[PICTURES/VIDEOS] Rachin Ravindra: A generational all-rounder from New Zealand

Rachin Ravindra bang on money in his IPL debut, made 37(15) in his first match for CSK against RCB today.

Rachin Ravindra justifying every bit of penny spent on him by CSK. Played a splendid knock of 46(20) today against the Gujrat Titans. Would he be the top scorer in IPL this season.

He was unlucky to get out. He was set to score a 40 ball hundred the way he was going.

Phenomenal batter.

What a revelation he was while opening in the World Cup. His inclusion is what turned NZ from a mediocre side which looked extremely unlikely to qualify to one of the strongest top order lineups.

Even in the T20 World Cup, he has to open with Finn. One of Conway/KW have to make way for him in that Top 5.

Hussey hails Rachin Ravindra for making fast start to IPL career

Keeping a clear head and showing plenty of positive intent has helped Chennai Super Kings batter Rachin Ravindra make a strong start to his Indian Premier League (IPL) career, the team’s batting coach Michael Hussey said.

New Zealand all-rounder Ravindra emerged as a hot prospect for IPL teams after finishing as the fourth-highest scorer in the 50-over World Cup in India last year with 578 runs including three centuries.

Some Royal Challengers Bengaluru fans had hoped Ravindra would join them, given his roots in the city, but having joined their fierce southern rivals Chennai in the player auction the 24-year-old has hit the ground running in his debut IPL season.

“Yeah, he’s had a great start. It's been awesome to watch. He’s just come here full of energy and he just wants to learn so much and make a positive impact on the team environment. “It’s fantastic,” former Australia batter Hussey told reporters.

“He’s enjoying his time and soaking up as much knowledge as he possibly can.”

After taking two catches - including a stunner to dismiss Virat Kohli - and making 37 off 15 balls in Chennai’s win over Bengaluru last week, Ravindra smashed 46 off 20 balls to lay the platform for Tuesday’s 63-run victory over Gujarat Titans.

“He really feeds off the crowd as well. Once he got a couple of good shots away early (against Gujarat), his confidence grew and he believed he could perform on this stage,” Hussey added.

“I think he’s gone out there with a clear mind and positive attitude.”

Rachin Ravindra has orchestrated another good performance for CSK today, fifty up for him against RCB but still the job not done yet.

Rachin Ravindra told while talking to local NZ media outlet ahead of the first Test against Sri Lanka:

“We’ve got players who have had experience in these conditions and who are world-class players. Working with the spinners, being able to bowl in tandem with [Mitchell Santner] and [Ajaz Patel] and learn from Rangana - a guy who’s taken 400-odd test wickets - I’m just trying to pick their brains as much as I can."

“It’s certainly disappointing whenever the rain falls, but as mates and teammates we always find ways to keep ourselves busy. There was a bit of a hallway cricket Test series going on – me and the skipper versus Tommy Blundell and Dev Conway."

“I think we came away victorious 6-1 in the series and each was five matches, so it did get quite competitive. We’re competitive people, we were going at each other a little too much, but it was nice to get the juices flowing."

Rachin Ravindra is on fire! 91* not out at the end of Day 3 against Sri Lanka in 1st Test. Fingers crossed he reaches his century tomorrow and helps New Zealand take control of the match

Rachin Ravindra's magnificent innings comes to a close, falling short of guiding New Zealand to victory. Despite 92 runs off 168 balls (9x4, 1x6), he couldn't seal the win. Hopefully, he'll turn the tables in the future

Rachin Ravindra's hundred is the first by a New Zealand batter in India since Ross Taylor's 113 runs at the same venue in 2012.

What a player he is

Following defeat to New Zealand in 1st Test, Rohit Sharma praised Rachin Ravindra in post-match conference:

"Our spinners tried and did everything possible to extract whatever was there on the pitch. Some of the shots that Rachin played were really really good. He played very good cricket and played well against the spinners. They challenged him but you got to give him credit. He understood what our spinners tried to do and did not back off from playing his natural game, which is what gave him the result against our quality spinners."

"There will be times when some of the batters who come to India will play against our spinners. We saw in the first Test of the England series where a couple of the batters scored hundred."

