[PICTURES/VIDEOS] Haris Rauf at Melbourne Stars - Performance Watch

Melbourne Stars sign Haris Rauf as a last-minute injury replacement

The Melbourne Stars have been forced into an 11th hour squad change, plucking a Pakistani speedster out of Tasmanian Premier Cricket to replace South African superstar Dale Steyn.

Haris Rauf, a 24-year-old from Rawalpindi who lists Steyn as his idol, was last weekend bowling for the Glenorchy Magpies in Tasmania's Premier League first grade T20 competition, where he knocked over Hobart Hurricanes opener D'Arcy Short.

In his third match of the summer, Haris took 4-12 in four overs for Glenorchy against Short's Clarence side, opening the bowling alongside Hurricanes bowler David Moody.

Steyn's KFC BBL debut as the Melbourne Stars' prized recruit had been highly anticipated but the 36-year-old arrived in the city this week with a side strain picked up playing for the Cape Town Blitz in the Mzansi T20 Super League.

When it became clear Steyn wouldn't come up in time for the Stars' trip to the Gold Coast for their opening match against the Brisbane Heat following a long flight from South Africa, the Stars were forced to scramble.

Enter Haris, the unheralded 24-year-old who's played just 10 career T20 games, stealing a moment in the spotlight in February when he nabbed 4-23 for the Lahore Qalanders in the Pakistan Super League while sending down 150km/h thunderbolts.

Self-taught playing gully cricket on the streets of Rawalpindi while sneaking out from his strict parents, he was eventually persuaded to turn up at an open talent hunt trial for the Lahore Qalanders after showing promise at university.

The right-armer isn't particularly tall and doesn't jump high in his delivery stride but windmills his left arm in front of his body before delivering the ball, and was able to generate speeds of up to 150km/h in the nets. Former Pakistan seamer Aaqib Javad saw enough to take him under his wing.

Aaqib arranged for him to spend time at Michael Clarke's Western Suburbs Cricket Club in Sydney, where he played second grade in 2017-18, before returning to the Qalanders who played him in a T20 tournament in the UAE.

He returned to Western Suburbs last summer, this time graduating to first grade, before being given his shot in the Qalanders' PSL side.

It's a rags to riches tale in the making, with Haris one of two in the Qalanders' player development program turning out for Glenorchy this summer.

He will now face the high-powered Heat batting line-up featuring Chris Lynn, Max Bryant and Tom Banton on Queensland's glitter strip.

While they have high hopes for Haris in his Big Bash debut, the Stars are hopeful his services will not be needed for long with Steyn eying a return to the side for Sunday's match in the Victorian regional centre of Moe.

"Our priority is Dale's fitness and continuing his treatment. He is very keen to play but we'll let him rest after a long flight to Australia and put him in the best position to be ready for our match in Moe on Sunday," Melbourne Stars physiotherapist Tommy Simsek said.

The Brisbane Heat, meanwhile, will take an unchanged 13-man squad into their second fixture after their opening night defeat by the Sydney Thunder at the Gabba.

This is the second year of the Heat's deal to take home games to the Gold Coast, but the venue has not proved a happy hunting ground in the past.

Brisbane lost both of their games narrowly at Metricon Stadium last season, to the Sydney Sixers and Hobart Hurricanes, while the Stars triumphed over the Thunder at the same venue.

The Stars will also host a 'home' game on the Gold Coast on December 27 against the Adelaide Strikers, while the Heat will play a second Gold Coast match on New Year's Day against the Perth Scorchers.

Brisbane Heat squad: Chris Lynn (c), Tom Banton, Max Bryant, Ben Cutting, Cameron Gannon, Sam Heazlett, Josh Lalor, Ben Laughlin, James Peirson, Matthew Renshaw, Mark Steketee, Mitch Swepson, Zahir Khan.

