Fewest innings to eight ODI 100s for India
51 S Gill
57 S Dhawan
68 V Kohli
98 G Gambhir
111 S Tendulkar

He has disappointed me big time in Test cricket so far, the format I truly adore the most. Can't complaint about him in ODI cricket though. Still early days for him keeping in mind his age.

He looked at ease in the pink ball test in both innings. Then he threw his wicket away.

A Test batting average of 35 after 59 innings is pathetic by any standards.
He struggles to switch between formats. Plays far away from the body just like he does in ODIs. He himself highlighted that in the interview about how to curb certain instincts. He is aware of his weakness there. But he still has to work on his defensive technique against spin. Right now he commits too much on the frontfoot

No excuses from my side either.

He needs a few test series vs mediocre teams on flat pitches to smash some double hundreds and get that average in mid 40s.

Let’s be honest, everyone did that back in the day.

Sangakkara was bullying Bangladesh and Zimbabwe for years before he finally managed some runs abroad against tough teams.

Shows how easy ODIs/T20s are these days, if Gill and Rahul are superheroes in these formats.

Very easy format for batters actually.

Just for fun all this.
We have double centurions in this format who are not getting picked lol

Why can't the ICC roll back this rule, along with the no-ball/free-hit stuff?

Make ODIs great again.
The ship has sailed long ago. They used the ODI format to test and try things, and in the process have ruined it. The disaster started with preparing flat pitches for ODI cricket all around the world removing any home advantage, and the list goes on.

Srilanka is sort of an exception. Batting second is near impossible as we and Australia found out.

Speaking to Sanjana Ganesan on The ICC Review podcast, Ponting heaped praise on the 25-year-old, he said:

“He thoroughly deserves to be the number one ranked batsman in the world at the moment and it's a great sign for India that he's got his account underway early in the first game of a Champions Trophy,

“He's been a very, very good international player for a number of years,”

“He hasn't sort of transferred that over into Test Match cricket yet, but his white ball cricket over the last three or four years has been outstanding. Look, he's a big game player as well. He's played really well in IPLs over the last couple of years, obviously being captain of his franchise there.”

“I just think that the white ball game really suits his style of play,”

“One day cricket, he can come out and be nice and aggressive early on in the power play with the field up, get some boundaries away early by playing good, naturally aggressive cricketing shots.

“He's not a big hitter, he's not anyone that goes out there and tries to do anything outside of the way that he can naturally play. He just scores, he scores boundaries almost at will against fast bowling, against the white ball.”

“He just seems like a really nice character. A really softly spoken guy, very driven for what he wants to achieve in the game,”

“We've had a chance to catch up over the last couple of years, particularly around the IPL season. I just like his demeanor. He seems like just a very driven guy that wants to be the best that he possibly can with batting and also as far as leadership's concerned.”

Gill has been in good form in ODIs. his other format performance is poor

He has broken the myth that he can't play Shaheen Shah Afridi

Shubman Gill Will Shoulder Responsibility Of India In Years To Come: Sanjay Bangar

Former India batting coach Sanjay Bangar believes vice-captain Shubman Gill has shown enough signs to ‘shoulder the responsibility’ of the Indian men’s team in years to come.

Bangar’s comments came after Gill’s 52-ball 46 against Pakistan in Dubai on Sunday. Though he missed his half-century and was only the third-highest scorer in India’s innings, Gill showed immense maturity in hitting a flurry of boundaries against Pakistan’s ace, Shaheen Shah Afridi, immediately after he had gotten the wicket of skipper Rohit Sharma.

Gill’s knock also shielded Virat Kohli from the swinging ball in the powerplay and the former India captain capitalised on that with an unbeaten century. India won the match by six wickets.

“Clearly, he’s the guy who is going to shoulder the responsibility of the Indian team going forward in years to come," Bangar said on JioHotstar, as quoted by PTI.