"Even here, Rachin and Devon Conway played well and put our bowlers under pressure by playing different shots which we are expecting from their batters. Anyone who is coming to India is trying to put pressure on the Indian bowlers by doing different things but we know exactly what we want to do, they played well, they got the results, they got the runs."

Most of his noteworthy performances so far have only been in India. Will be interesting to see how he fares in other conditions.

New Zealand introduced him to international cricket in a well managed way and he has done very well so far. I thought he was a bits and pieces player when he first started.

His batting against spin in the last test was something else. You just don't see batters take on Ashwin and Jadeja in India with this kind of assurity and confidence. Certainly not guys as young as him who have just started their test career. He is a seriously good player of spin-bowling.

From what I’ve seen I think rachindra will go down as the greatest Indian batsman of all time.

Indian origin man of the match, wins a test match in India for his country of birth - New Zealand, after 36 long years. What a find for New Zealand. Next superstar allrounder in the making, for years to come.

Fantastic player. The best Indian batsman of the new generation might not even play for India.

Jokes apart, he has everything in his locker to surpass Kane Williamson and Crowe as NZ’s greatest batsman. His potential is incredible.

Happy for him and his dad, works hard and tries to improve.
If he keeps up the pace he will become the best South Asian origin batsman to not play for a South Asian country.

CSK I think have hit the jackpot.

Three of the NZ starting eleven are CSK players. Ravindra being the best of them. I am fairly sure he will be retained by CSK and not let into the auction.

I never watched the Likes of Crowe, Fleming and Glen Turner, and its usually not a good thing to jump to early conclusions, but I am convinced that Rachin Ravindra will become New Zealands GOAT batsman if he continues to perform the way he currently is.

If he can perform in Aus/SA he will easily reach goat NZ status

He should be the best batter for New Zeland in this series against India. He played beautifully in the first game and should be doing even better in the 2nd.

Seeing a lot of people changing their positive opinions about him now and rightfully so.

He's been absolutely rubbish in the first two tests.

It is a little strange, he seems to be comfortable on the sub continental wickets but struggles outside the sub continent but he lives in NZ

He's a youngish player who is going through a phase where he is out of form. No doubt he will bounce back, like most players do.

He seems hellbent on throwing his wicket away with soft dismissal after another.

Poor series for him.

A nasty hit on the face while attempting a catch.

He has walked off due to bleeding during the first match of the Tri-Nation ODI Series between Pakistan and New Zealand.

New Zealand Cricket issues update on Rachin Ravindra’s injury

The New Zealand Cricket has provided a fitness update on opening batter Rachin Ravindra who was struck in the forehead during the PAK vs NZ game of the tri-nation series.

The incident happened in the 38th over of the second innings when Rachin Ravindra lost sight of the bowl while going for a catch off Michael Bracewell.

The ball struck the New Zealand batter in the forehead and he was left bloodied.

Following the PAK vs NZ game, New Zealand Cricket said that Ravindra sustained a ‘laceration’ to the forehead, however, he was ‘otherwise well.’

“[Rachin] Ravindra was forced from the field after being struck in the forehead by the ball attempting a catch in the 38th over. He sustained a laceration to the forehead which has been addressed and treated at the ground, but is otherwise well. He came through his first HIA (Head Injury Assessment) well and will continue to be monitored under HIA processes,” the board said in a statement.

50 up for Rachin Ravindra against Bangladesh in ICC Champions Trophy 2025. Playing a vital knock for his side in his maiden CT tournament appearance

What a talented batter this lad is. I like how the runs keep flowing when he’s batting. Quite a fearless confident batter.

Another high class ICC tournament century for Rachin bhai.

Well done brother

‘Grateful’ Ravindra credits love and support after making clutch return from injury

Rachin Ravindra could hardly have produced a better performance after returning from a nasty head knock. But he moved quickly to ensure the credit for New Zealand's recent success got shared around.

Welcome back, Rachin Ravindra.

After suffering what he labeled a ‘freak accident’ while fielding in the lead up to the ICC Champions Trophy, the 25-year-old star made not only an emphatic return against Bangladesh, but one that also slots him in the history books. Talk about a comeback.

Ravindra became the first player in history to score a century on debut in both the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup and also the Champions Trophy.

