[PICTURES/VIDEOS] Shakib Al Hasan announces his retirement from international cricket after the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 [Post Updated #391]

Should be permanently removed from the team imo.

It's not the success, it's the team's failure. Bangladesh cricket is a joke and Shakib knows it. That's his leverage. Over half his teammates wouldn't be good enough to be picked for Ranji/Sheffield/County

thats what i mean. his success as being the best bangladesh has produced makes him think he is better than bangla cricket, that he doesnt need to mould future cricketer as a mentor. Pakistan and SL struggled for years in early part but our ancestors never gave him, one generation learned from another and didnt throw a tantrum

Reminds me a bit of what ABD was doing in 2018-2019. Either way, Bangladesh has already entered a new era and Shakib's services are no longer required. BCB selectors can just proceed without thinking about him.

Pakistan were competitive straight away.

Enough of these prima donnas

A lesson must be taught

Such a shameless individual

9 days after apparently taking a break until April 30, he walks in at #3 in the first ODI at Centurion and smashes 77 from 64 to take Bangladesh above 300.

Quite the unpredictable entity is Shakib :)

His conduct is not ideal but he is the best Asian cricketer of his era. I place him 4th in amongst Asians overall- after Khan, SRT and Murali.

Good joke :))). Not even top 10 asian cricketers of his era!

He is a genuinely multidimensional player. Yes Ashwin and Jadeja are also ARs but he is a superior allrounder to either of them. Shak is a top class top and a top class bowler.

Jadeja is as good a batsman in tests and much better as a bowler. Ashwin is one of the greatest spinners of all time. Shakib is a decent batsman and above average bowler in tests. Even if we don't count Ashwin, Shakib is nowhere near Jadeja as an allrounder in tests.

Family members of all-rounder Shakib al Hasan, who is currently on tour with the national team in South Africa, have been admitted to the Evercare Hospital with various illness.

A source from Shakib’s family confirmed the information to Bangla Tribune on Sunday midnight.

It was learnt that, Shakib’s mother Shirin Akhter has been admitted to the hospital for last few days due to heart complications.

Shakib’s only son and second daughter have also been admitted to the hospital as they are suffering from pneumonia.

And his elder daughter is also suffering from cold and fever.

It was also learnt that, Shakib’s mother-in law is also admitted into hospital who is suffering from cancer.

Jadeja is a no-show outside of Asia. Shakib has done it everywhere.

Leaves his team when playing against top teams in their den. No respect for the likes of Shakib.

BCB shouldn't have forced him to travel, seems like he is going through a lot. Cricket is just a sport, family comes first.

This is truly sad. I feel bad for bashing him for being a drama queen. He needs to get on the first flight and attend to his family. Wish them well.

Shakib is good but Pakistan are wasting a player like Mohammad Nawaz who can be their Shakib with the bat and ball.

Premier all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has taken himself to a new height as he has bagged a five-wicket haul and also scored a fifty in a Test on 10 occasions, the second most after legendary all-rounder Ian Botham of England.

Shakib, playing his 61st Test, notched his 27th fifty and bagged his 19th fifer in Tests in the ongoing game against Sri Lanka. Meanwhile, Botham, who played a total of 102 Tests, has bagged a fifer and scored a fifty in the same Test on 11 occasions.

Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan strongly opined that to be named as the next Bangladesh Test captain, Shakib al Hasan first needs to decide on his availability for the duty.

The statement from Nazmul came on the back of strong discussion in the cricket fraternity of the BCB mulling to replace Mominul Haque as the Test captain and give charge to Shakib.

Nazmul gave his opinion to a leading national English daily in the sidelines of a meeting at his residence in Dhaka Tuesday.

Mominul has been under heavy criticism recently for his below par performance with the bat and also failing to lead Bangladesh Test team to positive results.

The voice against Mominul and to relieve him from the captaincy role got sturdier following Bangladesh’s 1-0 defeat against visitors Sri Lanka on the back of horrible batting failures in the second game of the series last week.

