Death toll rises to 26 in Quetta Railway Station blast, 62 injured

At least 26 people were killed and 62 injured after a suicide blast ripped through a Quetta Railway Station on Saturday, local authorities and hospital officials said.

The incident comes a week after a bomb blast near a girl’s school and a hospital in Balochistan’s Mastung district killed eight people, including five children.

Pakistan, particularly the Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa provinces, has seen a sharp uptick in terrorism-related incidents over the past year.

While speaking to Dawn.com, provincial health department spokesperson Wasim Baig said that the death toll rose to 26 after two people succumbed to their injuries while 62 others were injured in the explosion.

Quetta Division Commissioner Hamza Shafqaat said that the blast was a “suicide attack” primarily on law enforcement agencies, while civilians were also targeted.

Shafqaat added that gatherings have been banned in the area while bus stations were on high alert, adding that railways have been requested to close the station and suspend train services.

Speaking to Geo News, he said that besides civilians, “some law enforcement” personnel were also martyred.

According to Reuters, Balochistan Inspector General of Police (IG) Moazzam Jah Ansari said, “The target was army personnel from the Infantry School.”

While Baig did not confirm details about personnel to Dawn.com, AFP quoted him as saying: “Fourteen members of the army and 12 civilians were killed.”

Baig, according to AFP, said 46 members of the security forces and 14 civilians were wounded.

According to a list of injured people shifted to Quetta Trauma Centre and Emergency Department — issued by Managing Director Dr Arbab Kamran Kasi and available with Dawn.com — 53 people aged between 20 and 50 years were wounded.

Six of them were stated to be in a serious condition whereas three had been shifted to an intensive care unit.

The banned militant group Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA) has claimed responsibility for the blast.

Pakistan Railways had previously announced the restoration of train services between Quetta and Peshawar from Oct 11, after a suspension of more than a month and a half.

Train services had been suspended across the country on August 26 after a key railway bridge between Kolpur and Mach was destroyed in a blast carried out by BLA as part of province-wide coordinated attacks.

Appeal for blood

Speaking to Geo News, Shafqaat said the blast occurred at approximately 8:25am, adding that the body of the suicide bomber had also been identified.

He appealed to the public to donate blood for the wounded, stressing there was a need for it.

The commissioner also urged the public not to head to the railway station, Quetta Trauma Centre or the Civil Hospital, noting that “in such incidents, there is a risk of twin attacks”.

“Right now, we have cordoned off the city and are conducting snap-checking. […] Gatherings have been banned,” Shafqaat said.

Asked if the blast specifically targeted someone, the commissioner said terrorist organisations “attacked soft targets on purpose out of frustration”.

Emergency imposed in hospitals

Balochistan Heath Minister Bakht Muhammad Kakar was present at the Quetta Trauma Centre to oversee the treatment of the injured, a statement by his office said.

It added that an emergency had been imposed in the Civil Hospital and the Trauma Centre, with more doctors summoned on duty.

Earlier, Quetta Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Operations Mohammad Baloch told reporters that “around 100 people” were present at the site, according to footage seen by him.

He added that at the time of the blast, a Jaffar Express train was reportedly ready to depart from the platform for Peshawar.

Police and security forces had reached the site of the incident, according to a statement by Balochistan government spokesperson Shahid Rind. He said the Bomb Disposal Squad was collecting evidence from the site and a report had been sought on the incident.

‘Continuation of targeting innocent people’

Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti condemned the incident, saying it was a “continuation of targeting innocent people”.

In a statement, CM Bugti said, “The terrorists’ target now are innocent people, labourers, children and women. Those targeting innocent people do not deserve mercy.”

According to the statement, the chief minister has ordered an investigation into the blast and contacted top officials in Balochistan.

CM Bugti further said: “Terrorists are not eligible to be called humans. They have fallen from humanity; they are worse than animals.”

Stating that “elements involved in various terrorist incidents” in the past have been traced, he vowed that the perpetrators behind the railway blast would be caught as well.