His latest clutch performance, scoring 112 runs off 105 balls after coming to the crease with his side under some pressure, was an assertive repaying of the faith selectors showed in the Kiwi star.

Dealing with both a nasty laceration and also having to navigate return-to-play protocols, from the incident he suffered against Pakistan earlier in the month, Ravindra showed no signs of being hindered by his adverse tournament preparations.

“It was cool to come back and really enjoy my cricket again after that weird moment,” he told the media after New Zealand’s victory that sealed their place in the semi-finals of the event.

“In terms of the Black Caps setup, thanks to the coaches, (doctor) and physio, I’ve been able to come out of it reasonably well.

“I’ve been showered with so much care and love and it really does make me seriously happy knowing how many people care about me and I’m very grateful to everyone who’s reached out and given their support, so thank you for that.

“I’m extremely grateful for the love and support of everyone.”

The Kiwis successfully chased down 236/9 with 23 balls to spare and five wickets in hand.

And while Ravindra fired with the bat, New Zealand also benefited greatly from the bowling of right-arm spinner Michael Bracewell, who finished with 4/26 from his 10 overs.

“‘Beastie’ (Bracewell) bowled out of his skin,” Ravindra continued.

“The development of him as a cricketer over the last few years has been amazing to watch. He’s learning his craft so well and seeing him be so consistent, as he is recently, is amazing.

“It gives so much depth to our spin attack. Obviously led by ‘Sant’ (Mitchell Santner), who’s a world class bowler, one of the best in the world, and having someone like ‘Mike’ (Bracewell) to supplement him in that is great.”

When he first came onto the scene I thought he would be a great bat. But he has the sub continentalitis aka looks good on wickets with no bounce but the minute there is bounce he doesn't look good.

Aus/SA series away from NZ will show how good he really is..

Sure, he loves ICC tournaments zx

Very good to watch. Free flowing, classy batting style, leftie.

Rachin Ravindra – a rising star to keep an eye on for the future!

His fifth ODI 100 and all have come in ICC tournaments!

5 centuries in ICC events

This man might break all records

His father really made him a complete batsman, insane how good he is in ICC tournaments.

Rachin Ravindra has now surpassed the former India cricketer Shikhar Dhawan to hold the record for the least innings taken to score five centuries in ICC ODI tournaments like the Champions Trophy and the World Cup. Along with the two tons he scored in the ongoing tournament, he has also scored three centuries in the 2023 ODI World Cup, where New Zealand were eliminated in the semi-final stages.

Rachin Ravindra is only the fifth cricketer in the world after Pakistan’s Saeed Anwar, India’s Sourav Ganguly, Sri Lanka’s Upul Tharanga, and India’s Shikhar Dhawan to score multiple centuries in one edition of the ODI World Cup and Champions Trophy.

This guy is scary for the final

Big game hunting: The true extend of Ravindra's early-career ICC event dominance

Rachin Ravindra walked out to the middle on October 5, 2023, after teammate Will Young was removed for a golden duck.

Aiming to defend 282, England had their tails up and Sam Curran still had five to come in what was his first over.

That was the scenario confronting Ravindra in his first ever ICC Men's Cricket World Cup innings – an objectively daunting proposition for even the most promising of cricket prodigies.

But 35 overs later, the Wellington product had made the most emphatic of arrivals.

Ravindra blasted an unbeaten 123* from 96 balls, steering the Black Caps to a comfortable nine-wicket win alongside Devon Conway, in an innings that would prove to be as impressive as it was instructive. Given he also contributed with the ball in the first innings, taking one wicket and bowling 10 overs, Ravindra did more than enough to earn Player of the Match honours.

That was just his 13th One Day International, ninth innings and first century in the format.

He would go on to reach three figures two other times in the World Cup in India, along with two additional fifties, averaging 64 in his first ICC tournament as a 23-year-old.

Ravindra was born for the big stage, so it’s come as no surprise that his World Cup form has carried over to the Champions Trophy 2025.

In four innings, the 25-year-old has scored 251 total runs at a strike rate of 106, averaging 62.75. He’s tonned up twice, including a 108 off 101 balls in the semi-final against South Africa.