“I heard about it (Monday) [that Shakib is being tipped as the next Test captain]. Shakib was always in all the formats for Bangladesh. But before reaching a decision [of making Shakib the Test captain], I at least need to know whether Shakib will play or not. If he becomes captain then he cannot pick and choose [between series and tours]. First, we need to know what Shakib's plan is,” said Nazmul.

“I like the fact that Shakib is a straightforward guy. I know what he wants. The only thing that I don't know is when he will call and say, 'I won't play'. The only problem with Shakib is that he says at the last moment that he won't be a part of a tour or a series. But if he is to become the next Test captain, he cannot do any such thing. There is no other problem with Shakib,” the BCB boss added.

Nazmul further emphasized that there has been no discussion of replacing Mominul as the captain and based on that the cricketer has been named as skipper for Bangladesh’s next Test assignment, in the West Indies next month.

“I actually do not want it [to replace Mominul as captain]. I do not have a problem with his captaincy. That we are thinking of replacing him or may replace him, nothing of this sort has been communicated with Mominul from me or any of us in the BCB,” said Nazmul.

“Not only for this upcoming series [against the West Indies], I actually do not have any intention of changing personnel in the Bangladesh team [in any format] right now,” he added.

Nazmul further said he will only make any decision after a meeting with Mominul.

I don't think Shakib should be the captain. He is probably close to retirement anyway.

Make Litton captain. He seems like a calm guy with a good brain.

Another resignation.

Has every Bangladesh squad member been the captain yet?

The Bangladesh Cricket Board [BCB] has named Shakib al Hasan as the new Test captain. The BCB in a meeting on Thursday at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium took the decision after Mominul Haque on Tuesday had decided to step down from the role.

“We never gave any time frame for Tamim and Mahmudullah. It has been set by you people [media]. Shakib will remain [Test] captain until there is need of further discussion,” said Nazmul.

It was sort of well-established that BCB is going to hand Bangladesh ace all-rounder Shakib the charge given there is not enough option. There was however wide discussion if the decision will be wise given Shakib has recently started a trend of not being available for all national team duties.

Nazmul claimed he and few others spoke to Shakib on this and that the cricketer said he will be fully available.

“We spoke to him and as far as I know he will play [all series for Bangladesh]. There is Zimbabwe tour [which doesn’t involve Test matches] after West Indies, he will unsure of that. But he will be available for all matches and all formats after that. Of course, he will be available for all Test matches - we had this as one of the criteria before selecting him,” said Nazmul.

“We had three names from which we needed to decide the captain and the vice-captain. Now if Shakib had decided to not take the captaincy, we would have chosen one from the remaining two options.

The occasion is third that the BCB has given Shakib charge of the Bangladesh Test team. Shakib first played as captain in Tests in 2009 in place of an injured Mashrafe bin Mortaza in tour of West Indies. In his first Term, all-rounder Shakib played the role for 13 months and led Bangladesh in nine Tests and won one. Shakib was relieved from the role in 2011 following below par performance in Zimbabwe tour.

In 2017, Shakib was made the Bangladesh Test captain for the second time along with the charge of leading the T20I side. This time Shakib guided Bangladesh in five Tests and won two Tests against West Indies at home but faced a humiliating defeat against Afghanistan. Shakib would have led the team further if the International Cricket Council [ICC] had not imposed a ban for failing to report corrupt approaches. In such situation BCB had found Mominul Haque to lead Bangladesh in Test cricket.

Bangladesh till date have played 14 Tests under Shakib and have won three and lost 11. Under Mominul Bangladesh have played 17 Tests, won three, lost 11 and finished two matches as draw. Mominul had led Bangladesh to win their first Test against New Zealand in New Zealand, earlier this year.

Shakib closes in on Jadeja on latest ICC Test all-rounder rankings

Bangladesh captain Shakib al Hasan has moved closer to re-claiming his crown as the best all-rounder in Test cricket by jumping up to second on the latest list of ICC MRF Tyres Test Player Rankings.

Shakib moved up two spots to second on the latest all-rounder rankings that were released by the ICC on Wednesday, with India left-hander Ravindra Jadeja the only player now in front of him.

