Big hopes from him, especially as SA head towards the T20 World Cup

1st T20 vs Ireland :

Opener Hendricks became only the sixth player to record four successive 50 plus scores at this level when he top-scored with 74 off 53 balls (10 fours, 1 six)

A career that promised so much has delivered so little. I remember him from 2008 U19 WC and he along with Parnell were the big hopes of Saffer cricket and neither went on to become anything of significance.

South Africa opener Reeza Hendricks continued his scintillating run of form on Wednesday when he became just the sixth batter to score four consecutive half-centuries in men's T20I history.

Hendricks scored a superb 74 from just 53 deliveries for the Proteas against Ireland in Bristol as South Africa drew first blood in their two-game T20I series against Andy Balbirnie's side.

It was Hendricks' fourth fifty on the trot, with the 32-year-old joining greats of the game such as West Indies star Chris Gayle and New Zealand legend Brendon McCullum as batters to have achieved the feat at men's T20I level.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Players to have scored four consecutive T20I half-centuries

Brendon McCullum (New Zealand) 2008, 2009
Chris Gayle (West Indies) 2012
Craig Williams (Namibia) 2021
Rayyankhan Pathan (Canada) 2021
Gustav McKeon (France) 2022
Reeza Hendricks (South Africa) 2022

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hendricks had previously scored 57, 53 and 70 during South Africa's three-match series against England and his knock against Ireland was just as good as his previous innings.

The right-hander hit 10 fours and one massive six and even enjoyed a century partnership with Aiden Markram (56), as South Africa overcame the early loss of Quinton de Kock (7) and Rassie van der Dussen (10) to post an excellent score of 211/5.

Proteas selection chief admits rank stopped Reeza from cracking nod ahead of Bavuma

In the end - perhaps as expected - Reeza Hendricks played no part in the Proteas' failed T20 World Cup campaign because of, essentially, being outranked.

That was the admission made by national selection convener Victor Mpitsang, who noted that the whole saga was highly "unfortunate".

In fact, the issue had dogged South Africa's assault even before the tournament started as captain Temba Bavuma's form never improved, exacerbated by an unfortunate illness picked up in the ODI series against India.

Meanwhile, Hendricks seized his chance earlier in the year to finish with 323 runs in just seven innings at a superb strike rate of 140, which included a Man of the Series award against England, the eventual world champions.

Regardless of the merit of the Proteas' eventual selection strategy, it must be stated that the party line has remained consistent.

"At the end of the day we had the captain that was there and we had to give him the best possible chance [to find form and make an impact]," said Mpitsang.

"It was unfortunate that Reeza didn't play."

As it turned out, Bavuma only played one innings of substance, a beguiling 19-ball 36 against Pakistan.

Mpitsang didn't shy away from noting his contributions with the bat was inadequate, but believes Bavuma added value in other areas.

"Yes, we would have liked Temba to have contributed a little bit more, but the role that he plays on the field is just as big and the role as leader was severe as well," he said.

"So it's unfortunate for Reeza to have missed out, but those were the calls we had to make."

With the Proteas' T20 commitments done for the year, Bavuma's output will read 134 runs in 12 innings at a strike rate of just 95.

Almost took them to a win - out for 83(44) in the 2nd T20I

Excellent player. Crazy how he didn't feature in the T20 WC.

What a knock by Reeza Hendricks against India tonight in the 2nd T20I!

He scored a quickfire 49 runs off just 27 deliveries to give the winning momentum early on.

Reeza Hendricks shows his prowess with a stellar half century off just 39 balls against Karachi Kings, marking his median fifty in the PSL. The last two years in the T20’s from the national side South Africa to in the leagues have belonged to Reeza and what amazing he has all the shots in his menu as it’s about all quality. This batter is in the form and rarely throws it away.He remained unbeaten with 79 runs off 54 balls.

How can a 35 year old be considered a "hope"? I like Reeza and he's been unfairly left out for most of his career but he doesn't have more than 3-4 years left. The word hope should be attached with players like Stubbs (don't like him atm), Brevis, Beddingham etc.

Reeza Hendricks awarded Man of the Match for his blistering knock of 79 runs off 54 deliveries against Karachi Kings.

Today's knock of 72 (47) against Quetta Gladiators keeps him as the leading run-scorer in PSL 9.

Reeza Hendricks gone after a decent knock of 40(27) against LQ. He is still among the top five candidates in race of Hanif Mohammad cap in PSL 9.

Reeza Hendricks tried his best to take Dambulla Sixers over the line but his superb innings of 80 runs off 50 balls doesn't seem to be enough to give his team a win over Jaffna Kings. He hit 9 fours and 3 sixes in his innings.

Some sensational batting from Raza Hendricks keeping South Africa well and truly alive in the chase in the 2nd T20I against Pakistan. Made 58*(33) so far.

He turns it into a century, seems like game over for Pakistan. Made it in 54 balls.