Melbourne Stars squad: Glenn Maxwell (c), Hilton Cartwright, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Ben Dunk, Pete Handscomb, Clint Hinchliffe, Sandeep Lamichhane, Nick Larkin, Nic Maddinson, Haris Rauf, Marcus Stoinis, Daniel Worrall, Adam Zampa.

Fortunate series of events. Let's hope he makes the most of it. Will probably only get 1 or 2 games with Steyn looking to return from next week.

Wow what a signing, Haris is tailormade for White ball cricket. Australian batsmen get ready and order some protective pair of shoes, brace yourself 145 kph yorkers coming yourway :D

It seems to be a one match gig as of now, unless Harish Rauf does something extraordinary for the Stars.

That's still one more match than what he is getting under cancerous Misbah and Waqar.

I think he will be really expensive and won't play much. But lets see. If he does well first up, he may stay on with steyn benched.

I cant believe this guy hasnt played for Pakistan!
Haris rauf is the closest thing i have seen to waqar younis.
This guy has to play in the world t20 next year or i am gonna lose it!😠

He is not meek enough (acha bacha) to get in Misbah's good books.

Making his debut today in BBL

Teams:
Melbourne Stars (Playing XI): Marcus Stoinis, Ben Dunk(w), Nic Maddinson, Hilton Cartwright, Glenn Maxwell(c), Peter Handscomb, Clint Hinchliffe, Adam Zampa, Daniel Worrall, Haris Rauf, Sandeep Lamichhane

Bad news for PAK cricket - truly their cricketers are becoming hired guns almost like on daily payment basis for these T20 leagues. Shaheen also heard that going to UK for that Royal thing.....

PCB should make a list of players to be blocked from joining such tournaments

Haris will be bowling against Lynn,Bonton and Briyant. All 3 are dangerous striker of the ball and have highest strike rate as Well. Very very tough debut for Haris in BBL :)

Haris was already in Australia playing grade cricket, he'll likely return to club cricket after this game

Haris Rauf to Bryant, out Caught by Handscomb!! Bryant c Handscomb b Haris Rauf 6(8) [4s-1]

Damn I’m reallf happy for Rauf wicket off the first ball but than again I want Tom Blanton to score big runs as well just hits rauf for a six oh well atleast he’s playing infront of big crowds good experience for him

Relax it was a terrible delivery going down the leg side luckiest start possible

<div style="width: 100%; height: 0px; position: relative; padding-bottom: 56.250%;"><iframe src="https://streamable.com/s/t25f8/mcasob" frameborder="0" width="100%" height="100%" allowfullscreen style="width: 100%; height: 100%; position: absolute;"></iframe></div>

Rauf wicket.

To be honest he doesn’t look ready for international cricket

Wicket was lucky

Bowlers are always ready for international cricket, it is batsmen who are not ready. Actually Pakistani batsmen came to early in international cricket which is wrong.
Haris bowled a good 1st over given the situation of the match.

149 km/h
ball no 10.4 :D
Funny story shared on live commentry, his teamates refused to face Haris in nets yesterday :D

And Misbah picked Musa Khan and Muhammad Irfan ahead of this guy. Absolute clown.

17.4 ball 148 km/h :D
Some serious pace Batsmen literally dancing, having no clue and another excellent 3rd over :D

Serious talent this guy. He should also concentrate more on the longer format.

148.3, 145.2, 146.0, 140.6, 146.7, ?

And not spraying it around either.

Shame this is probably the only game he’s going to get.

and bowled him ,Commentators laughing :D thats too much quick for Brisbane Heat :D

Wow magnificent debut literally set up the win for them by taking the first wicket and they didn’t pick him for t20s and took musa what a shame. Only reason he wasn’t picked was cause he didn’t come through the system misbah and waqar can’t face the fact that guys on the streets could be better than the ones playing in domestic

He is the best white ball prospect, ready for international cricket. Not sure about test cricket

Nah mate didn’t you see how happy he’s made his skipper maxi he’ll get more games now we’ll if not this season he will come in next season for sure

Maxwell in post match presentation, we will be keeping Haris for the rest of season, he has scared the guys in dressing room :D
GAME OVER

OK, so logged on today just to write about this guy Haris Rauf.