Shakib has been in action for Bangladesh in the ongoing Test series against West Indies in the Caribbean and the 35-year-old produced an excellent performance with the bat in particular during the first Test of the two-match series.

The Bangladesh skipper top-scored in the first innings with a stylish 51 and backed that up in the second innings with an even more impressive knock of 63 that helped force West Indies to bat a second time.

If Shakib was to re-claim the top ranking for all-rounders it would cap off a massive turnaround for one of Bangladesh's greatest players of all time.

Shakib first claimed the top ranking for Test all-rounders way back in December of 2011 and has since maintained his position near the top despite some injury concerns late in his career.

He currently has a rating of 346 points, but still has a long way to go if he wants to overtake Jadeja at the head of proceedings who has an outstanding 385 rating points.

Shakib also jumped up 14 places to 32nd on the latest Test batting rankings, with new No.1 Joe Root hanging on to top spot following his exploits against New Zealand earlier this month.

Bangladesh Cricket Board president Nazmul Hasan informed that the board is still unsure if Shakib al Hasan will be available for the three-match ODI series against the West Indies in the ongoing tour.

According to Nazmul, Shakib so far spoke of his desire to take leave from the Windies ODIs verbally to BCB cricket operations committee chairman Jalal Younus and that it can be considered as an official communication.

Dhaka Tribune on May 21 had revealed Shakib’s intention to skip the ODIs in the Caribbean Islands and take leave to spend the time with family.

The three-ODI series against the West Indies is not part of the ICC Cricket World Cup Super League.

Nazmul while speaking to the media at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium following a board meeting Wednesday said Shakib had initially thought of not playing the Test matches in the Caribbean.

This however, changed after the cricketer was handed the captaincy role.

It is understood that a majority of the BCB decision makers including Bangladesh head coach Russell Domingo was against giving Shakib the charge as Test captain, which Nazmul did not agree to.

“I did not speak to Shakib [about his leave] yet. Initially I had heard that he didn’t want to play Test matches [in the West Indies]. But then I had a meeting with him and he was handed the Test captain role,” said Nazmul.

“I have heard that he spoke to Jalal bhai about not playing the ODI series in the West Indies. He had informed so before going to the West Indies. He did not speak about it with the board yet. We will have a better understanding about it after speaking to him in a day or two. But as he has spoken to Jalal, it can be considered as official,” the BCB boss added.

Nazmul doesn’t see anything wrong in the senior members of the team taking leave as long as the matches do not affect the rankings.

Rather, the leaves work as workload management for the players and it creates opportunity for the young players.

“I do not see anything wrong in it [with the senior players taking leave]. It is fine as long as they are they taking leave from matches that do not affect the [ICC] rankings. This gives us the opportunity to try out new players. This doesn’t depend on us and we also need to know if we have the replacements. I also understand that they need the break,” said Nazmul.

Bangladesh following the tour of the West Indies is scheduled to travel to Zimbabwe in July-August for three ODIs and as many T20Is.

The ODI matches are not part of the Super League and it is understood that many players including Shakib are mulling not being part of the tour.

Shakib is another AB.

Not sure what he himself wants, but clearly will always be wanted because of so much talent.

BCB will forever play catch up sadly.

Shakib Al Hasan To Miss Bangladesh's White-Ball Tour Of ZimbabweShakib Al Hasan has opted out of Bangladesh's limited overs tour of Zimbabwe.Asian News InternationalUpdated: July 08, 2022 06:03 PM ISTRead Time:2 min

After the conclusion of the ODI series against West Indies, Shakib Al Hasan will skip Bangladesh's white-ball tour of Zimbabwe. As per the a media report, Tamim Iqbal, Mahmudullah and Mushfiqur Rahim, the other three senior players, are available for the Zimbabwe tour.

"Most of the senior players are available. They all want to play (in Zimbabwe). Shakib informed us that he isn't going. We have confirmed a team with the selectors. A full-strength team will go to Zimbabwe. It is an important series although (the World Cup Super League) points are not involved. But we want to do well there. Many people said it would be a second-string team but no, we want to send a strong Bangladesh side," media site quoted BCB's cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus as saying.

