[PICTURES/VIDEOS] PSL should go head to head with IPL

Well, the proof is in the pudding. What, rather how are the ratings? Are the there big eyeballs on tv and rear ends in stadium seats throughout the season?

That will give us a very clear picture of the level of interest through the entire season.
We will watch the PSL and the Inds will watch IPL

By the World you mean 6 countries- Ind, PK,BD, SL and that's about it.
Don't just throw rubbish in the air about no one in the UK watches the IPL except Indians, or your new statement that only people from India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Sri Lanka watch it. I work at a sports bar and have seen plenty of white people come in to watch IPL matches. I also know British people who play cricket in local leagues who follow the IPL. obviously its not big as football but there is some sort of following, and sky isn't stupid that they would pay 6 billion dollars for a broadcast deal if no one watches it like you claim.

also show me your sources where your getting this information only selective countries watch IPL and no one in UK watches IPL

Forget about your little sample. Look at the viewing figures.

With SA T20 CPL and in future 100 all will be feeders of IPL , which means IPL and these leagues won't happen in parallel , PSL can coexist in IPl calendar.

But how cunning BCCI mafia is won't be surprised if they throw up something to dislodge PSL

You can’t really blame the BCCI when they’re paying their top players over a million dollars, while we’re only offering $300,000. Sure, we could compete with the IPL by signing million-dollar players, but who’s going to cover that cost?

That is not the point ,PSL with its limitations and budget constraints only need a secure calendar to run the league.

It’s never going to be as big as the IPL without big money behind it. We’re doing fine for what we are, it's basically just an upgraded domestic tournament with a few past-their-prime overseas players.

So you want me to show you. Do your own research. Aren't you the internet expert🤣🥰🥰🥰🥰
I'm not going to waste my time on a awful argument its a proven fact that viewership for IPL in UK is decent or else sky wouldn't have paid 6 billion to broadcast it with so much other sports to show on sky. its only to prove your delusional theory if you cant just :shh

The streaming and TV rights for the Indian Premier League - the world's richest cricket competition - for the next five years have been sold for a record $6.02bn (£5.13bn).

Viacom18, backed by Indian billionaire Mukesh Ambani, secured streaming rights until 2027 for $3.05bn.

Disney-owned Star India retained the TV contract for $3.02bn.

The two deals combined are more than double the $2.4bn Star paid for the previous five seasons of the IPL.

The figures put the IPL among the highest-ranked sport leagues alongside the NFL in the US and the English Premier League in cost-per-match terms.

The winning bid for the TV rights - a period that incorporates 410 IPL matches - were sold for about $7.36m (£6.1m) per game.

The digital streaming rights from 2023 for the annual two-month competition were sold for $6.4m per match.

Unless and until the country improves significantly economically. PSL also can't improve commercially to compete with IPL

That’s exactly my point—if we want to compete with the IPL, we need to invest the same amount of money, if not more. Until that happens, it’s better not to even consider competing unless @Bewal Express funds the tournament to make his dream a reality. For now, it’s best to have separate windows and focus on maximizing viewership, which will ultimately attract more revenue from advertisements and sponsorship or even attract broadcasters very unlikely though.

Depends how you look at it.
In my eyes we can never compete with IPL. Our focus should be on being the second best league.

The best way to do that is to use the IPL window. The players who don't play the IPL will get called up and international cricket comes to a standstill so there is no clash with anything.

PSL will become a good league for youngsters or older players and thats fine. Just like in Football not every league is the EPL.

The best time to play a league is when IPL is happening. Idk how many teams are there in the league but even if they had 15, it'd be like 90 international players & each country in the world has a pool of about 20-35 players who are test class.

So even if the true A-listers go here, there will be room to get good quality future stars & they'd also be motivated and hungry.