“(His) foundations are really, really strong and add to that the confidence of nearly two-and-a-half years of performing in one-day cricket. In one-day cricket, he’s been phenomenal. Now look, the straight drive, the on-drive are the shots wherein you cannot actually hit the ball really hard. But here, he was hitting the ball so hard that despite the mid-off and the mid-on fielder being on that 30-yard circle, the ball was going and hitting them. That’s the kind of timing he possesses," he added.

Former India opener Navjot Singh Siddhu was also all praise for the 25-year-old, saying that he had done well to grow despite being in the shadow of greats like Rohit and Kohli

“Look, see, nothing grows under a banyan tree and the banyan tree of Indian cricket is basically Rohit Sharma and with him, Virat Kohli. But when you look at Shubman Gill, those two straight drives, even the blistering cover drive, this is like a blitzkrieg where the opposition is taken aback, you know, it’s awe-inspiring," Sidhu said.

“This man has emerged from the shadows of that banyan tree and has come of age. It’s tough to say that. You rate ability in men by what they finish, not by what they attempt. When you actually take your side through after scoring a hundred and don’t throw your wicket, that responsibility is making you better. It is developing you; it’s not ruining you. So, every responsibility that he’s shouldered has made him better. And to me, the best thing is, he’s technically so sound that he makes it look so easy," Sidhu added.

Hashim Amla, during an interaction with a local Indian media outlet:

"For India, you have got Shubham Gill; Rishabh Pant has been around for a while. For South Africa, we have Ryan Rickelton who has done really well off late."

"Every country has about 2-3 cricketers who are going to come through and I think that's pretty normal, that you see that every five years some youngster poke in the head through international cricket, and possibly be the next best, big thing."

"Gill is a brilliant player, the way he started in one-day cricket, he has been exceptional. He has been a huge part of India’s success at top of the order."

In ODIs, Gill is ahead of both for now.
India has managed to have three openers for three formats. Abhishek, Gill, Jaiswal. Ofcourse Jaiswal is an all formatter. But I don't mind him.playing mostly tests as that is the hardest to find spot.

I think it works.
Let Abhishek smash it in T20s and play a totally different brand of cricket. In 1-2 years if he shows promise for 50 overs cricket they can plan a transition for him. Right now i like how the T20 team has the license to play ultra aggressively.

Shubhman must be groomed for test matches so i prefer sticking with him in ODIs and tests.

Jaiswal is absolutely ready for all formats. Skys the limit for that kid.

I am somehow feeling that he is playing a bit selfish and too cautious these days, going for that KL-esque opener style.

choker. He has to overcome this. He looks a completely different player in a final. He does well even in semi final. But come the final he just freezes. I don't think you can compare with Babar. Babar has limitations. This guy has no limitations. Pure nerves.

Shubman Gill is the winner of the ICC Men’s Player of the Month for February 2025.

Well deserved one,

That knock in the final almost cost us the tournament. Disgraceful.

People wanted to drop RoKo for this loser. Riding the wave with RoKo doesn’t make you a champion. They are champions. You aren’t yet. You’re just a a bus rider not a bus driver. There’s a difference. You didn’t earn the country any tournament yet.

Cut him some slack bro. He is young and will learn.

He took the crown from Babar before Babar took the crown from Kohli. He is the player Babar fans think Babar is or will be.

Gill is the next great batsman in world cricket. He will dominate all formats for years to come.
LOL! Dream on. Gill is not worthy of tying Babar's shoe laces.

61*(43), 2(3), 60(38), 7(5), 90(55), 84(50) & 76(38) - GILL IN LAST 7 INNINGS IN IPL 2025

Captain is making a statement for T20I World Cup 2026.

Shubman Gill has been named the captain of India Test team as BCCI announced the squad for the England tour.

Congrats to him.

Good luck Gill.

Clearly a decision taken for long term vision. They want to build a team around a young batsman and he emerged as the most suitable candidate.

