[PICTURES/VIDEOS] Is Shubman Gill the best young cricketer in the world today?

Amid reports of Shubman Gill unfollowing Rohit Sharma on the social media platform Instagram, the young Indian batter has shared a few pictures with the Indian captain before leaving for India. Gill, along with Avesh Khan, will head back home as India fly to the Caribbean for the Super 8 stage of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2024.

36 balls 50 for Gill today against Zimbabwe in 3rd T20. Good inning for the cap. He needed that inning desperately.

People are being a bit too hard on Gill. His form took a dip after dengue, but he's a quality opener.

Is he the next rohit, Kohli or Sachin in the making? Heck no, but he can become a good player if given a long haul.

India however needs to decide if Gill is the right choice to move ahead or Jaiswal + Abishekih

Shubman Gill hits back-to-back half-centuries, scoring the latest in just 35 balls in the fourth T20I against Zimbabwe

He has probably ruined Yashasvi Jaiswal's chance for a century

Gill's done enough to keep his place for the Sri Lanka tour - both T20s and ODIs. Still unclear if he's the final answer for that opening slot though. Think I would prefer him at 3.

Gill should be a no 3. India should try to make him a successor to virat kohli as that's the type of player he can be, aka accumulative batter but with a 5th gear to up the tempo.

Abi and Jaiswal should open and be the future openers for india as rohit sharma is the guy you want them to succeed.

Shubman Gill has no idea about captaincy, looks clueless: Amit Mishra

Veteran spinner Amit Mishra has raised concerns over Shubman Gill's appointment as Indian captain for the recent T20I series against Zimbabwe. Mishra suggested that Ruturaj Gaikwad would have been a better choice, questioning Gill's leadership skills.

Veteran India spinner Amit Mishra has voiced concerns regarding Shubman Gill's elevation to the Indian captaincy for the recently concluded T20I series against Zimbabwe. Mishra called Gill a clueless captain despite the young opener leading India to a 4-1 T20I series win against Zimbabwe. Gill took over Gujarat Titans' captaincy after Hardik Pandya returned to his old franchise, Mumbai Indians ahead of the IPL 2024. Gill's tenure as captain of the Titans was less than stellar, with the team winning only 5 out of 14 games and failing to reach the playoffs for the first time, finishing 8th in the points table.

The veteran spinner spoke candidly on Shubhankar Mishra's podcast on YouTube and questioned the decision to hand the captaincy to Gill, suggesting that Ruturaj Gaikwad would have been a better choice. "Mai Shubman ko captain nahi banaunga, kyonki maine usey IPL me dekha, he doesn't know ki captaincy kaise karna hai, uske paas captaincy ka idea hi nahi hai. (I would not have made him the captain. You saw the IPL this season, Gill doesn't know how to captain the side, he is clueless)," Mishra remarked.

"Just because he is a part of the Indian team, he shouldn't be made the captain. Gill has done well in the IPL over the last few seasons, he did fine in the Indian team as well. The Indian team made him the captain as they want to give him the leadership experience, which wasn't visible when he led Gujarat Titans in IPL," Mishra added.

Gill managed to win a series such a laughing stock of a bowling attack. That too convincingly all matches. His tactical captaincy was on point and he grew as a leader throughout the series.

The IPL was a learning curve for him as well. I found him to be pretty level headed and that's a great quality in a leader. Also he led from the front with a couple of nice 50s too.

Can't ask more from a captain than this.

His batting skill and overall approach is not suited for T20. He should stick to ODI & Tests.

Yeah tough to judge captaincy as separate from team management but he was okay.

He's at least 2 to 3 years away in any case. There's a couple of senior players ahead of him and Rohit's still around in ODIs. In the meanwhile, the selectors can keep observing him in the IPL and odd low profile series.

The other young guys are behind him in the race though - Samson, Iyer and Pant are all captains of their IPL teams but not sure of their place in the India squad. Rahul and Hardik are a good 5 years older. Jaiswal hasn't really captained yet at any level as far as I know.

Mishra uncle is judging everyone through his short stint in IPL, based on his likes and dislikes.

I am with Mishra.

The series did not present much of a challenge in terms of trying out his tactical calls on field but having seen IPL there's much to learn for Gill.

The worse part is that he's a timid captain and his post series remarks reflect the low ceiling he's happy to live under. He'd be a disaster as a long term captain or at the very best would hobble India from truly unleashing their potential.