I wish Pak creates a sports city in a place where it is scenic & weather is temperate. They can build top class facilities using the power of establishment and then host the whole league there in one single place (multiple scenic grounds with RSA style grass banks, smaller crowds & expensive hospitality boxes ). Top players can be provided villas to stay in & full education facilities for the kids if they have any so they'll feel that it's an extra special opportunity which they can enjoy with the whole family. Most people don't realize that cricketers travel too much & are away from their family so if we eliminate useless travel, add amenities, offer family friendly work environment & a decent pay package, we can successfully run a parallel small alt league & even some A-listers might join in every now and then. The audience won't be global but Pak has enough fans to sustain their own league without too much of a hassle. As an alternate wish within this wish, I feel we can even time to time use our league as a traveling circus and host the playoffs in UK for added gate receipts. Would probably need to do some shrewd business deals with some county though.

By test class I don't mean a global superstar but a good cricketer. For example, Aus had Mitch Marsh play the test series but they had a completely solid replacement in Webster who wasn't famous before but was test class.

If top 25 Aus cricketers all go play IPL, there will still be some pretty decent players who would be free with nothing else to do. Same is the case with players who are considered over the hill, not important for T20 cricket but they are still decent players & are looking for both career growth as well as some monetary incentive.

Problem is that if PSL will happen along side IPl than no overseas broadcasters, Sponsers will show any interest at all( if they have any)

Yes currently they are still paying not much money to PCB but still good enough for PSL to attract some name . once nobody will take intrest to broadcast it outside Pakistan than PSL will be remains as just another Pakistani domestic T20 tournaments

If multiple international series can get shown why not multiple league?

For example BGT and Pak v SA was same time.

I agree, there's no way we can compete with the IPL, so that's out of the question.

But we can aim to be the second-best league after the IPL. For the league to work, it needs to make money, and that only happens if people are watching. If the PSL goes up against the IPL, viewership will drop, and broadcasters and sponsors won’t be interested.

Different time zone Plus pak vs South Africa series had nothing to do with rest of cricketing country's. .

IPL has the global fan following and every country top players are playing In the IPL so they does have interest with IPL

PSL can't compete with IPL if they happen during same period of time. You'll see how the rating of PSL falls after This year PSL.

Even if 8-10% of Indian cricket fan can watch PSL because there is no series/ League happening during that time than PSL viewership increase massively and it will be more than rest of countries viewership combined bar pakistan.

This year no indian broadcasters has the brought the rights of PSL because both league are happening at the same time while earlier year's Sony sports network had showed it live streaming .

This will happen in future with other overseas Broadcasters also once their current broadcasting contract will end's .

BGT was on as early as 2 AM in the UK, and the Pakistan vs. South Africa game started at 8:30 AM, so they overlapped. Since India and Pakistan are in the same time zone with matches starting at the same time, I can see people tuning in to watch stars like Buttler, Brook, or Rabada instead of players like Bosch, Milne, or Josh Little.

There is no competition. These are 2 domestic franchise leagues with following at home and by the Diaspora, abroad. Anyone that thinks that have any following outside is beyond delusion. When ITV 4( free to air) had the IPL the got viewers of around 400,000( decent but hardly earth shattering.) And out of the 400,000 most would have been the Inds the UK and other desis. There is no global branding, it's just Inds and PKs that watch and the few others.

Which people? Define your audience. Who much are they worth to the PSL? Bring figures to the table

£6b? Where did that come from? They don't even pay £6bn for the football. The ECB only gets around £200m a year and apparently they paid £6bn for the IPL.

@Devadwal @emranabbas

We can't be idealistic. PSL is under pressure from the international calendar and other leagues. Plus with the weather in Pakistan the IPL window is the only viable window. Now more and more boards are going down the road of not offering NOC and outside of the IPL windows there is just to many competing leagues.

Remember that when IPL started it was because of the Indian market that it took off. Being a hit at home is essential before a league can grow and flourish. PSL needs to work on its domestic audience first, creating a solid brand for itself year on year, before wondering about sponsors from abroad.

I know India is on another scale but they aren't relying on global sponsors or global watchers. They milk their own market. We need to make the PSL strong enough brand in Pakistan first.