"Tamim will let us know, may be after this series or end of July," Yunus said.

"He had asked for time till July and he was supposed to inform us in August. At the end of July, or at the beginning of August, he will inform. We don't have to give reminders. We have held plenty of meetings with him. So there is nothing to remind him of," he added.

"He didn't even tell us if he is available for the (T20) World Cup. Forget the World Cup, whether or not he will play T20Is is important. We were always positive and we wanted him. The decision belongs to him, not us," said Yunus.

How can he keep “opting out” of various tours at will? If the selectors choose to rest him, fair enough, but he has way too much power with this stuff. Terrible approach on his part.

Not setting a good predecessor for the upcoming players.

Jacques Kallis played much more cricket than Shakib but never opted to miss series.

Shakib seems finished.

He has been scoring soft runs and getting soft wickets lately. Not the match-winner like he was a while ago.

That was my point. In some countries, players do hold extraordinary powers due to their extraordinary talents. IK had it, so did AB.

Unlike IK, I feel the others are not clear in communicating where they stand and in some cases, opt out when their country needs them.

Bangladesh Cricket Board is set to serve Shakib al Hasan a show cause notice for his involvement with a brand affiliated to one of the biggest online gambling portals of the world.

Shakib last Tuesday irked many in the cricket fraternity after he announced involvement with Betwinner News, which is a surrogate promotion of online betting and gaming portal Betwinner.

Betwinner holds a valid online gambling license from the government of Curacao and is under parent company 1X Corp N.V.

The company owns many other online betting portals including the most famous one – 1xbet.

BCB president Nazmul Hasan while speaking to the media Thursday following BCB Board of Directors’ meeting at Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium informed that Shakib did not take the No Objection Certificate from the board to get involved with Betwinner News.

“He [Shakib] did not take the NOC from the board in the first place because we would have never allowed it. We will never allow if the affiliation is with a betting company, the board is very clear about this. So, it means he did not take the permission from the board. Secondly, we need to know if has signed a contract with them [Betwinner],” said Nazmul.

“We had a discussion on this in the meeting [Thursday]. I have told the board to ask Shakib if he has signed a contract with them and to serve him a show cause notice. The board will not allow this. Board will now allow this if it has any relation with a betting company,” he added.

When queried of possible action the board will take against Shakib, Nazmul said, “Not only the board but even the laws of the land doesn’t allow this [betting or gambling]. So, this is a very serious issue. So rather than being judgmental on his [Shakib] social media posts, I think it is better to speak to him first. We need to understand his intention. Board will take action as per its laws and regulations.”

Shakib took to his social media accounts to announce his partnership with Betwinner News and said, “Dear fans! I am proud to announce my new official partnership with Betwinner News!”

Come on, Shakib. Why would you associate with a betting company? I hope this is not accurate.

Bangladesh Cricket Board is yet to reach a solution on their latest issue with star and controversial cricketer Shakib al Hasan regarding the latter’s involvement with a sister concern of a betting organization.

BCB president Nazmul Hasan following Shakib’s revelation of endorsing Betwinner News said the board cannot allow involvement of its contracted cricketers to firms that the laws of the land do not permit and that a show cause notice was to be served to the all-rounder.

Nazmul had claimed that Shakib did not inform or obtain the No Objection Certificate from the board before going into the collaboration with Betwinner.

BCB cricket operations committee chairman Jalal Younus while speaking to the media Monday informed that they are yet to solve the issue and believes that Shakib as an experienced cricketer will surely understand the point the board has established.

“We are in contact with him [Shakib] over the issue. We already spoke to him several times about this. We need to solve this matter, hopefully we will be able to that in a day or two,” said BCB director Jalal.

It is understood that Shakib has already placed his argument to the BCB with regards to the issue.

According to reports, Shakib has questioned the board as to why he should not be allowed to endorse Betwinner News, given that it’s simply a news portal and has no relation to betting.