CM Bugti reiterated the government’s resolve to continue operations against terrorists and pursue them. “We will root out terrorism from Balochistan,” he asserted.

Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif strongly condemned the blast, praying for the deceased and the speedy recovery of the injured.

He also sought an investigation report from the Balochistan government on the incident, the premier’s statement added.

“Terrorists who harm the lives and property of innocent people will have to pay a heavy price,” Radio Pakistan quoted PM Shehbaz as saying.

Acting President Yusuf Raza Gilani also condemned the incident, expressing his grief over the loss of precious lives, Radio Pakistan reported.

Gilani said terrorists were enemies of humanity who target innocent people.

Both Shehbaz and Gilani reiterated Pakistan’s commitment to eradicate the menace of terrorism.

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi, in a telephonic conversation with CM Bugti, condemned the blast, expressing heartfelt sympathy and condolences to the families of the deceased.

In a post on X, the ministry said that Naqvi expressed complete solidarity with the families of the affectees.

The pair agreed to take joint and effective measures immediately against the anti-state activities in the province.

“Will go to the last extent to establish peace in Balochistan […] The federation will provide all possible support to the Balochistan government in this regard,” the interior minister said.

Sindh Home Minister Ziaul Hasan Linjar, while condemning the attack, assured the Balochistan government of “all possible support and cooperation”.

The police in Sindh were also ordered to remain on high alert in light of the terrorist attack, a statement from the Sindh interior minister’s office said.

Rise in terrorism

In 2023, Pakistan witnessed 1,524 violence-related fatalities and 1,463 injuries from 789 terror attacks and counter-terror operations. Overall fatalities, including those of outlaws, mark a record six-year high.

Terror attacks declined by 24 per cent in September compared to August, but they witnessed surges in August and July, according to monthly security reports.

On September 25, at least two policemen were among a dozen people injured by a bomb attack that targeted a police vehicle in Quetta.

Days later, terrorists armed with automatic weapons stormed an under-construction house in Panjgur, killing seven labourers hailing from Multan.

The next day, armed men attacked the camp of a private construction company in the Musakhel district, torching the machinery and vehicles there. No casualties were reported.

Last month, three security personnel were martyred and four others were injured in a roadside bomb blast in Balochistan’s Kalat area.

British High Commissioner condemns Quetta attack, calls it divisive act

British High Commissioner to Pakistan, Jane Marriott, has condemned the deadly bombing at Quetta Railway Station, stating that such acts serve only to sow division.

Expressing her condolences over the tragic loss of life, Marriott called the attack a "horrific" event that claimed the lives of 25 individuals and left over 50 injured.

"My sympathies are with the families of the victims and the injured," said Marriott, adding that the United Kingdom stands with Pakistan in condemning terrorism. "These actions do nothing but sow the seeds of division," she stressed.

The suicide attack, which occurred at Quetta Railway Station, targeted a crowd of passengers, and also resulted in injuries to two members of the railway police, Head Constables Ghulam Rasool Jamali and Bhoral Khan.

Marriott reaffirmed Britain's support for Pakistan in its ongoing fight against extremism and violence, highlighting the importance of unity and resilience in the face of such challenges.

A terrible loss of lives at the hands of the enemies of PK. As the country faces severe threats from our enemies you would think the ISI and the local Police would be on high alert but they see their job to crush the will of the people. At the same time as this happened our intelligence agencies decided that a better use of their resources would be to arrest PTI workers at a Jalsa. Our interior security has no time for fighting terrorism as he is too busy stealing off the pay farmers.

People of Bharat stand in solidarity with our Pakistan Occupied Kashmiri and Baloch brothers and sisters from the tyranny of the Pakisjabis. The state of Pakistan has failed to provide basic human rights to these resources rich provinces of Pakistan and have only used them for exploiting their resources and to destabilize peace in the region at the behest of their American masters.