There is two ways to do that - by attracting best possible international players , and making our own international team strong. Being in the IPL window won't stop us from doing either of these.

I agree with this and before Indians get annoyed this isn't having a go at them. IPL has MASSIVE domestic market.

However internationally it's low, and people trying to pick up rights are not picking them up because there is a market already but because they are hoping that there will be a market in years to come.

Englands own league ( the 100) has flopped a bit. Surely there isn't that much interest in IPL here

There is little interest in the IPL. No one would notice( bar the Inds) that sky are not showing it. And the fact that @emranabbas had to embarrassingly, make up a total fake figure is just legendary. £6bn eh?🤣🤣🤣

India is huge economy Plus huge cricketing mad pollution so they will always get big sponsers and broadcasting deals .

For PSL to gets Big deal pakistan economy has to be strong which is currently not the case .so they have to be more realistic.

PSL after 10 year hasn't made any significant profits and whatever small profit They has made its 90% distributed Between the fanshechies ( What a pathetic model by PCB )

PSL overseas quality was way better in 2015-17 period compared to current .

In coming years IPL team Will increased to 12 and so Will team's budget so i don't think PSL Will grabbed any top player if PSL happening during IPL time .

There is no global cricketing economy. It is sustained mainly by Indian fans.

Why do you think international tournaments cant survive without India Pakistan match? And why do you think most of the overseas leagues have teams bought by Indians?

Sky also bought CPL and PSL at one point. If you live in the UK they also sometimes show fishing and they buy the rights to e-sports.

They throw money around hoping something sticks.

I agree PSL hasn't grown so that's why I think the focus should be about growing it internally and getting Pakistanis hyped up about it rather than worrying about hypothetical global investors.

Nothing official but you can check post #497
I accept all the Ind figures for money and viewers. But the figures are so silly that even @emranabbas couldn't have made them up. For a start the total number of of figures outside the SC is less than 25mn. The UK has around 7mn and out of them around 700,000 watch cricket on a regular basis , with a maximum of around 2mn. Australia will half that and South Af will have even less. NZ has around a million and America will be similar.

According to data by Broadcasters Audience Research Board (BARB), the organisation that compiles audience measurement and television ratings in the UK, the IPL is gaining in popularity in that country.

Sky Sports Cricket, a UK pay-TV broadcaster that has the rights to air IPL matches, recorded 17 lakh live viewers between October 12-18 for IPL matches.

In addition, the cricketing league is being watched by over two lakh viewers every day in the UK. As many as 30 lakh viewers in the country watched the IPL in October.

The highest watched EPL matches, Liverpool versus Sheffield United and Arsenal versus Leicester, recorded 110,000 and 140,000 viewers, respectively.

The opening match of the IPL, between Mumbai Indians and Chennai Super Kings, was watched by around 168,000 viewers, according to Sky Sports data. In 2018, the opening match between the same teams was viewed by around 90,000 viewers.

You need to understand statistics a little better to make an argument that it's popular. 200,000 viewers, out of which more than half is Ind and other desis isn't going to bring in £6bn or or 10% of that. It's most likely to be less than 1% of that. I wouldn't be surprised that the figure is around £10mn, which is still very good for cricket and the viewing figures it gets. Cricket is dying in the UK amongst the White people and dead amongst the Afro- Caribbean. I work in a large comprehensive and I reckon that iess that 5% watch cricket, and less than 10% that like cricket at the national level.

So you are the expert that we need to listen to but For a guy that suggested that SKY paid £6bn, that is a lot of misplaced confidence. You can stick to watching IPL

Any league in any sport which doesn't have home or away can never ever ever work. You can never produce brand loyalty or a fanbase.

This isn't a Ramadan T20 festival competition. You're talking about our premier league.

Home and away
Icon Players pinned to franchises for years to build identity and rivalries.
Local players coming through PDPs to keep fans interested.
Decent caliber of international talent.