Jalal while clarifying the point said, “It [Betwinner News] might not be involved with betting but it is owned by a betting company. We [BCB] have zero tolerance towards such organizations. His [Shakib] contract is with a company owned by a betting organization. We have already informed him this.

“BCB is not accepting his [Shakib] involvement [with Betwinner News] and he is now well informed of it. We believe he as our player will understand the matter. No one wants to get involved in a controversy, so we have made sure Shakib understands our point, we hope he will soon solve it.”

Related to this issue is BCB’s dilemma in naming the T20I captain.

The board was almost on the brink of announcing Shakib the T20I skipper for the upcoming Asia Cup Twenty20 and T20 World Cup 2022.

However, this dispute has forced the board to delay its decision, along with the announcement of the Asia Cup squad.

The Bangladesh Cricket Board on Thursday ordered all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan to cancel an endorsement deal with a betting site or face the axe from the national team. Shakib last week announced a partnership with Betwinner news, a portal operated by the gambling firm based on the Dutch Caribbean island of Curacao. He wrote on his verified social media pages that it was the "one and only source of sports news!" All forms of gambling are illegal in Bangladesh -- although it is rampant during cricket matches when underground punters exploit a brief delay between live play and official broadcasts -- and cricket administrators were quick to seek an explanation from the player.

BCB president Nazmul Hassan said they were expecting a response by Thursday and the issue was non-negotiable. "There is no question of second thoughts," he told reporters. "He has to come out of this, otherwise, he will not be in the squad."

Shakib had been widely expected to take over the Bangladesh Twenty20 side as captain for the upcoming Asia Cup in the UAE and lead the side to the next Twenty20 World Cup in Australia in October-November. But the captaincy was not even a subject for discussion unless he cancelled the Betwinner deal, Nazmul added.

"He won't even be in the team. There is no scope for negotiation. We are clear about this," he said.

The announcement of the Asia Cup squad has been delayed for a day pending Shakib's decision, he added. The International Cricket Council banned the all-rounder for two years -- one of them suspended -- in 2019 after he failed to record corrupt approaches.

Bangladesh reappointed Shakib as Test captain in June following the resignation of Mominul Haque.

Well done, BCB.

No Bangladeshi player should be involved with any form of betting organization. They should be firm about it.

Leading from the front in his 100th T20I - 1/13 in 4 overs

Shaking the bowler was brilliant,if he batted also brilliantly the match could have been ours.

Star Bangladesh all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan reached the milestone of 100th T20I matches on Tuesday. He accomplished the feat during his side's Group B Asia Cup 2022 match against Afghanistan in Sharjah. Shakib did not have an impressive 100th T20I match as, despite a good start, he failed to stay on the crease for long. He was dismissed for 11 off 9 balls after pacer Mujeeb Ur Rahman dislodged his stumps. In 100 matches now, Hasan has scored 2,018 runs at an average of 22.67. He has scored ten half-centuries in the shortest format, with 84 being his best score.

Besides this, he has also delivered for his side with the ball. He has 122 wickets in 100 games and is the leading wicket-taker in the format's history. These 122 scalps have come at an average of 19.89 and an economy rate of 6.65. His best bowling figures are 5/20

70 off 44 today for Shakib. Much of Bangladesh's WC campaign depends on his form

Back to back fifties for the captain, ends with 68 off 42. Leading from the front, can he inspire a turnaround

Shakib Al Hasan, Al Awesome cricketer. Only true class player in Bangladesh cricket. Excellent knock and back to back 50s in T20i.

Absolute pathetic bowling by BD first 6. Just lollies really. Pak openers not needed to do anything extra just placed it

Shakib being the captain helps as he is more sensible and takes responsibility.

No captain or nothing will help BD as its a rubbish cricket team. Its a harsh reality mate. Playing for so many years, had such good economy but still bowls & bats like associate nations. Awful team.

5-36 off his 10 overs in the ODI against India, excellent figures for Shakib.

Bangladesh ODI and Test captain Shakib Al Hasan lost his cool during Match 3 of the Bangladesh Premier League (BPL) between Fortune Barishal and Khulna Tigers at the Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Dhaka.