He bowled absolute rockets. Nailed yorkers with perfection, has good bouncer. Clocked 149kph and bowled a number of delivers over 140kph.

With WC T20 coming up in Australia, I'm glad that he is permitted to play in Australia. Big Bash is a wonderful platform to hone the skill of shorter format.

Haris Rauf is a must for me for the WC T20. He can be a gun option for Pakistan.

He was playing for Northen ahead of Musa Khan in the National T20 Comp. Misbah and Waqar are just clueless.

Watched his bowling today,he bowled very well.
Super speed.
For me he looks better than Musa and Naseem

Maxwell totally loved him. I am very very happy for Haris Rauf.

The best thing about him is that he genuinely wants to play for Pakistan it’s his passion all our other cricketers don’t have that passion as they come from under privileged house holds and just play for the money like Amir but he’s quite financially stable as well so it’s not like he will go away and start playing these leagues. It’s his only option at the moment cause our clueless management can’t see a t20 star right infront of their eyes

Excellent T20 bowler. Bowls with pace and a lot of control. Playing with Australian players and in their setup is doing wonders. We need to rid ourselves of garbage stuff from Naseem and Hasnain, Hasnain especially. Naseem has the ability to get better with right guidance (which is certainly not Waqar Younis). But at this point in time, it would be a travesty if Haris doesn't feature for Pakistan in the T20 world cup.

He left for Abu Dhabi in the middle of the QEA trophy without getting an NOC from PCB. It seems he's more loyal to Lahore Qalandars than Pakistan.

Nevertheless, heartening to see him bowling well and I hope he gets picked in the next T20 squad

i believe he is under contract by LQ... hence obliging to it...

Haris Rauf's second wicket - Mitchell Swepson'

Musa is the only one who can be classed as ‘garbage’ right now out of the trio of speedsters.

Shaheen, Hasnain, Naseem and Rauf need to all be persisted with and developed because the prospects are mouthwatering.

Pleased for him, looked good on a big debut stage overseas. Hopefully he continues and gets his call up...believe there is an international bowler beyond just T20s there.

Already in LOIs, for me, ahead of Musa/Hasnain - has a greater repertoire.

Usman shinwari have hit close to 150kph few time in last BBL and was also exceptional the tournament later on he was destroy in SA t20 series

Having said that haris rauf is decent talent and should be definitely pick ahead of wahab ,irfan

Those are great words from the skipper. Will boost Haris's confidence.
Best of luck to him.

I watched most of his spell live. He should be involved in the T20 team and possibly the ODI team. No where near ready for Test cricket.

Rauf could be a good LO player for him. Not sure if he has the body for test match cricket.

Performing in the big bash will help his chances of playing in the World T20.

I'd get him involved in the T20 squad. Could be a real threat in Australia for the T20 World Cup.

Thread about Rauf - stick to topic please.

I saw him bowl once and he's the real deal. Has good zip. Hopefully goes on to play for Pakistan

Pakistan can do with him instead of Hassan Ali

While I am admirer of the skills Haris has but even he can have a bad couple of seasons in international cricket. Hasan Ali was extremely poor in ODIs in last couple of years but still did pretty decently in T20s and tests. Players struggle on and off in their careers, blame should be on previous management who didnt rotate him when he was struggling with form.

Told you guys, Haris is not flying back to Tasmania for Grade Cricket :D 13 players squad against Hurricanes announced for tomorrow game :)

Totally agree Hasan ali have bowled 4500+ balls in international cricket with more than decent record while haris rauf is yet to bowl single delivery in international cricket .

I am excited about haris rauf and looking forward to see his development but hyping him to moon is not right there is long way to go to compare him with international players

No Steyn again, didn't think the injury would last that long. Good opportunity for Haris again though. If he has another good game I think he'll be retained and played over Lamichhane depending on the conditions. They already have Zampa to cover the leg spin