Those four are needed to really build this league. Right now we are only focussing on point 4...but the first three are more important.

biggest issue that has weakened PSL is quality of local players. there was a time when pak had about 30 or 40 decent domestic players, nowadays pak struggle to field a competent xi in t20is.

second biggest issue is lack of corporate competency in Pakistan, Pakistan does not have the business talent to develop and grow an international brand, the situation is worsened by nepotistic hires riddling the PCB like a cancer.

if PCB is clever they will schedule the games just out of sync to IPL, like maybe hour or two early or something, so people watch the games like undercard in a boxing fight, and if the games interesting some ppl might be willing to miss the start of an IPL game to catch the end of a PSL game.

There are no games in Peshawar & Quetta & for years we never even had games in Pak. A sports city offering amazing experience to both players and fans won't ever happen because it's too far fetched a concept but saying home or away is mandatory isn't factual.

Your idea is a good one that could work for international series.

Shane Watson will not be available to Quetta Gladiators as head coach during PSL 10 due to his prior commitments during the window .and his commitment is IPL .

@Bewal Express @DeadlyVenom now understand why is PSL can't go head to head with IPL

Who will be the PSL commenter's? Any ideas

:kp

PSL 2024 commentators: Australia – Michael Clarke, Mike Haysman. England – Mark Butcher, Dominic Cork. New Zealand – Danny Morrison, Simon Doull. West Indies – Ian Bishop. Zimbabwe – Mpumelelo ‘Pommie’ Mbangwa.

90% oversees commentators like of Clarke , bishop poomie, Danny , Simon doull etc already has contract with IPL

It's just something PSL will have to live with.

Tbh the idea of this competition seems to be driven by Indian more. PSL had the aim but it didn't turn out that way and they are in a consolidation phase. Most Pakistanis are ok with it

For example Indians come in thread to thread to laugh at how much players are getting paid and who is joining IPL whereas most Pakistanis are talking about the draft and the players to pick. BTW you have every right to do this given how Pakistanis tried to troll Indians about IPL. I'm just saying that most PSL fans are no longer fussed about direct comparisons.

If the league is good quality that's all that matters and so far the players have shaped up to be decent.

PSL should focus on attracting the best of upcoming talent that isn't in the IPL - that can be players, commentators or coaches it doesn't matter.

And not having home and away games is the reason why the league is floundering.

Instead of spending billions on your idea, it could be spent on improving security in the long term. And ensuring eg proper away fan tickets or organisations for QG PZs fans for games to produce loyalty.

There will be players who will pull out to play in the IPL as replacement.

Back your claim by numbers that the league is floundering and I'll accept your opinion.

This is my argument here

1. Gate receipts in Pak are okay, last year the stadiums other than Karachi were house full.
2. Massive difference between a two month tournament vis. a vis. a football league that runs for 9 months. My city isn't represented in this league, & I still watch it & I believe there are many more who do so. Rivalries in crickets evolve differently, a lot of people watch Pak national team play but when domestic cricket was livestreamed on Youtube, the total viewership of the stream was around 500-1K people (concurrent viewing)
3. I never stated that they should invest billions, it was just wishful thinking borne out of the inconvenience of being someone who had to face roadblocks, traffic stoppages, & general disruption to ordinary life because of cricket.

All franchises playing home games in their designated stadium will be one step towards adding more revenue

If the league is good quality that's all that matters and so far the players have shaped up to be decent.

PSL should focus on attracting the best of upcoming talent that isn't in the IPL - that can be players, commentators or coaches it doesn't matter.
There is no competition between IPL and PSL .i just stating the real facts and bursting the bubble of delusion .

Dont post much, but couldn't stop myself from posting this AI tidbit. just for fun, no disrespect intended.