I am more forgiving on tactical competence part because these days you have the TM constantly in your ears and it's a skill one can acquire. But the character as a leader is set in stone and affects the core of the team.

Shubman Gill impressed the former BCCI chief selector Saba Karim with his captaincy in the T20I series against Zimbabwe, he said:

"Shubman Gill as a captain and a batter. I was expecting a little more consistency in Shubman Gill's batting. That was a little lacking. However, he performed fantastically as a captain. Pressure mounts on any captain after losing the first match, and that too a young captain,"

Jaiswal is better than gill in all formats tbh. More clutch. Better mentality as well.

Imho Most overrated young Indian player, that will be promoted more than Jaiswal due to looks and PR.
Any captain that does not endorse fast bowling culture should be dropped from captaincy right away

He is not a T20 player he looks like a babar mould of player. He should concentrate on odis and tests.
They want to turn him into Virat Kohli kind of superstar but he can't be him. He just doesn't have aura of Virat. He looks meek

Gill is not having a good time out there as a batter. With the amount of hype he has, his performance is below par. India should be looking beyond him as a captain now. He is not the guy India would like to invest on as a captain.

Jaiswal is yet to undergo tough test tours. Let's wait before comparing him with Gill.

I love Jaiswal and his positive cricket - something that Gill can work on but he hasn't looked convincing when it's swinging or bouncing yet. Let him do well in Aus.

????

In 2024, he is averaging 50 in test cricket and 38.6 in T20Is with a Strike Rate of 131.

He has turned a corner as a test batter this year with some clutch performances when India needed him to.

I listed his T20I numbers above. They are not at all shoddy.

And he led a totally raw Indian team in Zimbabwe with distinction. He was given a ridiculous selection of bowlers and still managed to win the series convincingly.

I won't read too much into IPL as there are several factors beyond his pay grade at play there.

Ajit Agarkar spoke about Gill's leadership role during a press conference alongside India's Head Coach, Gautam Gambhir:

"Shubman Gill is the guy we feel is a 3-format player. Has shown a lot more qualities over the last year or so, that’s what we hear from the dressing room. He has shown some decent leadership qualities. We want to try and give him the experience, though there are no guarantees."

Gill is no more the best young player in the world.
Harry brook and Jaiswal are better test players than him.
Ravindra seems to be highly talented as well

Neither brook nor Jaiswal has scored runs in territories foreign to them.

Jaiswal has no Sena scores. Brook skipped the Indian tour.

Brook knows that 4 years from now he is unlikely to face Ashwin and Jadeja.

No way brook can be a good player in sc.he was abysmal against chahal,Kuldeep and everyone in ipl, odi wc .He was trying to hit everything against Kuldeep in t20 semis .He doesn't have a defensive game against spin.

Subman Gill said in a press conference before the T20I series against Sri Lanka:

"My performance in T20Is before the World Cup this year wasn't how I had expected it to be. Hopefully, going forward, in the upcoming cycle - I think we play 30-40 T20Is [before the next T20 World Cup] - I can improve my performance when it comes to batting, and also [we can improve] as a team.”

"We really enjoy batting with each other. Especially the kind of shots we play, we kind of complement each other. Being a right-left combination, we have had good partnerships in whatever T20Is we have played before; two partnerships have been 150-plus [too]. So we have a great understanding and communication between us, and I have fun batting with him.”

Gill vs Jaiswal is brewing up nicely. Fully expect this to get utterly toxic in a couple of years far outpacing and outvenom-ing anything between Rohit and Kohli among their respective fans.

Cricket wise, I am partial to Yash being the more prolific bat.

Despite a second string team, India are treating this series as an experimental playground. You run the craziest experiments when the stakes are the lowest, and Gambhir is doing exactly that.

Shubman Gill has not been successful against SL while chasing

Shubman Gill against Sri Lanka in ODIs
Bat 1st: 4 inns, 297 runs, 74.25 avg, 108 SR, 2 fifties, 1 century
Bat 2nd: 3 inns, 64 runs, 32.0 avg, 97 SR

How would you rate Shubman Gill's all-format performance in international cricket so far on a scale of 1 to 10?

