the Dubai Stadium."

All the general enclosures are being updated. Gadaffi stadium will have completely new enclosures, seating, washrooms etc.

Its a very good decision by the PCB to revamp all the enclosures. Now, the only concern with the gaddafi stadium is they are building the stands on steel structure. Wouldn't the steel be burning hot during the sun hours?

Steel structure is much stronger than concrete plus all modern stadiums use this method. The seats won’t be steel so temperature isn’t an issue.

These stadiums are not getting ready anytime soon. The smartest decision would be to start these projects 3 years ago when they were awarded the tournament. It’s too little too late.

Chairman PCB Mohsin Naqvi recently visited the Gaddafi Stadium to oversee its upgradation project, emphasizing the need for timely completion ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy. During his detailed visit, Naqvi inspected the basement and floors, observing the construction works of the enclosures and ensuring the quality of construction works.

He expressed satisfaction with the project's progress and instructed the concerned authorities to complete the project by the deadline at all costs. Naqvi stressed that the entire team must work day and night to meet this goal ¹. The Project Director of FWO provided a briefing on the ongoing works and progress, with PCB Director Domestic Cricket, infrastructure authorities, and officials from FWO and NESPOC in attendance.

Key Highlights of the Visit:

- Basement Completion: The basement work has been finished.
- Floor Construction: Work on the floors has commenced.
- Quality Assurance: Naqvi emphasized ensuring quality construction in all aspects.
- Timely Completion: The project must be completed before the ICC Champions Trophy.
- Collaboration: Various stakeholders, including FWO and NESPOC, are working together to meet the deadline.

Here's my puzzlement-why aren't you seeking private donations from the wealthiest Pakistanis for these stadiums?
In the states most college athletic facilities are either funded by debt or donations, with the biggest organizations largely funding everything with donations (think Ohio State, Alabama type of schools).
Pakistani cricket as a competitive endeavour is on par with those organizations. Go ask the rich people for sponsorships for money or similar. Ask for $3-4 million dollar donations from big Pakistani businesses and give them stadium sponsorships in return with their names on various parts of the stadium.

Rafi cricket stadium. It was projected to be competed in 2024. Looks like it will take 2-3 years more

The project was announced in 2013 and in 11 years this is all they have achieved? Clearly Malik Riaz has no interest in the project

Can't believe people kept bigging this up.