Russian President Putin expresses condolence over Quetta attack

Russian President Vladimir Putin on Saturday extended his condolences to President Asif Ali Zardari and Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif following a deadly terrorist attack at Quetta Railway Station.

In his letter, President Putin expressed deep sorrow over the tragic incident, which resulted in numerous casualties, including women and children, and left many others injured. He condemned the “barbaric crime” and called for justice for those responsible.

“We are determined to continue close cooperation with our Pakistani partners against all forms and manifestations of terrorism,” Putin wrote, reaffirming Russia’s commitment to supporting Pakistan in its battle against extremism and violent acts. He added that Russia would assist in bringing the perpetrators of the attack to justice.

Meanwhile, Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim also offered his condolences, expressing grief on behalf of Malaysia over the senseless loss. "On behalf of Malaysia, I extend our deepest condolences to the people of Pakistan, who mourn this senseless and devastating loss,” the Malaysian PM said on X.

Ibrahim also underscored that these acts of violence—targeting both civilians and security forces—highlight the ongoing threat posed by extremism.

“These acts of utter ruthlessness and violence remind us of the relentless threats posed by extremism and ideological rigidity—forces that undermine progress and peace in Muslim societies,” he stated.

The government of Turkey condemned the attack in the strongest terms, extending condolences to the people of Pakistan and wishing a swift recovery to the injured.

"We will continue to support Pakistan in its fight against terrorism," the Turkish Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a letter.

The international community's reaction reflects widespread condemnation of the attack and solidarity with Pakistan as it grapples with the ongoing threat of terrorism.

Because most are pti supporters and they are happy when army is targeted or civilians working for the state apparatus.

Their incarcerated leader many times has called for resistance and most of these ethnofascists terrorists whether baloch or ttp became resurgent under his rule.
Their pti mnas are the direct protectors, police lines attack in Peshawar was caused by their own police officer

When pmln wanted to launch operation they stopped it and army and goevrment had to back down.

If this was any other country The security services would have smashed these terrorists a long time ago and used drones where they are crossing from afghanistan , they are busy sending troops on back of toyota tin cans to be ambushed but won't use cheap fpv drones or lancet type kamikaze drones which are cheap and can even enter straight into a foxhole and end the menace very quickly literally someone sitting 100s of miles away could get kill counts of 100s of ttp and bla.
And end the conflict very quickly because these same terrorists would ask for a ceasefire when a lancet enters the mud brick building window and takes them all out of malalai and chota khan dies in process call it collateral why take the blame if they are using their own women and children as human shields its their fault why should military be responsible for their cowardice and fitna al khwarij and ethnofascism

Oh, of course, most likely all the victims must have been PTI supporters. I mean, it’s not like Hafiz Sahib himself was up there, hands on the wheel, driving that train to tragedy.

If you’re gonna cook up a theory, maybe sprinkle a little realism in there, just a pinch.

And yeah, apparently, 80% of Pakistanis are overjoyed about the attack, if Atta Tarar’s of PP to be believed. Because nothing boosts national morale quite like a fresh disaster. Makes total sense.

So Putin shows more care for people than the Mistry and his puppets. All our govt machinery is geared to fighting the people and none towards our enemies.

The quiet of this thread speaks volumes about how much posters care about their fellow Pakistanis compared to something happening in far off lands of Palestine or in India.
Lol, the thread got shifted to plug in "India" to get more engagement and still, status of cow slaughter in India get's 10X discussions than slaughter of fellow Pakistanis on a Pakistani forum.

Not even the meaningless, but formality of "Rest in Peace" post for the departed souls!

BLA accepted the responsibility and we know who is supporting those terrorists.

BLA took responsibility, that's in news. Rest of your point is all conjecture which even Pakistan news and govts are not claiming. I would love to know your sources.
Anyway, my comment stands as a thread on Balochistan is 2 pages long while random threads about Palestine run into 10s of pages. Canadian Khalistanis have special place for Pakistani posters but have no heart to support or discuss something that is affecting in a state that's literally 45% of Pakistan's landmass.

