The Cricket West Indies (CWI) Senior Men’s Selection Panel today announced the 15-member squad to travel to Australia to play a two-Test series as part of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) from 17 to 29 January 2024.

The West Indies will again be led by Captain Kraigg Brathwaite, with fast bowler Alzarri Joseph named as the new Vice Captain. The squad will arrive in Australia on 30 December and will hold a preparation camp from 2 – 9 January in Adelaide, followed by a Four (4) Day First Class warm-up match against a Cricket Australia XI at the Karen Rolton Oval (KRO) in Adelaide from 10 – 13 January.

The selectors have named several uncapped players in the squad. These are: batter Zachary McCaskie, wicket-keeper Tevin Imlach; allrounders Justin Greaves, Kavem Hodge and Kevin Sinclair, as well as fast bowlers Akeem Jordan and Shamar Joseph.

Speaking about the make-up of the squad, CWI Lead Selector, The Most Honourable Dr. Desmond Haynes said: “The squad has been affected by the unavailability of some key players. However, we have had a very strong red-ball program being run over the past year, which has unearthed significant talent throughout the region. The selected players have passed each test given to them and must now be given the opportunity to showcase their skills in the test arena. Australia away is always a challenge, but we are confident in our team.”

The two teams will again compete for the Frank Worrell Trophy – named in honor of the legendary West Indies allrounder and captain. The first Test will be a red ball fixture at the Adelaide Oval from 17 to 21 January, and the second, a pink ball Day/Night contest at the Gabba in Brisbane from 25 to 29 January.

This is West Indies second Test Series out of a total of six to play in the new 2023-2025 ICC WTC cycle. The Test Series against Australia will be the first of three away series that West Indies will play in the WTC. West Indies drew one Test match and lost one against India in August.

Following the Test Series, West Indies will face Australia in three One-Day International and three T20 Internationals, and these squads will be announced at a later date.

FULL SQUAD

NOTES: Jayden Seales is unavailable for selection due to a shoulder injury. Jason Holder and Kyle Mayers are unavailable as they have expressed a preference to explore T20 Franchise opportunities in January.

Match Schedule (start times in brackets)
17-21 January: 1st Test at Adelaide Oval, Adelaide
(Start Time: 15-20 January 7:30pm Eastern Caribbean/6:30pm Jamaica)

25-29 January: 2nd Test at the Gabba, Brisbane
(Start Time: 12 midnight Eastern Caribbean (24-28 January 11pm Jamaica)

WI selectors are known for springing surprises but this is next level. I know the cupboard is bare but you could confuse this for a WI A squad.

The batting basically ends at 3. I hope AUS rest their senior players otherwise this could be an even biggest mismatch than the PAK series.

CA XI squad to play West Indies

The National Selection Panel (NSP) has named the below 12-player squad for the men’s Cricket Australia XI match against the West Indies at Karen Rolton Oval in Adelaide.

The three-day tour match will be played from Wednesday 10 January to Friday 12 January ahead of the NRMA Insurance Test Series between Australia and the West Indies.

NSP Chair of Selectors George Bailey said:

“CA XI matches provide an excellent opportunity for some of our up-and-coming players on the domestic scene to face international opposition as well as rewarding consistent performers.

“The mix of the squad combines players who are well established at First Class level with those who are also just starting out at the level. The squad selected consists of players currently not playing in the Big Bash League.

“It’s an exciting opportunity for recent Sheffield Shield debutants like Liam Haskett, Jack Nisbet and Doug Warren to play alongside and learn from established domestic cricketers and against a touring international side.

“Peter Handscomb will captain the CA XI and will have strong support from other proven leaders within the squad.”

The Windies will have a new-look squad, including seven uncapped players, for its upcoming two-Test series against Australia

West Indies begin their second men's Test tour to Australia in barely a year hopeful that a new coach and a slew of fresh faces will also deliver them a change in fortunes.

Having slipped quietly into Adelaide late last month and acclimatising with a series of training sessions at Karen Rolton Oval over the ensuing 10 days, Kraigg Brathwaite's team finalise their Test preparation with a three-day game against a young Cricket Australia XI starting tomorrow.

While the tour match is not an official first-class fixture which means both teams can rotate more than 11 players through their line-ups, it will provide vital experience for a visiting outfit that bears little resemblance to the squad that played two Tests here at the end of 2022.