Shubman Gill reacts to being appointed India's Test captain

Shubman Gill outlined his approach after stepping into the role of India’s 37th Test captain.

Speaking in his first interview since being appointed captain of the Indian Test side, India’s star batter, Shubman Gill shared his thoughts with BCCI.tv, reflecting on the responsibility, the legacy he inherits and the road ahead.

Gill was announced as the next Test captain of India while the BCCI announced their 18-men unit for the upcoming five-match Test series against England, that will also mark the beginning of the next World Test Championship cycle.

"It is definitely a bit overwhelming," Gill said. "As a young kid when anyone starts playing cricket, they want to play for India and not just play for India, play Test cricket for a very long time.

“To be able to get this opportunity is a great honour and it's a big responsibility. I'm looking forward to this exciting opportunity and the upcoming series against England is going to be an exciting one.”

As captain, Gill emphasised the importance of leadership beyond just runs and results, expressing a philosophy rooted in discipline and connection.

“I believe in leading by example, not just by performance, but I think off the field by discipline and hard work. As a captain, a leader should be able to know when to step in and also when to give space to the players.

“A good leader should always be able to know what makes his players be able to have the best performance or the best outcome.

“That is always exciting to people to have those conversations with the players, to be able to know them on a deeper level than just cricket, you know, because then you're really able to know what can get the best out of them.”

India and Australia players laud emerging star Shubman Gill at the ICC World Test Championship Final 2023

Gill further spoke about maintaining mental clarity as a batter while captaining.

The 25-year-old has lit up the Indian Premier League this season both as a batter and captain. Gujarat Titans currently sit atop the standings, while Gill is placed second in the highest run-getters list, only topped by teammate Sai Sudharsan, who has also earned his maiden call-up to the Test side.

“One of the things that I learned was if I'm a batsman, I'm batting out there, I want to be able to make decisions as a batsman and not as a captain.

“If I start thinking about other things, it just puts more pressure on me, which is not required, you know, because when you're batting out there, you want to be able to take those risks.

“You want to be able to make decisions that you would make when you are playing just as the batsman, because that gives you the freedom.”

Gill credited India’s recent Test captains Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma for shaping his understanding of captaincy and preparing the team for success, especially in overseas conditions.

Both the veteran stars announced their retirement from the longest format of the game on May 7 and May 12 respectively, leaving behind an unmatched legacy in white-ball cricket.

“When I was a kid, I was always inspired by the greats and the legends of Indian cricket and been very fortunate to be able to play with so many of them.

“Be it Virat bhai or Rohit bhai, both were very contrasting in terms of the style, but it was very inspiring to see both of them working towards a common goal. You want to be able to win as a captain, and your styles can be different, but they both were very different, but also similar in their own sense.

Watch as ex-India head coach Ravi Shastri analyses the retirements of former India captains Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli as well as who could be the next Test captain ahead of India's tour of England.

“Virat bhai was always very aggressive, always wanting to lead from the front with hunger and passion.

“Rohit Bhai was someone who was very calm and technically, always very present, and he's very communicative to the players, what he wants from the players. And so these are the qualities that I learned from them.

“Guys like Virat bhai, Rohit bhai and Ashwin bhai, they have given us a blueprint on how to tour away from home and win matches and series.

“It's one thing to be able to deliver and execute, but because we have that blueprint, we know how to tour away from home and win matches and series.

Looking ahead to the five-Test series in England, Gill is eager to take on the challenge head-on. Gill has happy recent memories against England where he was the second-highest run-getter in the five-match series at home, with 452 runs coming across nine innings.

"My favourite series that I played was also a five-Test match series when England came to India. There's a different essence when you are playing a five-Test series. It's long, it's mentally and physically very challenging.

“That's the most exciting thing that I find about red-ball cricket. It's not going to be easy, but I think we're ready for any challenge."

“Not going to be easy” – Shastri’s advice for new India skipper

As Shubman Gill takes India forward as the new Test captain, former India coach Ravi Shastri shares his wisdom ahead of the five-match England series.