In the 16th over, controversy erupted after the umpire didn’t signal a wide off fast bowler Rejaur Rahman Raja, who won the Player of the Match award against the Chattogram Challengers.

Raja bowled a slower bouncer and Shakib clearly reckoned that the ball had gone over his head. However, the umpire thought otherwise and called it a legitimate delivery.

Thereafter, the Magura-born Shakib charged aggressively towards the umpire and showed dissent. He yelled at the umpire and got involved in a heated argument. In the end, opposition keeper Mushfiqur Rahim had to intervene and restore sanity to proceedings.

Bangladesh Premier League governing council chairman Sheikh Sohel has welcomed Shakib al Hasan if he were to become the Chief Executive Officer of BPL next year, and replied to Shakib's outburst on the overall situation of the country's premier Twenty20 competition.

Bangladesh Test and T20 captain Shakib took a swipe couple of days ago at the falling standards of the BPL over the years, and highlighted the Bangladesh Cricket Board's failure to develop it as a tournament, one that can compete with other leagues around the world.

Shakib also said to the media that he will drastically change the face of the tournament if given the responsibility.

Following up on Shakib's criticism, Sohel invited the ace all-rounder for the vacant position if he wants to work and improve the BPL.

“First, I would like to thank Shakib. Welcome. He wants to be the CEO of BPL. He expressed interest by himself. On behalf of the governing body I invite him (Shakib) to join us. If he wants, he can be the CEO in the coming year,” said Sohel.

“We thank him, he wants to be the CEO. He can join us on board in the next edition, and help us.

“Of course we welcome him. We are welcoming him now. He is currently playing. You have to treat him as a player. He cannot join us as a player now, he can come next year.”

The BPL regulatory body arranged a press meet Friday during the break between first and second match, and answered various questions regarding the tournament and comments made by Shakib and Mashrafe bin Mortaza, alongside local coach Mohammad Salahuddin, on the overall standard.

Bangladesh Cricket Board had previously taken action on a number of occasions against contracted players of the board for criticizing the BPL.

But this time after getting to know Shakib's perspective where he even said Dhaka Premier League is better than BPL, the board seems defensive and not likely to take any disciplinary measure against the Test and T20 captain.

BPL GC member secretary Ismail Haider Mallick and BCB CEO Nizamuddin Chowdhury informed that this is not the right time to make a comment, and said they want to run the tournament efficiently instead of taking action against Shakib.

“I see Shakib miss many Premier Division matches. But he never misses out on any BPL game. What if I ask him in return, why he missed many Premier Division matches? He's saying BPL is inferior to the Premier Division. But he never sits out a BPL game, it is in the Premier Division where he misses many matches. Actually this is not an argument. He (Shakib) is one of us,” said Mallick to the media.

“The more we talk about it (BPL), more publicity will be there. Let's say he didn't talk about all these things in the BPL, there would have been a lot less publicity. It's good, any positive or negative discussion is encouraged,” Mallick added.

The starting time of the matches created confusion among fans and all the concerned parties as BCB informed officially at 12:30pm.

Just two hours before the match, that the first game will begin at 2pm instead of 2:30pm.

Mallick said it was a miscommunication from their end and claimed that they posted it on BCB's official website and social media handles before the game.

But when it was checked on the website, there was no official announcement on timing change and on social media there was no official announcement separately either.

How he is allowed to get away with this speaks volumes about BD cricket, am afraid

Yeah it was a wide but Shakib needs to calm down. Always seem to have some disciplinary issue. He's acting like it's the WC final. It's a BPL group game and he's such a big star esp in Bangladesh he needs to set a better example to the kids

No censure or fine by BPL for this behaviour - what is happening?

He’s a good dependable all round cricketer but not a dangerous match winner.

Except for his credentials as a cricketer, he’s terribly failed to be a good role model for Bangladesh. The way their young cricketers continue to misbehave in his presence is a blot on his leadership and that of his chhotu wicket keeping compatriot.