An experiment by definition can fail 90% of times or when it passes it unearths hidden gems/talents.
Steve Smith was basically a bowler but was sent as a batter experimentally.Sehwag was sent as an experiment to be an opener. Many others were tried as openers to get that X factor. Sehwag clicked but 9 others failed.
Gambhir sent Sunil Naraine as an opener in KKR and ended up wining IPL as a result of Naraines performance

Shubman Gill's honest take on Test performances: Not been up to my expectations

Shubman Gill has made an honest admission about his own performances in Tests and said they haven't been up to his own expectations. Considered to one of India's next all-format stars, Gill had made his debut in the longest format of the game late in 2020 during the away series against Australia. In 25 matches, the 24-year-old has scored 1492 runs at an average of 35.52 and has scored 4 hundreds and 6 fifties during the time.

The Indian star had started his career as an opener but has now taken up the role of No.3, following in the footsteps of Rahul Dravid and Cheteshwar Pujara. While there were a few difficult moments for Gill during the England series earlier in the year at home, he was able to turn a corner and scored 2 hundreds and finished as the second highest run-getter in the series with 452 to his name from 5 matches.

Speaking ahead of the Duleep trophy first round, as quoted by PTI, Gill said he is hoping that the upcoming run of 10 Tests against Bangladesh, New Zealand and then Australia away would help him improve his performances.

"Yes, I've not been up to my own expectations ([n Test cricket]," he said on the eve of the Duleep Trophy opener in Bengaluru. "But we have ten Tests coming up together. Hopefully, after these ten Tests end, I'd be up to my expectations or more," he added.

Gill said that he had worked on his defence against spinners and claimed it was his main focus during the England series.

"I worked on my defence a little bit more especially against the spinners. Playing on turning tracks, you should be able to defend a lot more. Then you play scoring shots. With more T20 and playing on batting friendly tracks in the white ball, I feel it takes away a little from your defensive game over a period of time. So that was my focus during the England series," he admits.

Gill would be leading Team A in the Duleep trophy round one.

  • U-19 World Cup winner (2018)
  • fastest to score 2000 ODI runs (38 innings)
  • most runs in the year 2023 (2154)
  • second-highest career batting average in ODIs (58.20)
  • youngest Indian to score a double hundred in ODIs (23 years and 132 days)
Happy Birthday to Shubman Gill.

"Will be an interesting and intriguing contest" - Gill on Bangladesh Test series

Shubman Gill said India won’t be taking Bangladesh lightly in the forthcoming two-match Test series, starting on September 19 in Chennai. Bangladesh have never beaten India in a Test match but are coming into this series on the back of a historic 2-0 whitewash over Pakistan.

"I don't think you can underestimate any international side. The kind of cricket Bangladesh has played in the last couple of months, especially in Pakistan, has been impressive,” Gill told JioCinema.

“Their fast bowlers and the way their middle-order batters have absorbed pressure shouldn't be disregarded. So, I believe it will be an interesting and intriguing contest.”

The right-handed batter featured in the first round of the Duleep Trophy 2024, scoring 25 and 21 across two innings. Gill opened the batting for India A but will slot in at No.3 against Bangladesh.

The 25-year-old started his Test career as an opener but has now shifted to No.3. In 17 innings at No.3, the batter has managed 618 runs at an average of 41.2, which is more than his average as an opener (32.37).

“Quite often, when you're playing in a different position, everyone knows your potential, but you still have to prove yourself,” said Gill.

"In the initial matches when I played as number three, I couldn't perform well - against West Indies and South Africa. I was getting good starts, scoring 20s and 30s, but I wasn't able to convert them.

"When I returned, I knew I had to turn these performances around. Moving forward, my goal is to convert my fifties into big hundreds.”

In the last Test series against England, Gill slammed 452 runs at an average of 56.5, studded with two centuries and as many fifties.

"That was a big confidence boost for me, especially after losing the first Test match. Quite a few players were unavailable, so there was pressure on us to win the series.

"I had never played five Test matches before, so it was a good experience and exciting to feel that intensity. Even after getting breaks following two Test matches, we never dropped that intensity.”

Shubman Gill Won't Be Part Of India's T20I Series vs Bangladesh. Here's Why

India vice-captain Shubman Gill are among prominent players who will be rested for the three-match T20I series against Bangladesh starting October 7 as part of BCCI's workload management policy. Gill, India's No.3 in Test matches, is a vital cog in the team's top-order alongside Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Yashasvi Jaiswal and is expected to play all 10 Tests this season. Apart from Gill, a few more important players will also be rested keeping the the three- Test series against New Zealand in mind.