Skipper Brathwaite is one of only five members of the 15-player group returning to Australia, along with veteran quick Kemar Roach, fellow fast bowler (now vice-captain) Alzarri Joseph, keeper Joshua DaSilva and opener Tagenarine Chanderpaul who impressed in his maiden series last year.

Seven of the 15 are as-yet uncapped at Test level – batter Zachary McCaskie (Barbados), keeper Tevin Imlach (Guyana), allrounders Justin Greaves (Barbados), Kavem Hodge (Dominica) and Kevin Sinclair (Guyana), plus pace bowlers Akeem Jordan (Barbados) and Shamar Joseph (Guyana).

West Indies name new-look Test squad for Australia tour
The most notable absentees from last year are former skipper Jason Holder and explosive allrounder Kyle Mayers who opted to pursue T20 franchise opportunities elsewhere during January, and exciting quick Jayden Seales who is suffering from a shoulder injury.

Also missing from last year's touring party that suffered heavy losses in Perth and Adelaide are then-vice captain Jermaine Blackwood, Nkrumah Bonner, Shamarh Brooks, Roston Chase, Anderson Phillip, Raymon Reifer and Devon Thomas.

Former Jamaica wicketkeeper Andre Coley has taken over as coach after Phil Simmons' tenure ended after the previous Australia campaign, and he believes the inclusion of untried talent coupled with the challenge posed by the world's top-ranked Test outfit on their home turf can bring the best out of his unheralded squad.

"At the moment we have a number of white-ball franchise tournaments that are happening at around the same time, we have a couple of injuries as well so when you put all of that together it will have impacted some of the selection," Coley told cricket.com.au today.

West Indies squad: Kraigg Brathwaite (c), Alzarri Joseph (vc), Alick Athanaze, Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Joshua DaSilva, Justin Greaves, Kavem Hodge, Tevin Imlach, Akeem Jordan, Shamar Joseph, Zachary McCaskie, Kirk McKenzie, Gudakesh Motie, Kemar Roach, Kevin Sinclair

CA XI squad: Peter Handscomb (c), Jack Clayton, Harry Conway, Jake Doran, Jayden Goodwin, Liam Haskett, Bradley Hope, Jack Nisbet, Liam Scott, Tim Ward, Doug Warren, Teague Wyllie

"But with that said, it does not take away from the fact the players who are here on tour actually merit their selection.

"So it's an opportunity for the players that are here to express themselves and play against a team who won the last (World) Test Championship.

"It's a wonderful opportunity for everyone."

Australia to weigh up making Smith Test opener: McDonald
West Indies last Test victory in Australia came at the WACA Ground in Perth 27 years ago, and their most recent win away from home came against Bangladesh at Dhaka in February, 2021.

Coley said the absence of formal first-class status for this tour game gives him a chance to have a look at how all members of the West Indies squad acquit themselves in Australia conditions, and also allows them to better manage fast-bowler workloads.

Those quicks will glean insights about local conditions from former Australia firebrand Shaun Tait who is serving as an assistant coach during this tour.

Of further benefit will be the use of Karen Rolton Oval's drop-in pitch for the three-day match, which is expected to prove near identical in composition and character to the surface at Adelaide Oval for the first NRMA Insurance Test starting January 17 given it has been prepared by the same ground staff.

But Griffith, the current Victoria bowling coach who has also undertaken coaching stints in the IPL, noted his line-up that includes aspiring Australia batters the likes of Tim Ward and Teague Wyllie as well as rookie pace bowlers Jack Nisbet and Liam Haskett won't be pulling any punches.

"We can manipulate things a little bit if we need to, but we'll be trying to play the game as well as we can to what we would do if it was a first-class game," Griffith said.

"You want to give them (West Indies) an opportunity to prepare as best they can because we want a really good Test series.

"So you want them to be in good form and playing well to challenge Australia.

"But that being said, we're not going to lie down and give them an easy run, we'll be competing.

"These guys (CA XI) aren't going to just roll out there and take it easy, they want to show what they can do as well."

Aaron Hardie, Matt Short, Jhye Richardson, and Nathan Ellis return to the squad. Lance Morris has been included in his first ODI squad.

NSP men’s Chair of Selectors George Bailey said: “It is a little over 12 months until the Champions Trophy and further opportunities for the likes of Aaron Hardie, Matt Short, Jhye Richardson, and Nathan Ellis will be valuable both to our ongoing improvement as a team and also further their personal experiences in ODI cricket.

“The squad strikes a balance between players continuing to make their mark on international cricket, playing alongside some of our most experienced players with an eye to the future in this format.”