The financial disparity is quite stark! Consider these amusing comparisons:
  1. IPL's drinks break sponsorship probably makes more money than PSL's entire season
  2. A bench player in IPL might earn more than a PSL team captain
  3. The cost of fireworks at one IPL opening ceremony could potentially fund an entire PSL team
  4. The amount IPL spends on cheerleaders' costumes might exceed PSL's marketing budget
  5. One IPL team's practice facility might be worth more than a PSL stadium
To put it in perspective:
  • The IPL auction purse for one team buys you most of the PSL
  • The IPL's lowest-paid waterboy might earn more than some PSL domestic players
  • Even IPL's inaugural season in 2008 was financially stronger than PSL in 2025
It's like comparing a luxury cruise ship (IPL) to a fishing boat (PSL) - they're both on water, but operating in completely different leagues! Though PSL has its own charm and has done well given its resources, when it comes to financial muscle, IPL is playing a completely different game. The gap is so wide that even PSL's best financial years might look like pocket change to IPL franchises!

This is a key point. Something that will affect PSL in the long run. As IPL expands, there will be more overseas slots and hence more overseas players picked. This will significantly affect the unsigned by IPL player pool. Where PSL will likely draft from.

Not sure what this adds to the thread? Or which posters would argue PSL is richer

Another Indian looking to massage his ego. Only reason any money India has because of its huge population and aversion to contraceptives. You give Congo 1.5 billion people it'd be rich too

PSL knows it cannot take on IPL and its a fact, but whatever product they are offering just to try to make it quality or improve its quality.

Just like in Football EPL is the richest league but it's not always the most successful or competitive league, over the years Bundesliga & La liga have proven it.

Same goes for PSL, try to have all franchises a designated stadium and play games on home & away basis, franchise should look for good scouting to buy young players from Australia England WI NZ etc.

If 2 more teams are to be added , then its not rocket science to go for Sialkot Rawalpindi or Faisalabad, rather 1 team from Karachi and Lahore can be added.

These are some aspects which PSL management need to look into, but we've heard most of PCB meetings are only for Chai Biscuits

Let them expand, let them take all the players and it will make little difference to PKs watching. The primary audience for both is local and foreign based nationals. There is no global market or anything approaching a global brand.

Correct. PSL first needs to put in place a proper home-away setup. Secondly, they have to re-negotiate/rewrite the whole profit sharing agreement currently in place. Where the PSL/PCB gets a better share of the profits.

These two things need to happen before they move on to expansion. Which is also needed to grow the league. I think these three things will take the league to the next level and beyond.

But given how things have been run so far, I do not see much changing. PSL could remain in the sort of stagnant situation that it seems be currently in.

Of course all T20 leagues are for local audience. But the player pool talent is fairly significant issue for the league. The whole overseas player in the teams is an important marketing tool. As that gets diluted, it will have some sort of impact on growth.

But PSL needs to do a few other things before they even get to the foreign player pool. Let's see if they do that.

Not really. We PKs, whether at home or abroad will watch and the same for the Inds. It's a total myth peddled by marketing men and bought by gullible people that there is some big international market in America and Uk waiting to be tapped but there isn't.
The PSL and the PCB need to work hard on improving standards within the domestic game- our fielding is very poor and concerted effort needs to be made at all levels to improve it, we need stronger domestic competition to challenge our players.

its crazy how indians don't defend their cricket team as jingoistically as they defend the status of the IPL no one is arguing the IPL is the biggest league in the world, but the PSL doesn't have to be the richest or biggest to produce a product that can stand on its own in terms of entertainment for an audience. the fact that it is financially not on the scale of the IPL does not diminish it, and the financial status of the IPL, and its scale does not grant the IPL any real merits in non commercial terms.

Both leagues essentially peddle a formula script cricket match repeated over a period that makes semi-entertaining background noise to people's daily lives. Comparing different leagues, money notwithstanding is literally like comparing fertilisers. Yes, it serves a purpose in nourishing the cricket economy, but don't get too emotionally invested in what is essentially poop.

BOSCH RULED OUT OF PSL 10.

Mumbai Indians signed Corbin Bosch, who was previously picked by Peshawar Zalmi in the PSL X draft