India will start their upcoming international season with a two-Test series against Bangladesh in Chennai from September 19 followed by the second match in Kanpur starting September 27.

"Yes, Shubman will be rested for the Bangladesh T20I series. If you look at the fixture, the three T20Is will be played on October 7 (Gwalior), 10 (Delhi) and 13 (Hyderabad). Now first Test vs New Zealand starts October 16.

"So with a turnaround of three days, it is important to give Gill a break," a BCCI source told PTI on the condition of anonymity.

Gill has so far played 21 T20Is and has a hundred, three fifties to his credit besides a strike rate of nearly 140. He was recently appointed captain for the five-match series against Zimbabwe in Harare, which India won 4-1.

In the current season, T20Is are least priority for the Indian team with the World Test Championship points with the five-match series against Australia being topmost on the agenda.

Also ODIs will be important as there is a Champions Trophy to be played in that format in February-March. It is understood that most of the Test team players are unlikely to be played against Bangladesh in T20Is.

While the troika of Rohit, Virat and Ravindra Jadeja have retired from the shortest format, pacers Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Siraj also will be given rest as per workload management requirements.

It will be interesting to see if Rishabh Pant plays T20Is, as his workload is paramount for selectors and he is needed in longer formats.

In case Pant is rested, there could be a possibility that Ishan Kishan is once again reconsidered after having spent the nine months of this year in the international wilderness.

Did you miss his entire series against ENG where he was the 2nd best scorer from either side?

PR in full force for this punk, not even the best ton of the game.
He's a very gifted player. But doesnt have the mentality to dominate bowlers and score big runs . Or at least I've not seen it so far.

I get Babar Azam vibes from him. And that's not a good thing.

I have more hopes from Yashaswi.

"Can't Apply A Cricket Reason": Sanjay Manjrekar Comments On Shubman Gill's Strange 'Weakness'

Shubman Gill poses a very odd statistic. From 2020 onwards, Gill's average is the highest among any Indian Test batter when you take scores from only the second innings. However, his career Test average is merely 35, meaning that he tends to underperform in the first innings. It proved to be the same again in the first Test between India and Bangladesh, as Gill recovered from a duck in the first innings to a fine 119 in the second. Former India cricketer Sanjay Manjrekar expressed his bewilderment at this repeated occurrence.

"I have no idea. I just cannot apply a cricketing reason to this," Manjrekar said on ESPNCricinfo, on why Gill is not able to perform well in the first innings.

"His Test career went off the rails slightly. He started very well against Australia in Australia - got a 90. After that, he had a few opportunities against not-so-great oppositions in India and didn't quite cash in, didn't get the big scores, and then had the tough tours. South Africa is never easy and then came to India and failed in that Hyderabad Test," Manjrekar said.

At the end of day three, Bangladesh were 158/4, with skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto (51*) and Shakib Al Hasan (5*) unbeaten. Bangladesh started the post-Tea session at 56/0 with Shadman Islam (21) and Zakir Hasan (32) unbeaten on the crease.

Jasprit Bumrah struck early for India in the session, removing Zakir for 33 (47 balls). The rest three wickets were picked by Ravichandran Ashwin as he dismissed Shadman Islam (35), Mominul Haque (13), and Mushfiqur Rahim (13).

The second session of Day three of the Chennai Test resumed with India at 205/3 with Rishabh Pant (82*) and Shubman Gill (86*) unbeaten on the crease. India now have a lead of 432 runs.

Pant went on to score a century on his comeback innings in the longest format of the game. On the other hand, Gill played an unbeaten knock of 119 runs from 176 balls, which was laced with 10 boundaries and four maximums.

Middle-order batter KL Rahul also played a valuable knock of unbeaten 22 runs in 19 balls, which included four boundaries.

India declared their innings when the team score was 287 runs for the loss of four wickets. They set a target of 515 runs for the visitors in order to win the first match of the series.

AUS vs IND, 1st Test: Shubman Gill to miss Perth Test due to injury

Shubman Gill is set to miss the opening Test against Australia, scheduled to begin on November 22 in Perth, after suffering a fracture to his left thumb. The injury occurred on the second day of India’s simulated training match, when Gill attempted a low catch in the slips, only to see his hopes of participating in the Test series dashed.