You might have missed other threads on Balochistan. Thanks

The message is loud and clear, the Chinese and the Pakistan army is out there to exploit Baluchistan’s resources and in return they’re giving them nothing but modern day slavery.

This is unacceptable to the people of Balochistan and they will attack every asset of the CPEC and Pakistan army to make their grievances be heard internationally.

People of Balochistan deserve freedom from this dictatorship and once they have it we are ready to give them a deal. Bharat and Iran will both join hands to give a billion dollar package to Baloch people and it will be backed by Russia and BRICS.

https://ppforum.pakpassion.net/threads/forgotten-balochistan.274036/ here is another thread about balochistan.

no need to prove anything. Terrorists have no religion and country. BLA is a terrorist organization supported by non-state actors. SIMPLE FACT
Kinda proves my point, That thread had been here for 6 years and total length 4 pages.
So we had a new thread on Balochistan with "India" plugged in. Lo behold.. 2 page length in less than a year.
Engagement achieved, but also shows what the true focus of Pakistani posters is. and honestly its sad.

Khalistan has more threads and several times more lengthy discussions on a Pakistani forum than Balochistan where insurgency is actually killing hundreds of Pakistanis on such a frequent basis.

A Sikh Plumber in Canada gets more sympathy from Pakistani posters than their own fellow Pakistanis.

Terror is Terror and is being condemned no matter where it happens.
Have I supported the terror attack? I am just surprised at the complete indifference to what's going on in Balochistan by the people. Atleast drop in the usual "Rest in Peace" for the innocent victims of the attack. But there was just crickets. It just shows what the priorities of people are.

The implied blame on India is on such flimsy grounds that all the posters obsessed with conspiracy theories are not even bothered to engage here and blame India. I would have taken that. But its absolute INDIFFERENCE

The division of Bharat was done in a very pathetic manner by the British resulting in us getting into an endless conflict of communal disharmony.

Our people will have to learn the fundamentals of coexistence in a multireligious society. Sadly even today when i make a hard hitting comment some are quick to resort to blasphemous anti religion comments. Such people will never let us live peacefully.

Interior minister pledges enhanced security in Balochistan after Quetta terror attack

In response to escalating terrorist activity in Balochistan, Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi announced an expansion of intelligence-based operations (IBOs) across the province on Sunday. The statement follows a deadly blast near Quetta Railway Station that claimed 27 lives and injured over 50 people on Saturday.

Chairing a high-level meeting on Balochistan’s security situation, Naqvi pledged the federal government’s full support to the provincial administration. “The federal government will provide all possible support to the Balochistan government to counter the threat of terrorism,” he said, stressing that bolstering the province's security apparatus is a top priority.

He detailed plans to reinforce law enforcement capabilities, including targeted training and professional development for Balochistan’s Police, Counter-Terrorism Department (CTD), Levies, and other security forces.

Paying tribute to the recent blast victims, Naqvi offered condolences to their families, affirming, “This fight against terrorism is a collective responsibility, and victory against our enemies is our only option.”

Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti also spoke, reaffirming the provincial government's commitment to improving law and order. “A small group of elements is responsible for these attacks, and we are determined to eliminate them completely,” he stated.

Senior officials, including Chief Secretary Shakeel Qadir Khan, Additional Chief Secretary Home Shahab Ali Shah, IG Police Moazzam Jah Ansari, and Quetta Division Commissioner Hamza Shafqaat, participated in the meeting to strategise on enhancing security and responding to recent attacks.

Intelligence-based operations to be expanded in Balochistan after Quetta attack

Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi and Balochistan Chief Minister Sarfraz Bugti have decided to expand the intelligence-based operations in the province after the Quetta attack, which killed 27 people and wounded more than 50.

“The federal government will provide all possible support to the Balochistan government to deal with the menace of terrorism,” Naqvi said while presiding over a meeting on the law and order situation in the province.

A powerful explosion rocked the area near the railway station in Quetta on Saturday, resulting in the deaths of 27 individuals and injuring more than 50 others, including both men and women.