In what remains a young international career, Ravindra averages 63.76 with the bat in ICC events, scoring at faster than a run-a-ball (106 strike rate).

So come the Champions Trophy Final in Dubai, you can bet he’ll be big game hunting once again; it appears to be unmistakingly in his DNA.

Kane Williamson spent nearly two hours at the crease with Ravindra in the Black Caps’ successful semi-final. The pair put on 164 for the second wicket, as New Zealand set an imposing 362/6 from their 50 overs – a mark the Proteas would fall 50 runs shy of.

The Kiwi veteran was waxing lyrical about his ‘incredibly special’ compatriot post-game, enjoying the best seat in the house for the Ravindra show.

“It's always great to bat with him,” Williamson said.

“He goes out and he puts the team first and he plays with that freedom. He's so gifted, really, really confident, clear in what he's trying to do. We've seen it on so many occasions, in big tournaments where he stood up and shone, and we've seen it here again in this one.

“Hopefully he can continue that moving forward into this next match. But a special talent, not only that but contribution with the ball too.

“We missed him while he had his little injury for a while there but just took a couple of weeks off and came back and is batting beautifully – great to watch.”

India is all-too aware of Ravindra’s big stage threat. The world’s top-ranked ODI batter, Shubman Gill, can still recall moments of his rival’s debut World Cup in 2023.

“I remember seeing him,” he reminisced in the lead-up to Sunday’s Champions Trophy decider in Dubai.

“They were in the other group, but I remember watching some of his highlights. He's a very dangerous batsman at the top and we'll try to take his wicket as early as possible for us and if we are able to do that, I think we'll be right in the game.”

Dubai International Stadium has proven to be a bowling-friendly deck, placing runs at an even higher premium in the Final.

But given Ravindra’s additional talent as a left arm orthodox, he has a multi-faceted role to play for New Zealand, who will look to end a 25-year Men’s ICC white ball tournament drought.

The stakes and pressure, in equal parts, are higher in a winner-takes-all Final. But the moment, whether with the bat or ball, certainly won’t be too big for Rachin Ravindra.

216 - Ibrahim Zadran (72 avg)

Undeserving MOTT in my opinion.

You cannot win a MOTT when you don’t perform in 2 games in the same tournament against the ultimate winner.

I guess a consolation for the losing team like it’s becoming a norm these days

Well played nevertheless

He’s a superstar and one for the future. Guys gonna break all ICC tournaments batting records if he keeps going like that.

Easily the best batsman of the tournament.
Gave a very good performance today but wasn’t enough.

He looked nervous in the final and wasn’t comfortable. Apart from a few boundaries in Hardik's overs, he bottled the job. He’s lucky to have scored 37 runs; he was dropped twice.

He doesn’t deserve the Player of the Tournament award. Shreyas Iyer played more impactful innings. Rachin scored on the halwa Pakistani pitches, whereas Iyer scored during the difficult conditions.

Rachin Ravindra after receiving the Man of the Series award in the post-match ceremony:

“Certainly is bitter-sweet. Was a glorious final. The individual accolades are great and playing for a team is great,”

“Maybe we get to play on a good wicket. I like playing tournament cricket because you are playing for a goal. Very proud of my past. Have so many people to thank."

“It would have been nice to have the icing on the cake with the trophy but cricket is a cruel game. All members of the squad have a part to play. There isn't an established player or a newbie. We go about our business and play like a team.”

What a player he is. ICC emerging payer of the year is now a top-tier batter. What a rise this is.

You guys have won the the tournament and you are still crying. Alle SC batsmen are used to Dubai wickets, they do play on similar slow wickets quite often.

But yeah, player of the tournament should go to India, Team of the tournament should also have only indians, heck even the best 12th man award should go to an indian and there should be an award for the best toss loser also, woh bhi tumhara hai, hou sakta hai tum tabb chain ki neend sou sakou lol.

Dominant player who's easy on the eye. Just looks like a solid character with discipline, confidence and focus. And lots of talent. Might go down as the greatest KIWI batter in all formats.

Many said the same. ANother strong contender Varun C. He was the most impactful bowler of the tournament. Every time they needed a break he stepped up. He creaed chances. He even had Rachin mistime the ball. We dropped the catch.