According to ESPNcricinfo, Gill had suffered a fracture on Saturday, though the BCCI has yet to issue an official statement. While the fracture is deemed minor, Gill is racing against time in a desperate bid to recover for the second Test, which is a day-night affair starting on December 6 in Adelaide.

With Gill sidelined, India faces a major reshuffling of their batting order. Adding to the uncertainty, the availability of captain Rohit Sharma is also in doubt. Rohit and his wife, Ritika Sajdeh, welcomed their second child on Friday, further complicating the selection picture. Should both Gill and Rohit miss out, India will be forced to find a new opening partner for Yashasvi Jaiswal, introduce a new No. 3, and fill the crucial No. 6 slot in the lineup.

Rahul Dravid during conversation with a sports media outlet:

"Well, they've got Shubman Gill, who is a terrific player. He's had some great success in Australia the last time. Everyone talks about Rishabh's 80 [89] and rightly so, but I think Shubman got 91 to set the game up on that fifth morning. So no, he's a fine, fine player, he's a great kid, and he's learning. Bats differently, slightly, to me and Pujara, but still a very, very good player."

Cheteshwar Pujara while speaking to a local sports media outlet:

"Shubman has already played Tests in Australia. He has experience of handling those conditions. He should back his style and play according to it. But he needs to be clear about which shots to play and which ones to avoid because you can't play many of the shots in Australia that you play in India."

"He needs to assess his strengths and identify the shots he must avoid. But he is a very talented player with a wide range of shots in his repertoire. Still, in Australia, you often have to avoid many shots. He needs to identify and avoid those."

Need Gill to get back in form very soon and go on a healthy 3-4 years bull run. It’s because of the way he plays. One of those batters who would always ensure Bharat’s top hand when they’re scoring runs.

I find him overrated tbh. Not a bad player but I don't see anything special in him.

His purple patch faded away after his 1st year debut run. Hasn't been the same ever since dengue happened.

I have no arguement against that.
But one of those days when he smashes a century, you know that he would put Bharat in a very comfort position.

Don't get me wrong, he's a good player. However I remember his debut, he was hyped up as a the guy who would replace kohli, Rohit and would essentially usher in his own era.

People were talking how after sachin's era it would be the kohli era and then the Gill era.

If someone told me jaiswal will usher it, I wouldn't mind.

But for Gill? Naw. A good player magar he ain't a future atg. He'll be an Indian great probably but not an atg.

Everything gets hyped in our part of the world. It’s the habit. There are people like Unmukt Chand whose hype even preceded their international debut and they never made it.

In Gill’s case I’d still say that he’s not a gone case. There is still hope that he can turn it around.

This is a batter who is capable of hitting ODI double hundreds and has already hit one. He can do the same in test cricket. His highest FC score is 268. He’s a batter with pedigree. Needs to grow in conference.

Shubman Gill vs Mitchell Starc in Tests:

162 - Runs
177 - Balls Faced
1 - Out
162 - Avg
91.52 - SR

Note: This is the first time Starc has dismissed Gill in Tests.

Has been a massive disappointment in the Test format.
He has some technical issues. But he also has issues with making the starts count. Two issues. He looked like million bucks in both innings at the Adelaide oval. I can accept the unplayable yorker. But the other dismissal was needless dismissal. Getting out to good ball is part and parcel. But when he looks in control he loses his wicket out of the blue. Unless he fixes it someone will take over.

I'm starting to doubt his temperament in Tests.

Eveb after a good start, he will get out any point of time if the bowling is quality and persistent one.Always opposition can probe him and he keeps on digging new holes for himself .

Gill has been a disappointment for quite some time now. His rise was great but this decline is even worse. Whenever he looks comfortable out there, he throws his wicket away.

I'm starting to doubt his temperament in Tests.
Much like Kohli he goes after the ball with hard hands. Kohli at his peak managed to adjust well according to length. Also bat is far infront of his pad unlike Jaiswal who meets the ball right under his eye. Gill is unable to do that. When you hit your peak you produce big innings. Even Sarfraz has a 150 with all the technical holes. Gill is yet to make a 150. One thing i can appreciate is he tries to play proper test cricket. He tries to leave the ball when he can. But at times he doesn't pick the right ball to leave. Quiet a few times he got bowled while trying to leave the ball meaning he has no clue where his off stump is.