Shakib involved with another umpire spat:

Anamul Haque Bijoy and Chaturanga De Silva opened the innings for Barishal, but the confusion remained around who will take the strike.

Left-handed De Silva was ready to take the strike as Rangpur had left-arm spinner Rakibul Hasan to begin the proceedings. However, Rangpur brought Mahedi Hasan seeing a left-hander take the strike. To get the match-up in their favour, Barishal openers exchanged positions. Anamul Haque Bijoy took the strike.

Rangpur were desperate to have a positive match-up and again gave the ball to Rakibul.

Barishal skipper Shakib was initially seen signaling his batters from the boundary ropes initially. However, he rushed on the field as he wanted Anamul Haque Bijoy to take the strike but the umpire didn’t allow that. He was seen having an animated chat on the field with both umpires as confusion clouded the situation.

The plaudits keep coming for the No.1 ranked all-rounder in white-ball cricket Shakib Al Hasan, who on Monday became the first Bangladesh player to pick up 300 ODI wickets for their country.

Shakib registered the milestone during his Player of the Match performance for Bangladesh in their 50-run victory over England in Chattogram, with the left-armer contributing strongly with both bat and ball.

The 35-year-old top-scored for Bangladesh with a stylish 75, before returning to the crease to collect impressive figures of 4/35 from 10 overs to once again bowl his side to victory.

Shakib's final victim was England teenage debutant Rehan Ahmed and it ensured the experienced left-armer became just the 14th player in the history of Men's ODI cricket to have picked up 300 wickets in 50-over cricket.

MOST WICKETS IN MEN'S ODI CRICKET

Muttiah Muralitharan (Sri Lanka) 534
Wasim Akram (Pakistan) 502
Waqar Younis (Pakistan) 416
Chaminda Vaas (Sri Lanka) 400
Shahid Afridi (Pakistan) 395
Shaun Pollock (South Africa) 393
Glenn McGrath (Australia) 381
Brett Lee (Australia) 380
Lasith Malinga (Sri Lanka) 338
Anil Kumble (India) 337
Sanath Jayasuriya (Sri Lanka) 323
Javagal Srinath (India) 315
Daniel Vettori (New Zealand) 305
Shakib Al Hasan (Bangladesh) 300
Shane Warne (Australia) 293

And while Bangladesh lost three-match ODI series to England 2-1, the Asian country have already picked up enough points during the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Super League to ensure they will feature at the 50-over showcase that is scheduled to be held in India later this year.

The victory saw Bangladesh leapfrog Pakistan and rise to fourth on the current Super League standings, with the top eight teams at the completion of the Super League qualifying directly for the Cricket World Cup at the end of the year.

England sit on top of the standings and are well placed to defend the title they won at the last World Cup in 2019, while New Zealand, India, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Australia and Afghanistan have also booked their place at the event.

Just who joins those seven sides and claims the eighth and final spot from the Super League remains to be seen, with a total of four teams still in contention to qualify directly.

West Indies currently occupy eighth place with 88 Super League points, but the Caribbean side have played all 24 of their matches and would need a miracle to hang on.

Ninth-placed South Africa (78 points), 10th-placed Sri Lanka (77) and 11th-placed Ireland (68) are all snapping at their heels and have matches in hand to try and catapult past the West Indies into the final automatic qualifying spot.

South Africa still have a two matches of a crucial home series against the Netherlands to play, while Sri Lanka are in New Zealand this month for a three-game ODI series against the Black Caps.

Ireland's faint hopes of qualifying automatically will rest on a rescheduled series against Bangladesh later in the year.

Shakib Al Hasan becomes the quickest to reach the double of 7000 runs and 300 wickets in ODIs

Only 2 players in the history of the game has done it before (Shahid Afridi and Sanath Jayasuriya) and Shakib becomes only the third. He took 228 matches to reach this prestigious record for an all rounder. Afridi took 341 matches .
Congratulations Shakib Al Hasan.

It took 395 matches for Sanath Jayasuriya to reach this double. So ,quiet a significant difference between these 3 all rounders to reach this feat.

Bangladesh should play more ODIs. Their strongest format. It is pity that Shakib has just played 228 matches after 15- 16 years of international cricket.