The West Indies have named 15-man squads to play against Australia in three ODIs and three T20Is from 2 to 13 February.

The ODI squad features two potential debutants, 2022 U19 World Cup graduate Teddy Bishop and wicketkeeper-batter Tevin Imlach.

Bishop earned his call-up following a strong campaign in the West Indies 50-over competition while Imlach will remain in Australia after the Test series. The series also sees a return for Justin Greaves from injury, having also averaged 80 in the Super 50. Hayden Walsh Jr and Kavem Hodge also return. Brandon King and Sherfane Rutherford were unavailable for selection, while Shimron Hetmyer and Yannic Carriah were left out.

West Indies have enjoyed a form uptick, winning both the T20I and ODI home series against England in December.

Lead selector and former international Desmond Haynes has urged the side to continue in Australia, building on their momentum and preparing for a home stand at the T20 World Cup in June.

“On the back of a series win against England, we are expecting our ODI team to be very competitive in Australia," Haynes began.

"We have some new inclusions, who have impressed over a significant period and a couple of returning players, who we think will have an impact. For the T20I series, this forms part of our crucial preparations for the upcoming T20 World Cup where we are hosts.

"We are hoping to build on strong overall performances against India and England and to keep improving as we approach the major tournament.”

Before the two white ball series the teams meet in two Test matches as part of the World Test Championship from 17 January.

ODI squad: Shai Hope (Captain), Alzarri Joseph, Alick Athanaze, Teddy Bishop, Keacy Carty, Roston Chase, Matthew Forde, Justin Greaves, Kavem Hodge, Tevin Imlach, Gudakesh Motie, Kjorn Ottley, Romario Shepherd, Oshane Thomas, Hayden Walsh Jr.

T20I squad: Rovman Powell (Captain), Shai Hope, Johnson Charles, Roston Chase, Jason Holder, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Brandon King, Kyle Mayers, Gudakesh Motie, Nicholas Pooran, Andre Russell, Sherfane Rutherford, Romario Shepherd, Oshane Thomas

At stumps on Day 2:

A 78-run partnership from Da Silva (55* from 95) and Kavem Hodge (44* from 67) puts West Indians in the driving seat as they lead by 214 runs going into Day 3.

West Indies will be missing Jayden Seales here. He was brilliant and could have done some damage on these supportive wickets. His height and extra bounce would have troubled the batter for sure.

Windies legend Brian Lara is on hand to share some valuable knowledge with the young touring group

While most of the revamped West Indies men's Test squad remain largely unknown to their Australia rivals and local fans, one formidably familiar face might yet have a significant influence on the upcoming two-Test NRMA Insurance Series.

Brian Lara, perhaps the greatest all-format batter of modern times, was part of the West Indies first hit out at Adelaide Oval today ahead of the first Test for the Frank Worrell Trophy starting on Wednesday.

Lara will spend the Test matches in Adelaide and Brisbane behind the commentary microphone for Fox Cricket, but away from those responsibilities he has made himself available to work with the inexperienced West Indies squad as a mentor.

New-look Windies hoping for fresh fortunes
It is a similar role to that performed by Lara's former Test captaincy rival Steve Waugh during Australia's 2019 Ashes campaign, and offers an important boost for the visitors who have seven uncapped players in their 15-man squad.

At least three of those rookies – top-order batter Kavem Hodge, seam-bowling all-rounder Justin Greaves and raw fast bowler Shamar Joseph – are expected to earn their first Test caps at Adelaide Oval this week.

Possible West Indies XI: Kraigg Brathwaite (c), Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Kirk McKenzie, Alick Athanaze, Kavem Hodge, Justin Greaves, Joshua Da Silva (wk), Alzarri Joseph, Gudakesh Motie, Kemar Roach, Shamar Joseph

But after two hefty losses last summer stretched their winless streak in Australia to 16 Tests dating back to 2000-01, the new-look West Indies are hellbent on exploring every available avenue to restore lost pride.

"The knowledge he has is second to none," current keeper-batter Joshua Da Silva said today of fellow Trinidadian Lara who holds the records for highest-ever individual Test (400no) and first-class (501no) scores.

'What he's done for the game, what he's done for West Indies cricket on his own … so just to have him around, just his presence alone speaks for itself.

"He's worked with everyone (in the current squad), he's our mentor so he's going to be helping everybody, bowlers and batters.

"He has so much experience I think everybody can learn from him."

In addition to the three likely debutants who impressed during last week's three-day tour game against a Cricket Australia XI, West Indies are expected to field another trio who have yet to play international cricket on Australia pitches.