Shubman Gill is set to lead India in red-ball cricket for the very first time in the high-profile five-Test tour of England, and former head coach Ravi Shastri has shared thoughtful words of advice for the young batter.

Speaking on the latest episode of The ICC Review, Shastri emphasised patience and composure as key for the young leader stepping into one of the most challenging roles.

“I think, take your time,” Shastri said, offering his initial guidance to the 25-year-old Gill.

“It’s not going to be easy. He's been asked to do a tough job, that is to captain India on a tour of England.”

Former India Head Coach Ravi Shastri speaks on his preferred combination for the India side in Headingley as they gear up for a tough England series in Shubman Gill's first assignment as skipper.

It is still early days in Gill’s Test career, with 1893 runs at a 35.05 average in 32 matches, since making his debut in December 2020.

With English conditions known for testing even the most seasoned of cricketers, Gill’s leadership debut will be one to look out for, especially in the absence of veterans Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, who announced their retirement last month. The side have also not won a Test series in England since 2007.

However, Shastri believes the tour could prove to be a significant developmental phase in the youngster’s career.

“It's never easy, but I think he will learn from this exposure.

“What I saw of him in the IPL with the Gujarat Titans, he seemed very composed and calm. He's got a good temperament.”

Gill’s rise through the ranks has been marked by elegant batting and a level-headed approach on and off the field, proven by his exploits in the white-ball format as well for India.

Shastri was impressed with what he saw of Shubman Gill as captain of the Gujarat Titans in the Indian Premier League 2025, saying he displayed maturity and tactical awareness, traits that impressed till his side’s eventual exit in the Eliminators.

“He's matured as an individual, he's got some young players around with him, and I think it's a learning curve as far as Shubman Gill goes.”

India take on England in the first of the five contests at Headingley, from Friday, June 20. The Test will also mark the two teams first series of the next ICC World Test Championship 2025-27 cycle.

Time to man up and show his true potential to the world. He has being picked as captain due to future potential.

Shubman Gill scores century against England in his debut as Indian Test skipper at Headingley. Currently at 102*

Gill is quite good in ODIs but in my opinion Jaiswal will outshine Gill in Tests by the time they’re done.
Sai Sudarshan, notwithstanding his duck in his opening innings in Tests will do very well too.

Finally he got the spot that may be suitable for. Good batsman like him shouldn't be exposed to new ball. He was batting mostly as opener. It is hard to establish consistency in that spot.

Gill can take inspiration from Steve Waugh.

Waugh was averaging 36 after 46 at the age of 26 then later become 50+ average test Batsman .

Gill avg is 36 after 32 test at the age of 25 .

:kp

16th international century for Gill

7th in tests

2nd in England back to back

Has been a pleasant surprise in this series so far. Needs to do a lot more in Tests. An average of below 40 for a specialist top order batsman after 33 Tests is very poor output regardless of whatever excuse you make.

Indian cricket future ( next 10 years) lies with these guys- Gill, Jaiswal and Pant but we need a quality fast bowler to back them.

Gill is the third Indian captain with a 150-plus Test score before turning 26, after MAK Pataudi (twice) and Sachin Tendulkar.

THE FIRST INDIA CAPTAIN TO SCORE A DOUBLE HUNDRED IN ENGLAND!

Shubman Gill, absolutely sensational.

:kp

They said he can't play in t20, he scored 3 hundreds in a single IPL edition and highest individual T20i.

They doubted his place after Ishan Kishan scored 200. He scored 200 in ODI.

They taunted SENA scores, now back to back hundreds and big daddy double one. Yet to hit peak.

:kp

Gill averaging 40+ now after this knock. That’s the most important thing. Indian fans will hope and pray that test batting averages never ever drops below 40 now. The higher he can take it the better.

Sometimes, you just have to tip your hat to an incredible display of batting. One of the greatest overseas knocks by an Indian batsman.