Shakib surpasses Southee to become the top T20I wicket-taker

During his match-winning 5/22 in the second T20I against Ireland at Chattogram, Shakib Al Hasan went past New Zealand’s Tim Southee to become the bowler with the most T20I wickets.

Shakib reached this landmark after trapping George Dockrell leg-before off the third ball of the sixth over. When he castled Harry Tector three balls later, Shakib reached his second career five-for in this format.

He has 136 wickets in T20I cricket at an average of 20.67 with an economy rate of 6.8. Besides, he also has 2339 runs at a strike-rate of 122.33.

The Bangladesh star made his T20I debut all the way back in 2006 against Zimbabwe, and has gone on to play 114 T20Is. He has featured in all seven editions of ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.

Courtesy his unbeaten 38 and 5/22, Bangladesh won the game by 77 runs. Shakib was declared Player of the Match for his efforts.

Injury forces Bangladesh all-rounder to be sidelined

Bangladesh have suffered a massive blow with news that experienced all-rounder Shakib Al Hasan has a finger injury and will be on the sidelines for up to six weeks.

Shakib hurt his right finger when fielding during the second ODI against Ireland on Friday and has subsequently been ruled out of making an appearance in the series finale in Chelmsford on Sunday.

The 36-year-old will also face a race against the clock to prove his fitness in time for Bangladesh's one-off Test against Afghanistan next month, with team physio Bayjedul Islam Khan revealing an expected recovery time of six weeks from the injury.

"Shakib hurt the tip of his right index finger while attempting a catch yesterday in the second ODI," Bayjedul said.

"An X-ray today confirmed a fracture on the base of the index finger. Such injuries usually take around six weeks to heal. Unfortunately, this means he is not available for the last match against Ireland."

Bangladesh currently lead the ICC Men's Cricket World Cup Super League series against Ireland 1-0 and can finish as high as second on the standings with a comprehensive victory in the final match.

BANGLADESH Cricket Board president Nazmul Hassan is currently checking Shakib al Hasan’s availability prior to selecting him as the replacement for Tamim Iqbal as the next ODI captain of the national side.

With just over two months left for the 2023 Men’s ODI World Cup, veteran left-handed opener Tamim Iqbal has decided to step down as Bangladesh’s ODI captain and will miss the upcoming Asia Cup due to a back injury.

Tamim had earlier announced his retirement from international cricket on July 6 but reversed the decision following a meeting with Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina. His recent decision means that Bangladesh will have a new ODI captain ahead of the mega event happening in India from October 5 to November 19.

Though Tamim will be unavailable for the Asia Cup to be hosted by Pakistan and Sri Lanka from August 31 to September 17, he wishes to be fit for the ODI series against New Zealand at home starting from September 21 before the World Cup arrives.

BCB Want Shakib Al Hasan As ODI Skipper

Shakib al Hasan is currently the T20I and Test skipper of Bangladesh and has also led the team previously in the 50-over format of the game including the 2011 ODI World Cup.

BCB is banking on Shakib’s experience to lead the side in the upcoming major tournament. However, BCB officials insisted that they will appoint their next ODI skipper for two years which is the only hurdle in the decision.

“We have not discussed captaincy yet. We have to take a break and think about it. As I have said before, if it was one series, we could have gone with the vice-captain (Litton) but now we have to think long term,” Nazmul told reporters in Dhaka on Saturday (August 5).

“There are two problems. If we think about the long term it is one thing. But there is the World Cup as well and the pressure of the World Cup is not small. If I select a new guy and whether he can take this pressure – we need to consider that as well. If we choose someone on a long term basis and he is not available after one year, what will we do? So we need to discuss these things,” he said.

“Shakib is the obvious choice but can you say he will play for two years? We don’t know that and so we need to know his plan and talk with the board. I think the easiest choice is Shakib and there is no problem with it”

“Leading in the bilateral series and World Cup are two different things. And whether that influences his (Litton) batting or not, we need to see everything. We will take a decision without hurrying it up,” he added.