The quick from nowhere revives memories of Windies greats
Number three batter Kirk McKenzie's sole Test to date came against India in Trinidad last year, likely number four Alick Athanaze played his only two Tests in the same series, while left-arm spinner Gudakesh Motie's four games came at home, in Zimbabwe and South Africa.

It means the only members of the visitors' expected starting XI to claim Test experience in Australia are Da Silva, skipper Kraigg Braithwaite and his opening partner from last summer Tagenarine Chanderpaul, and experienced seamers Kemar Roach and Alzarri Joseph.

The unfamiliarity of the touring party, led by coach Andre Coley who has visited Australia previously with junior development teams but never represented West Indies, means newly installed Australia opener Steve Smith will need to undertake detailed research on his likely new-ball foes.

"I haven't done my homework on them yet, but I will over the next couple of days," Smith said today.

"It will probably just mean a few more hours on the iPad looking at some footage, but outside of that just go about my business as usual in the nets and get myself in the routine and hopefully have some runs in me this week.

"I'm hearing there's some good stuff (about West Indies) so looking forward to the challenge."

Da Silva, who requires just two dismissals to reach 100 in Test cricket having debuted against New Zealand three years ago, echoed his captain Brathwaite in noting the upcoming series represents a chance for the West Indies to rebuild their fading Test reputation.

Perfect prep the first step in restoring Windies' pride
The collection of Caribbean nations that remarkably went undefeated in any Test series from 1980-1995 has recorded just one series win away from home in the past five years – a two-nil triumph over Bangladesh in early 2021.

And despite the absence of key players Jason Holder and Kyle Mayers who have opted to focus on white-ball cricket ahead of next year's T20 World Cup in the Caribbean and USA, as well as injured fast bowler Jayden Seales, Da Silva claims the mood in the untried group is buoyant.

"Each and every one of us here is looking forward to making the West Indies a winning team again, that's the main goal we have," he said as the West Indies stepped up preparation for the opening Test in Adelaide.

"We talk about it every day, about getting back to those days.

"But it's a new era now and we're just looking forward to making our own brand and playing that brand of cricket.

"Last year is last year and we're here to try again.

"We're going to give our best effort, we have a few new faces so there's going to be a bit of new blood coming in.

"I know the boys are excited and I'm definitely excited and raring to go."

There is a article dated 13th Jan that WI have finalized their 11 for 1st Test but somehow I am not very sure what that 11 is- you got any idea @BouncerGuy ? Australia will be playing Green for Warner & I am happy that they will now have 2 more bowling options besides the 4 set bowlers .

Australia and West Indies announce XIs ahead of first Test

Ahead of the first Test in Adelaide on Wednesday, both Australia and the West Indies have revealed their teams.

As Australia captain Pat Cummins confirmed the inclusion of Cameron Green, West Indies skipper Kraigg Brathwaite named three men to make their Test debuts.

Kavem Hodge and Justin Greaves have earned Test caps, as has Shamar Joseph, who impressed in their side's tour match against the Cricket Australia XI last week.

Steve Smith's wish to open the batting has been fufilled following the retirement of David Warner, meaning Green, who averages 65 in First Class at No.4, will bat in his preferred position.

Playing XIs

Australia:
Usman Khawaja, Steve Smith, Marnus Labuschagne, Cameron Green, Travis Head, Mitch Marsh, Alex Carey (wk), Mitchell Starc, Pat Cummins (c), Nathan Lyon, Josh Hazlewood

West Indies: Kraigg Brathwaite (c), Tagenarine Chanderpaul, Kirk McKenzie, Alick Athanaze, Kavem Hodge, Justin Greaves, Joshua Da Silva (wk), Gudakesh Motie, Alzarri Joseph, Shamar Joseph, Kemar Roach

The new-look side gives Australia an extra bowling option, meaning the likes of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Cummins himself could be managed, having all played significant roles in the Test series against Pakistan.

For the tourists, right-arm seamer Greaves of Barbados has a reputable First Class bowling record averaging 22.76, though will be leaned on more with the bat. Hodge, who averages a tick under 30 at First Class level, is entrusted to provide a similar role, albeit chipping in with his left-arm orthodox to compliment Gudakesh Motie.

There is an excitement surrounding Shamar Joseph (no relation to fellow team member Alzarri), who claimed two top-order wickets in their tour outing last week at Karen Rolton Oval.