Pools of blood and ripped backpacks were seen at the scene, where a large metal sheet protecting passengers from the elements had been blown off.

Initial reports said that the attacker was carrying seven to eight kilogrammes of explosives strapped to his body.

It was decided that “decisive steps” would be taken with full force to crush the terrorists. Officials presented a preliminary report of the suicide blast at the Quetta Railway Station in the meeting.

Naqvi announced his decision to provide resources to Balochistan on a “priority basis.” Measures would be taken to provide training and strengthen the professional capabilities of police, the Counter Terrorism Department, Levies and other forces of Balochistan to deal with the menace of terrorism, he added.

Balochistan CM Bugti stated that the professional capabilities of Levies, Police and CTD would be strengthened and developed on “modern lines” with the support of the federal government.

He expressed the government’s resolve to defeat enemies who want to weaken Pakistan by furthering their “nefarious designs.”

Bugti vowed to root out the menace of terrorism and ensure peace in the province.

Indian hand in this suicide bombing.. that much is apparent… reading the disgusting the comments on here they seem to be relishing every innocent Muslim death with gusto.

To the innocents who have unjustly paid the ultimate price, Rest in peace and condolences to their families and loved ones.

May those to planned and undertook this despicable deed suffer unjust torment here and in the hereafter.

Even on PP, some of these Indians were rooting for Israeli airstrikes on innocent Palestinian women and children.

These people are sick in the heads.

May peace return to Balochistan and terrorists become neutralized.

Two ‘suicide bombers arrested’ in Balochistan

Sources report that two suicide bombers have been apprehended during targeted operations across various areas of Balochistan. The arrested terrorists were reportedly planning attacks on security forces and foreign nationals in Karachi.

The mastermind behind a planned suicide attack on Chinese engineers near Karachi Airport’s signal has also been detained in Windar. Additionally, four other terrorists were arrested from various locations during intelligence-based operations (IBOs).

On Saturday, Quetta railway station’s platform resulted in the killing of at least 26 persons and more than 40 were injured, including women and children.

Commissioner Quetta Hamza Shafqaat giving accounts of the deadly railway station bombing in Quetta said that the blast took place at 8:25am leaving 26 dead and more than 40 injured.

The blast took place at the time of the departure of Jaffar Express, when a large number of passengers were present at the railway station, police said.

The railway authorities said that two trains, Chaman Passenger and Jaffar Express, were scheduled to depart from Quetta to Chaman and Peshawar, respectively. The passengers of both trains were present at the platform when the blast occurred.

India is probably behind it and the evidence may emerge soon for it. Looks like an attempt to foil CT organization and further destabilizing Balochistan

Internet services suspended in parts of Balochistan amid security concerns

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) announced on Friday that mobile internet services have been temporarily suspended in certain areas of Balochistan, citing public safety concerns amidst a recent surge in terrorist attacks.

The PTA statement explained that the decision followed directives from relevant authorities and was implemented to "ensure public safety given the security situation in these areas."

The temporary suspension comes as Pakistan grapples with an uptick in violent incidents, particularly affecting Balochistan and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa provinces. The PTA has yet to provide a timeline for the restoration of internet services in the affected areas.

The security landscape in Balochistan has worsened in recent months.

Four terrorists shot dead in Balochistan operations

“An intelligence based operation was conducted in Awaran District on reported presence of terrorists. Security forces of Pakistan, in step with the nation, remain determined to thwart attempts at sabotaging peace, stability and progress of Balochistan.

Earlier, security forces killed three khwarij terrorists in an Intelligence based operation (IBO) in Bannu district.

“In the early hours of Friday, Security Forces conducted an intelligence based operation in Bannu District on reported presence of khwarij,” said an Inter Services Public Relations (ISPR) news release.

During conduct of the operation, own troops effectively engaged khwarij location, as a result of which, three khwarij were sent to hell while two khwarij got injured, it said.