The teams play two Tests as part of the 2023-2025 World Test Championship cycle, before three ODIs and three T20Is.

No poor weather & even if it is a traditional Adelaide good batting track on first 3 1/2 days , wonder how WI can draw this game given that they really do not fancy red ball cricket anymore temperamentally ...

Yeah, it will be hard for the windies to draw a test match let alone to win 1. This Australian team is in some form and their morale is up high in the sky.

Poor decision to include Cam Green.

Australia needs a proper opener . If Bancroft is too old, they should have invested in Renshaw.

That lineup is looking less reliable than it has in a very long time

Wow, so the west indies captain said they studied what Aamir Jamal bowled and liked what he did and would be employing those full length bowling.

Cummins spells Smith warning for West Indies

Pat Cummins stated that Steve Smith was as excited as he has ever seen in training ahead of the first Test against the West Indies.

Steve Smith is set to begin a new innings in his Test career as he steps out to open the batting for the very first time in the first Test of the ICC World Test Championship series against West Indies starting on Thursday.

Having expressed his desire to take up the role, vacated by David Warner's retirement, Smith appeared reinvigorated in the net session according to Cummins.

"It's a new challenge for him which I don’t think you can underestimate," Cummins said ahead of the first Test.

Smith keen to embrace new challenge

"It's as happy and as energetic as I've seen him around the nets in the last couple of days," the skipper added. 'He can't wait to get out there.

"I also think the new ball, there may be a few more scoring options and that's something that excites him."

Cummins, who was initially hesitant about Smith moving from his No.4 spot in the Test line-up is now more convinced about the unexpected move and stated that the veteran batter would "thrive anywhere he bats".

Steve Smith reflects on Australia's WTC23 Final triumph
"Top of the order, the ball's a little bit harder and does ping off the bat a bit differently and potentially field placements might be a bit different.

"He thrives on that, he loves the problem-solving aspect of trying something new so it's all set up for him.

"It might not happen for him this week or next week, but I think knowing him he's going to do pretty well there."

Smith had earlier in the week said during a Big Bash League game that he took up the role because was "not a good waiter" and since Marnus Labuschagne's introduction at No.3, he's had to wait a lot of time to bat from No.4.

Toss Update: Australia won the toss and opted to field first

Australia:
1 Usman Khawaja, 2 Steven Smith, 3 Marnus Labuschagne, 4 Cameron Green, 5 Travis Head, 6 Mitchell Marsh 7 Alex Carey (wk), 8 Mitchell Starc, 9 Pat Cummins (capt), 10 Nathan Lyon, 11 Josh Hazlewood

West Indies: 1 Kraigg Brathwaite, 2 Tagenarine Chanderpaul, 3 Kirk McKenzie, 4 Alick Athanaze, 5 Kavem Hodge, 6 Justin Greaves, 7 Joshua Da Silva (wk), 8 Alzarri Joseph, 9 Kemar Roach, 10 Gudakesh Motie, 11 Shamar Joseph

All over on the 3rd day, maybe even the second I reckon. Wouldn't be surprised even if they were bundled out within the first session

Apparently it's the first time Australia have chosen to bowl first in Adelaide in 42 years.

seen off 7 overs , wonder if Cummins regretting bowling on winning the toss

just 1 in down in first hour after being put in to bat is pretty good imo !

Tough start for West Indies they are 31/2.

They need to get something around 250 to challenge this Australian side.

28 overs bowled and Aus have used 6 bowlers already haha
But WI are holding up better than I thought they would.

79/3 - still not convinced why Cummins decided to bowl . McKenzie batting well

such a good deck , why bowl , that too in Adelaide ... wonder if WI can do 250

Pat cummins and hazlewood have wrecked havoc on windies as the score for windies is 155/9 in session 2 of day 1. Things are not looking good at all for them.

Shamar joseph and roach have built a good partnership here for the 10th wicket. 44 runs of 64 balls. Making it hard for the aussie bowlers till tea.

Windies are all-out for 188.

WI - 188/10 (62.1 overs).

Good opportunity for Australia to get a big innings win.

25 overs left in the day - if Aus bat till eod 2 - could well be ahead over 200 runs

Lyon has his 1st wicekt of match as West Indies are all out for 188. good fight at the number 10 spot.

Matthew Renshaw will be released from the Australian men’s squad to play for the Brisbane Heat against the Sydney Sixers in the BBL13 qualifier on Friday.

Renshaw will join the Heat tomorrow evening before returning to Adelaide on Saturday for day four.
